Im usually good at math, i get my low 90's to high 80's

but this yr i do not know what happened i got the worst marks ive ever gotten

and my math average rn is a 55%, i cried and im so scared

report cards r in 3 days

i asked my teacher abt it and she said that shes gonna talk w my parents and we can figure things out

and she also sent a page to them w all my test marks resulting in that average and it needs to be signed

idk what to do im in so much pressure that i have constantly been getting dizzy tday and also puked

the same thing happened to me. all through school i got straight A's in math, and then second semester of 10th grade I got a C. Then junior year hit and I failed precalculus completely. ive come to realize that this is actually a really common experience. just know that youre not alone in this and most of us are just trying to mentally hold on.

I actually had to end up homeschooling for my junior year and even then I still cant get my work done

Ive been trying to figure out why for a long time, but I think it just comes down to the fact that I have a bad work ethic and a cynical outlook on school. Ever since middle school ive seen school as pointless and authoritarian, where you did work in order to simply comply with "the system" or whatever. You go to school so you can go to college so you can get a job and then be miserable for the rest of your life. But thats not necessarily the case. You can work with the system thats in place to achieve the life that you want, which is way better than not having any options at all. Im still trying to figure things out, but going outside and journaling for hours on end helped me figure out a lot of stuff.

As a tenth grader, I’m taking 4 AP classes: government, chemistry, calculus AB, and computer science

For first quarter so far I have all As minus ap chem. I currently have an 85 avg in the class and it’s been weighing me down

I feel like I study the most for that class yet I see the test paper and I blank out causing me to receive 83-90s on the test

I study the material thoroughly from our textbook and complete all the tedious/strangely worded problems to practice, yet on the test, there’s always some problems that I’m not familiar with

It’s honestly been so frustrating and being one of the youngest in the class makes me feel like everyone else knows what they’re doing except for me. Even though one might look at a B and think it’s okay, for me it’s a failure that I’ve never had to experience before. Yeah just wanted to share my thoughts

At least that is what I Think.

Like I think atomic habits tells you how to build a routine so you can minimize willpower, deep work is about what habits you should build, and uhh can't hurt me is a book on willpower. Like you probably need all three mindsets from the books if you want to maximize whatever you wanna be good at.

Also one interesting thing I've noticed about willpower is that it tends to be like a thought process that lets you resist temptations for the long run. And generally in my experience how thoughts work is that the more you have them run through your head the more they are going to pop up in the future. So like willpower does get more effective the more you use it. But that's just my opinion with nothing to back this except for maybe a few anecdotes.

Eh, but the whole field of psychology is going though a replication crisis so maybe anything goes.

1.Check your basics : you know you want to get stuff done, so dedicate a space with no distractions allowed (throw that phone on airplane mode and under your bedsheets; don’t look up your emails every 10 minutes), preferably a tidy area so you don’t procrastinate on decluttering and cleaning instead of working (you can allocate a small amount of time to do that every week let say). If you have a big goal, a specific aim; make that visible (post-it notes, calendar, vision board etc…) so you can refer to it and be motivated by that every time you are in that space.

2. Know yourself: try to see how much time you can focus “naturally”, taking into account your physical and mental energy. I’ll advise you take that in notes as a log for some time, so you can see patterns like “oh, I’m always drained on Fridays because of x,y,z; so I may put the less difficult subjects/tasks for another day / another moment in the day”. Or such as the times when you are the most creative as well.

3. Create a structure: a schedule that you carefully craft and that you can follow in most cases (life happens so it might not happen 100% of the time), habit inducing rituals such as a light stretches before sitting down, washing your hands, lighting a candle etc… and acting on good rewards when you stick to that (scheduling time for social media or reading graphic novels for example can really work in your favour, if you are honest about not extending that time ^^). -> The book “Atomic Habits” that James recommends is a very good one that can help you out into habit building systems.

4. As you probably know, getting to study and focus for a long period of time is no easy task and you will need to practice and train yourself to go a little further, just like you would for a marathon. You don’t just dive in and study 6h straight or you may burn out and be turned off to even consider going back to study. Start where you are comfortable (30minute, 50 minutes …) and slowly increase the time if you feel you can do it.
