@brisk sphinx I know you asked for a book, but using a recommendation from my coach, I highly recommend trying to be as intentional every moment and practice making lots of decisions big and small. The key to good decision-making is to make lots of decisions. Like Gary Vaynerchuk once said, in terms of amount of good vs. bad decisions he wants to make, he wants it to be 355:345. Many many decisions but overall net positive. So think about basic things you decide moment to moment and practice making conscious decisions.

Usually I try to find some better, really good books if I'm feeling that way. Also reframing the way you think of books, like 'I'm being given access to an extremely unlikely chain of thoughts coming together that would take me years to come up with by myself', or 'when I read I learn new things, which lets me reshape how I see the world around me'. Besides that just telling yourself 'I want to be a reader'.

#

A lot of times what makes me lose interest with reading is if I read a so-so or even a fairly bad book.

gleaming juniper

Guys, how can i love the reading? like, reading it's bored for me and i don't really like to, but i need to, cuz of the college the next year.

# gleaming juniper Maybe you're not reading what you are supposed to be reading.

The only issue with this is it seems to imply that things that cause us pain or fear are generally more correct. It's an easy thing to assume, but in many cases it simply isn't true. I've noticed that was an unconscious bias I had for awhile, the more I feared something the more I gave it weight, but it led to many faulty assumptions/conclusions.

gleaming juniper
# golden mesa The only issue with this is it seems to imply that things that cause us pain or ...

Not really, the books you're reading should break your belief system, a man with a broken belief system is a mad man, you'll run around your house trying to justify what's real and what's not, this is what some really great books does for you. I'm not a literary expert but if you read crime and punishment and the idiot, those two books are like the opposite of each other sorta like the link between two extremes, Extreme Atheism vs. Extreme Faith in christianity as an example. So either you're an Atheist or a Christian you'll get a good/new perspective, those two books aren't necessarily scary but they are unbelievably true. The truth is somewhat scary though.

#

This kind of feeling also happened when you read the alchemist, when you realize more of life is dependent on following what you love and if your belief system was said otherwise, you'll completely get disfigured and it gives you a 'blow on the head' as kafka said.

golden mesa
# gleaming juniper Not really, the books you're reading should break your belief system, a man with...

This isn't exactly right. It's more like the books you are reading should help give you new information, new perspectives, help you reevaluate the current information you already have, and inspire self-improvement (like your point about trying to think about and justify your evaluations and what you think you know). None of this implies any sort of pain or breaking, although perhaps those things may occur. There can be things you can read that can cause you pain or fear, and be total nonsense and untruth. In fact there are a vast amount of such things in the world, and it isn't a sign that what you are hearing is good.

golden mesa
gleaming juniper
#

The things which cause you pain or fear won't wake you up with a blow on the head. It pushes you down the rabbit hole even further.

#

But the books Kafka was saying are truths that frightens you but also builds you up.

golden mesa
#

Actually emotions are fairly dependent on our thoughts and our beliefs. You can think of them like evaluations, and such evaluations are dependent on known information and experience.

gleaming juniper
#

If you believe something and I said "whatever you believe is not a true thing and truth is way deep", won't you get thrown back a bit?

golden mesa
gleaming juniper
golden mesa
#

Some people have a deep thirst for new, novel information.

gleaming juniper
#

Like, sometimes people believe in something all their life and suddenly they read something that says otherwise, they'll soon get anxious or have their flight or fight response thrown.

#

Not everyone has that, and not every books needs to do that for you.

#

But if you're the same person before picking up a book and after putting a book down, it's better you haven't picked up a book [might be flawed but this is what I understand from Kafka].

golden mesa
# gleaming juniper Like, sometimes people believe in something all their life and suddenly they rea...

You can think about information as being what we know, which is necessarily finite, and what we don't know, which is infinite. People who claim their finite amount of known information is the most important information, that its 100% correct, and that nothing in the infinite unknown knowledge out there is more important or correct are in for a rude awakening. That being said I respect that with mathematics they at least try to prove that what they know is correct, so even if limitless unknown information is out there, they are standing on firm ground (at least more firm than everything else people know).

gleaming juniper
#

I agree with you.

golden mesa
#

But if the change is growth and improvement then ill agree

gleaming juniper
golden mesa
gleaming juniper
#

I mean, it's honestly not a good practice to get a conspiracy theory book and be woke...

golden mesa
#

although you can get some guesses or predictions sure

#

That's why people say never judge a book by its cover, or don't believe gossip. You can only really know once youve read it and interpreted it for yourself

gleaming juniper
#

Blindly going into something is not rewarding. Our human brain works better if we know some little things about the book. Getting new information is pointless if you're not going to use it tomorrow or in the future.

gleaming juniper
golden mesa
#

and I disagree that information has to be useful or practical to have a point to it

#

perhaps its uses or practicalness is just unknown to us first of all

gleaming juniper
gleaming juniper
golden mesa
#

And there can be cases where going in blind allows you to find the correct interpretation, whereas if you listen to other people talking about it it can make you focus on the incorrect context or meaning

golden mesa
gleaming juniper
#

wait

gleaming juniper
#

but the same can't be said for The Trial or Metamorphosis

gleaming juniper
#

I'm not saying in it's entierty

golden mesa
gleaming juniper
#

ah, you're mis-interpreting

golden mesa
#

The usefulness/practicalness was simply unknown information at the time

gleaming juniper
#

You just should not read 10 novels in 10 days and be like I know everything.

#

You should read a novel and analyze and it and study more about it and understand the novel upto a certain extent as much as you can so that you feel that you actually learned something that might be useful in the future and then put it down.

gtg nice talking with you...

Anyone read excellent sheep? Is it worth a read

golden mesa
# full kindle Yes I agree it is good to know about all the factual stuff, but if you keep stuf...

I don't think we need to place arbitrary limits on ourselves and our growth/improvements. Knowing more things, and understanding what we really don't know just makes us wiser, not a computer. It's like should I stop working out and gaining strength because I'm going to turn into a forklift? Should I stop running because one day there will be no difference between me and a car/bicycle? I don't think these fears are valid.

#

It's human nature to fear the unknown and new information, but its also our instinct to seek it.

#

I don't believe that statement though. I think fear is more of an evaluation, through our previous experiences, thoughts and beliefs, of what we are detecting with our senses, and also a motivator for action to change things.

#

But its also biologically programmed into us, like we are designed to interpret some basic senses as causing fear at the very least. Like if something caused us pain in the past, we may be scared of that thing, until we learn that certain conditions need to be met before it would actually cause us pain, etc. Since we aren't biologically programmed to understand death, but have to learn of it from our parents/environment, I don't think it can be the source of fear.

Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love.
And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied
is to do what you believe is great work.
And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle.
As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship,
it just gets better and better as the years roll on.
So keep looking. Don't settle.

This book entitled "the 5 languages of love, the secret of love that lasts" by Gary Chapman I read it to me because I am convinced that "if you are full of love you are invincible" I am obsessed with it, the more things you love, the more life you live and the more man (or woman) you become, the more you love what you do, the more productive you are and the more productive you are, the happier you are.
The book basically deals with 5 languages of love that people have, it has many important things to apply with respect to coexistence, here I expose what I consider applicable according to the language of love:

  1. Techniques applicable to the language of love: words of affirmation
Write on your mirror: words are important!
For a week make the record of your words of affirmation you will be surprised how well ... or badly you are doing it
Praise your loved one in the presence of other people, this usually has twice the positive impact
Thank your loved one for something routine, you will surprise him
  2. Techniques applicable to the language of love: quality time
Define specific time and place for planned fellowship
Ask your loved one five activities that they would like to do with you, make plans to do one per month, if money is a problem intersperse with free activities
Send photos to your loved one to make them feel like they are with you
Think of an activity that your partner loves and you don't, set a date to join in giving your best effort
Plan a weekend without commitments, only rest, that is in the next six months
Take time to talk about the events of the day
#
  1. Techniques applicable to the language of love: acts of service
Ask your spouse for a list of 10 things they would like you to do next month, after I prioritized them by listing them from 1 to 10; prepare to live with a happy loved one
If you have more money than time, hire someone to help you with the acts of service (help with chores, clean your pet, clean at home, etc.)
Support your partner with her homework when she is busy or when she is busy with something
  2. Techniques applicable to the language of love: physical touch
Hold your partner's hand as they walk
Hug your loved one, give him a massage, say nice things
When you pray or meditate with your partner take her by the hand
Get a foot massage prior to intimacy
When you are in a meeting with friends or family, hug your loved one
  3. Techniques to stop hating your loved one
Ask how you can be a better partner to your loved one
When you receive positive feedback, each month make a simple request that corresponds to your primary love language to fill your empty tank.
When your partner responds to your requests, you can react with positive emotions
As you progress "don't rest on your laurels"

I don't want to do a spoiler so I'm not going to extend this very much. This book has reality, makes you think and it has two hard stories. And I think, at least for me, that makes you** value the things you have**, how lucky you are and, the last and not the least important thing, you can do good or bad things despite what happens around you.
I invite you to read it.
Sorry for the long text 🙂

these are the list of 20 books and a brief introduction about them (video contains English subtitles): https://youtu.be/s6fye8WwN_4

[GIVEAWAY CLOSED]

All the answers and wisdom of the world are contained in #books. I’m so so grateful to my parents for building this habit of reading in me, it has shaped me up a lot. A lot.

I want to share a list of 20 books that you must read in your 20’s.
They are ranging from knowing about introversion, autobiographies of people who rose ...

# viscid vessel can i know how do you read ? those sticky notes got me curious

yeah, sure, I have a color code. So I mark with the sticky notes as I read according to the color code. Then I can know where they are, in case I want to read them again. Example:
🟣 - texts
pink- phrases / love
🔵 (light and dark) - sad moments or sad phrases
fuchsia- thoughts
🟠 - deep thoughts (when the character realizes something important)
🟡 - funny
🟢 - important moment of the book
There are times that I change the meanings of the colors according to the book.

Man, I see in fight club the strongest and smartest men who’ve ever lived. I see all this potential, and I see squandering. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don’t need. We’re the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War’s a spiritual war… our Great Depression is our lives. We’ve all been raised on television to believe that one day we’d all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won’t. And we’re slowly learning that fact. And we’re very, very pissed off.

Fight club monologue, any comments?

# spring echo Man, I see in fight club the strongest and smartest men who’ve ever lived. I see...

I really love this monologue! For me its a very clear criticism of modern capitalism & individualism.
The gain of knowledge and agency through the development of sciences and technologies is more and more beyond any horizon. We put ourselves under performance constraints and probation constraints (from Society/capitalism culture) with regard to leisure time, identity finding, formation of social contacts etc ... and we are increasingly following the calculations of capitalism. This triggers the current problems of leisure stress and consumer stress.... After many years still a current and important topic... (Anyone who has not seen the film - please catch up!) 🔥

Yeah that is an really important quote too! It’s funny because i currently reading Charles Taylor and he is literally rejecting this idea of an „romantic cult of the self“ in his book called „The ethics of authenticity“. He is suggesting instead of an idea of the self as a unique snow-flake that the self can only be understood in a social and communal framework... Well i think the universe don't give a **** about us so yeah.. There is one thing as loving yourself, treating yourself right, respecting yourself, celebrating your individuality and another as the obsessive thinking about that we have to be or are particularly special and great....

There is a book I am reading now called "Colorless Tsuzakuru Tazaki and His Years Of Pilgrimage" by Murakami. He's a great author. The book is about a guy who, suddenly, has all 4 of his closest friends leave him. As life goes on, he sees more and more people leave him. We don't really see what's wrong with him, and not because we are seeing things from his perspective. This book was written in 3rd person. Maybe he just meets the right people at the wrong time or something along those lines. The book also explores the concept of (tw)||suicide|| early on. It shows the development and life of an incredibly unlucky man

There is a certain charm about the book that keeps me enticed all the time. I'm not sure if it is the characters, or maybe the language, or maybe the description. (Even though the book contains all of these,) I can't pinpoint exactly what I love about it. It really does have this story and world that you get accustomed to. It is only 297 pages so I do recommend you give it a try.

I would like to introduce another book that I can really recommend! It is called „the strange order of things“ by Antonio Damásio a professor of neuroscience, psychology and philosophy and who is known for his research in the field of consciousness research and neural functions. The book gives insights into the biological basis of feelings, consciousness and the roots of the cultural spirit. Above all, the book strengthens the feelings that are labeled superfluous in our society today compared to intelligence. Very nice to read and there are many interlinked topics such as homeostasis, medicine, art, immortality, AI and the human condition …🔥 if anyone is interested - dm me!

It's a great book, a must read for literally everyone, the soma in the book can be conceptualized as literally anything that gives you joy in the world in any era. "The daily stoic" - recommendation* german version* ASpeepostudy

#

Since many here deal with habits and are also interested in Marcus Aurelius and stoicism, I would like to introduce an important part of my morning routine. In addition to my morning meditation, my tea and a mobility workout, I read a page of the book * "The Daily Stoic: 366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance, and the Art of Living" * every day.

Every morning I read and reflect on a saying with an accompanying comment. The book really fills me with joy every day. The daily quotes - mostly from Epiktet, Seneca and Marc Aurel - are followed by interesting interpretations and suggestions from the author. It is very inspiring and really tempts you to deal with it in your own life. ✨🔥

Here is an example (short version):
“It may be true that someone can interfere with our actions, but they cannot interfere with our intentions and our mindsets, and we have the power to adjust to the conditions.
Because the mind can adapt and change everything that hinders our actions." (...)
Feel free to dm me for questions ASyay

# serene terrace can some one tell if the book --" THE ART OF WAR" worth reading for a student ??...

I’ve read it. Something’s always relevant if you have an interest in it - so if u into Chinese military strategy of the 5th century it’s an awesome book lol but besides the obvious reading by people interested in military careers, it’s a recommended lecture to people in areas such as business (in special for management) and u can certainly apply many of the lessons in the book to almost any field of interaction with others where “victory” is involved in some way or another. ‘The wise warrior avoids the battle ‘ -Sun Tzu. It doesn’t glorify war either which I like. Umm… idk how else I can help. Maybe do some more research or read a short concise review if you don’t want to spend time on it. It’s a short book.

i finished reading this book called The Ocean At The End Of The Lane by Neil Gaiman, one of my favourite authors and i'd like to share how i felt about it. it was so thrilling, so wonderfully imaginative and surreal that i felt as if i had lived the childhood of the narrator despite knowing that my childhood was nothing like the main character's (a boy, whose name is not revealed through the story). it's about magic, love, death and long forgotten memories that resurface when he revisits his childhood town. i think it was just so intense and heartbreaking yet powerful... also it's similar in a way to The Graveyard Book by the same author but also completely distinct and beautiful. i found the metaphors and descriptions absolutely impeccable, despite the book only being about 230 pages long

Its probably already recommended in the book list, but I'd like to put it out there anyway. For anyone struggling with mental issues, motivational problems or finding purpose in life for that matter, I highly recommend this book: The subtle art of not giving a fuck. I personally had problems with anxiety and the fear of not being good enough. This book has helped me tremendously on these two subjects. Warning, it is very confronting, as it was for me. There was a lot of shit in there that I didn't want to hear but should've in a more nuanced way then other people might've brought it to me (my dad for example). It has a lot of wisdom and life lessons I could relate to. Anyway, I hope the people who read this and haven't read the book yet they will pick it up. Besides being a helping hand, it is actually a very enjoyable and funny read. Cheers! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Subtle_Art_of_Not_Giving_a_Fuck

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life (first published in 2016) is the second book by blogger and author Mark Manson. In it Manson argues that life's struggles give it meaning, and that the mindless positivity of typical self-help books is neither practical nor helpful. It was a New York Times and...

(The Land of Crimson Clouds). А вообще сам выбери, у них действительно очень много рассказов и романов.

Surely many of you have heard "I do not have enough words to describe what I have in front of me, what I feel, what I am seeing ... My words are not worthy." The truth is that The song of Achilles is simply combinations of the 26 letters that I am using to write this, and the same ones that we read in most books throughout our lives. But I really feel like I can't explain anything about this book without ruining the author's work. So you are going to read it one more time: words are not enough to describe how I feel.
I read this book because everyone was talking about it, so it had to be for something. I won it at a giveaway, read it in one day, and cried like a baby (I also wanted to throw the book out the window three times). There is not much story behind my reading, but I leave that to Madeline Miller, she is better at telling stories of what I will be able to be one day.
'Those seconds, half-second, that the line of our gaze connected, were the only moment in my day that I felt anything at all'.
The retelling, the writing, the characters ... I hope one day I'll be able to write something half as good as this.
I don't expect you to read the book after this, but if you do, do it without knowing what it's about, just start reading. I hope that if you decide to read it you will enjoy it as much as I do.
And thanks for having read this far.

If you (or anyone!) are looking to read more economic theory, then start with Friedman's Capitalism and Freedom, follow that with Marx's Communist Manifesto. Those two are a good start for understanding the two extremes of economic thought (no government intervention vs strict government control). From there you can branch off into John Stuart Mill (finding the balance between authority vs freedom), Veblen (focus on the importance of workers), Keynes (sometimes the government needs to intervene), and Schumpeter (using capitalism to achieve socialism). You'll come to see that Marx and Friedman are both flawed in their own ways, and the rest are overly idealistic in finding the balance between the two. Even if you disagree with the author and want to strangle them it's still important to read widely in economics to form your own opinions and come to your own conclusions.

The Alice Network by Kate Quinn

To write. Delete. To write. Delete. I guess it's a process that everyone who writes goes through. It is ironic that possibly when you want to write something, you end up erasing more than you get to write.
When they say that it is difficult to review a book, it's true. I can't imagine having to write the book.
What should be the hardest part of writing? The beginning? The end? The development? Anyway, I fell in love with Kate on the second page, and she continued to do so on the last.

"I want to hear the rest of your story."

There are thousands of stories that we will never hear, lost in time, in people's memory. But Kate has given us one that we can read. I can't say much about the book without spoiling the surprise, so I'm going to just put a few things.

  • I fell in love with some characters in the first conversation. I admired them in the second. And I haven't stopped, not even after the last one. Strong, powerful, intelligent, warriors; in a different way, but they shone with their own light.

  • Writing. Somehow Kate has written the book and made me unable to stop reading. Those books are worth it.

-She has made me laugh, cry, smile, get angry. But she has made me admire, admire people that I did not know and never will, but that Kate has let me do it even for a few seconds.

So I hope you already know that this book has ⭐⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

If you're down to read a gritty (and disturbingly realistic) dystopian scifi novel, I highly recommend the Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler

#

it has an element to it that makes it a bit difficult to read (btw, tw for depictions of violence and mentions of SA) but it's also worth the read if you can get through it

#

it was written in the 90s, set in 2025. the realism and prescience is part of what makes it so disturbing. I'm reading the sequel right now and so far it's even more unnerving. it includes, among other things, a racist demagogue candidate who ran under the campaign of "Make America Great Again"

Yeah its a great purchase you can store many books on it and it wont take any shelf space
also i download pdfs from the web and read the books,

i think I have the basic model, that i also ig 4-5yrs old
amazon keeps sending out updates so there isnt any issue with that too
higher models have features which, according to me, are not required, if you are only gonna use your kindle as an e reader..
