There are 3 new channels underneath this channel :
#book-club-calendar -> Stuff where I will post what's happening in the book and the schedule.
#845877644599361576 -> We can post books, links and also recommendations other would love to read and such.
#jimmys-book-club -> Any suggestions, improvements, preferences and changes you want to include in the book club.
@gleaming juniper
in #845877644599361576 can we recommend books as @gleaming juniper said (#book-recommendations message ) ? or just recommendations for books to read in the future in the book club?
You can put in any books you would like for others to read/recommend. Or currently reading books as they have mentioned.
okay thanks ✨
@gleaming juniper The blog is up and running. You can find it in #book-club-calendar
First of, thanks so much for the sites you uploaded on #845877644599361576 @knotty tide. I found a book I’ve been looking for for months
But I still can’t find the first volume of what I’m looking for. It’s called “The Art of Passing the Buck Vol I”. Can you help me find it pls?
I tried searching the book on several websites, but the book is not available anywhere. Unfortunately, buying it is the only option.
jimmu joy
Hi
hey.
Hey everyone, can I get recommendation on books about: tech, future, living simple and be decisive? much appreciated
Being decisive/living simple: Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. Also Atomic Habits by James Clear.
@brisk sphinx I know you asked for a book, but using a recommendation from my coach, I highly recommend trying to be as intentional every moment and practice making lots of decisions big and small. The key to good decision-making is to make lots of decisions. Like Gary Vaynerchuk once said, in terms of amount of good vs. bad decisions he wants to make, he wants it to be 355:345. Many many decisions but overall net positive. So think about basic things you decide moment to moment and practice making conscious decisions.
hello
what do you guys doing if you lose your interest in reading books? please help 😦
if I'm struggling to read: I like to listen to rain sounds, brew up a cup of tea, and sit in my favorite reading spot (maybe light a candle if you've got one or incense)... try to make your environment line up with what you're trying to accomplish... hope you find my advice somewhat useful! 😊
also pick books that you truly enjoy reading.. for me, I love fiction and biographies, so I'll find a book of that genre and work my way up to more difficult reads over time
thank you so much 😃 i'll try
The Shallows by Nicholas Carr is about those 3 things
Usually I try to find some better, really good books if I'm feeling that way. Also reframing the way you think of books, like 'I'm being given access to an extremely unlikely chain of thoughts coming together that would take me years to come up with by myself', or 'when I read I learn new things, which lets me reshape how I see the world around me'. Besides that just telling yourself 'I want to be a reader'.
A lot of times what makes me lose interest with reading is if I read a so-so or even a fairly bad book.
Guys, how can i love the reading? like, reading it's bored for me and i don't really like to, but i need to, cuz of the college the next year.
Read some fun stuff too. That way you start seeing reading as more fun.
Even if you gotta read some stuff you don't like, if you also read stuff you do like it'll be easier
Another thing you can do is write one good thing about reading onto a list everyday. Each time you see all the good things about it you wrote you might start to like it more.
What I did is literally just set the goal to read just ONE page a day. Preferably a book that you really like. You will usually read more than one page because it gets you hooked, and if you don't read more than one page, it's okay because that's the goal you set. This way I built a habit of reading :)
thank you so much (:
Hello everyone 😄
heyooo
SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESH
Has anyone ever read "Brave New World" By: Aldous Huxley
I'm starting it and I like conversing about a book after I have finished it with others who have read it
I've heard about that book being thought provoking but I haven't read it
One of the best books ever
Although, on the literary perspective 1984 takes the cake, but this is more frightening and real and more suited for the world we live in.
Maybe you're not reading what you are supposed to be reading.
what is the genre? It all depends on the love you have for the genre, I red quite good books in the past, "Crime and Punishment", "The Idiot", "To kill a Mockingbird", "The trial" are some of the few, I really loved existentialism and alienation and dystopian stuff, I don't need any driving force needed for it, so try to love the genre...maybe...
anyone here read The hundred year old man who climbed out of the window and disappeared? yes thats the name lol, and the story is hilarious
never read it but I'm intrigued now 😆
hihiii what is this channel for?
this channel is dedicated for a weekly book reading, you can find the schedule and book in the pinned messages 👍
ty
1984 was .. amazing but thank you !
Yeah 1984 is actually soo good. Glad we had to read it in high school
The only issue with this is it seems to imply that things that cause us pain or fear are generally more correct. It's an easy thing to assume, but in many cases it simply isn't true. I've noticed that was an unconscious bias I had for awhile, the more I feared something the more I gave it weight, but it led to many faulty assumptions/conclusions.
Not really, the books you're reading should break your belief system, a man with a broken belief system is a mad man, you'll run around your house trying to justify what's real and what's not, this is what some really great books does for you. I'm not a literary expert but if you read crime and punishment and the idiot, those two books are like the opposite of each other sorta like the link between two extremes, Extreme Atheism vs. Extreme Faith in christianity as an example. So either you're an Atheist or a Christian you'll get a good/new perspective, those two books aren't necessarily scary but they are unbelievably true. The truth is somewhat scary though.
This kind of feeling also happened when you read the alchemist, when you realize more of life is dependent on following what you love and if your belief system was said otherwise, you'll completely get disfigured and it gives you a 'blow on the head' as kafka said.
This isn't exactly right. It's more like the books you are reading should help give you new information, new perspectives, help you reevaluate the current information you already have, and inspire self-improvement (like your point about trying to think about and justify your evaluations and what you think you know). None of this implies any sort of pain or breaking, although perhaps those things may occur. There can be things you can read that can cause you pain or fear, and be total nonsense and untruth. In fact there are a vast amount of such things in the world, and it isn't a sign that what you are hearing is good.
Following what you love sounds like simply trusting my biologically programmed emotions. I'm not sure why thinking that would disfigure me.
The things which cause you pain or fear won't wake you up with a blow on the head. It pushes you down the rabbit hole even further.
But the books Kafka was saying are truths that frightens you but also builds you up.
Actually emotions are fairly dependent on our thoughts and our beliefs. You can think of them like evaluations, and such evaluations are dependent on known information and experience.
Tell that to someone who was present in an overly-repressive house-hold
If you believe something and I said "whatever you believe is not a true thing and truth is way deep", won't you get thrown back a bit?
I think that depends on how one evaluates new information, and how willing someone is to admit they may not be right.
I guess you're right there.
Some people have a deep thirst for new, novel information.
indeed.
Like, sometimes people believe in something all their life and suddenly they read something that says otherwise, they'll soon get anxious or have their flight or fight response thrown.
Not everyone has that, and not every books needs to do that for you.
But if you're the same person before picking up a book and after putting a book down, it's better you haven't picked up a book [might be flawed but this is what I understand from Kafka].
You can think about information as being what we know, which is necessarily finite, and what we don't know, which is infinite. People who claim their finite amount of known information is the most important information, that its 100% correct, and that nothing in the infinite unknown knowledge out there is more important or correct are in for a rude awakening. That being said I respect that with mathematics they at least try to prove that what they know is correct, so even if limitless unknown information is out there, they are standing on firm ground (at least more firm than everything else people know).
I agree with you.
Hmm this depends. I think its worse to pick up a book, and lose better ideas and beliefs and take up worse ones that are more incorrect, than it is to read it and remain unchanged.
But if the change is growth and improvement then ill agree
Maybe you should know what you are going read before start reading.
This is actually impossible to know
I mean, it's honestly not a good practice to get a conspiracy theory book and be woke...
although you can get some guesses or predictions sure
That's why people say never judge a book by its cover, or don't believe gossip. You can only really know once youve read it and interpreted it for yourself
not exactly, reading a book is like getting on a boat. And the research about the book is like checking whether it's necessary for you and to make a decision.
Blindly going into something is not rewarding. Our human brain works better if we know some little things about the book. Getting new information is pointless if you're not going to use it tomorrow or in the future.
Little things - Why this book? What does it convey? What good am I going to get by reading this book? What am i going to understand [or learn] from this?
Blindly going into something can be very rewarding. The reason its better to know some little things is to better predict whether its worth the effort to read or not. But regardless that prediction could still be totally false.
and I disagree that information has to be useful or practical to have a point to it
perhaps its uses or practicalness is just unknown to us first of all
I don't agree with you. Infact blindly going into something might make you mis-interpret the meaning completely.
You can't overfit information.
So you are saying in every single case blindly going into something is unrewarding?
And there can be cases where going in blind allows you to find the correct interpretation, whereas if you listen to other people talking about it it can make you focus on the incorrect context or meaning
Im not sure what you mean about overfitting
wait
Okay there are cases where it might be (heck I went into To Kill a Mockingbird thinking it was a light-hearted novel)
but the same can't be said for The Trial or Metamorphosis
You'll forget 90% of the information you read. Reading should not be an Escape from reality...
I'm not saying in it's entierty
Here's an example. In the early 1900s people thought the mathematics of number theory was purely just fun thought, and it's most useful application was as an art or for aesthetics. That same information is now the bedrock upon which computers and the internet operate, some of humanities most powerful tools.
ah, you're mis-interpreting
The usefulness/practicalness was simply unknown information at the time
You just should not read 10 novels in 10 days and be like I know everything.
You should read a novel and analyze and it and study more about it and understand the novel upto a certain extent as much as you can so that you feel that you actually learned something that might be useful in the future and then put it down.
gtg nice talking with you...
I bet you could find benefits to reading stuff that has no obvious usefulness. Just better language comprehension and practicing ones ability to focus and build good habits if nothing else
and having new perspectives, thoughts on morality, learning about psychology, etc
alright buddy nice talking with you
:))

@unborn oriole Hi, I saw the book you are reading, How is it? To me the title sounds really pretentious and kind of douché.
PS please ping me if you respond, I don't normally check this channel
Yes I agree it is good to know about all the factual stuff, but if you keep stuffing in facts and figures into your brain what’s the difference between you and a machine?
Anyone read excellent sheep? Is it worth a read
I don't think we need to place arbitrary limits on ourselves and our growth/improvements. Knowing more things, and understanding what we really don't know just makes us wiser, not a computer. It's like should I stop working out and gaining strength because I'm going to turn into a forklift? Should I stop running because one day there will be no difference between me and a car/bicycle? I don't think these fears are valid.
It's human nature to fear the unknown and new information, but its also our instinct to seek it.
Yes I agree with you on this point. We obviously have to know and understand everything. I meant that we also have to read fiction work too to gain a much deeper insight on our life and our feelings
I think there are quite a few benefits to reading fictional works as well, I agree
but as with anything that is beneficial, do it moderately
Yess that’s correct
That doesn't mean don't aim high, but make sure it balances well with the other good things in our lives
like don't sacrifice your workout session to read 30 more pages, etc
Definitely
Totally different from what we were talking about. I read this interesting point that all fear is a fear of the death of our physical self or our self that we psychologically made up in our mind
I think vsauce has a video on fear
I don't believe that statement though. I think fear is more of an evaluation, through our previous experiences, thoughts and beliefs, of what we are detecting with our senses, and also a motivator for action to change things.
But its also biologically programmed into us, like we are designed to interpret some basic senses as causing fear at the very least. Like if something caused us pain in the past, we may be scared of that thing, until we learn that certain conditions need to be met before it would actually cause us pain, etc. Since we aren't biologically programmed to understand death, but have to learn of it from our parents/environment, I don't think it can be the source of fear.
We are starting with the Chapter 09 of the book, The picture of Dorian Gray in a 2 minutes.
It is really nice! The title is pretty weird in my country and when somebody sees me reading it, they are like yoooo you have no friends or waht. But the book speaks more about manners, which is really nice, as it doesn't contain stupid deffinitions like a school text books. Each manner or habbit is depicted by a short (sometimes even funny) story of real succesful people.
@quartz harness
Hi! Is 'to kill a mocking bird' good? I might buy it.
Yes it is!!!
Wait... I didn't get the Dorian Gray ping?
Ah! I thought it was saturday and sunday. Nvm
No one volunteered to read it, so it is postponed to tomorrow. I had put a message in #jimmys-book-club
My personal experience tho it was a hard read. The vocab...
It is! I had it as my syllabus.
Can we suggest books for the book club?
Hi. Has anyone read the Catcher in the Rye?
Thank you for your answer. Sounds much more interesting then the title initially let on
Its a classic book, but tastes differ by reader.
it sure is!
I have!!
YES , I had to read it recently bc of Highschool and I enjoyed it
But like UaC said taste differs for everyone :)
Nevertheless, masterpieces are irrefutable
DId you like it?
I did but it was way American. As a non, it was mostly keeping pace with it and all the americanness in it. But nevertheless, it was great and I think all young adults (like us) should read it once
Hi anyone here read Stephen King?
i've only listened to the audio book for 'on writing'
Judging by your name I feel you'd be interested in this: https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/54351235
Haven't read it, but hearing nothing but great things so far.
Yes, but it wasn't my kinda book. Finished it just coz I couldnt leave it unread after 60%. Hope you like it better! 😸
Why is the picture of dorian gray so hard to read
I was planning to read that book, is it good? 🙂
Yess
The language is a bit tough but the prose is quite poetic
Oh I see, i will give it a try then!!
Did anyone complete reading Can't hurt me by David Goggins ?( one of the book from James' recommendation) Worth it?
I did. It's fairly good. Don't ignore his other suggestions tho. I found Atomic Habits and Deep Work to be better books
I think James recommends Can't Hurt Me coz there are some events in David's life which concur with events in James' own life
That said, read the book properly. Complete the challenges religiously.
I read Can’t Hurt Me in a difficult time in my life and was inspired by Goggin’s struggles to push the limits of what I thought was possible
I don’t remember using any of the challenges except the cookie jar technique which I highly recommend!
Yes, it was awesome!!
They’re brilliant. I finished them before joining this discord and they both have made a difference (only if you apply them though)
I didn't word that sentence right
Edited it now :))
No but I've been listening to Goggins talk in some youtube videos and I like a lot of what he's saying. I bet his book would be good, based on the messages he talks about.
Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love.
And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied
is to do what you believe is great work.
And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle.
As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship,
it just gets better and better as the years roll on.
So keep looking. Don't settle.
Guess the author:
🔴 Stephen King
🔵 Steve Jobs
🟣 Paulo Coelho
gotta be Stephen King but yeah
wild guess
Nice to meet a fellow amateur short story writer 👋 @gleaming juniper
I have a feeling you'll like the book club here
I will certainly be lurking in the shadows, ready for any and all good book suggestions 😛 Thank you.
Steve Jobs' speech at Stanford iirc
Hello everyone I want to learn c++ please guide me
that's book club bro
but i would recommend just learn basics, and start coding asap
go to #tech-related-help
Yeah that's right 😎
damn if this wasn't spot on with the timing... thanks
thanks
guys im searching for the pdf of Atomic Habits since a long time, if any of you have it can you share the file/link?
I recommend Plato's Republic and The Log from the Sea of Cortez by John Steinbeck
Many of the short stories by Jorge Louis Borges are also very good

books recommended by our james
and books which can keep on moving or for having transformation and good habits
what is this one about?
Guys has anyone read "a plan that actually works" i was looking for its pdf...
Eh. It's good for the audience that it targets (i.e. JEE Aspirants). For general life advice, it's really not that great.
I think the three books that James suggested are good enough.
The reason I say this is because those 3 books prepare you for life. These "How to crack JEE" books might prepare you to crack the exam, but they won't really prepare you for what's up ahead after your entrance exams.

This book entitled "the 5 languages of love, the secret of love that lasts" by Gary Chapman I read it to me because I am convinced that "if you are full of love you are invincible" I am obsessed with it, the more things you love, the more life you live and the more man (or woman) you become, the more you love what you do, the more productive you are and the more productive you are, the happier you are.
The book basically deals with 5 languages of love that people have, it has many important things to apply with respect to coexistence, here I expose what I consider applicable according to the language of love:
- Techniques applicable to the language of love: words of affirmation
Write on your mirror: words are important!
For a week make the record of your words of affirmation you will be surprised how well ... or badly you are doing it
Praise your loved one in the presence of other people, this usually has twice the positive impact
Thank your loved one for something routine, you will surprise him - Techniques applicable to the language of love: quality time
Define specific time and place for planned fellowship
Ask your loved one five activities that they would like to do with you, make plans to do one per month, if money is a problem intersperse with free activities
Send photos to your loved one to make them feel like they are with you
Think of an activity that your partner loves and you don't, set a date to join in giving your best effort
Plan a weekend without commitments, only rest, that is in the next six months
Take time to talk about the events of the day
- Techniques applicable to the language of love: acts of service
Ask your spouse for a list of 10 things they would like you to do next month, after I prioritized them by listing them from 1 to 10; prepare to live with a happy loved one
If you have more money than time, hire someone to help you with the acts of service (help with chores, clean your pet, clean at home, etc.)
Support your partner with her homework when she is busy or when she is busy with something - Techniques applicable to the language of love: physical touch
Hold your partner's hand as they walk
Hug your loved one, give him a massage, say nice things
When you pray or meditate with your partner take her by the hand
Get a foot massage prior to intimacy
When you are in a meeting with friends or family, hug your loved one - Techniques to stop hating your loved one
Ask how you can be a better partner to your loved one
When you receive positive feedback, each month make a simple request that corresponds to your primary love language to fill your empty tank.
When your partner responds to your requests, you can react with positive emotions
As you progress "don't rest on your laurels"
In german we say "Ehrenmann" (Man of honor)
Yes but I am preparing for jee...
Understandable. Wish ya luck!
I'm a NEET aspirant. I have completed reading Atomic Habits and Deep Work last month. Honestly speaking, my mindset kinda changed. I was able to develop the "drive" as James mentioned in his video. Worth the time. Good luck 👍
Yeahh i am gonna start atomic habits
Then maybe deep work... Does anyone has a pdf for it?
Yes I have. Back in 2020 when I gave my JEE.
Can't say it helped much tho :/
Is anyone here read manga? If so i would love to give a recommendation
sci-fi:
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang
biographies:
Highest Duty by Chesley Sullenberger
Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson
astronomy/science:
Death by Black Hole by Neil deGrasse Tyson
Cosmos by Carl Sagan(⭐)
other:
Quiet by Susan Cain
Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell
what i'd like to read:
The Code Breaker by Walter Isaacson
The Body: A Guide for Occupants by Bill Bryson
Oooh yes Malcom Gladwell is great, I also liked his Talking to Strangers novel
oh yeah, thats next on my list
This book has has a rough time but is the best book I've ever read. Recommend it a million times over. But some scenes are graphic and a bit horrible so if you're not into that I wouldn't read it
yes please 🧍♀️
Okay here you go ig, (btw this is my top tier so-
- Berserk
- Vagabond
- Chainsawman
- Tokyo revenge
Sorry it's just a bit tho cuz only a few manga's that actually gotten in my heart, also manga called attack on titan is really good aswell
oh oh, i’ve read all of these asides vagabond and berserk! nice taste in manga<33
Ahh you should read those two in my opinions, vagabond and berserk are my most favorite manga, they are really have a good story
What is it abt? I have read the war of art and turning pro by pressfield
anyone here loves the king killer chronicles as much as I do?
It's about a Greek slave following his master to the Battle of Thermopylae where he is captured by the Persians. The book is him then explaining how he got there and why the Spartans were so effective in battle to the King of Persia, who asks him questions
But if you've read the war of art and turning pro, I recommend "Do The Work" which is kind of the natural progression to those books
Ok Johnny. I will look into do the work
Would recommend No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai if you'd like a raw and beautifully written semi-autobiography (a lot of trigger warnings beforehand tho and not for the weak-minded cause it's vry dark and tragic) But it's still a rly good read imo
So I also want to recommend one of the best book I have ever read! 🔥 If you are looking for a great book about personal development, then this book is for you! Its a classic and it has influenced countless researchers, psychologists, and authors. It shows how to live with a powerful ally by your side:The power of the subconscious brain. I can assure you that if you get active and read it, this book will help you improve the quality of your life. ✨
thanks man
^^
hi
i am looking for a book to improve my math skills .i am in second year of high school can anyone recommend me easy to read books ?
Do you know any books for Ielts??
I recommend tutorials and problem sets with solutions
Paul's Online Math Notes! They're really good; I used them when I was self-studying years back. Don't be too intimidated with the hop from algebra/trig to calc 1 on his site -- tbh that's really all you need to start learning calculus, and Paul is super good about giving examples.
thank you very much
I said that I would do a review when I finish the book, so here we go.
⭐ ⭐⭐⭐⭐/ 5 , to' The light you can't see'.
I'm not the best person to talk about historical fiction books because I only read 3 books about it in my life, but I can talk about this book and why you should read it.I have to admit that the first 40% of the book was slow for me, but in the 41%, wow, I couldn't stop to read it. I don't want to do a spoiler so I'm not going to extend this very much. This book has reality, makes you think and it has two hard stories. And I think, at least for me, that makes you** value the things you have**, how lucky you are and, the last and not the least important thing, you can do good or bad things despite what happens around you.
I invite you to read it.
Sorry for the long text 🙂
These ones are just amazing
One of my favorites, definitely
hello, can you offer me some books about "How to be a good IT manager?" or "How to build good business?" Books in english please. Thanks for help 🙂
Anyone read "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" the Hunger Games Prequel. Very good book, recommend it to all of those adventure lovers.
⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
Also, The Boy who Steals Houses is a great book, about a dude with his brother who has autism. Little emotional at times, but great book about love, crime, and most of all - the history behind him
⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
Can anyone tell me what is the sequence of these books james suggested to read !?
atomic habits
deep work
cant hurt me
its ok
can i know how do you read ? those sticky notes got me curious
these are the list of 20 books and a brief introduction about them (video contains English subtitles): https://youtu.be/s6fye8WwN_4
[GIVEAWAY CLOSED]
All the answers and wisdom of the world are contained in #books. I’m so so grateful to my parents for building this habit of reading in me, it has shaped me up a lot. A lot.
I want to share a list of 20 books that you must read in your 20’s.
They are ranging from knowing about introversion, autobiographies of people who rose ...
yeah, sure, I have a color code. So I mark with the sticky notes as I read according to the color code. Then I can know where they are, in case I want to read them again. Example:
🟣 - texts
pink- phrases / love
🔵 (light and dark) - sad moments or sad phrases
fuchsia- thoughts
🟠 - deep thoughts (when the character realizes something important)
🟡 - funny
🟢 - important moment of the book
There are times that I change the meanings of the colors according to the book.
Man, I see in fight club the strongest and smartest men who’ve ever lived. I see all this potential, and I see squandering. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don’t need. We’re the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War’s a spiritual war… our Great Depression is our lives. We’ve all been raised on television to believe that one day we’d all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won’t. And we’re slowly learning that fact. And we’re very, very pissed off.
Fight club monologue, any comments?
I really love this monologue! For me its a very clear criticism of modern capitalism & individualism.
The gain of knowledge and agency through the development of sciences and technologies is more and more beyond any horizon. We put ourselves under performance constraints and probation constraints (from Society/capitalism culture) with regard to leisure time, identity finding, formation of social contacts etc ... and we are increasingly following the calculations of capitalism. This triggers the current problems of leisure stress and consumer stress.... After many years still a current and important topic... (Anyone who has not seen the film - please catch up!) 🔥
@zealous pewter
Thank you!
Here’s what I’ve read recently https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/31514865?shelf=read&sort=date_read&order=d
You are no special snowflake was a big one for me cause growing up you are sold the idea, aim for stars(by self gurus, advertisement , media). A simple life is no longer good enough. The cult of obsessive celebrity, top shot ceos and billionaire fan seems to be ever increasing.
Does anybody have any fantasy/sci-fi recommendations to get me back into reading? I haven't been reading as much as I've wanted to and I feel like some of that has to do with not being very interested in the book I'm reading
What about ready Player one
Trust me, it's a good book, I read it last year and it's a nice dystopian Sci fi book. A must read
Oh and BTW, don't watch the movie
It's not correctly chronological
I'll check it out, thanks!
Yeah, that's a nice list of books
Though I would advice against Think and Grow Rich, since it is more inclined towards religious views and belief in god. A good alternative would be 5 AM Club or Attitude is everything.
AHH ohk np
Yeah that is an really important quote too! It’s funny because i currently reading Charles Taylor and he is literally rejecting this idea of an „romantic cult of the self“ in his book called „The ethics of authenticity“. He is suggesting instead of an idea of the self as a unique snow-flake that the self can only be understood in a social and communal framework... Well i think the universe don't give a **** about us so yeah.. There is one thing as loving yourself, treating yourself right, respecting yourself, celebrating your individuality and another as the obsessive thinking about that we have to be or are particularly special and great....
One of the most influential social philosophers. Well worth reading! ✨ (German version)
Btw, I finding your reading list intriguing. Diverse, contradicting.
Stupid quote. How is it a bad thing that there is no "Great" war? Great depression? I can assure you the people who lived through that time weren't too stoked about their "purpose" being to die in a shitty fucking war.
@gleaming juniper agreed. Wars impose trauma, dying of loved ones, humanity stripped to its bare form. But it gives a sense of purpose that it very true. Heroism is a myth but so is the concept of money, so is religion. Myths are very powerful.
money has a purpose though
@gleaming juniper wars also create new technology more rapidly then
true
so how is it a myth?
@gleaming juniper the idea of myth i got from yuval harari author of sapiens. Its a long answer to your question but it will change your perspective a little.
I've always see people recommending rich dad poor dad book is it that good?
mhmm
it explains liabilities
assets
Ah
I finished the Mistborn trilogy recently, and would highly recommend it to anyone who is even a tiny bit interested in the fantasy genre
here's the first book
is there a function like sharing books with others?
Is any book for physics?
Hello!
Does anyone can recommend me some good books for quantum chem?
Quantum Chemistry by Ira N. Levine
There is a book I am reading now called "Colorless Tsuzakuru Tazaki and His Years Of Pilgrimage" by Murakami. He's a great author. The book is about a guy who, suddenly, has all 4 of his closest friends leave him. As life goes on, he sees more and more people leave him. We don't really see what's wrong with him, and not because we are seeing things from his perspective. This book was written in 3rd person. Maybe he just meets the right people at the wrong time or something along those lines. The book also explores the concept of (tw)||suicide|| early on. It shows the development and life of an incredibly unlucky man
There is a certain charm about the book that keeps me enticed all the time. I'm not sure if it is the characters, or maybe the language, or maybe the description. (Even though the book contains all of these,) I can't pinpoint exactly what I love about it. It really does have this story and world that you get accustomed to. It is only 297 pages so I do recommend you give it a try.
Im sure alot of you guys know about this but if anyone wants to purchase physical books check here first! https://www.thriftbooks.com/?gclid=CjwKCAjwqvyFBhB7EiwAER786cR_S1YGQ37SiAjipWSTp-HPKv0d0Vvanp9H8wLkDjoFab-mfVT1axoCEMYQAvD_BwE I just bought 3 books for 8 dollars super good deal! they are used but it makes no difference

Hi guys. I'm learning about anatomy and biology now. Are there any good books you can recommend to me pls?
Meditations by Marcus Aurelius
probably been recommended a million times before
but 12 rules for life by Jordan Peterson
also just his YT lectures are great
Books I recommend :>>
- The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho (Really recommend :DD)
- The Graveyard by Neil Gaiman
- Poison Garden by Sarah Singleton
- The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart
- The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke
- Number the Star by Lois Lowry
Poison garden 💯 💯

Mein Kampf
Yeah that’s a good self help
Панонските легенди од Св. Климент Охридски
Силјан Штркот
I’ve read atomica habits and known the 4h week
не го лажи бе циган дебел
I’d say Atomics Habit, because it’s more relatable (maybe idk)
Sorry no hablo español
I recommend Klara And The Sun, by Kazuhiro Ishiguro.
Very special read about the world from the eyes of Klara an AF (artificial friend). Has a soft kindness to it, really enjoyed it.
Atomic habits is sooo good read it
Yeah alright
Hey guys, I'm curious about thinking fast and slow by Daniel Kahneman, do u think it's worth to read?
it is definitely worth a read
Yea, it's a good one. I only regret that I have listened it through audio book. There are some details that are better digested and retained if you read them.
Thank you guys for your replies im buying it rn 😄
XD
haha i heard my friends who've read the book say that he was definitely trippin on few of the parts xD
as for norwegian wood, it was a like reading john green with a slower flow. good read for sure but i find the characters kinda problematic. a framework set in male gaze.
@civic widget replied on this channel instead lol
I agree 100 percent with the whole male gaze thing. In some parts i was just too uncomfortable reading
same. i dont think there's a lot of conversation around it tho when there should be. anyways i definitely wanna check out rest of his books.
Yess
Oh, he's criticized for it a lot.
https://osusumebooks.com/blogs/news/haruki-murakami-misogyny-women
One of many recent articles + he gets occasionally roasted on r/menwritingwomen
damn this makes me so happy lmaoo
thanks for sharing!!
r/menwritingwomen is an interesting subreddit too
will check it out, sure.
anyone read discworld
how did you make this list btw
sorry! never more. I really thought that if I spoke in that chat, nobody would see it, they only speak Turkish!
yeah i found it weird how murakami inserted a lot of sexual things in the book seemingly randomly (like when toru was talking to midori about porn) but I guess kind of the point of the book is about toru exploring his sexuality and being young
I would like to introduce another book that I can really recommend! It is called „the strange order of things“ by Antonio Damásio a professor of neuroscience, psychology and philosophy and who is known for his research in the field of consciousness research and neural functions. The book gives insights into the biological basis of feelings, consciousness and the roots of the cultural spirit. Above all, the book strengthens the feelings that are labeled superfluous in our society today compared to intelligence. Very nice to read and there are many interlinked topics such as homeostasis, medicine, art, immortality, AI and the human condition …🔥 if anyone is interested - dm me!
The german version is called "In the beginning there was the feeling"
plus naoko clearly says in the end ||he violated me||. being young is not an excuse for sexual harassment. i think even murakami knows how many of toru's actions were wrong but just pushes it under the he's "cool passive" character.
yeah that was really offputting for me but i loved how murakami depicted the environment around the characters and how he made seemingly mundane things kind of fantastical
yeah his writing and imagery is aesthetically pleasing, i enjoyed that but not his pov and characters.
anyone read extreme ownership by jocko willink?
Any opinion on Looking for Alaska by John Green?
oooh yeah yeah, I read it a couple years ago, I think it's a good book for young teens, the story is engaging and you have a good time reading it, there's some cringe mixed in my memories though (that's why I feel like it's a "young teen's" book) but it's short enough to stay a cool thing to read
Has anyone read the discworld fantasy series
nope but ive heard great things about it
Isn’t he the guy who met Casey Neistat? Same dude who said “Discipline equals freedom”
I need to read that book now! That guy’s amazing!
I would like to recommend book Mastery by Robert Greene. A gr8 book on how you should shape your life with awesome insights on the life of legends like Leonardo Da Vinci, Einstein, Darwin and many others.
Yeah I think he may of appeared in one! He has a really great podcast! I heard his book was pretty good
Hi guys, I just read Atomic Habits and Deep Work and I realllly loved Deep Work. Does anyone have recommendations like that, it can be Cal Newport's another book or something completely different. I am into books that are highly scientific
Is that the "48 laws of power" guy? He's written some great stuff
tHE 5 AM CLUB BY ROBIN SHARMA AND THE SUBTITLE OF NOT GIVING A F*CK BY MARK MANSON
Anyone read project hail mary by andy weir yet? After reading the dumpster fire artemis im hesitant to read this book, but ive only good things about it.
Thank you for pointing this line out, 'Discipline equals freedom'. Enlighted !
Has anyone here read this book called the infinite game by simon sinek
Is 100 years of solitude by Gabriel García Márquez difficult to understand?
@remote scarab oh, read it about 2-3~ months ago. such a gem. I'd say the hardest thing is - don't get lost in the family tree that is described in the book:) really, sometimes it's hard to be that attentive. the other stuff is your own interpretation, haha. storytelling is quite simple, although some people could write an essay based on one single line written by Garcia, you know. classic
depends on what you mean by difficult
Mindset by Carol Dweck , Grit by Angela Duckworth.
just take your time, dont rush and take notes about the names of the family :- )
For fiction i recommend the secret history by donna tartt
Or read something else

What's your opinion on "Animal Farm" by George Orwell?
Anyonne into Jack London's Novel??
Did anyone read digital minimalism by cal newport?
Hello I finished reading it this month. It was very thought-provoking and I questioned my acts like Am I not speaking up when I should. So I recommend this book. Not a very pleasing happy read, but a thought provoking one.
Which one @halcyon flax
A brief history of time
I ve read Martin Eden White Fang And The Iron Heel some of my friends don't really like his writings so I am biased. Im not planning to read Jack London soon.
I've only read Call of the Wild and I found it good, it wasn't incredible but I'd say it's worth a read
I think I also found it interesting how he could describe animals and animal movements well, since I'd never read a book which had an animal's POV
where can i get free books in pdf
I think you can check out internet archive, they have a big collection of free stuff from courses to books
Not sure how up-to-date it is though, considering copyright and all that sutff
I like it more than 1984, just keep in mind it was written when USSR was a thing , I am not sure how old you are or how good you are familiar with a history, if you don't then probably you will have an impression that it's just another book saying government is bad and freedom is good
Well I did read 1984. This is also an anti-totalitarian novel?
Where can I get the pdf of the book 'discrete mathematics with applications second edition by Sussana S Epp'
When should I read the power of habit? I got suggested by someone to first read atomic habits but after looking at James’s book recommendations I was wondering whether I should finish all three books he recommended first and the read then power of habit.
Check out the channel book links
Sort of , if you read 1984 then this one won't be a problem, give it a try
I recommend Catch-22
I am reading animal farm right now, I would definitely recommend it.
had to read that for school a month ago lel
One of the best books, I’ve ever read
you ever read brave new world?
I've read power of habit before all of the other books, I didn't read it before intentionally but it worked out at the end, didn't confuse me. But you can read it after all the books as well
does anyone have any good reccomendations for books written in french? english ones are easier to find by far and i have a bunch in hebrew too i just cannot seem to find a place to buy many
l'amant -Marguerite Duras
Les Miserables -Victor Hugo
Started
niceee!
L'Etranger by Albert Camus
ah thats the book i have to study for my a-level! [like a 3h essay paper on it which is ashame] - good book though ty
Ah, good luck! Interesting read.
oh dear, you're gonna have a blast
It's a great book, a must read for literally everyone, the soma in the book can be conceptualized as literally anything that gives you joy in the world in any era. For now, you can consider soma as our social media and the politically biased media. Being yourself in a world with freedom is more plausible than in a world that holds everyone captive.
That's what I got from the book...
I think that sums up what it is in essence, really profound book and as relevant as ever
La vie devant soi by Emile Ajar (Romain Gary), les Mémoires d'Hadrien by Marguerite Yourcenar, Petit Pays by Gaël Faye, Bel-Ami by Guy de Maupassant
such a great book, totally agree
A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking
b-ok.org (but shhhhhhh)
read After Many A Summer, 1984, and Metamorphisis also if you are into that sort of thing
Count of Monte Cristo was originally in French. Anything by Dumas, and Proust's In Search of Lost Time series was originally in French back in the nineteenth century.
haven’t read many a summer, how is it?
it's another Huxley book, instead of societal distopianism, it's more about how being rich doesn't satisfy you as a person, and the irrational paranoia that comes with being rich, but it's also a drama. Hard to explain before you read it, but I would definitely suggest either that, or something like Pnin by Nabokov for a societal read. Nabokov is one of my favorites though
If you like science fiction and need some beginner/basic knowledge as well as some advanced details, try "The science of Interstellar" by Kip Thorne. Great book.
Hello, does anyone recommend reading "a mind for numbers" by barbara oakley for high school math/science courses? or do those only apply to college courses?
Any recommendation for any insiprattional book or any self help book

There is a free course in Coursera which covers most of the topics
Haven't read the book, but the course was good
Ideas on the book “getting there”?
Wanted to read it so I was trying to see how good it is
I recommend the Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger :DD
I did not like the writing structure at first but as I continued to read, it was alright already. Once I got to the ending of the book I thought "This is sooo good and amazing!" I mean I'm like that to every book I enjoy. XD Yeah you could read that if you want. :>
I read that book for school btw XD we needed to make a book report eheh
I searched and it's pretty interesting, you could go give it a try. :> It's a compilation of stories made by well known people/mentors sharing their journey to success.
ok, thanks
No problem! :>>
Any recommendations on science fiction books?
H2G2
Timmy - a productivity timer with social accountability
I built Timmy over a year ago mostly for my own use, but I hope others find it useful:
It uses elements from the Pomodoro Technique combined with the social accountability of publicly stating what you're going to work on, and how you did when your timer stops. I know it personally helps me stay on track and get sh*t done.I
I’m searching for some books about neuroscience or something like that. If anyone knows some books about it pls answer tagging me.
it might be in Portuguese
Might be a long shot but a famous Dutch Neurologist Dick Swaab wrote "We are our brain", which covers almost everything on the brain in a readable format. Not exactly a textbook, more of a descriptive book if that's perhaps what you're looking for
Can anyone please recommend some good chemistry books? Books that offer a lot of facts(facts on chem and experimental facts) and concepts(like the structure of atom etc etc). Thanks!

current read
@civic widget thanks
"The daily stoic" - recommendation* german version*
Since many here deal with habits and are also interested in Marcus Aurelius and stoicism, I would like to introduce an important part of my morning routine. In addition to my morning meditation, my tea and a mobility workout, I read a page of the book * "The Daily Stoic: 366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance, and the Art of Living" * every day.
Every morning I read and reflect on a saying with an accompanying comment. The book really fills me with joy every day. The daily quotes - mostly from Epiktet, Seneca and Marc Aurel - are followed by interesting interpretations and suggestions from the author. It is very inspiring and really tempts you to deal with it in your own life. ✨🔥
Here is an example (short version):
“It may be true that someone can interfere with our actions, but they cannot interfere with our intentions and our mindsets, and we have the power to adjust to the conditions.
Because the mind can adapt and change everything that hinders our actions." (...)
Feel free to dm me for questions
read Vaclav Smil's stuff on economics, and read Benjamin Graham's Security Analysis or his The Intelligent Investor
hi, do yall have any book that boost your motivation and clear the mind? im looking for some to listen in the morning to get my head right.any recommendation is appreciated!!
For listening i would recommend for example the books "The In-Between", "The Motivation Code" and the book "Unapologetically Ambitious"
is the in-between one from Asanri?
No its from Jeff Goins
Cool I'll take look at them thanks!!!
“The Art of Thinking Clearly” by Rolf Dobelli -
this is the kinda book that can change your perspective on life, highly recommended.
I Totally agree with that!

Hi, thanks for the suggestion. If I'm starting to read this book now, would you suggest me to start from January 1st or from today's date? Thanks 👍
You are welcome! You should begin on the day the book is in your hands!
Thank you very much again!

Hey.....so I wanted to study about algorithms anyone with some book (Or even Tutorial) suggestions?? I am a total beginner so please suggest me something beginner friendly.
can some one tell if the book --" THE ART OF WAR" worth reading for a student ??? is it still relevent today ???
I’ve read it. Something’s always relevant if you have an interest in it - so if u into Chinese military strategy of the 5th century it’s an awesome book lol but besides the obvious reading by people interested in military careers, it’s a recommended lecture to people in areas such as business (in special for management) and u can certainly apply many of the lessons in the book to almost any field of interaction with others where “victory” is involved in some way or another. ‘The wise warrior avoids the battle ‘ -Sun Tzu. It doesn’t glorify war either which I like. Umm… idk how else I can help. Maybe do some more research or read a short concise review if you don’t want to spend time on it. It’s a short book.
thank you for sharing your experience ...
Does anyone can recommend some sort of nutrition book?
if you like Kafka u should read bartleby the scrivener
short story, funny, and it has those Kafkaesque glances
Good book? What are your thoughts on it?

Id try this thankyou !
a deep clean 👍🏽
no worries, lmk what you think when you read it:)
Hello! Does anyone can recommend some architecture or urban books?
I should start this asap
Yes 👍
How to get the most out of the book...?
I have like a month...
(I suck at reading self help books, too)
I'm not too sure what you are asking of
but this book has 10 "challenges" that you can do
it's part of the narrative
and I guess that keeps you engaged and involved in his story and your own life
You have a month until what
i think this falls under the 'urban' category but im reading Curbing Traffic by Chris & Melissa Bruntlett rn
it's a pretty interesting look at how urban planning (and specifically reducing car traffic) effects communities
thanks😃
np
Also gonna check this out, but if I could ask what your takeaway was from this book? I love psychology books as well, but would you say this is pretty practical?
month until my college reopens!
i want to get into reading
i used to read autobiographies and crime books based on the indian mafia and i havent read any books for like two years
any recommendations (preferably crime)
In Cold Blood by Truman Capote is pretty good, its a required book to read in my english class and so far its pretty interesting. It's a crime thriller!
Any biology book recommendations ? im pretty weak at biology, so i wanna prepare for it before college start
Ah I see, true true. Well read the book and tell me how it goes idk!
The first 50 pages are real af man, damn!, ||Learned two things from them (don't wanna spoil em')||
||1. Living based on other people's opinion is a shallow life.||
||2. Living, thinking that you're fooling other's is fooling yourself||
Finished Born a Crime by Trevor Noah. I found it humorous and refreshing, as well as strongly weaving post-apartheid tragedies with a childhood story.
Apparently the audiobook is great too.
thanks ill check it out
I wanted to watch that too
yeah i’d say it’s practical, after reading this i found myself putting most of what i’ve learnt from it into practice and having good outcomes from it 👍🏽
I'm having summer break and I don't really have much to do it is complete-able in a day
As someone mentioned above he gives you some challenges which you stick to. I tweak some of them to fit some of the systems I put in place in my life
no recomendation?
The Selfish Gene and Why We Sleep are related to biology and neurochemistry, they should be good
good to hear that!
thanks...
Atomic Habits; finally got my hands on this beauty. Can't wait to read it!

Symptoms of Being Human - Jeff Garvin
So recently I’ve read a book called Kafka on the shore and I loved it. Can anyone recommend Any similar books ?
Anything by Murakami will be right up your alley then
Norwegian wood is a well known one
South of the border, west of the sun is also good
Thanks
Book recommendation for a beginner pls?
If you want beginner book recommendations I suggest reading Roald Dahl
Nah something above that
If you like detective books, try Agatha christie
^ Agatha Christie is great. And then there were none is probably one of my favorites.
John Green is great for beginners. His novels are easy to read and catchy.
damn thanks a lot!
Are there only recommendations of non-fiction books?
I don't see there any romans, fantasies, horrors etc.
Things like Haruki Murakami, Agatha Christie, Dostoevsky have been recommended if that's what you're looking for?
Hello. Can someone give me recommendation about statistic book for newbie?
@cerulean pollen I ordered it today
thats great! i hope you enjoy it
hey everyone, I just wanted to recommend you all the mistborn saga
brandon sanderson supremacy

Read chap 1 of my book ‘Metal Hearts’
Stick with his mystical realism, avoid anything that smells of auto-biography (his most recent short story for example, so very dreadful). "The Windup Bird Chronicle" is a must read when it comes to Murakami's literature, in my opinion.
And maybe give "One Hundred Years of Solitude" and "Pedro Paramo" a try, they're really good in their own right.
@hollow ospreythanks
does anyone have psychology or sociology book recommandations?
don't know if Thinking fast and slow by Daniel Kahneman qualifies for the psych genre but you can check it out, it's a greatttt book nonetheless
Have you read Deep Work by Cal Newport?
no, haven't heard of it
what's it about?
I haven't read it either I am about to start it.

lemme know how it goes! happy reading!
i finished reading this book called The Ocean At The End Of The Lane by Neil Gaiman, one of my favourite authors and i'd like to share how i felt about it. it was so thrilling, so wonderfully imaginative and surreal that i felt as if i had lived the childhood of the narrator despite knowing that my childhood was nothing like the main character's (a boy, whose name is not revealed through the story). it's about magic, love, death and long forgotten memories that resurface when he revisits his childhood town. i think it was just so intense and heartbreaking yet powerful... also it's similar in a way to The Graveyard Book by the same author but also completely distinct and beautiful. i found the metaphors and descriptions absolutely impeccable, despite the book only being about 230 pages long
Its probably already recommended in the book list, but I'd like to put it out there anyway. For anyone struggling with mental issues, motivational problems or finding purpose in life for that matter, I highly recommend this book: The subtle art of not giving a fuck. I personally had problems with anxiety and the fear of not being good enough. This book has helped me tremendously on these two subjects. Warning, it is very confronting, as it was for me. There was a lot of shit in there that I didn't want to hear but should've in a more nuanced way then other people might've brought it to me (my dad for example). It has a lot of wisdom and life lessons I could relate to. Anyway, I hope the people who read this and haven't read the book yet they will pick it up. Besides being a helping hand, it is actually a very enjoyable and funny read. Cheers! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Subtle_Art_of_Not_Giving_a_Fuck
The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life (first published in 2016) is the second book by blogger and author Mark Manson. In it Manson argues that life's struggles give it meaning, and that the mindless positivity of typical self-help books is neither practical nor helpful. It was a New York Times and...

act your age, eve brown by talia hibbert
^^ beautiful boy by david sheff (incredibly touching recount of the author’s experience with his son’s addiction, kind of educational too) and the goldfinch by donna tartt (same dark academia vibe as the secret history and black chalk lol, kind of thrilling)
Is it the one which has also been produced as a movie starring Timothé Chalamet and Steve Carell

Can anyone recommend some Russian books to read? I want to polish my Russian, and I want to start by reading more :) fiction, science fiction, mystery, or anything that you personally think is a good read.
(The Land of Crimson Clouds). А вообще сам выбери, у них действительно очень много рассказов и романов.
Thank you!
Михаил Булгаков "Мастер и Маргарита"

Anything by Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Gogol, or Pushkin is good, especially Dostoevsky, but I would read Nabokov because he is kind of the master in my opinion (plus he wrote some of his books in English back in the 60s and 70s)

As YeetGuy7791 said, it's a fantastic book, I only remember few of the things but damn it really helps me to not be corny, haha

They're not really my thing, but the story still holds up imo

@slim inlet For me, When I start reading it takes some time to start so i often pause and correct my imagination but as I read more I don't have to pause and the imagination just flows naturally and it's like a movie which plays in my head as the story goes on.
i can imagine after pausing but cant play like movie in y head while reading it would be cool if i could do that hoplefully i will be able to do that soon
Thanks for the recommendations

Hey guys ! I was wondering if anyone had a good life changing book about productivity and procrastination. If so, i would be really interested !
the fact that I still remember what I imagined as a movie for a certain book is insane and nostalgic
sometimes i forget i'm reading fiction and i don't imagine anything, just read. Sometimes I imagine while i'm reading and if there are, I'm looking for fan arts on Pinterest; but I almost never stop reading to start imagining it, I already do it unconsciously
My two favorite nonfiction books; Atomic Habits and Limitless
If anyone read concrete rose by Angie Thomas dm me I wanna talk abt it

Spoiler (it isn't a real spoiler): I finish it now and I'm crying like a baby. Tomorrow I will share the review 🏹
Done reading this bad boiii (as James would say❤️)
ive read this like 5 times this year and bawled my eyes out every single time.
Any good science books.
oh dear ...can't wait !
Surely many of you have heard "I do not have enough words to describe what I have in front of me, what I feel, what I am seeing ... My words are not worthy." The truth is that The song of Achilles is simply combinations of the 26 letters that I am using to write this, and the same ones that we read in most books throughout our lives. But I really feel like I can't explain anything about this book without ruining the author's work. So you are going to read it one more time: words are not enough to describe how I feel.
I read this book because everyone was talking about it, so it had to be for something. I won it at a giveaway, read it in one day, and cried like a baby (I also wanted to throw the book out the window three times). There is not much story behind my reading, but I leave that to Madeline Miller, she is better at telling stories of what I will be able to be one day.
'Those seconds, half-second, that the line of our gaze connected, were the only moment in my day that I felt anything at all'.
The retelling, the writing, the characters ... I hope one day I'll be able to write something half as good as this.
I don't expect you to read the book after this, but if you do, do it without knowing what it's about, just start reading. I hope that if you decide to read it you will enjoy it as much as I do.
And thanks for having read this far.
Achilles. Patroclus. Troy
-The song of Achilles 🏹
This is so beautiful ❤️
omg im hyped to read this now !! thanks for the review ^^
Thank you!!🤍
Ow, thank you. You would love it! 🏹 🤍
It depends, science as in science fiction, or science as in science nonfiction? If the former, then I suggest Zeroes by Scott Westerfeld. If the latter, maybe try The God Equation by Michio Kaku. I was waiting all summer to get ahold of TGE so idk what it's about but maybe you might like it. Hope this helps
I also have more Science Fiction recommendations if you want more
Thanks. Either or will do.
I am taking science fiction as a GE and the goal was to find some good reading material for me.
Let me know if you need more.
Okay. I have heard of Michio Kaku.
your revieww
I hv to read this bookk now!!!!
would anyone recommend reading shadow and bone by leigh bardugo?
I finished them 4 days ago and well, I like them, improves as the books progress. At first they cost me but they are fine (4 ⭐ and 4.5 ⭐ ), and if you want to read the Six of Crows bilogy people advise you to read these first to introduce you to the world
Yeah, absolutely, you have to read it !!!
ive actually purchased six of crows before shadow and bone but found that i was very very perplexed and overwhelmed by only the first chapter and the content of it. that is what lead me to think of buying shadow and bone. thank you for ur opinion !!
just bought the book a couple of days ago… very excited to read it now.
Has anyone read the personal recollections of joan of arc by mark twain?
Mark Twain
Anyone can recommend an economics book?

Ohh I’ll check it out thanks!
Currently reading: The Alice Network (historical fiction) 348/565 , and it's being so good. soon the review✨
Why Nations Fail by Daron Acemoglu & James Robinson
oh yeah ive seen that, i m also thinking of freakonomics
freakonomics, i'm not sure if it is really economics but, is very cool
Robert Schiller has a couple of great books, such as Irrational Exuberance
will sure add that to the list, thanks
If you (or anyone!) are looking to read more economic theory, then start with Friedman's Capitalism and Freedom, follow that with Marx's Communist Manifesto. Those two are a good start for understanding the two extremes of economic thought (no government intervention vs strict government control). From there you can branch off into John Stuart Mill (finding the balance between authority vs freedom), Veblen (focus on the importance of workers), Keynes (sometimes the government needs to intervene), and Schumpeter (using capitalism to achieve socialism). You'll come to see that Marx and Friedman are both flawed in their own ways, and the rest are overly idealistic in finding the balance between the two. Even if you disagree with the author and want to strangle them it's still important to read widely in economics to form your own opinions and come to your own conclusions.
currently reading capitalism and freedom and thanks for some great recommendations i'm a junior and want to study econ in uni
oh wow thanks a lot for the detailed reccomendation will look into it!
im hoping to take a summer school on economics so i thought its good to get a heads up since i dont have much classes on economics in my major 🙂

The Alice Network by Kate Quinn
To write. Delete. To write. Delete. I guess it's a process that everyone who writes goes through. It is ironic that possibly when you want to write something, you end up erasing more than you get to write.
When they say that it is difficult to review a book, it's true. I can't imagine having to write the book.
What should be the hardest part of writing? The beginning? The end? The development? Anyway, I fell in love with Kate on the second page, and she continued to do so on the last.
"I want to hear the rest of your story."
There are thousands of stories that we will never hear, lost in time, in people's memory. But Kate has given us one that we can read. I can't say much about the book without spoiling the surprise, so I'm going to just put a few things.
-
I fell in love with some characters in the first conversation. I admired them in the second. And I haven't stopped, not even after the last one. Strong, powerful, intelligent, warriors; in a different way, but they shone with their own light.
-
Writing. Somehow Kate has written the book and made me unable to stop reading. Those books are worth it.
-She has made me laugh, cry, smile, get angry. But she has made me admire, admire people that I did not know and never will, but that Kate has let me do it even for a few seconds.
So I hope you already know that this book has ⭐⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
any classic recommendations?
Kill a Mockingbird and The Portrait of Dorian Gray
Thank you! I’ve read TKM it’s great
Kill a Mockingbird is my fav book!
is this book good for people who like dan brown?
I haven't read Dan Brown but I think he writes thriller, if I'm not mistaken. This book is Greek mythology, it is historical fiction, I think it will not resemble any Dan book. But you can give it a try, it may surprise you
Anything but nonfiction
If you're down to read a gritty (and disturbingly realistic) dystopian scifi novel, I highly recommend the Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler
it has an element to it that makes it a bit difficult to read (btw, tw for depictions of violence and mentions of SA) but it's also worth the read if you can get through it
it was written in the 90s, set in 2025. the realism and prescience is part of what makes it so disturbing. I'm reading the sequel right now and so far it's even more unnerving. it includes, among other things, a racist demagogue candidate who ran under the campaign of "Make America Great Again"
Classics:
- To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
- Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brönte
- The Portrait of Dorian Gray
Romance: - The pact by Karina Halle (friends to lovers)
- The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren (enemies to lovers)
- all Colleen Hoover books : It ends with us, November 9, All your perfects…
Fantasy / romance: - Serpent and dove by Shelby Mahurin
- A court of Throne and roses - Sarah J Mass
- White hot kiss ( The dark elements) by Jennifer L. Armentrout
- Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo
Historical fiction - The Nightingale
- All the light that you can't see
- The Alice Network
- The song of Achilles
- Winter Garden
i recommend The Lies of Locke Lamora series if you haven’t read it already, one of my faves
from Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu
The poppy war
oh yeah, I've heard a lot about this book, but I haven't read it yet
Thanks!
Thanks!
could anyone recommend me a book by haruki murakami? there is many to choose from and ive never read this texts
Recently read South of the Border, West of the Sun by him, but I heard Norwegian Wood is pretty good
Heard tremendous things about this one, have it on the shelf and rearing to read after my next book.
Norwegian Wood is the most accessible (i.e. not as much of a lucid dream as his other works). Also a great novel imo.
I'm having difficulty in finding a good translation for this book....most of them delivers different meanings. But this one(you posted) seems like a good one.... may I know the source?
Kafka on the shore was my first of his writings. Definitely a read. I had goosebumps in the first 4 pages itself.
Does anyone have insight as to how to get out of and avoid burnout? Despite being relatively driven previously, i have been struggling to push myself lately, and i would like to hear from u guys. I understand that this thread is for book recommendations, but I feel like this question would get overlooked if i was to ask it in general chat. I would appreciate any help.
