When you check your IP, is the DHCP assigning an IP?

#

You probably shouldn't assign it manually unless you know how it works properly

#

These are just my guesses ^

ivory bear
#

Damn

errant hull
#

But probably has something to do with your DHCP

ivory bear
#

Let me take a schreenshot for you

errant hull
#

So dhcp is a protocol that's supposed to assign ip addresses automatically to your network

ivory bear
#

yes but I have to modify the ip for the robot

#

and then so that I can control my robot through programs

#

I think I can help you with that

#

If I'm not wrong in english it's called low-pass filter

#

I'll try my best to explain it to you since I do my studias in French

#

yes it only let the frenquences that are lower than the cutoff frequency to pass

#

No I understand perfectly what you mean

#

w is 2pif

#

f is the frequency

#

j is the complex

#

the impendance comes from the Ohm law to alternative current, it's value is in complex it that's why we have the j

#

And this is how you calculate each of the resitance, capacity and inductance

errant hull
#

Before you modify it, are you able to go on the internet with your vm?

ivory bear
errant hull
#

yep

#

the virtual machine

ivory bear
#

You're welcome, good luck 😄

ivory bear
errant hull
#

kk

#

thats good

#

Do you know what your IP range is for your network?

#

once you figure that out, try to see what range of ip hosts are available

#

and then go from there

ivory bear
#

24

#

I mean the netmask is 24

errant hull
#

your ip range of usable hosts would be:
192.168.43.1 - 192.168.43.254

#

so you can prob go from there and see which host is available (the first one is usually reserved for your default gateway)

crimson lichen
#

VMs usually do not have wifi, it is an virtual LAN (Local Area Network) where your host device is the gateway

#

It simulates an ethernet connections (cable)

#

Where is the supposed program to control the robot running?

#

Try to ping 192.168.43.1, then 8.8.8.8 and then google.com

crimson lichen
#

Feel free to DM me as I probably will miss the response 😄

ivory bear
#

I set the ip adress for the machine as 192.168.43.26

How can I add a value to a specific number in a dataframe in python. The thing is for school I have to make it so that when a number in the column is less than 800 i have to add 800 to that number to make it bigger than 800.

errant hull
vocal lantern
#

Mhm alr wait. So the thing i need to make. I have a dataframe with colums:start-time and end-time

And i need to calculate de difference between those comlumbs thats is easy and i know how. But sometimes the end-time is lower then the start-time(when it started befor midnight and ended after midnight). Then i have to add 24hours to the end-time and then calculate the diffrence. But I really dont know how to use a for loop for that cuz that was my first thought too

#

Heyy guys I'm gonna start with c programing today
Any pre requisites or a piece of advice before I start with it
Btw it's gonna be my first time learning coding

errant hull
#

actually nvm

#

I think you don't have to know it yet

#

but ngl, if its your first time coding, C is gonna be a tough language to start out with

charred kestrel
#

Is c even being used these days?

errant hull
#

C is for sure very relevant

#

I don't think it'll go away anytime soon

errant hull
#

But I'd say whats best is you should learn a language that'll be useful for what you want to do

charred kestrel
errant hull
#

a cs degree is very versatile

#

you could do a lot of jobs with it imo

errant hull
# charred kestrel Okayy I get it I'm doing computer science engineering and it's my first day at ...

charred kestrel
#

crimson lichen
#

Another great language that is getting used more and more in cloud native world is golang (between python and c)

#

I also use golang in cybersec related tooling, c++ if I need to evade stuff like AV

#

But my recommendation would be get good at 1 language first, if you understand the general programming terms switching between languages won’t be much of a problem but a strong fundamental on 1 language is mandatory

errant hull
# tepid nexus I'd like to learn how to do it by myself, but I don't mind getting help right no...

if you'd like to code it yourself:
Learn HTML and CSS. Here's some resources.
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTML

https://www.freecodecamp.org/news/html-crash-course/

You won't be building full blown amazing website but its a start.

Then learn JavaScript and how it can be implemented with HTML.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkZNo7MFNFg&t=145s

Taking it further:
You don't need to be a full blown HTML/CSS god but you'll need to be comfortable with JavaScript if you want it to look amazing (this is where frameworks come in).

#

Since its for a school project, it'll be perfect because you can show significant progress throughout the semester/term

#

And yes, also remember google is your friend for when you get stuck 😉

***Picking up a language and using it: ***
Pick up a programming language (most people start with Python since its very easy)
Before anything, learn how to code first and do some researching/googling about the language (what are it's use cases and why learn that language etc)

  • Learn the syntax and basics (Figure it out yourself on what to learn with google)

  • Have some projects in mind (start small) and try to develop that project overtime.
Doing coding exercises also help (you can find some online by just googling it).

You can use this website to learn a lanaguage. It already has a structure for people to learn. https://www.codecademy.com/catalog/language

Otherwise spend a good amount of time getting familiar and developing projects.

***Learning version control: ***
Version control is very important in programming because you may want to save how your code is currently or may want to revert back to the way your code was before it was broken, etc etc.

The most common version control tool people use is "Git".
You can learn it relatively fast on YouTube or via documentation.

https://git-scm.com/
Getting into GitHub
After learning Git, you can start using Github. Like stated earlier, Github is a great platform to store and collaborate on projects. Github is not hard to learn if you understand Git properly.

Going beyond
Depending on what you build/ what language you use you can start looking into frameworks.
For example if you want to develop a website with Python, you can look into Flask

This is my quick rundown to getting started 😉

Before you do this, with the battery and power cord unplugged, press and hold the power button for approximately 15 seconds, if still it won't shut down, use a screwdriver to open the battery socket and remove the battery and put it back in (it's easy and there are videos about it on YouTube)

a = zeros(m,n);
for i=1:m
for j=1:n
a(i,j)=input("Enter the element of matrix row-wise");

for i=1:m
for j=i+1:m
q=-a(j,i)/a(i,i);
for k=i:n
a(j,k)=a(j,k)+q*a(i,k);
end
end
end
for l=1:m
c=a(l,l);
for k=1:n
a(l,k)=a(l,k)/c
end
end

It looks like the code is building up a matrix of dimensions mxn as defined by the variables m, n, a (this variable is the matrix and it’s instantiated to the desired m x n size with values of all zeros).
The first set of for loops asks the user to input each value of the matrix along iterations of row and column. The second set of for loops overwrites the user input (since we’re adding values to the same matrix) by filling in matrix values according to some formula (look at variable q and the assignment of a(i,j) in the for loop

Context:

The task is to create the price calculation webpage of a fictitious company SufniGSM for used mobile phones. The price calculation will be done by an external API, which is able to provide a recommended price by the properties of the phone.
The API endpoint address is:

https://softcamp.hu/webler/arkalkulator.php

The price calculator expects the following GET parameters:

  • brand : free text field, manufacturer of the phone

  • model : free text field, exact type of phone

  • os : free text field, operating system. Possible values: ios only
    or android

  • releaseYear : number, date of release of the phone (must be less than 10 years old)

  • startScore :number, from 1 to 10, how good the phone was in your company's opinion at the time of release.(properties of the phone to provide a recommended price.)

  • startPrice : number, the opening price at launch (USD, in US dollars units of measure are not allowed, only number!)

  • condition: number - the current condition of the phone from 0 to 100, where 100 is almost unpacked (so it is in perfect condition) 0 means the phone is broken into pieces.

Some examples of the API:
iPhone 8 (2017), at release was a 10/10 phone with a starting price of $699, currently is is a 80% phone.

https://softcamp.hu/webler/arkalkulator.php?brand=iPhone&model=8&os=ios&releaseYear=2
017&startScore=10&startPrice=699&condition=80

Samsung Galaxy S20 (2020), was a 10/10 phone at launch with a starting price of $999, currently it is a 95% phone.

#

https://softcamp.hu/webler/arkalkulator.php?brand=Samsung&model=Galaxy S20&os=a
ndroid&releaseYear=2020&startScore=10&startPrice=999&condition=95

Huawei P40 (2020), was a 7/10 phone at launch, starting price $899, currently it is a 88% phone.

https://softcamp.hu/webler/arkalkulator.php?brand=Huawei&model=P40&os=android&releas
eYear=2020&startScore=7&startPrice=899&condition=88

In response we get back a JSON format data with 2 properties: error, data. If there is an error, it contains the error message, otherwise null. If there is no error, the data property is filled with the phone's data, like brand, os, model, releaseYear, but the important thing is
recommendedPrice and details.

The recommendedPrice is the recommended retail price considering its condition, and in the details the depreciation over the years has to be shown, with 100% condition.

We will work with this API.

The other API is the https://api.coinstats.app/public/v1/fiats api endpoint.

@ruby hinge you would use the std library and then "cout" like:

  std::cout << "23" << std::endl;

  std::cout << "78910" << std::endl;

Just in case if you still need other's opinion, obviously your project and default environment has linked to different python versions, you can change the paths or use venv. If you don't want to spend more time for this, you can simply uninstall all your python versions and re-install the one you want to have (but if your python within conda, it will be different case).

i am definitely not an expert in this but i have some minimal experience in coding

  1. coding basics include variables (stuff u store data in), if-else statements, while and for loops but most of them you can just learn online with any beginner tutorial guide on youtube

  2. i think you must first determine what you want to do with the skill. do you want to make a website? the best learning happens when you have a clear goal and project in mind. i suggest that you look for cool projects that you can copy and learn from. freecodecamp is a great place to start.

  3. i think python is a great language to start with. most peeps say that it is easy to learn because you dont have to memorize too much conventions.

  4. only if it supports/is essential to the job that you are applying for. i dont think all fields require or need coding experience. nevertheless having coding expoerience on your cv definitely shows that you have problem solving skills

  5. im not exactly sure with this, but keep making projects with deeper difficulty and i am sure you will grow

  6. freecodecamp, Harvard CS50, and i think your recommended will bring the rest hehe

  7. i think coding is possible for any laptop, just check the documentation when building stuff

Since Q4 is only question I think not anyone at study age can answers yet so i'll only focus on this one
Yeah, learning programming language will make your CV better, but your math and logic thinking, problem solving skill will be the best choice. I've seen alot ppl applied their cv with 2-5 years experienced at JS, Python, Java, etc or frameworks like React, Angular, Django, etc but very less ppl will apply their problem solving skill into their cv. You'll see your lecturer taught you how to convert OOP knowledge into assignments but when customers asking you to convert their problem into real OOP knowledge, you might have a very very bad nightmare during the project
So conclusion, Logic thinking and problem solving make you cv perfect than ever. Anything else beside technical skills, i won't tell you rn either you can learn it during exposure to the working environment

idle dew
#

Well then, it will be okay. I suggest you go to interview practice websites like leetcode and hackerrank, etc to improve both basic problem solving and coding skills
https://carlanderson.xyz/how-to-write-javascript-when-you-dont-know-where-to-begin/

Carl Anderson

Have you ever tried a coding problem, but ended up staring at a blank editor? Maybe you tried to write a simple function, but didn't even know where to begin?

It's frustrating.

After all, you've spent months working to understand JavaScript's basics. You've learned all there is to know about

Hello, I'm interested in responding to your text and I would say, python can help you with your work/job/main project as a medical biologist, if not soon, then later, this field will cross your area for sure. One day, your college will talk about it and somehow you two will have a good conversation. We learn the alphabet before words, so we have OOP before programming. It's just a light read with some notes, this is how you will spend your first hour 😊 I hope you have a productive day/evening.

I can STRONGLY recommend a Udemy course for learning python as an ABSOLUTE beginner. It is only an hour a day. You do not need ANY prior knowledge to take this course, and it only demands around 1 hour per day.

The instructor speaks super clear and gives tons of examples to make concepts easy to understand. There are small quizzes in between the "lectures" and lots of projects and hands on learning to help you.

https://www.udemy.com/share/103IHM3@18Bu6pz0yiuVOJyeJI_3McaXStNqhMhQYc79KomNM-hSgbsp9Sh8jFKWsTFLaGO-tA==/

Once you get through all of the beginner + intermediate lessons, everything else is optional in my opinion.

This is the best resource to learn how to CODE, but learning how to EFFICIENTLY code is a whole different path that you go down. I am talking about Data Structures and Algorithms. This can be tackled after you learn the language if you so choose 🙂

I am not being paid or gaining anything by recommending this course, just sharing resources that helped me a lot.

Can anyone help me? I am fetching data from an API and need a clever way of connecting data. I am looking up NFL teams from their matchups. I want to be able to fetch a team's name from one link to another.

(LINK A)
https://sports.core.api.espn.com/v2/sports/football/leagues/nfl/teams?limit=32
Under "items" are all links to each team. The issue is that these looked to be sorted in alphabetical order at first, but they are not.

(LINK B)
https://site.web.api.espn.com/apis/v2/scoreboard/header?sport=football&league=nfl
If you follow ["leagues"]["events"]["competitors"] you will see ["id"].

I assumed that this "id" would map to each team in alphabetical order (Arizona Cardinals: id = 0, Atlanta Falcons: id = 1) and so on but unfortunately it does not. Maybe someone can recognize a pattern on how they are organized?

For example, the Baltimore Ravens ID is 33, but there are 32 teams in the NFL so my index went out of range. The odd part is that it works for some matchups but that must be luck since they are not sorted correctly.

**Since it is not, how can I match the team matchups (link a) with their respective links in (link b)? **

Here is my code if that helps too: https://pastebin.com/g6sdFuz7

Also for if(y=="y") since your defining y as a char it has to be if(y=='y') or y is a string

also your formatting for printf is not correct

#

#

there are also stack based buffer overflows

#

infact i think most of them are based around the stack

obtuse coral
#

Every C program has 4 main components:
Heap, Stack, Registers, Instructions
Memory is allocated on the heap whenever functions such as malloc, calloc are called. As well as when global & static variables are declared.
Registers are small storage areas in your processor that store addresses & values (anything that can be represented with 8 bytes or less).
In the x86 architecture, there are 6 general purpose registers: eax, ebx, ecx, edx, esi, edi. Along with 3 reserved registers: ebp, esp, and eip.
The reserved registers are used to index the stack:
ebp (also known as the base pointer. contains the address of the base of the current stack frame)
esp (stack pointer), which contains the element of the current stack frame (top element of the stack frame)
eip (instruction pointer, always contains the address of the instruction that is currently being executed)
The Stack is a data structure comprised of elements, that is managed by operations. These operations include:
Push (Adds a stack to the top)
Pop (Removes a stack from the top)
Mov (Given two arguments, copies arg2 into the location referred to by the first arg)
add (adds the value of the two arguments, and stores the result in the first argument)
sub (Second arg is subtracted from the first)
lea (Load Effective Address) Syntax: Register, Address [Places the address specified by its second operand into the address specified by its first operand. This instruction is usually used for obtaining a pointer into a memory region.
cmp (Compare) This is actually equivalent to the sub instruction, except instead of storing the result into the first argument, it will set a flag in the processor.
jmp (Jump) Compare instructions are always followed by a jump instruction. Takes an instruction address as its argument, checks the state of the flag, and depending on the state, set the instruction pointer to its argument. There are many types of jmp instructions, here are a few:
je = Jump if equal to
jne = Jump if not equal to
jg = Jump if greater than
call (Calls a function, user-defined or a PLT function)
leave (Called at the end of every function, it essentially destroys the current stack frame by setting the stack pointer [esp] to the base pointer [ebp], and popping the base pointer off the top of the stack.)
return (Always follows a leave instruction, since the base pointer has already been popped off the stack, the return address of the function is now at the top of the stack. The return instruction will pop the return address off the top of the stack, and then set the instruction pointer [eip] to the top of the stack)

can anyone solve this? im trying to categorise the numbers into a traffic light system(red, yellow, green) and used a for loop and if statement and i just get this is an output

i want those numbers within the column (gen_asp['Work_for_emp_nosocial_impact']) to turn into red yellow and green as an output in my dataset

and when i ran the column again after my for loop code, its still numbers which means my code most likely didnt work 💀

bright pendant
#

@dusty tundra you are just printing not modifying the array or creating a new one, also if i == ['1', '2', '3', '4'] won't work, you need something like if i >= 1 and i <= 4

I would create a new list and append the labels to that instead, if you are doing something fancier you can use an encoder

see so basically the question is, user will give input in either 12 hrs or 24 hrs time format, it only 7:30 is given , means it is in hours, but if p.m. or a.m. is given then we will have to convert it to 24 hr format and then to decimal (like 7:30 p.m. shld be converted to 19.5 and if it lies in the time slots(either breakfast or lunch or dinner) then it shld give the output and if it is not in the time slot, then no output)

I have never done anything like this before (besides VERY simple c++ programs and even simpler html websites in highschool that i had to do but didnt necessary enjoy at the time) and i am clueless where to start

Just want to do it in my free time, will probably NOT practice more than 30 mins/day unless i really start liking it

Im a law student, midterms just ended for me, so im just looking to spice things up i guess

#

hello @elder swan... You can start with web dev its easy and fun but if you want to learn more about programming and all you should start learning C. Its going to give you a lot of basics like it did for me...but remember that its just my pov and i got it from my experience, so you should ask more people and look for what you want as a priority so you can aim the best programming language for you.

edgy blaze
shell spoke
#

ok, since I cant see what the actual input for the test case is, I shouldve asked you to do this earlier. add print() statements throughout execution and do a trace of your code. print the variables as well as their types. when you run the test they should show up and you can go from there

shell spoke
#
hours, minutes = (input("What time is it? ").split(':'))
minutes = minutes.split(' ')
hours = float(hours) + 12 if "p.m." in minutes[1] else float(hours)
convertedtime = hours+(float(minutes[0])/60)
out = "brekky" if (convertedtime >= 7 && convertedtime <= 8) else ("lunch" if  (convertedtime >= 12 && convertedtime <= 13) else ("Dinner" if (convertedtime >= 18 && convertedtime <= 19)))

a short way to write your code if you wnat to look at something, dont be like me and use ternary operators like this tho

you could just try change your convert function to this:
def convert(c, d):
return(float(c)+(float(d)/60))

abstract willow
#

i need help with a python project

shell spoke
#

you need to think about why the testing program would output an error from your convert function. ik nothing abt python but i have this assignment due @ 11:59 and i just need a file that uses some of these elements

cerulean patrol
#

yo anyone that knows C ?

shell spoke
#

pull up google and look up a python tutorial on each of these elements and write a script

#

if you write something and its not working and you post it here im happy to help

ok so

#

I am making a program that uses nested structs and I dynamically allocate memory for both through malloc but I don't know how to store values, I am kind of lost.

shell spoke
#

dont know how to do that either but post what you have so far maybe we can figure it out together

#

this looks useful

I am finished with pointers and dynamic mem. allo. and now I am moving on allocating mem for nested structs it works but I have no clue how to store values in the allocated memory.

#

tried a lot of stuff and even moved the for outside the function of mem allocation to make it easier still throws errors

shell spoke
#

It might help if you try just assigning for the non-nested struct first. Then when you can get those values stored try the syntax for nested

#

you can use this as a parallel to refer to

#

in this scenario I think there is too much going on and youre trying to debug in one file, if you use that small example in another file and just mess around with that and run it I think you'll esaily figure out what the problem is

cerulean patrol
#

thank you I guess, man C sucks sometimes...

#

I sucks that it has to be one of my main languages alongside rust

shell spoke
#

yeah I think graphics/games/space industry is the only places its used now. most of the fast movign tech side of things is all java and python, even though theyre legacy codebases

#

(90% of the time)

cerulean patrol
#

found the problem was my fault 100%

#

man I hate C

#

it's like you try to start an arguement and then the truth gets smacked in your face

#

the problem was the memory wasn't getting allocated btw

#

because I wasn't using call-by-reference

cerulean patrol
#

they use too much memory

#

and too many components for simple code

#

rust is starting to blow as well due to how good the compiler is.

#

I am looking forward finishing C and moving on because I am 100% sure one day C will die completely

shell spoke
#

development overhead for C is crazy though. I cant imagine developing any product in C other than games or highly optimised systems because you can whip up products in java and python so quickly and leave everything to dumballoc

This is quite specific but if anyone is dealing with code I'd like the assistance.

My problem comes with learning g coding in general, specifically OOP. How do you visualize the code your working with? When you are learning about, say, a MERN stack how would you go about remembering the different ways of coding them, what objects we are manipulating, the environment variables etc?

Tl;dr when you are looking at code you have to learn, what is the best way to visualize how it all connects and how to write it up again so it works properly?

Try making a diagram to show how the elements of the code are related to each other, such as how the processes of each function affect the code. You can try this on a piece of paper to make diagrams or in Canva, in Diagrams.net, Excalidraw or TLDraw.

In addition, try writing down comments to explain what each part of the code does. This will help you remember what they do, making it easier to modify the code when needed.
