Hello
Hello
Is this a EnGlIsH book ? 🤔
Has anyone here already read one of the books james recommended, if yes, which one is the best?
Poor dad rich dad
Did you read it?
Thank you so much 💕💕
and from the books 'atomic habits', 'deep work' or 'can't hurt me'?
Yes
Rn ı am reading atomic habits
U?
you are welcome 🙂 it's really great - I downloaded a couple of AP prep books from there, including the most recent ones. And you can also find there all the books James recommended too, so you don't have to buy them 😉 .
no i didn't yet but i want to know witch one to start with
I see Gluck
bro i think so i still havent figured it out aahha
hey guys! i just purchased 'godel escher bach', have any of you already read it? i heard it's really good

bro i was joking lol
why would i buy a book in a language i cant read, im from brazil hahahah
they both die at the end... I mourned for days
I read atomic habits (it's a good read but you gotta try to apply it to your life or you don't benefit from it). I started deep work but couldn't finish it, will pick it up again in a bit
I think the order that he suggested the books to be read is the order you've listed them in lol
Can someone summarise deep work?if yes then plz go ahead
idk hahaha i'm from brazil too
AAAAA where do you live?
São Paulo, and you?
Rio
Hello, Brazil too. Caruaru-PE
yoo hello
hiiii
I think we can talk in portuguese at the non english chat
lets go
Brazilll let's goo
les goo
I ordered deep work yesterday
You've all read it?
YUH
out of all his recommendations, its been the most difficult to implement for me.
i probably need to re-read it, but i found a bit difficult to get through
i finished "the stranger", i love it. although I did not get it at first
I think atomic habits is the first self help book I might actually finish
I’m going to buy it
I m currently reading it and oh my god I have literally just read 1/4th of the book till now and I have already cried after reading it.
im currently reading cant hurt me
@serene atlas Is it called "A little life" by Hanya?
No I'm talking about the book 'They both die at the End' by Adam Silvera @terse relic
I haven't read this book yet but how is it?
@serene atlas A little life is actually good. Thanks for the name of the name 🙂
Sure I'll add it to my tbr thanks😇
@serene atlas Anytime! 🙂 Did you read "One of us is lying"?
Oh yes I have it's a good twisted one
Have u read "We Were Liars"?
yes
Um nope. Need to. How's it?
It's an awesome book .
Ohh wow I am currently reading it..
That's great!
Does anyone have some good fiction book recommendations that have lessons in it? I like self improvement books but I kind of want a change to something with a fiction story that gets to the same point
Ender's game maybe?
What is it about? Is the movie the same thing?
perhaps try haruki murakami's books?
idk, but I think that yes, the movie is the same. Mark Zuckerberg recommmended it

#currentlyreading Routledge Handbook of Human Security by Martin and Owen 🙂
I want to read a book in French. Do you guys have some recommendations? It should not be too difficult
freud " civilization and it's discontent "
what is your level in average?
I’ve been learning French for 6 years now. I would say language level B2
mmh maybe you should begin with books you have alreday read in your language but translated in French (so you are able to follow the plot easier); children or Young adults books. Try looking into "Le petit Prince" de Saint Exupéry, "Les vacances du petit Nicolas", or some comics like "Astérix" and such.
Thank you!! That was very helpful 🙂
I'm the same as you and I'm reading 'a fille comme elle' for school right now.... sometimes hard to read but overall a great read!
I’m going to have a look at the book. Thank you! I’ve read some books at school as well but they were all kind of boring. But I still want to learn more in French after graduating from school
When I wanted to learn French I just read Harry Potter in French
I totally get it! I have the same
That’s a great idea! I also tried watching French movies but I didn’t understand anything because they were talking very fast😂
I feel like it's harder to maintain your french language knowledge than to learn french with 0 knowledge...
Idk what to do lol
Yeah that’s so true! For me it’s literally the same and I got the feeling that I will have to put much effort into keeping up my French skills. But books and movies are a good idea because you could even improve your language skills
I agree with this so much. I have been learning french for years now and I feel like I go 3 steps forward and 2 steps backwards while trying to maintain my knowledge.
I am reading Me before You right now, I like it, kinda dark sometimes.
French is my first language so feel free to ask for some help 🙂
I think the most difficult part about speaking French are the tenses. Like when do I use plus-que-parfait? I always struggle with finding out which tense to use (when I’m not speaking in the present tense or passé composé).
Yeah I agree, it is hard to get used to..
I also got a recommendation for those who want to keep up their language skills. There’s an app called “Tandem” in which you can chat with other people who have French (for example) as their first language. You can send them a message and talk about different topics and they can correct your mistakes so that you can improve your language skills.
Do you read 1984 or brave new world
I've heard about it before but never tried
Me neither tbh but one of my friends tried it and she was very happy with the app
I've been using Tandem for years and actually made some good friends through it ^^
How cool! Which language did you learn on the app?
I started with English in 2017, then switched to Chinese, but I'd say only English. You kind of need o be at least intermediate at the language you want to learn to actually benefit from those types of app
@gleaming juniper
Okay thank you! I think I’ll try it out soon
Does James uses Goodreads
omg what happend to your name
I'm super new to this discord thing but hi i wanted to know if ppl find more advantage to reading online/ebooks rather than physical ones
i think ebooks are a great way of reading things and figuring out if you like them before you buy them physical, but having the book in your hands is a pretty nice felling, also if you like writing/making notes on the book
new cult ^^
that's hard ahaha find one that you cant @ here ^^
hey guys got any reccomendations for someone who has never a read a single book in their life ?
theres this book called How to read a book, it teaches you the most effective ways of extracting knowledge and understanding from the book youre reading
it's best if you can also identify your current interests so you can narrow down your probable options. you can start with what you're most curious about/etc... afterward, your interests would broaden eventually anyhow and reading would be a lot more fun!
Are there any places you can get a pdf of Atomic Habits?
what would the hardcover cost?
I have a soft copy of atomic habits. Please give me your mail ID
I have a 26pages pdf summary if you want
Actually I would love that summary
check dms
Here you go 🙂
Done
Thank you so much!
I started 1984 few days ago
can you suggest more books like little women
Which one are you reading? I'm reading Rookies
ah I liked reading Rookies
it depends what do you like (poetic, classic, fiction, non fiction, personal growth...) , i have a lot of book recommendations 😆
i did the same, i was crying a entire week and now i can't forget the pain
but i don't regret, ( i love Willem with all my heart)
The Nightingale. by Kristin Hannah
Guysss if you haven't yet and you like the academic aesthetic I REALLY recommend a Secret History. Just finished it and it's one of the best books I've read.
I prefer ebooks, I like hauling 10+ books around and unless I wanna have a broken back, ebooks help a lot with that.
i love physical books, also i read a lot online because otherwise I will bepoor. But if you don't know what is better for you i recommend try the both ways, and look which do you like more. Physical books have the thing of turn the page, the touch and smell, and i studied that we are more focus on paper books than in online books. Also, you can mark and point out the phrases. But online books have their advantages too
Recommend me books for english learning 🥺
What is your language level?
Lower intermediate
i'm currently reading the Adversary, a book from Emmanuel Carrère, a french writer. It's about a man with a loving family, friends and a good situation who suddenly decided to kill his entire family. The more we progress in the book, the more we understand why and how his life lead him to do such a terrible thing. That's pretty interesting
you should read Alice in Wonderland
You could read a book from a movie you already watched because then you know the plot and understand the vocabulary more easily.
I personally like reading books from Sophie Kinsella but I’d say they are upper intermediate.
yea I was thinking HP, Narnia -
And I'd personally recommend Zusak's works for young adults (?), like 'Getting the girl'. I've read them at intermediate.
do you have a kindle?
I do yes
that’s cool i have one too it was the best investment ever cuz i don’t have to keep paying for books
Got any personal growth books reccomendations?
guys for anyone interested in nuclear science, i suggest the "particle at the end of the universe"
it is a book dedicated on Higgs boson, the 'God particle'.
Even though I am a novice in nuclear science, i found it understandable and fun.
i didn't read a book of personal growth but if you go to goodreads there are a lot of book recommendations, i can recommend you novel books if you want
I love 'The 7 Habits of a Highly Effective Person'. I've read it 3 times and have gained something new each time. 🙂
I don't think manga really count as book books since it's mostly artwork rather than literary. I don't count manga towards my yearly reading goal. They can count as reading but not books, if that makes sense. But I'm sure people wouldn't mind talking about them.
I recently got a kindle and it's nice to be able to pick up reading whenever I want to. I read multiple books at once so I usually split between actual books and the kindle. Plus with libby I can borrow ebooks from my local library.
Machanea
LOL was wondering abt that too XD
Ayy :3
Second, what do you guys think of the Miss Peregrine's series? At first I thought it was horror, but apparently it isn't
I'm sorry wat dat-
so happy with james' top 3 recs; i've read atomic habits and deep work already but am re-reading deep work and am wondering if i'd read can't hurt me after-- has anyone read it and would rec it too
I am reading atomic habits right now and I feel like it has already changed me lol. I will hopefully read "deep work" soon.
just buying them 🤓
The book can't hurt me is an absolute must read @rose goblet I read it before I found this channel and disc and it got me on the right path towards a better mindset. I recommend getting the audio book because in between chapters there is a podcast-like talk between david goggins and his writer. He also gives challenges for the readers to do. The material in the beginning of the book is a bit heavy at first, and will definitely have you in your feels.
whos jimmy
isn't Jim the guy in the Office ?
November 9 by Colleen Hoover. All the books of her actually 😂
Yeah. Colleen Hoover books are great, if you want an easy read. They are mostly romantic❤️
sure
Khaled Hosseini's books!!! Start with The Kite Runner 💗
Lol not sure if u guys were being serious but Jimmy is probably James' nickname
The Kite Runner was well written but sad 😦
@steep coyote try the idiot by dostoevsky, if not, betting on the muse by bukowski
has anyone read either of these series? folk of the air, an ember in the ashes (did you like it? and if you've read both, which did you like better?)
First one
They are fiction book?
yeah, high fantasy
I started the latter, the writing style is already really captivating
Aye I love Khalid Hosseini
A Thousand Splendid Suns did you read it?
oo i see , i will add my book list , thx
did you read verity?
YEEEEEEEEEEES
it was so good i read it in a day
you should add SU ADAMI to your list
it's incredible, me too, like in 6 h
my face all book
that’s the only book i read by her, do you have any other recs?
about her?
by colleen hoover sry lol
I can make a list in order from the one I like the most to the least, I have read all her books
if anyone needs a book recommendation this is your list
colleen hoover:
- november 9
- it ends with us
- all your perfects
- layla
- verity
- regretting you
- confess
- ugly love
- maybe someday (3)
- hopeless (3)
- heart bones
- too late
- never never (3)
- slammed (3)
- without merit
this order is from my point of view
Thanks pottah
Read The Folk of the Air series, although not the other series. I would recommend it. It was a light read compared to the likes of other fairy fiction writers. The whole series gives off a really spring time, cottagecore aesthetic feeling if you are into that.🧚♀️ 🌸 📖
oooh that sounds nice, I'd heard that it's a lil dark as well
Yeah😂 but only slightly. I enjoyed the dark element to the book, made it soooo interesting and gripping.
yeah definitely
Jimmy is short for James
Or another form of it rather
thanks!!!
hey
Anyone have book recs for writing nonfiction?
mad libs
for writing? On Writing Well - by William Zinsser
The War of Art - by Steven Pressfield
I didnt read them but know how well written they are
@bronze fractal
Can someone recommend me a book that explains how to grow your mindset.
Have you read the book "The power of now"? I heard it's good. I'm just reading "atomic habits" and it's very easy to read as well. "Deep work" should be good too
Got plushie and alchemist.! 🤩❤️
"Atomic Habits" was a good one.
And anther that I liked was "Discipline Equals Freedom: Field Manual" by Jocko Willink. But this is more about how to toughen up mentally in order to chase your goals (very much the same idea as David Goggins' book).
The Alchemist is a wonderful read!
thanks
thank you too
The subtle art of not giving a f*ck is an amazing read.
what exactly is it about?
The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is a book that challenges the conventions of self-help by inviting the reader to NOT try, say no often and embrace negative thinking.
does it help tho? in not giving a f*ck?
It's an extremely fresh read unlike the regular self-help book where they only speak about being positive everytime, wake morning, read more etc.
Give it a read. It is worth the time.
okay i def will..just got a few exams coming.but after that definitely
i've actually bought it yesterday and am going to read it today. heard so many people saying it's a great book
It also has a part 2, though I have not given that a read.
I want the shining book so bad, but the price doesn't drop. 😭
part 2!!! I didn't know
diffenetly going to look that up
read this. Especially 5 AM club first. Then read the marked ones.
Ooo well done !

neden ben gelince kimse konuşmuyorr
I think The Alchemist
i agree
If you're okay with a web novel, The Second Coming of Gluttony was pretty life-changing for me. The main character's overcoming of his gambling addiction showed me that it's not too late to get my life back on track.
Clearly not
well i'm french so i read it in french without too many difficulties hahaha
Started reading Cant Hurt Me today, stopped at p60, I always got inspired by goggins, listened to him in podcasts and speeches and I always knew he was a spartan and warrior just didn't knew how hellish his life really was, looking forward to continue reading tomorrow, very powerful book
its really good, i would recommend it as well.
the first bit with his dad is a bit shocking
it sounded illegal in so many ways
i just finished it last week, i actually didn't get it first, now i think about it everyday.
has anyone read alan watts? i like watching his lectures to ease in to sleep. im thinking of getting his book
I recommend the audiobook for can't hurt me if you guys ever get the chance. It's done in a pretty unique format
he speaks between chapters and gives lots of extra insight into his thought process at the time
are there any good websites to get free books?
yes
cool thanks
just type book name followed by free pdf
the website Project Gutenberg has a large database of free books that are registered in the public domain
And like someone already said, typing the name of the book followed by PDF in the search bar will usually turn up good results
I read the alchemist, but would like another reader's insight on the book. What values did you gain and how exactly did the book change your way of thinking?
lmao guys quick discussion
harry potter> or < percy jackson
imo Jackson
Yes. It was depressing as hell. I even watched the movie
percy jackson >>
i'd have to agree ^
the alchemist - paulo coelho. one the bests books i ever read
any recom. for time management like 4 hours a day ?? or so ??
What is this about
it is a sheepherd that is searching for a treasure, but the way that it happens is aweasome
Book recommendations? James suggests "atomic habits" and "deep work". I think they are both really really good
kk thanks for suggestion .. i will look into it
Has anybody here read "leonardo da vinci" by walter isaacson? seems to me like a cool book for creative thinking and curiosity, was thinking of buying it
hey, anyone reads books written by Carlos Ruiz Zafón?
i read one, 'Marina', I loved
Did you liked the end?, I mean I like his books but the end of some are disappointing, a bit.
I don't remember much about the ending, about 5 years ago I read it for class, but I don't usually like books with bad endings and I loved this book, I recommend it, although I don't remember well how it ends
I want toooo
Also an authentic opinion, self help is mostly trash. If the author doesn't preach what he teaches don't follow. Most of the times they just do some 30 days or 6 months experiment and site some research backing their words, book over. Instead use that energy to read fiction, ancient wisdom, etc.
percy jackson
What're some good ideas to write a book about
Have you read anything from Russian classics like Dostoevsky or Gogol?
i read dostoevsky
Notes from the underground is a pretty good read
i want to get back into reading and want to read one of agatha christies books
any recs to start with??
i read that one!! its such a good read man
I just started "I The Supreme" by Augusto Roa Bastos
I probably won't have time to read it anytime soon because I have college aps and AP exams coming up but damn its cool
i read about 6 pages so far and I am very intrigued by iut
its a realistic fiction/historical fiction about a latin american (in Paraguay i think) dictator who has been in power for 50 years and is wildly paranoid and has swings between multiple personalities
its cool af
"Flow" by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. It is somewhat of a self-improvement book that is written by a scientist that researched "optimal experience" for 25 years. A quote from page 3 Yet we have all experienced times when, instead of being buffeted by anonymous forces, we do feel in control of our actions, masters of our own fate. On the rare occasions that it happens, we feel a sense of exhilaration, a deep sense of enjoyment that is long cherished and that becomes a landmark in memory for what life should be like.
it caught my eye at a half price books so i bought it on a whim :P i have too many books already
ooh i've experienced this a few times
i can't really remember the specifics but i remember the feeling that is described here
To those who read "No longer human" by Osamu Dazai, what scene stood out to you?
Flow is something that happens when you have a direction for the future but you are focused on the present time rather than the goal.
If you want to find out I highly recommend the book
Life changer
is "station eleven" worth reading?
Books aren't for everyone, especially in this day and age. But I think you are severely limiting your world view by only taking a 1300 year old holy book's words as serious.
That's an admirable aim but think on this: the Quran says in order to entire Jannah one must face many trials and meet many conditions. I think having a wide world view will definitely be of help in that. Also, Muslim scholars were and are universally considered to be very well read. If you live your life by the book, maybe you should follow the examples set by those who have come before you?
Then maybe, you should give some books a try. Remember, many great Muslims, including Muhammad PBUH, were well known for creating large libaries with many different types of books.
Hey there, Anyone who can help me guide how can I have a good sleeping habit at night. My biological clock kinda got really distured. I sleeps at day and stay awake at night. This is disturbing my studies and I am kinda wasting alot of time this way. DMs are welcome. Kindly help me by guiding or suggesting something. Thanks
exercise to get you tired
It was good, but imo it didn’t live up to its potential
Talked too much about an uninteresting pre-apocalypse storyline when it had a very cool post apocalyptic world that could have explored way more
Also it’s about a virus that caused the end of the world so it’s a little difficult to read right in the middle of a panorama 😳
get into bed earlier and stay off any electronics. try to read to fall asleep too.
yall read diary of a wimpy kid ?>
ofc
a classic
It looks like I have to pull an all-nighter today
any tips on what to do afterwards to recover?
(or tips on staying awake during the all-nighter)
ooft good luck
caffeine and light food is the way!
mostly just to stay hydrated throughout the night and to pace yourself well. In the morning, just do your regular routine if you have one (especially washing your face, I find that helps me feel more awake or..more crisp????) and to do some movement. This could be like stretching or yoga or just gently tapping all the muscles on your body, it's rly nice, like a massage
oh yes light food is also a good one!
same here, washing my face usually wakes me up
thank youuu for the tips :))
np! Rest up afterwards too!!
truly, for a month I had to pull multiple all-nighters (had no choice) and I had a bucket of caffeine drinks and coffee. It worked but adrenaline was real. Adding light food and reducing caffeine worked great for me.
like soup, and instant stuff. my favorites were corn soup with high protein and also Indian style upma & poha
basically shouldn't fill you up
ohhh okok ty
Umm, what is this channel exactly for?
i haven't seen a conversation about books here

Hot drink or soup to calm yourself down and soothe your mind! 😄 it also helps you to stay awake and energised
I also like fruit! Fruit is good. tea every once in a while is also really good. You still get a tiny bit of caffeine there but if you don't drink a lot (more than 2 bags worth) then you should be fine. I like to use loose leaf and then just replenish with hot water when it's running low, that way I don't get more caffeine but the taste is still there, just weak.
Just scroll up a tad, lots of book talk there :))
I see, thanks for the answer :)
ouuu thankyou :>> I only drink coffee in the mornings and I should try out tea - hot beverages make me feel tired so perhaps I can make it iced :> ty!
Yeah me too. I usually end up making tea with lukewarm water 😅
has anyone read or used james stuart calculus? If so, did you enjoy it?
Okay
Okay
hi ladys

what do you guys think of living authentically
if you live authentically are the choices you make "correct"?
this is so confusing i don't understand ethnicity and authenticity
not ethnicity
whoop ethics? whats the word again
idk bro
its ethics
idk but the choices that you know you will regret the least are the correct ones, thats what i live by
thats a good way of putting it
hello are you talking about books ?
James what school do you attend?
i think you can demarcate the two as such: ethics is basically a definition of what is right and what is wrong (it's mostly decided by the system) but authenticity on the other hand is staying true to your values and it's closely associated with integrity, to always honor your morals
Authenticity means; genuine, honest to self. Philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre has an interesting story about that, search "jean-paul sartre advice to a student". In sartre's opinion thats right, as long as you choose authentically than you make the correct choice. I also somewhat agree with that statement, all my regrets comes from non-honest decisions that is motivated by the values that I don't understand and pushed on me by other people(like money. even though I understand the value of a money now, the best way to understand the value of something is doing honest mistakes.). I wouldn't say you will be always in correct but if you are authentic I can almost guarantee that you will start to understand what it means to learning from mistakes(in a way doing mistakes is correct action because humans can't learn much without making mistakes that is a part of existentialist philosophy so Sartre might be right.)

try brandon sanderson Elantris
In physicist Stephen Hawking's brilliant opus, A Brief History of Time, he presented us with a bold new look at our universe, how it began, and how our old views of physics and tired theories about the creation of the universe were no longer relevant. In other words, Hawking gave us a new look at our world, our universe, and ourselves. Now, avai...
is there any common book that is being read among all of you
i.e. in this BOOK CLUB
manga
skubidibip
haha gucci
want to start getting into reading, ive been reluctant to read books for most of my life but i want to start now. Any suggestions?
what genre are you most intrigued to read
maybe fantasy, or some non-fiction
planning on reading those 3 books that james recommended, those types of books also seem interesting
i've read "paper towns" by john green.
it's good
there's a movie on it too
but i would read the book before watching the movie
oh nvm, it's not fantasy
Usually good books are something that you have to discover through reading.
I would recommend books such as "Martin eden" by Jack London or "Crime and Punishment" by Dostoevsky both books are really universal.
Don't get overwhelmed it is a journey of discovery
i heard mistborn by brandon sanderson was really good!!
already overwhelmed
haha :D
thanks for the suggestions guys
yw!! i hope you enjoy the recs
how to read a book
well the first step is to be born, then knowing how to read, then buy a book, and then open the book at the first page (sometimes 2de), then read the first word, then the 2de and then word by word it will become a sentence and then you're gonna read a hole page so you're gonna read the page after that you're gonna need to turn the page so you can find other words that you can read. yeah that's kinda it
thank you!
Sorry for the late reply but the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson will change your life
Pre-suasion is a good book
One of my favorite books is The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke, it's not really fantasical but it is non-fiction and has a really nice story behind it. It's not philosophical or anything life changing but I think that it's a wonderful book to read if you want to get into it. I was hooked on this book and had to get myself a copy after borrowing it from the library so many times 🙂 If you check it out, I hope you like it
there's more than one cover but this is my favorite and the one I have
im going on a road trip and i cant decide what genre to read someone decide for me
history
Unpopular opinion, but horror genre is the best. Stephen King's books or Asylum series is good.
Otherwise something more passive like Wuthering Heights or All the Light we cannot see is also a good read.
And if you want to read some positive stuff,The kiterunner or A Man called Ove is the best for this genre.
thank you!!
House of Leaves is the best psych horror novel I've ever read
So I'm a junior in high school and I never read any books. But I wan't to start reading books because I have so much free time now. Is there any good books that will get be addicted to reading?
Did you read harry potter?
Nope I have not read any books
it depends on your interests too
are you a sentimental guy? do you enjoy love stories and domestic settings?
or maybe you find horror and thriller stories more appeling?
then, i would suggest you some works of the english gotic novel, such as "The Monk - Lewis", "Frankenstein - Mary Shelley", "Vathek", "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", "The castle of otranto"
Did anybody read the seven deaths of evelyn hardcastle?
The Kite Runner is good
Yeah
I am reading that rn(crime and punishment)
Along side Hunback of Notre Damn
I liked Ninety-Three a lot by Victor Hugo and my favorite romanticist novel is easily We The Living.
Grammar?
I have a decent amount on writing, grammar, and communication.
yes both grammar and vocabulary
If you know a few books, would you recommend
I'd learn vocab naturally by speaking and looking up words you don't know. But on grammar I'll link you a course in dms.
Yes. This one. Word power made easy.
you can try reading a book you already read in your native language so you know what's happening and can learn how english is structured and guess some vocabulary
heeey, could you recommend a major English book like 1984 by George Orwell, please?
catcher in the rye by JD Salinger
Really
i also liked all the names
brave new world by aldous huxley
maybe fahrenheit 451
Atlas Shrugged
That book was good.
I know it 👨🚒👨🚒👨🚒
anyone knows julio cortazar?
i honestly dont know any of the books you guys are talking about😀
like you never read them or never heard about them ?
i never heard about them
Do you not read literture much?
thank you ! Going to buy fahrenheit !!
All those books are pretty popular in America at least.
oh well i am not from America thats going to be the reason
Oh, ok
but i can check them out for sure
That makes sense why you aren't familiar
Who do you read?
where are you from ?
i like books from Božena Němcová she is like the most famous in Czech Republic
or Josef Čapek
k
well theres a lot of Czech writers that i like
what type of book do you usually read ?
well i dont know but i love history books those czech writers i told you about we read those only at school
Oh, like historical fiction or just history?
Oh, ok
I read a lot of different books. Mostly philosophy and literature.
cool
Just got it today at target 👍
well i love this book (and film) called Lidice its about a Czech village that was well depopulated (extermination) by the germans after assassination on Heydrich
oooh have you start reading it yet ? i wanna read it but i'm not sure
nice
sadly, i've never heard of it, but i know those type of books, like we have those too here (i'm french)
there's one that tells the story of a city called oradoure-sur-glane (very french name, anyway), where the nazis brought together all the citizens of the city and put them into the church and set fire to the church, can't remember the name though
well it is interesting and even terrible to know about Lidice it is like a horor i can say for those poor people who lived there during WW2
well never heard of it WHAT i heard about and i know about is what happened in Dunkerk
yeah this is a really sad story, i always feel bad when passing by this town
I'm curious to know if this book actually works or it's a meme.
@lament thistle any book works if you move your butt to apply it
and yes, Atomic Habits is pretty good, I've read 41% of it and I'm liking a lot. The extra material is also pretty helpful to apply the concepts.
Thats not true. There is a ton of bad advice out there which leads to frustration.
But in a general sense yes it comes down to you to act.
Books with bad advice do exist, but that's why there's reviews for you to check
The book itself, Atomic Habits, talks about this
“Any book works”
you know what I meant
You made a mistake in your writing so I am clarifying. When you write you shouldn’t be satisfied with anything less than a full communication of your idea/ideas. Its not a big deal.
%41?
Ohh ı see
reading paperback version is better than pdf
pdf isn't it illegal?
i mean the book itself
Depends on the copyright protections a lot are against distribution so yes it can be.
by buying the physical book u support the writer
ty for having that username
i keep forgetting i gotta read kafka. people keep telling me to
I have heard he's good. My favorite author liked him too.

Ok thanks I'll check it
@still crescent ^
Anyone have a pdf of mein kampf
11/22/63 good book
oh the edge!

anyone who need some book pm me, ill try to find it and send
i'm currently reading "Преступление и наказаниe" (crime and punishment) by Fyodor Dostoevsky for my literature class and i highly recommend reading this even if you don't have to do it for school, don't want to write any spoilers, but trust me, you won't regret it
i want to read that so bad, but first i want to read other of his novels, like white nights, the double, etc, so i can enjoy more crime and punishment
If your major isn't related to literature don't do this
It is exhausting
and you will still understand what is going on in crime and punishment just fine.
nah imma do it
Good luck with that :D
some people like reading for fun! i also did this for a looong time, but when i got older i quited, only because i went to a med school
I know I was doing it too
But then I realized there are so many good books to just fit in my lifetime
and It is exhausting to read every single novels of one author
For example I wanted to read dead souls by Nikolai Gogol but I had the same mind and just tried to read every book he wrote before reading dead souls and the writing style of the Gogol got kinda boring and didn't read dead souls because I was bored of the author
My general advice is read the best books from the best authors if you aren't literature main (If you can't read 4+ hours a day)
But I heard this advice also in my time and didn't listen it too
I guess it is an experience that one should go through to understand
It was the first Dostoevsky I read and I rlly enjoyed it, I've gone back since and read almost all of his and it's definitely better to start with the one you know you want to read
Background history of the author from Wikipedia is honestly enough for context if your edition has decent notes
too late
I've already bought other 3 books
however, I'm not gonna read all of them immediately. I got other books that are waiting for me
worth it
They're all good imo so win-win either way ig ahah
Which ones did u get
should i wait to learn russian to read dostoïevsky
you don't have to, there is a pdf in english for crime and punishment, but some of the characters have russian names
but I usually prefer reading in the og language, so that nothing of the literature style is lost
Just hard if ur a non-native :/
yeah :/
Why do you need to read the other novels before crime and punishment?
I don’t think the order matters
not feeling ready
Its not a hard book I am reading through it rn ?
im feeling the same with karamazov brothers
You are whats stopping you?
I know but I am asking why. Lol
Its kind of weird that you do it in an order. When its doesn’t need to be read in sequence.
Do you just like reading an author’s works in order?
unfortunately Dostoevsky lived in 19th century, so it might be kind of hard to learn russian on this level so you can fully understand everything:(
Yes that’s what I thought as well, still I wanted an input from other fellow readers
People can translate Ancient Greek with enough effort he can do it lol
but you can also learn russian just for fun! their alphabet is not that hard, but if you don't speak any of slavic languages the pronunciation might be kind of hard
yeah i know, but keep that in mind, that you have to spend like at least 3 years learning a certain language to translate anciet greek without any effort, i don't think that anyone would spend 3 years learning just to read one book
But it’s not only one book tho, I’m rlly interested in Russian literature
No one really learns a language for one book. I am sure he is interested in it for other reasons too.
☝️
okay, so go for it
lmao connection
No but I get your point
You should read We The Living. Its written by a Russian immigrant and people have said its written similarly to Dostoyévskiy
take it with a grain of salt if thats not you
Thank you!
I would suggest that if your main study is not literature don't bother with the perfect outcome
reading it in english without the order is already %90 of the experience don't spent like a year for the %10
being a perfectionist might be fine for your profession but for hobbies that would exhaust you a lot
I have been there
Though its more similar to Victor Hugo. I’ll dm you a pdf in a bit.
scifi: Solaris by Stanislav Lem
Russian is pretty difficult to learn, especially if you want to read Dostoevsky. As a Russian native I wouldnt necessarily recommend it. Youd lose more im translating yourself than in the actual english translation.
It seems to me like he was already planning on learning Russian. Though I don’t think too much is lost in translation. Its not like philosophy in which small translation errors are detrimental to the integrity of the work.
I just meant that Russian grammar is pretty complex, and meaning can be lost unless you have a good grip on it.
Oh, ok
I have a pdf of Critique of Pure Reason which is worse
i will read that later
Ызс и жан воуч фор тпищ
Highly recommend, to anyone. Really gives you a perspective into intensive care medicine. The way the doctor explains it is fantastic.
there are some really good translations of dostoevsky's books out there
Hello everyone. I was wondering if anyone here has the pdf/eBook/whatever doc i can read of "Atomic Habits" and "deep work" but in spanish. Im studying english for the past few months but it aint that goof yet. Or i dunno if any of you guys know a website or something i can get books from in different languages. You can also find several books here :
https://cutt.ly/1bxI1mk
Is it le German version?
This is a late response but this is like someone who doesn’t speak English asking if they should learn English to read Shakespeare, meaning that Dostoevsky in Russian has many nuances that could only be understood with deep study of the language. Respect for the consideration but you can enjoy his works and their meaning in English, and then if you really want you could learn Russian, but to read them in Russian while learning it will be really grueling and will take a lot of time.
But hey if you decide to learn the language it could be a good goal to set.
Thanks dude
Fluent single and first language English speakers find Shakespeare difficult too
It’s a good read tho but you have to stop to try and interpret from time to time. It’s like Germans trying to speak old German creoles.
@gleaming juniper I want atomic habits in english
Thanks A LOT!!!...A LOT..may God bless u
Everyone pick up "Writing and Thinking" by Forester Steadman. Its out of print but it is absolutely invigorating to any interest in writing and thinking one may have. I haven't been very excited about writing most my life. But this book hammers in the importance of writing as an expression of thought.
gimme some juicy websites to look for books online please. Free books, like an archive of sorts.
Hey
I made an Anki deck cards with Self help books
https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1881966579
Currently there's only 10 cards as I am only going through the books. This deck will keep getting updated.
For now only Atomic Habits 1st chapter are there
hope someone finds it useful
I HOPE Y'ALL LIKE IT
Please do let me know what you think about it
Human action by Mises. Gutenberg should have it
Does anyone have the pdf of atomic habits
Yeah I can send it if you want.
@fair ermine Thankss!!
Does anyone have a pdf for maths integers
@obtuse vine What do you mean pdf for integers? Like to help you learn them and study? What grade/year are you in? I could maybe look through my old books and send you some exercises is you wish.
Thanx a lot
I already got the pdf but thanks for replying
You got some notable ones?
I understand your point. For more basic books, I don't really care for the original language, but Dostoevsky is such a work of art that it feels like a crime to read it in English. It makes me want to understand every little nuance, and to know that was is written is fully what the author meant.
damn even russians cannot fully understand dostoevsky haha
Yeah I know that haha
Better to read them sooner in English than not at all though. It will take years of Russian study to prepare to truly read and understand one of his books.
Still a ton of insight from English translations, why not read them in a language you already know instead of putting them off to master a language (potentially not getting to them). It's not at all a crime to read them in English and it's not like you can't read them again later.
Also Pushkin is a classic, Chekhov's short stories are also really good and insightful but may be a bit more difficult
but they are short stories so they are easier to delve into if you are learning Russian
"The Hot Zone: A Terrifying True Story" is a really good book about the ebola virus for anyone interested in its origins/early discovery.
sad but true
I don't know how Anki is used, but from what there is, I find it interesting to be able to highlight things from a book by topics for those who need it, I think it's a good idea
@obtuse vine also khan academy
I hope that the proposal of the book club will be accepted, there can come up many ideas like this.
You’re too sweet ma’am
I bet she is😂😂
HAHAHAHAH thank youuuuuuu
Say thanks to our indian friend 'mam'
I just think that the effort of the people has to be rewarded, I have ideas from the book club proposal of @knotty tide that can be interesting, and yours can also be another, it is a way of sharing with people, so why not. Thank youuuuuuuuuuu
I believe they can delegate roles of different interests to other people

I would like to propose a Book Club.
-> Dedicated Voice Channel for book club.
-> We will create a schedule where one person can read a book and the rest will hear it. And vice versa forming a cycle.
-> Taking a weekly/monthly survey as to the timings, preferred books, genres and customize reading books based on that.
-> We will have flexible schedule where-in it fits for all time zones.
-> Cover all types of genres of book.
-> Have weekly/monthly/quarterly sessions where-in all can keep a check as to what others are reading and can recommend.
-> Another special addition by me is a 'Month of the book', where a book is selected for that particular month, every person reads that book for the whole month based on a small survey or recommendations or voting.
-> And much more to come .......
If you have any suggestions, kindly include them in the google form link given below.
This form is for those who are interested in the Book Club initiative. This is to understand your preferences so we can structure the program better.
NOTE : Survey will be closed Saturday i.e. Today.
Link :- https://forms.gle/zniFRRNqM8gXGeQy5 [Username field : Yourname#tag e.g Skullcrusher#1867]
Will the month of the book have a pdf version everyone can read?
Yes. Everyone will have a pdf copy which will be sent here.
Great! Thanks :)_ _
how to get a speaker permission?
It is currently disabled and not assigned to anyone.
Within each Stage channel, a member can be a Stage moderator, a Speaker, or listen from the audience. The channel was made in accordance with the above survey of forming up a book club. None of the roles are assigned yet.
You can read on stage channels here : https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/1500005513722-Stage-Channels-FAQ

🔵 reading books (novels, poetry, literature ...)
oh crap my bad
Did you guys read Atomic Habits in the Book Club?
The book club (https://discordapp.com/channels/716801153991442442/717771903825215590/839082472615706624) has not started yet, but I think many here have read it or are doing it
I'm so excited to finally read it! My last final is today. It's been sitting on my nightstand waiting for the semester to end to be read. ✨
This idea is just brilliant

a lot of the principles in atomic habits are worth remembering
so that wouldn't even be that much of a bad idea
@gleaming juniper
In an ankifying context the books worth ankifying is self help books
Awesome
do you want link?
sheeesh bookclub
yeah, I think it too, can be a part of the book club. @gleaming juniper have you put it in the suggestions of the google form?
**I don't know if anyone suggest this idea, if someone did it, tell me, sorry **
I read a writing of someone, and I think that maybe there are people who write, and not only read. So I think for book club can be a good idea that people share their writings, words and we can transmit what we think about it. It can be special days a month/week or just whoever wants to share it whenever they want (is in case someone does not dare to share)
I already wrote a suggestion for the book club, I don't know if I can write again in the google form @knotty tide
Sorry, im late to the book club! is there a book that everyone's reading?
The survey gets closed on upcoming Saturday/Sunday. After which the club will start. I am just waiting on everyone to respond considering different timezones. So far, we have received 25 responses.
ok thank you, how do i access the survey??
This one #book-recommendations message
awesome @knotty tide just filled it out
hyped for the club!
Idk if this is mentioned but it would be cool to record the readers for listeners who couldn't make it. Its like free audible lol
but obviously amateurs trying to read etc.. i dont see why it shouldn't be
Only if the reader agree's tho
of course
it's a very good idea
Hi guys
Hi guys
Hi guys
according to goodreads, 798
Is there any iit aspirant
nope
NDA
I'm thinking of starting my own channel
My friends can't study
I can't sit idly by and watch them shoot themselves in the ass
But the paradox is
I don't want to copy James
Reviews on Deep Work by Cal Newport?
oh no
?
the ping
So?
Alright
on goodreads, you can go to goodreads, then you look for the book and people put opinions on it
Thank you!
Just saw your message. If you type study on YouTube, there are plenty of channels doing 10hrs pomodoro on live. It won't be copying. If you want to do it, then do it.
I will then
Has anyone read a book by Teal Swan?
has anyone read uncle toms cabin
do you guys know any books about serial killers? i'm going to end reading crime and punishment really soon and have nothing to read after this, i'll take also any other topic's recommendations, just looking for something that was written after 15th century, so words aren't complicated at all
I haven't read this book, but it's on my tbr shelf it's called "Thirteen" by Stephen Mearns and the tagline is 'The Serial Killer Isn't on Trial. He's on the Jury', you can check out the reviews on goodreads tho
and also the ABC murders by Agatha Christie is another mystery involving a serial killer
The Jeaffry Deaver work is really good, the Lincoln Rhyme series (the character of the book) is one of my favourite in general
Bone Collector is the first of the series
Well there is a book called the woman in the window by A.J.Finn its a psychological thriller and i really enjoyed it
It isnt really a seriel killer book but i hope you read it:0
