Well I can go on with my own personal experience and opinions. In regards to not taking things too personally, I have a chill personality, but I still take jokes seriously because I find it hard to identify sometimes. Like idk when someone is joking or not. But I prefer to take things seriously, but it doesnโt offend me. Unless someone blatantly decides to offend me directly or indirectly. But Iโm not sure what triggers you to take things too personally
Yeah I have ADHD too, but I am taking a break for 1 year, but I still want to study at my own pace and enjoy studying. Like reading 4 different books on a subject and compile the information into my own notes. But yes, that helps with accomplishing tasks in a timely manner
But what I did try doing once was just have a clock displayed on my phone or iPad. Which helps me become aware of the passage of time

Guys sometimes it feels like there's nothing going on in life other than studying and it all feels kinda empty
And studying really just doesn't make much sense

I wanna be doing something big that has a significant positive impact on the world

@oak cedar Well, the school system is designed to make you learn things and even if it's not that great, you can still take responsibility to learn what you can at your own pace so that you can be a better person and so that you can act more effectively in the world
@oak cedar and well, even if this stuff doesn't make much sense to you rn. The reason to do it is that you just have to do it because there's no escaping it and also because you can't let your parents' money and efforts go to waste and you can't afford to disappoint them in this regard.
So you just have to deal with it.

I'm trynna do this so I can be better as a person and then be better for the people around me.
the timer is more of a friendly warning than a religious order. I find that given + or minus 5 minutes, I can always reach a good stop using a 90 minute timer. You can then use the formula of 1/3-1/4 of your study time as break time to adjust properly. For example, say u needed 105m to study, and it takes you 1/3 time to recover, then you get a 35m break

I find it almost impossible to study in my bedroom.
studying where you sleep and relax can be hard. when i need a change, i study at the kitchen/dining table or at the library @warped solstice
when my husband isn't working from home i go to his office. i don't usually go to a cafe because i don't always feel like paying to exist
if you can't go to somewhere that isn't your room a trick i like is to make a separate user on your computer that's only for studying and don't download any unnecessary apps or login to any social sites when logged into the studying only user
That's actually so smart
when you set yourself up with a blank slate, you're setting yourself up for success. there is less of an issue of willpower since those apps and games aren't downloaded and you're not logged in to social media sites and don't have your password manager set up to do it easily. you shouldn't rely on willpower so instead just lock yourself out so you don't have to make a bunch of hard decisions, just one - log into the studying only user. over time the decision to login to the study user will become easier. discipline/routine > willpower/motivation
this advice is also applicable if you're a streamer/youtuber. everyone ends up doxxing themselves because they use their personal user to make their content. eliminate the chance of doxxing yourself this way by making a separate user or use a separate computer entirely
other methods to get into study mode if you cant leave is to have a "study outfit" or "study mug" or light your "study candle scent" or put on your "study headband" or anything that is different that is only for studying to condition yourself. the key is to not use these items when not studying so you essentially Pavlov's Dogs yourself into studying

just wanted some help how to cope. ive recently been going to the hospital quite frequently for the last 2 months bc ive been having lower body weakness, shortness of breath, fatigue, and headaches. the headaches started last march, and all the others started around sept. we thought i had an infarct (stroke) in my brain so i took meds for it, then we found out the infarct is so small that its almost benign. i took a nerve test last week to see if its GBS, and my test was normal. now im scheduled for an mri next week to scan my entire spine. if the scan comes out normal too, my neuro suggests we look into rare diseases next. its funny too bc my older sister joked that im the most physically active out of all my siblings and im the one in a wheelchair now. i try to be positive abt all the medical stuff happening to me bc i dont think wallowing in my sadness is gonna help either, but its been getting difficult to manage lately. need some tips pls

honestly, two general tips I can give for anyone facing any serious stuff is praying (even if you are not religious tbh) and meditating on Stoicism
this year right now has been downright the worst of my life
and after a few months of continuous suffering in several areas, I realized that the key is basically to have patience, work on what you can, don't worry about whatever's out of your control and do those two things I mentioned

hey if youre able to, i suggest getting professional mental health if your depression has been bothering you so much. but if you cant, just remember you dont have to be 100% all the time or even 50% or lower. have compassion for yourself since you know yourself best. know what your limits are and take breaks around when you dont feel the greatest. youll be ok

Hi guys, Im a uni stu. I tried to quit social media since I first used it(in the 10th grade). I tried too much so that everyone in my friendzone is familiar with the 'disappearance' and 'appearance' of myself on it.
The problem with me is: First, Im a Asian people, so in my society, people tends to care about others more. So if I dont use it, so I dont think I have any stories to talk with them. So should I risk becoming an almost anti-social person to actually quitting it.
Second, I was taught to behave well with everyone. So if anyone using social media and they want to talk with me, can I just skip them or show my feeling with that ?
It always feels like it isn't but then they go and destroy churches in my city so idk I guess it is
I think people wouldn't be so violent like that without actually believing the idea behind said violence to some degree
My behaviour on social media is usually to stick around for a while and then disappear for months on end. My friends are already used to it, so they don't mind. Once I spent 2 years without talking to my best friend after we finished HS, and when we went back to talking to each other it was as if nothing ever happened.
That being said, I do have social circles tho, like my neighbours, church, especially after mass, and gym.
I wouldnt say you will become antisocial, but then again, you need to have some social activities besides the internet
Second, its nice to be respectful and polite to people, but if people want to reach you out on social media and you happen to be off, its their problem, not yours. You wouldn't spend the entire day by your doorstep because a neighbour might want to ask you something, would you?
And about having stories to tell when you meet your friends again...

heyy i think before starting a session you should just try out meditating for like 10minutes. While meditating just focus on your breathing pattern as you do this you will surely be able to be focused for a longer time.While meditating you also "intend" the next 1hour of your day . Basically just think of everything in detail you are gonna/want to do in next hour. After meditating i think so binaural beats might feel good listening to. Or you can always go with uke tune yk.I hope i may have helped you a bit.

For the last 4 years i wanst able to maintain studying habits,gym training or even deditace myself to get better at my hobbies. That happens mainly because Im stuck in this feeling of being mentally drained and exhausted. Even though its not like i have tough job or something like that.So i just feels like Im actually just lazy so i keep feeling guilty for feeling that way and being enable to get over this destructive circle even though 3 years ago this thing made me reach the rock bottom in life and now my life opportunity is on the line if i keep dealing with life this way.
At Times i did manage to get to the work.Progges in my studies and get my life to getter one piece at time. But the momentum only lasted a few weeks .it was a question of time until i fell back to old bad habits and a stagnating procastination process.
Feeling stuck really brings a overhelming feeling of shame. I know what exactly what i should do. But i keep failing to fulfill the promises that i made to myself
For me it was anxiety, I needed to focus on me and mental health a lot. I understood that Im just a human and I can fail, but if I have a goal, I need to start doing it, because I deserve it. I was starting to focus more on the process too, taking my time, like... Ok, I cant draw everyday, then I will draw 3 times a week for a time, and then bussines days and then everyday

Its been a long ass time since i last open up about my worries
I worried that if i go to a psychologist he may actually diagnose me in something and that diagnosys someway end up working as a shield to me avoid my responsabilities when things go south. I know this sounds Toxic as fuck but the "stop being a whining b**** and get the job done " mentality is what worked for me when i managed to get things straight in my life.
The psychologist need to work with that as well. I have diagnose so many things, but that is just to know how to work with it
No hard and fast rule, just practice and practice,practice to bring your focus back, whenever it drifts away bring it back, the more you practice, more you will be good at it and try to be efficient in these sessions, efficiency is the thing that matters the most.
You can really use that as a excuse, because you know now what is going on, if u dont work with that, then is a problem, because you dont have excuse, you know what is going on
if somebody dont know they have anxiety then it will be difficult to control it, because they dont know, but when you know, you can control it because you knoooooow

lot to do, couldn't do it, feeling drained, feeling guilty cuz my life was so easy and I couldnt just sit my ass on a chair and study
brought it up to my confessor once and he, a psychologist, told me that that seemed a lot like anxiety
ever since then I have been taking more care to control my thoughts, keep my mind sane, praying more, and it actually helps
you won't be able to do anything if you are always thinking about something unrelated to the task at hand, especially if you hold no control over it

now i just use a chatting and calling app named Zalo (similar to messenger) but you need to have their phone number in order to contact with someone
so that reduces a lot of distractions for me
i use Blocksite, because even greyed-out minimal youtube can draw you in
i did a complicated password saved on a notepad offline and blocked all of those dopamine-fest websites such as youtube and reddit. it helps a bit

I just use instagram and twitter just for share my drawings, I dont use tiktok, and I use YT for studying or information. My problem now is videogames, but I usually can control this things, because I concentrate more in having habits, doing things and getting bored instead of just thinking about dont using media so is easier for me to dont using the apps
Well, i already got some strategies that helped me to get out of procastination and paralising self loathing cycles. The big problem is that i cant keep those strategies consistent to finally never get back at those bad habits.

And everyone around always see me as a 'perfect model' and a bright people
but it turned really bad since I first used it in grade 10
i spend a ton amount of time exploring the internet
im a naturally curious person, so i tried everything, absorb everything in there
that made me having a terrible highschool time, bad relationship with my fam, bad sleeptime, suffering from overthinking everyday and wanna suicide a lot of time
im trying to get out of it since the first day using it
but my young me just didnt have enough brave and knowledge to really know how
its tough to be the only guy who refuse to use it

one thing that really helped me was just shutting it out completely from my life
for a few months
and when i did feel like, was ready to go back, and not waste my time on it, thats when i did
now also i use only insta apart from dc(to join study vcs) and whatsapp to stay in touch w/ my school and fam
that too i just use insta for dm and posting (im into photo editing)
the break made me realise that the explore page/reels section
is a complete waste of time for me
im not a content creator, this time in life is important for my studying and imo theres no need to watch reels/like posts to stay up to date w/ trends and all

Then I started to search validation from other, I sexualized myself online, irl, so I could boost my confident in a artificial way but I started to feel guilty, my anxiety was horrible and I started drinking, and at that time I was trying to lose weight because my dancemates were more thin than me, so I used all my money in alcohol and drugs so I couldnt eat. I met people who made to me bad things, I did bad things too...

itโs about the environment you work in, if you set up an environment that lets you get distracted then itโs much to get distracted. try leaving your phone in the other room or in somewhere inconvenient enough that you canโt reach easily and try to eliminate the common time wasters
try and block your time so you have a couple hours set out of no phone usage and then the rest of the day you can allow yourself back on

heya. kind of a "how do I get out of this rut" question, sorry for the length.......
i'm a postdoc with a full-time job (45h/week) and additional writing work in my free time (10-20h/week) since a few years. I've been fighting procrastination, which worsened over the years, since 2020: blocked all the social/websites/apps, journaled and assessed my working time, reconnected with my fears, worked on feeling my emotions, did little intermediate chapter-finished-rewards, etc..
After a year filled to choking with work (50-75 hours/week), and now several setbacks/rejections since July, i'm really worn down, but only like 75% to the goal. I have 5 open projects I need to finish, which all require so much to get finished and are all so anxiety-inducing (what if they get rejected?! what if there's a problem? etc)...
how do I actually get the motivation to finish these? I know of the 2-min technique, of 25min pomodoro, 5-4-3-2-1, putting yourself deadlines, but if you really don't want to do it in your gut, it all doesn't help. but all the years of work would be lost if I don't do these 25% ... one year more. Anyone got an idea?
So, sometimes the basics is all you need, when I dont feel like doing it I go really honest with me, like: TF ARE YOU THINKING? IF YOU DONT TRY YOU WILL NEVER KNOW, SO GET TF UP AND JUST DO IT! because when you finish, you will feel much better

I'd say you are on a good path and some projects just need more time than expected. If you pressure yourself so much that you don't even enjoy it, you're going to postpone it undefinietly until you have an actual break where you can rest and do nothing. Pushing yourself is good, but you're flirting with/ if not already in/ burnout. So schedule some time to rest, and only if you have an idea, write that down and go with the flow. Going on walks with no intention of working can help out tremedously with processing information and connecting things out for a new perspective ^^

Okay, I want to have some advices about my problem btw
The thing is, my life is turning excellently. I quit social media, building good habits, improving my concentration (1hr rn depending on the learning materials), but the problem is Im in a relationship rn, and I dont really have any experience with it yet (my first gf btw).
So, for me, love is empathy, understanding and spending worthy time for each others. We can honestly tell every parts of our life to the opposite and can listen to other heartly.
But for my gf, from my perspective, i think she is currently spending a lot of time trying to call me, like sometimes she just calls me a lot (2-4 hrs calling a day). Im okay with that, because I think it's norm if she misses me and want to talk to me, and I too. But through almost the time during our vid call, she seems to be busy, talking with friends, doing stuffs, and dont really pay attention to the talk.
Yup, so that bothers me. I tried to talk to her, but she said that she missed me and want my existence. I also talked to her my opinion and my schedule, always announce her what Im doing and why I hate wasting time on nothing.
So I wonder if I just "dont love her enough", love her less than she loves me, or she is just childish and stuffs.

Thomas, I think your gf might be in a similar situation that I had been as a student with my LDR. I was egoistical by not realizing my impact on other people, even though I wanted to be nice and welcoming and the best person ever, I never reflected much, and never dug into my feelings or what I wanted from people. For example I wanted to voicechat while I was cooking, and my bf talked to me, but when I once called my parents they were like WTF this cooking noise is so loud we can't stand it and you're not focused on what we talk.
But one of the most valuable things in life is someone who really listens to you, really focusses on you, and thinks about the things you say - when you want to talk, and not when they want to listen to you. Don't squander your valuable resource, time, and energy, because she might not be aware how much the 2-4 hour inane chatter costs you. And this might cause resentfulness over a long time
Alternatives: So maybe, tell your gf that you can be there for her, for example as video in one of jvs' rooms, so she can watch you studying, when she needs a bit of accompaniement. Or you jog/game/clean and talk inanely with her doing the same things, not properly listening.

The core issue with biology is that it functions on grants and you will very rarely find a job that is time unlimited (what's that called in english?). it's like applying to find a new job every 3-7 years. this is OK in the first 10 years after uni, but when you're 45, have kids, and really want to just buy an appartment or a car or have some financial stability there is very little leeway regarding possible avenues for your career. a lot of my colleagues became salespersons for pharma industry or similar because they couldn't stand the constant strain of grants/jobs/papers/rejections.
Biology in the lab is also a lot like gardening or cooking. if you like either, enjoyment is certain. But between constant repetitive workloads and frequently frustrating results, you need to have a good idea of why you want to do this work to keep a level head. as a postdoc in this sector, you will ALWAYS be the one in charge, responsible for everything, and some experiments are merciless in their time schedule. Consider well which times you want to go to work to replace your colleagues or students. Because people get sick, people need to do xyz in the weekends, and if you're a nice person or someone who can't deal with conflicts, you will find yourself frequently upholding your work like Atlas the world globe.
Medicine is a shitload of responsibility which will creep and creep and creep up on you over the years. At the start it's a lot of rote memorization. if you're really, really bad at memory, I would actually not recommend to do any "talkative" medicine such as internal medicine, neurology, pathology... consider your 3D talent when you consider surgery. and lastly, remember that some docs work in really weird, body stressing positions (dentist; ophtha, ortho,..)
However, with medicine, you will have the possibility of a very long contract and job stability. Both job groups after about 10 years experience make up for a salary of 100k in Europe. Which is middle-upper class, like, a house or larger flat is really fucking expensive and you'd never be able to save for one, but you can have a medium car, one kid, decent food, and two holidays per year for that money

Finding and suriviving a phd, the supervisor is key, and the lab boss. Those persons can make or break your entire existence. I spent 3 years hacking through the underbrush of the jungle, trying to drink the ocean, coping with having absolutely no help aside of accept/reject feedback at the end, and still prevailing. but it's not really a case of what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, because with a team which you love, colleagues which are not your direct intimate competition, and a boss that you can ask stupid small questions at and get actual usable answers from, will make you bloom with papers and happiness. publishing is the lifeblood in both med and bio lab stuff, so if you find a group with people who help you with statistics, who tell you which authors and papers are relevant, what is important ... you will skyrocket much more easily than when you have a dire, but well-payed job.
it's also a question of your own character. I think I was intimidated by people easily, which made me have this experience. in the work, usually, somehow, you get life lessons thrown at you which should be adressed by soul-searching and correcting yourself and your self-confidence and self-love etc, and if you don't learn the lessons, work will hit you again and again with these lessons relentlessly until you understand them xD
in central europe, university and phd's are free... some even have phd programs to accomodate people who work. in this case, it is absolutely worth it, because it'll raise your "worth" to the job and give you another argument for yourself. if you need to pay it yourself, you will need to consider very hard if it's worth the investment.
with kids/family, you will feel immense amounts of regret, I guess. I felt regret that I couldn't be with my parents, so I can't fathom what you feel if you have a spouse/kids.
one last consideration - if you're a chronic, severe procrastinator, an academic work surrounding WILL extend the SAME work surrounding that you had as a student. If you do consider to go towards an academic route with lots of work in your free time, procrastination WILL eat your entire life - if you do not smash it into oblivion with clear structures, deadlines, and extremely clear work/life borders. it's absolutely possible and very rewarding, but procrastination is insiduous and will strip you of any enjoyment for years if you don't act decisively.

But, to go back to your question. did you try switching that one addiction with another? such as stopping in your tracks when you go to this site, and then rather watch youtube shorts or something similarly activating? I think you compound the procrastination first with "dopamine"-"dense"-stuff, and then secondly you compound that "dopamine"-dense stuff with your bodily hormones that are extremely intense || when considering sex || as that's one of the base essences of our lizard brain
i've switched out youtube and reddit for reading fantasy books. less impact on my life, same amount of hours wasted. but after a reading some airport literature for 5 hours you feel less disgusting than after watching youtube or your similar stuff for 5 hours. So if you take a first step, could you eliminate that factor in your issue? or at least do some "intermittent fasting" and only start after 16:00 ?

depends on the subject but for ap economics (currently in micro), i like to take my notes and make myself my own test- definitions first, then like a comparison thing for different topics and then the graphs and equations.
but i'd imagine there are times when the professor/teacher didn't cover that question at all but it's there on the test.
Yo just wanted to say after watching the most recent video I was reminded of why I wanted to purse digital minimalism but I just have not figured out how to do it consistently, I'd love to hear anyone else's experience and recommendations with trying to manage their time well consistently.
I feel you. I dabbled in it during my last year of high school but kind of forgot about it after the year ended. Now that I'm in college though it's kind of become more necessary in order to manage my time
At least for me it's definitely something u have to ease into otherwise it's just like going cold turkey and you're not gonna last. if you have specific tasks to accomplish or hobbies you'd like to partake in in place of when you'd normally just turn to your phone or smthn it definitely helps than just saying "I will not use my phone/devices for X amount of time"

digital minimalism and time management are two different things. DM will allow you to have more time in your hands and less distractions, but how you use that time is a whole beast of its own to be solved.
if you pursue digital minimalism to become more productive, you need to develop digital minimalism AND time management side-by-side

Going minimalist means you'll lose a lot of things that you might need , cloud storage , online lectures , apps such as obsidian or notion or whatever u use , some educational institutes may or may not send updates/messages in an app that is not supported by your phone
You'll lose contact with what's happening in the world , even if it doesn't matter , staying up to date helps sometimes
