listings are... usually not written by devs, do keep that in mind. But yeah familiarity with one usually helps with the other. The reason people focus on C is mostly because you won't use all the CPP functionalities like smart pointers or heap memory in general, because those are considered bad practises in embedded and make your program binaries too large and too at risk of breaking from a memory leak

if you're writing C you can pretty much always expect to never use keywords like new or delete or sizeof for getting big items, pretty much everything will be defined at compile time

That depends on if you want to prioritise getting an education or not, personally I would suggest doing so as the qualifications are valuable for your longer term future.

So yes and no. It's true that James self studied a lot, but he also completed formal education, which is what he was studying for. As I understand it by the american school system, James went the route of High School until he was 18, then College (what we call university) for Computer Engineering on a 4 year degree (which would typically be 3 years in the UK).

My understanding is that educational institutions (like college) in the UK have a legal requirement to provide support for their students, yes.
On the second part of what you've said here, I'm not sure I understand completely what you're saying about your time doing an IT college course. Are you saying you've partially completed one but then you left? OR that you've stopped going full-time and now study part-time?
As for self-education, I can point you in the direction of specific reading materials you can look at as far as textbooks and youtube lecture series online if that would help, but I'd need you to give me an idea of topics you're interested in.

I struggled a lot between the ages of 17-23 with my mental health, and it wasn't until around that age that I went back to college to finish my IT course, and then applied to university after that. It is not too late for you at all, students go to university and college at all kinds of ages.

5 - that's cool, memory can be hard to get right. Maybe you can tell me about what kinds of things you struggle to remember? Is it longer term things, think like if you learned something in a science class in school, would you be able to remember it maybe a year later? Or is it more like, you are working on one thing on Monday, but then when you revisit it on Thursday you've completely forgotten what you were doing, do you remember on thursday a little while after you get started? Or is it more from the perspective of scheduling things, like you forget you were supposed to be somewhere for an appointment to meet someone?

For me i had been planning to study long hours to meet various goals. I had concluded, based on a lot of different evidence, that hours spent training was a major variable for mastering different skills. I had various things I wanted to master, however I found that I had a lot of trouble following my planned study routine. Especially if it was self-learning and not connected to a class. Thats why I started searching around about how to do it and was driven to this community.

I can say it helped hugely. Although in this new university im at the pace is insane, and all this training i did to self-study here is super helpful now. Its funny how im probably learning stuff 4x faster than i thought i could though.

Ah a lot of stuff. I started reading some books about learning like Atomic Habits and A Mind for Numbers that had some great ideas i could put into use. Started using a timer on my phone to help me know when it was time to get back to studying. Started to focus on getting started rather than on the thing I had to do. Pushed my study endurance by increasing my study time by 20% each time I studied. Stopped trying to study in my room and started studying out. Started to take some breaks and walk around during my studying.

Well lately my gf just tells me 'stop thinking about what you need to do and just do it', which also helps 😂. If you know what you need to do, stop thinking and start acting.

Bit of a misnomer, CS was always a highly mathematical field with a lot of theory, it's just become very trending RE: software dev jobs because it's a good career, but i think for 80% of my undergrad I was doing maths modules

Personally i get all my studying done in the morning so i know if i get hit with a side quest in the day i already won the day so you always end up making progress even on the worst days

Also not only studying but any work you have is the same, i am in a bad position currently in terms of studying so i dont have a lot of expectations of me achieving this but i have thought bout it and wanting to be my daily routine but i havent had any sucess in the consistency aspect 🙁

Sure, you know the chapters where he is like 'you should link things you want to do to pleasant sensory experience?' I think this gets away from the earlier message about doing things because you are trying to take up an identity and doing things because you are locked in the habit of them.

I know its not totally contradictory, but I feel the whole pay kids for A's, or give it out cookies to get people to show up to some event, get people too focused on that 'reward' rather than the activity.

Like i feel that sort of thing should be like a last resort if you really can't get into a habit using stuff from the earlier part of the book.

Yeah I definitely agree with you, and even the reward system doesn’t always successfully work in my experience. It seems a bit weak to me, but I get where the author comes from. The message of doing things because they are easy/frictionless and because they are a part of your identity is much stronger. As you said, the reward thing is not effective or efficient long-term, but in “emergency” situations like when you’re in a different environment and there is more friction involved in the habit you try to maintain, rewards can help a lot with that
