Anyone here read Secret History by Donna Tart?
I need some motivation to get out of a reading slump
Read something short, mate. works like a charm for me
yep, it’s one of my fav pieces of fiction thus far. I loved the prose and build up to the climax
Def a slow burn type of book (it’s also a longer read than your average novel) but if you enjoy her style of writing then you’ll have no trouble getting through it
If you want to get out of a slump then maybe short stories since it is a longer book. But give it a go anyway if it sounds interesting to you
if you just want to get back into the rhythm i'd reread a book that you really like, maybe a short one, and just aim for an easy target like 3 to 5 pages everyday.
chances are you'll read way more than that anyway but you'll feel good about reading again
Highly recommend The Life of a Stupid Man by Ryunosuke Akutagawa. It's what interested me in Japanese Literature. It's also short.
Currently reading
The stranger by Albert camus
The secret history by Donna tartt
should I like continue "The secret history" im around page 111 or 114 i dont remember but its getting boring and on the other had the narrater just straight away said who died like WHYY

I heard Everyman's Library has best translations for Dostoevsky...... Has anyone read them?
Hey guys, I’m trying to get back into reading again. I used to read quite a bit before COVID but lost the habit over time.
Could you suggest some beginner-friendly classic books that are engaging and easy to get into?
Would really appreciate your recommendations. Thanks!
A little life /j
Lol
What genre do you usually read?
last genre i read was crime & friction
Chetan bhagat's One Arranged Murder
easy one time read and beginner friendly
Just to get back into it, grab anything from Agatha Christie maybe.
No country for old men by McCarthy
has anyone read The Count of Monte Cristo? is it really that good?
it's pretty nice/ catchy yes; but bare in mind it is pretty long too
Yep read it in November, although its like 1300 pages long but it's very easy to read and get hooked on to
Fantastic story and book
I've seen/read lots of reviews on it, and they're always good! I'm really considering buying it. thank you!
Yeah go for it definitely worth it
The feynman lectures on physics
has anyone read the summa theologica (any part of it)? ive heard aquinas and the summa theologica has shaped a lot of modern western thought, so i am interested. but also... the size of the work is ridiculous
Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka...I don't even read classics and it's the best book I've read this year, very insightful, makes u think.
can anyone give like a crazzzyyyyy murder mystery suggestion
and then there were none by agatha christie
ahemm its fake
i have 10k on it
before redeeming i have to put my money Gng
So, I think its not legit.
read both, idk why but for me it works
i see what you did there
I mean, I was just being honest.
Actually I'm not great at reading classics, I give up after 5 pages, but this was a page turner.
You have any recommendations?
I do not see what they did there
try to read it in German, if you read it in English. I read both versions, the German one is definitely better.
Idk german😭😭😭
that's really unfortunate. Because the language in German version is better.
nah just kidding coz nowadays everyone recommend that book only, good book tho I've read as well
Hii peeps, does anyone know any good books on productivity and focus that might be useful for someone with adhd?
Yeah probably cause its an easy read too.
There was this book anti-planner....it had some interesting ideas. U might want to check it out...I'm not sure if it is for dealing with adhd tho
okkkay
book: pride and prejudice by jane austen
(it's also available for free on project gutenberg!)
I really liked the Einstein for dummies book.
The Forever Hero Trilogy by L.E. Modesitt (First book, dawn for a distant earth)
The Time Machine by HG Wells,
Armor by John Steakley (futuristic soldier in a war),
Old Man's War series by John Scalzi (this one gets very sci-fi),
Pathfinder series by Orson Scott Card (not purely sci-fi, but it has a lot of sci-fi concepts)
Has anyone read Normal People by Sally Rooney?
yes
although it's been a while since i read it
Yes I didnt like it

haha i didn't like it either
yes! i really liked it to be honest. but i do prefer Intermezzo
<@&942391219206647828>
Thanku
@unborn geyser @regal geyser
Why didn't you like it?
(Asking cause I was planning to buy it)
sally rooneys style of writing is first of all really difficult to read. you cant tell whether the characters are thinking or speaking etc, although shes very poetic when writing so thats a plus point i guess? but she also has some terrible moments with writing.
plot wise the time skips are very confusing, theres no actual conclusion to the storyline, the characters relationship is toxic and leads absolutely nowhere (i hate cornell hes insufferable), the female leads background wasnt explored at all when there was so much potential, theres way too much s3x where its not even required, its hella disorganised, the background characters arent explored. most of them stand as shells of people rather than showcasing themselves as characters with depth, the characters literally show no growth at all.. i could go on and on
Oh is it so...then yeah I guess I should just watch the series then lmao
does anyone have any architecture or urban planning book recs
Anyone have manga recs similar to Death Note?
tokyo ghoul ig?
Monster
Code Geass

Anyone have chill book recommendations? I’ve been reading very emotionally heavy books lately and want a break. No romance. I’m thinking fantasy, classics or East Asian literature. Please ensure that it is under 150 pages.
Days at the morisaki bookshop
We'll prescribe you a cat
Will check. Thanks.
Nevermind, it’s romance. I’ll pass.
One Hundred Years of Solitude
Thank you.
omg
read DUNE
No
why
Bruh
The Riddlemaster Trilogy by Patricia McKillip is very good. I would not call it emotionally heavy, actually id say its a pretty beautiful series, haven't read anything else quite like it. Though im not sure id call it super chill, as there is a lot going on.
I see, I'll check it out. Thanks.
suggest me some fictional books rom com pleaseeee will read again after ages I want my mind blownn
7 husbands of evelyn hugo
Let me checkk
its not really romcom its more so drama with hints of romance
the whole premise is amazing though
ohkayy
Heard Pho Love Story is good. Never read it though.
Guys, how is Dune? Would you recommend it as a first fictional book to someone?
Its interesting but I think it would be a hard first read
It's not my first book itself though.
Well.. for a first time fictional book dune is a bit intense and confusing, and weird in some parts. The beginning is really strong though.
For me, Harry Potter was my first fictional book series, then Time Machine by HG Wells, and I think I read Lord of the Rings, the redwall series and Frankenstein after that. I've been enjoying reading ever since.
I've read Murder on the Orient Express as my first and the only fictional book yet.

Mate you're sending this in the wrong channel
Sorry I was so occupied with work didn’t even notice
book: what you are looking for is in the library by michiko aoyama
Hello everyone, does anyone know of a book that is like the no longer human
Have you read diary of an oxygen thief?
I found it kind of funny lol
No, I haven't read it yet. It's like no longer human?
I think so. The main character is the bad guy, but its more comedic. Like youre having a conversation with the main character.
does anyone have the pdf of kafka on the shore?
recommend life for sale by yukio mishima. atmosphere-wise, parts of it also reminded me of norwegian wood definitely worth a read too
i dmed u
i wanna get into reading, but these self help books bore me
Read some good fiction
I remember buying like 5 self help books when I started to get into reading and barely managed to read one of em
i’d recommend fiction too
most self help books are boring and repetitive, and at least to me, they’re usually common sense
DM me
Dm me
I'm eating lunch
You don't know that
yeah but could you recommend afew that you like
exactly, so could you recommend some of the fictional books that youve enjoyed reading
I haven't read many but the ones I thought that were easy to read and good reads are
Kafka on the Shore
Catcher in the Rye
Project Hail Mary
The Count of Monte Cristo( this one is pretty long)
I'm sure someone will have better recommendations but I think these are pretty good
i don’t think my personal favourites would be appropriate, given that you’re only getting into reading. the person above me has given some popular recommendations i’ve heard about though, so i’d just look into those
if you want to get into reading fiction, then just look for something in a genre that you think you would like. preferably something short and with an easy reading level. that can make it more doable to finish a book, which would hopefully give you a nice feeling of accomplishment and encourage you to read more
Yeah I have given the ones that I felt were popular and easier to read and good for getting into stuff....
halo everyone, im trying to get into the reading hobby and have no idea which book to start with. Looking for a book that's fun and exciting to read, maybe like mystery or horror. Overall just a good book that will get me hooked into reading. Thank you guys :)
Kafka on the shore was one of the very first books I read would definitely recommend it
It definitely has some mystery elements to it
Hello everyone I am reading finnegans wake, it is so hard to make sense of the phrases there, perhaps I can find someone who is also as interested as me in the resource 🙂
Love you all lots
Heyyy 😉 if you want something fun, exciting, and super addictive I highly recommend some of my all-time favorites that got me HOOKED:
• Look Closer – David Ellis → absolutely insane plot twists, short chapters, fast-paced, and genuinely one of the craziest books I’ve read
• Never Lie – Freida McFadden*→ my go-to recommendation for new readers, super easy to read, insanely addictive, and the plot twist is WILD (easy one-day read)
• The Naturals series – Jennifer Lynn Barnes→ YA mystery but sooo good, very Criminal Minds vibes with profiling, secrets, and criminals
• The Inmate – Freida McFadden*→ another fast, twisty thriller that keeps you questioning everything
Hope one of these pulls you into the reading addiction hhhh 😊
That looks like a fucking scam
They just write rlly weird
Chat with me about my fav science books recs if you’re new to reading about science!
My fellow science reads bookworms might come for me because I’m shying away from the more dense science books & even threw some fiction in there to help make the jump to nonfiction a bit more palatable 🤗

What are u talking about??
Some guy yesterday posted about crypto wallets and shit and if you sign up with a promo code you will get free money
Ohh did he delete the message? 😭
I might have overreacted about that, sorry about that
Either him or mods
Not at all I was just wonderingggg 😉
But that is very brave of him to attempt to post that lmao
Yeah
He posted that on 2 channels
Non-main ones
Probably to not get caught but well, its pretty shitty to even do that
Man.. need a link to download epub for atomic habits on my xteink that doesn’t suck. I’ve used the epub on archive.or-, i’ve tried editing the book on my calibre, i’ve even given each page to AI to clean up some text, but I still often find pages that don’t display well
i could just buy it for $12.99… but trying to find an unofficial pleasant look way to do it
annas archive is the best
use proxy sites if it doesnt work in ur country
My go-to website for any epub or pdf books is Oceanpdf
@dawn flame @glossy portal thanks so much!
Frankenstein is a pretty wild one to read. I liked it a lot. Both a horror and mystery story.
What hooked me into reading were Harry potter and lord of the rings though
https://fmhy.net/reading
Use this website -it got all things u needed
book rec- Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen.
im reallly sorry for responding so late and thank you so so much for recommending me these
I really get into deep work like James, what to read?
No worries man
frankenstein is such a great book, timeless classic, tho the thing that stayed with me more than the horror was the philosophical side and the theme of otherness (god i cried reading this book sm)
Guys I have a massive exam I would love to read a light novel which makes me laugh and not very plot heavy so my uncle gave me pride n prejudice, I just wanted to know if it’s boring yk he is kinda old, n what is its vibe I know the plot is about wooing a rich lady but anything else I dunno
that is a NOT a light read 😭
Oh really? What’s its synopsis? Is it too much drama
its not a tough read but too dense for a light read. maybe read smth other than a classic during exams
Ahh okay thanks for the heads up
anyone know any books that has a good plot twist? (good as in it’s still a good book regardless)
have you read 'The silent patient? crazy plot twist
-a good girl's guide to murder trilogy (i liked the second one's plot twist better : good girl, bad blood 🧑🦯
no i have not. thanks for recommending though!
gone girl by gillian flynn
slow burn in the beginning but very intense by the latter half
okay thanks!
Mistborn Brandon Sanderson, Legacies Modesitt, Riddlemaster Patricia McKillip, Warbreaker Brandon Sanderson
Dude really? Once is enough.
do you guys know any fantasy hidden gems? i want to get my friend a book, but i don't read fantasy

hey, som1 know a site to have free ebooks ?
The books I listed above are good fantasy books. Also Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb, The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson, A wizard of Earthsea by Ursula LeGuinn, Imager by L.E. Modesitt, Magi'i of Cyador by L.E. Modesitt.
Some other good plot and fun to read, but not quite as great story books: Pathfinder by O.S. Card, The Way of Shadows by Brendon Weeks, Magician's Apprentice by Raymond Feist, Promise of Blood by Brian McClellan
Brent Weeks books are addictive and fast paced, but pretty dark though. If they don't like anything too dark I wouldn't recommend that one.
Annas Archive or Libgen
bro i was gonna say annas but piracy not allowed here
Sorry did not know that
thank you!! i'll be checking them out soon
🍀
its okay
Just finished **Thirteen **by Steve Cavanagh. It’s a tense, cleverly constructed courtroom thriller.
The serial killer isn’t on trial. He’s on the jury.
any books like the plague by albert camus?
Hmm, lets just hope the jury survives
that's not his motive but yes
weblib isnt the same as anna but it can help
heyyy, does anyone know of any good Romeo and Juliet fanfictions??
Absurdism came after world War I right?
to be fair, disillusionment is probably a very light word. Isn't absurdism more like, war had just shown how absurd life is?
Thankyou to Khaled Hosseini lol
Yeah true I did end up looking him up on google for quite a while after finishing the book
I'll buy A Thousand Splendid Suns next
After I finish the remaining 10 or so books that are sitting in my shelf 😭
gl gl,hope you recover from it 😭
take a 5 year break before reading it
Haha yeah not until next year atleast
Yaaay
im not capping i hated the way it was paced wasnt a bad book but MAD MAD MAD slow
u should try the myth of sysyphus too
Oh really? I didn't really mind it
I mean the last book I read before that was The Count of Monte Cristo so Ig that's why haha
haha fair enough
i am a hemingway fan boy
so i prefer faster paced books
how was that?
Ahh I see haven't read any of his works yet but I'll try to soon
Well you won't like the pace haha but absolutely fantastic for me
OH LUCKY YOU
you get to read him for the first time
It was a bit hard to get through in the middle where it's kind of a filler arc but the beginning and the end are just one hell of a experience
Hahaha yeahh
Which one will you recommend first
you shuold try old man and the sea, the sun also rises, both are pretty short reads then u can move to for whom the bell tolls
I read last 500 or so pages in one day lol
Ohh I'll look into them thanks
NO WAY how long did u to get through that
try jack london too
doestvesky (idk how his name is spelt) is also a fun writer to read
oh thats mad good
Read the Kite Runner in less than 3 days
no i meant for the last 500 pages how many hours did u take through it
Yeah I've read Crime and Punishment but I definitely have to read it again and with better translation lol
Took the whole day pretty much
it took me a solid 12 days i think im not sure
i juggle 2 books at once
one book im re reading or i trust the writer to keep me entertained and the other being a new book of a new genre or some philosophy
I see, I've seen some people do that as well
i looked for this particular translation hemingway mentioned in his memoir 'a moveable feast' i got started from there
Ooh
yeah but the only problem being i leave many many books unfinished
Dang well sometimes it's fine Ig
That's me with Wuthering Heights lol
It's been 2 months and I haven't finished it 😭
thats me with war and peace
Lmao that's understandable
that book is so hard to carry around and if i only read a book at home i just lose interest in the plot
Yeah it'd be a pain to carry around
i even considered tearing away the book after every 100 pages i finish
That's an insane thought 😭
then i thought it will be an insult to my man tolstoy
Fr
i mean i have done it in my childhoo i was so freaking bored i read the entire atlas
I've like 10 purchased untouched books that I really should get through
Jeez
i tore the hardbind cover pages firsst it got lighter
then every few pages i tore the ones i got done with
oh i have 4-5 like that
dune being the one i am looking to read first
Ooh nice one
I'll probably read The Odyssey next
Or maybe try to finish The Wuthering Heights
i feel carrying books around damages them and it builds a character to the book itself
what it has seen, where its travelled, how it was held etc etc
oh damn wanted to read that
Yeah that's understandable but I can't really carry my books anywhere
i could never not even capping
oh why?
And I like to read them in my room anyways
Well I live in kind of a remote place rn and there isn't anywhere to go to
OH shi thats the coolest thing ever
Not anywhere close atleast
im planning on doing that once uni is over
ima just sit and write scripts
come out and make the films after a few years and vanish again
Yeah I'll give it one final push as well if not then I'll just leave it
Sounds amazing ngl
Good luck man
Well my uni itself is in a remote place so not really away from society Ig there are students here
But regardless of where I am, I prefer my own company and I don't really care about anything else
oh damn still doesnt sound bad ngl
what course are u in?
i love a mix to be honest
i am very selective about the company but i love having that selective company
HEELLLNAWWW
Yeah Ig I'm kind of the same but as far as I've noticed I need to be alone atleast for a few hours in a day
agreed
Otherwise I just drift into this silent and coma mode where I barely respond and know what's going on lol
Lmao valid reaction, wbu
oh im the opposite
theres no visible difference just that my thoughts feel polluted with others desires and thoughts after a while
that shi seems to rub off on others
Dang yeah I could see why
finance
econ major
oh its WAY easier than eng
It's the same but different in a way that people don't like when I just stop speaking all together and it ruins the whole vibe of wtver the hell is going on at that time lol
Maybe yes but I just don't have the brains for it ifykwim
oh here its better as time passes i just aim to consume shit that causes me cancer at a faster rate and continue yapping around
im sure u do
but alr
Lol I see
I tried in high school but couldn't comprehend much of it
Physics was easier for me
physics was alr for me too
i just hated CHEM
fuck that shit
Haha yeah I didn't really like it either
But I knew I couldn't deal with finance and accounting and all that
And medical was a big no anyways
i was so stupid while i joint uni that way
"i am studying so i can make money, ima just straight up study about money"
that was the entire logic behind me taking econ
anti-climatic bs
Hahaha
There's a lot of change in mindset in this period
I was very different as well
and now i dont want money, like i dont really give a fuck, im ok with dying poor honestly
the downfall to poverty will suck
but fuck that
That's pretty interesting
yes its scary, my self-image keeps altering from considering myself as insane as a rabid dog to smart
I don't really find ppl like you here haha
Yepp relatable af
yeah i dont believe in the grind culture, i feel its fake, how can doing something u hate make u happy or satisfied wtf
i am just here so i feel stupid and can focus before exams
i got one tomr too lmao the only reason im active here
Yeah that's true, I feel the same way in that aspect too but at the same time I'm glad that I'm grinding smth that if not "love", I atleast like the subjects lol and I get money after grinding which isn't really the biggest goal of my life but I think I'll be happier with some materialistic things in my life lol
Good luck with the exam tho
I mean u question deeper the answer is a 0
Pure nihilism so I believed in daily purpose, that like we change it changes too in days weeks or months
But off-late I was listening to Rick Rubin and my view changed then a lil bit of Taoism and I have a brand new view on things now
Need it ahahah
I see I've heard of the basic philosophy of Taoism but that was when I was trying to find a way through life and looking for the "best" One which Ik sounds pretty fuckin stupid but now I just don't care haha, I do what I like and what I think is good for me or what will eventually bring me joy and idk what philosophy it falls in Or maybe I'm the biggest fool in the world but hey I don't care
wow thats some cirppling self talk
no it makes sense
whatever floats ur boat
im still looking for whats ideal for me
so i picked up this pocket notebook
i just write the questions i get
That's nice yeah I've done that too
i answer them
i then test the philosophy
make ammends or scrap it altogether and write down y i did it and where it fucked up and all the places it was good etc
then new ideas that seem good try them too
its an ongoing process thats never ending
and every ammend my life gets better honestly internally more peaceful
That's fantastic to hear man, it's a good process
you should give it a try
i hope so lmao
Yeah maybe I will but I'm quite happy with who I am as a person rn, there are obviously many things I lack and I maybe shit at but I'm comfortable with myself and I don't mind where my life is heading at this rate
But maybe it's all just a bubble and when it bursts I'll fall through
thats so cool to hear man
i just wish i had the clarity on what i wanted
i just know what i dont want
very well
But then again I don't mind that either
That's a big win
nothing of what i want lmao
HUMAN
like thts my compliment fam
peak human
It takes time but we eventually figure it out and sometimes u never know you want smth until you have it
FAIR
and when you have it, it's like shi that's pretty good
thats the most podcast coded question wtf
Hmmm just this state of mind I don't really know how to explain it but a few years ago I was very stressed and anxious about everything, I used to feel like I don't want anything I just want everything to be over but somehow I reached this point through that journey not really a turning point per say
OH thats cool
Haha now that I look at it
I read Vagabond twice and it changed my life tbh
i got here in a similar way
i just felt learning to see the beauty in things collapsing was also part of life things got way simpler after that
i stopped trying unnecesarily
then the buddhist idea of being in the moment
the way they say it, that was the cherry on top
wait the manga?
That's pretty cool, I definitely am the follower of the "being in the moment" It's great
Yes sir
Maybe it's a childish play among the huge philosophical ideas but I kind of somehow lived through it
i cant read jack shit online fam
this is the longest online convo i have held in a year maybe
and mangas offline seem stupid to me (no offense to u or other manga reader)
Unlike anything I've ever experienced
i wanted to read berserk too though
damn
Yeah besides Vagabond I've maybe read 1 or 2 other mangas lmao I can't read them for shit
But yeah again the influence that single unifinished piece of fiction has had on me is unmatched
on what do u read them?
ill send u something give me a sec
Pirated sites lol
For sure
nah fam online reading manga takes straight up SKILL
i dont have that shit in me
Hahaha I get it I can't read anything besides the few I've already read
does anyone know a good site for free e books to download
you can use oceanofpdf .com
Tyyy
most helpful message ever! ❤️ thx a bunch
its a treasure trove for free pdfs
i can even get my coding books of it 😆
❤️

<@&942391219206647828>
One ping is fine thanku
Sir/Ma'am, is there any permanent solution of these spam?
We're working on it
oh, glad to hear
good luck and bless you!
can you guys reccomend some good biographies or memoirs?
Into thin air
has anyone read the count of monte cristo?
Yesss
It really depends on who you find interesting to read about, it's a very wide category. Storm of Steel by Ernst Jünger is the most interesting memoir I've read, and I think it's one that can be interesting for even people without a particular interest in WW1. If you're OK with a fictional story told in the style of an autobiography, No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai is top tier literature
In general I think there's not much to be learnt from memoirs/biographies of the tech CEO types that are so popular in this approximate area of the internet, other than how to capitalise on your fame by selling a biography
peeps, if anyone wants to read «Wuthering Heights» or Tolstoy’s «Sunday» together and then discuss it, dm me
omg how is ittt
lemmme know
It's absolutely fantastic, despite being so long you never really feel like it's getting boring or dragging on. There are some parts/an arc where you might have to give yourself a slight push to read through but after getting through it you won't be able to stop reading
I read the Penguin Translation and it's really great unlike many other classics (English is not my first language) you can understand almost everything and you can easily get in the flow.
I read like last 500 pages in 1 day, I just couldn't let go lol
thanks for your recomendation.I will definately check them out.I read shoe dog which was also a good read.
Enjoy 🙂
I forgot discord automatically makes : ) into the emoji i don't like that
It's the first book that got me into reading. Before it were all these boring ones from primary school. But from this I couldn't get away from, It's funny but I used to be trying to show up precisely on time to imitate Count de Monte Christo 😉
Don't know how I would rate it now, but me as a teenager would give it a solid 10.
yo guys, the republic by plato, is it worth to read it?

Entangled Life : Merlin sheldrake

Someone recommended me Oceanofpdf and it has most of the books I read
Hiii, pretty late but, I enjoyed "I'm Glad My Mom Died" by Jeanette Curdy! It talks about her experience as a child actor, eating disorders, and relationships.

Thanku kindly
hello, i've been reading books on my phone and im looking at getting some of those books on paper, i've read like 6 self-help books and only one fiction (1984, the reason i haven't read any other fiction is that i enjoyed it so much that i can't find any other fiction that's as enjoyable for now) and i have a limited budget of about 3 (maybe 4) of the books that i've read, should i prioritize the self help books that i've learned the most from or should i buy 1984 plus some other fiction and maybe one or two self-help books?
i wanna get the self-help books that i can benifet from the most but i also wanna find some fiction i can actually enjoy i don't know what to do :(
I think you should try out fiction of similar genre, no point in buying the hard copies of self help books that you already know about (honestly reading self help does nothing, each of those 6 books probably promised you a complete change in life yet your life must pretty much be the same woth some improvements, upto you though)
To try out different fictions you can start reading on phone and if you like the book buy and read the rest as hard copy
Trust me when I say you'll grow up to think "why did I even bother to read all those self help books"
Just experiment, take action, and fail at things, teaches a lot more
Fictions on the other hand unlock a whole new level of cognitive imagination, for example if our current global system turns into a dystopian nightmare, people who've read 1984 are gonna be better off at understanding the nuances of the system than the ones who haven't.
i agree with your prespective, but i personally believe that not all self-help books are bad. Which makes me even more unsure
plus i'm not really that good at extracting a deeper meaning from fiction, i mostly think of it as entertainment
there's no obligation to feel like you're pulling any profound knowledge out of fiction, you're subconsiously learning much more than you realise from them anyway. it's good to just enjoy it
if you really must read self help then better to just p*rate them, atomic habits is probably the best of that genre and even that's barely worth reading - certainly not worth buying
the main reason i even wanna buy the paper version of them is because apprently reading on paper is better for absorbing the information or something like that
subjectively i definitely have an attachment to paper but i don't feel like i retain less from reading on my ereader
i don't know your financial situation but a kindle without ads runs you about £100, well worth the money if you end up "acquiring" books instead of buying paper copies
i definitely would prefer an e-reader over buying paper books but for now i can't buy one
For financial reasons?
yeah
Worth saving up for, in the UK a paper book is usually costing me about £15 so it's cheaper to get a kindle than 7 paper books
i might end up doing that, the 3 books that i wanted to buy alone cost 60 dollars when converted from my currency to dollars
Already over half way there then 🙂
yeah, i guess i'll just try to eventually get a cheap-ish kindle and just read on my phone until then. Thanks for the advice
You might even find one cheaper second-hand
i tried but they're around the same price as new ones somehow
atleast on the open market that is
Weird... but hang in there bro
So that I'm giving a book recommendation in the book recommendation channel instead of financial advice: The tartar steppe by Dino Buzzati is criminally underrated
If you want something cheap around like 70 bucks then buy the xteink4 I bought it a month ago and works like a charm it is small tho
doesn't exist in my country and if i were to buy it off of amazon the shipping alone would be like an extra 50 dollars
a colouring book that helps to relax and to relieve stress instead of scrolling on social media
By the way I'm not sure if y'all are familiar with Gojo from JJk. You can think extremely confident, #1 obstacle of all villains, unrivaled in power, not the main character. in a world with some freaky cursed magic and being top dog in control of that magic. The person I've seen in books most closely resembling him (from what I can remember) is, the prism from the Lightbringer series by Brent Weeks. I would recommend that series to JJK fans. The top level entities of that book series are a bit more crazy than JJK though.
this is a book recommendations channel. but i have a novel to recommend. its "a regressor's tale of cultivation."
<@&942391219206647828>
I like that one, reading it currently
Thanks
hello peepss
does anyone have book recos for high school math (preferably something not too advanced)? i'm terribly weak in my foundations and my current math subjects are crumbling because of it, and i plan to start again from the beginning of where my gaps started
Idk if you'd find it easier, but theres a lot of lower level math websites that will give problems and teaching for free so to speak. For a specific book, I'd need to search.
not sure what level high school math you are but corbett maths is a good starting point for working through foundation concepts (free website)
hello, i've finished reading "the picture of dorian gray" and i read 1984 before that and now i'm pretty clueless about what fiction i should read next, any recommendations on fiction that's worth reading that is similar to these two? thanks in advance
you can read animal farm which is also by george orwell or smth like the metamorphosis by franz kafka
basically youre into dystopian fiction i assume
Ive read a little bit of animal farm but it didnt attract me like 1984 did
To be honest with you im not sure what fiction i like, but so far dystopian fiction has attracted me the most
The metamorphosis seems pretty interesting, i think i'll check it out. Thank you
If you want a fantasy dystopia check out mistborn by Brandon Sanderson
Its set in a world where a tyrant has been ruling the planet for over a thousand years if i remember right
100 years of solitude - Marquez, Nausea - Sartre, The Handmaid's tale - Atwood, The Road - McCarthy and For whom the bell tolls - Hemingway.
Thank you both for the recommendations, ill check them out
I believe amazon is about to shut off older gens of kindles from future updates, best bet for getting one for a low buck. If the current cracking doesn't work for them, the public will find a way sooner or later.
Not many used old kindles where i live sadly
thats fair ive heard people say that 1984 is george orwell's best work
chat, any book on life gamification?
as in seeing my life as a game. A character with certain personalities. An ingame myth of legend who succeeded in life, character having to learn or adopt a certain philosphy to get further in life. With villain being unnecessary entertainment that waste ur time. A guiding voice that u can unlock once u starts to stacks win becoming closer to an ideal version of self.
essentially looking to expand my delusion, related book recommendation would be immensely helpful
this description instantly reminded me of a book called the alchemist by paolo coelho, you could check it out, its a self help book but its written in the way of a fiction book
Best?
As someone that's read animal farm, yeah I can say it's his best work. (Currently reading 1984 and it's pretty good but animal farm is amazing)
Orwell's Burmese days is overlooked. Beats out 1984 as his best work of fiction for me, Animal farm was too on the nose making it rather dull.
thank you, i'll check it out!
seems interesting, but considering the fact that it's a 7 book series and each book is 500+ pages, i'll pass, thanks for the recommendation though
Only 3 books really, the others are a different series set with different characters. Suit yourself though
currently reading it, really nice. Thanks!
reading frankstein rn
Shoedog
Another great read by Coelho is Veronica decides to die. It doesn't match your initial request, but insightful literature nonetheless.
I'll check that too, tyvm beautiful person

So far we have:

when breath becomes air by kalanithi
it's about a brain surgeon who gets brain cancer
memoirs of a geisha by arthur brown
its about a geisha
Sounds very good 🙂
@rancid charm "memories of a GEISHA" proceeds to explain that the book is about a Geisha, if for some reason, we didn't quite catch that first part. Top quality stuff.
- Salt to the sea (Ruta Sepetys) [Thanks @tribal grove ]
😋
Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage (Haruki Murakami)
The Surgeon ( Tess Gerritsen)
• Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (aka Blade Runner)
• The Martian
• Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman
• Dirk Gently by douglas adams (nr 2 is the best)
• Good Omens by Neil Gaiman
•Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
“So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed” by Jon Ronson NF
“Our Kids” by Robert Putnam NF
“Coddling of the American Mind” by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt NF
“Haroun and the Sea of Stories” by Salman Rushdie F **** this is one of my favorite books even though it’s a children’s book. When you know the story behind the story it makes an amazing read even as an adult
Has anyone read Gimpel the Fool by Isaac Singer?

@empty jackal Have you read Habibi by him? I really wanted to read that one but I'm scared it's not going to be as good and I'm just gonna b disappointed 😛
okay imma check it out 😄
Tell me what you think about it 😉
i will!
@empty jackal I just read Blankets for my AMST class, it was so good, really enjoyed it :3
@crimson eagle Oh yes! I'm happy to hear that! do you have a book like this to recommend to me? 🙂
Under a War Torn Sky by L.M Elliott is one I really enjoyed, about a WWII B-24 pilot whose plane gets shot down behind enemy lines. One of my favorites :3
Guyton and Hall textbook of medical physiology
Guyton and Hall textbook of medical physiology
@limpid musk that ending will make me cry prob
@crimson eagle , thanks ! I'll take a look at it!
emotional book indeed
For the space lovers:
I’ve just read Stephen Hawking’s ‘A Brief History Of Time’and I would really recommend it if you want to learn more about the different aspects of space such as black holes, the beginning and future (in his eyes) of the universe, time and interstellar travel...
I think that everyone can read it but if you have a background in college physics it’s more easier to understand.
Also the newer version has illustrations to understand the “sciency” stuff beter.
Yo his other book is amazing too
brief answers to the big questions
its kind of an archive
cuz i think he died before it was published
but it's great (not if you're religious tho, cuz he can be a bit anti-religion)
Yeah he kinda was, if you watched his biopic you can see the evolution of his opinion towards religion and he wasn’t a big fan I think
And I’m going to read Brief answers to big questions for sure, he explains things very good
yup! theres literally a section where he explains his theory on why he thinks god isnt real
he doesn't care at all lol
I find it really funny actually, his opinion changed a lot then because in his first book he always answers a question with a scientific answer but he also adds a answer with “God’s involvement”
Poem by Rudyard Kipling if
found this rly good book :)
has anyone read the Poetry Pharmacy? I was going to browse a few pages before deciding whether to purchase but my local bookstore doesn't carry it so I would have to order online

Yeah sure
hey! Do you guys know of any horror genre books to probably recommend? Something along the lines of Stephen King's
"The Mist" and the short story "Beyond the Aquila Rift"
It sounds super specific sorry about that
stephen king is a legendary author
@gleaming juniper He is! He was also on a lot of drugs during his time as an author which would explain a lot of the scenes he wrote down in his books lol

[The Power of Now] by Eckhart Tolle
One of the books that influenced me a great deal & shaping my experience of life.

I'm thankful for everyone who mentioned "The subtle art of not giving a fuck" 🙏 I've read less than 50 pages and I'm speechless, so many facts written in those pages... And especially thanks to @visual stratus for mentioning that it can be found as a pdf-file. I really do recommend anyone who's interest to read it.

Anyone have any cool literature books I can find.
and, they arent for me, they are for a younger person, so kinda like children's literature, like alice in wonderland or something like that.
@gleaming juniper the secret garden is lovely
ty
My edition is falling apart because i read it so often when i was younger :D
recommend the book
I read it when I was about seven for the first time but really appreciated it when i picked it up 3-5 years later. I think it's suited for any age though. If you spent a lot of time outside when you were a kid then you'll love it for sure. It's not written in a dumbed down kiddy way but in simple language (or at least what was simple 100 years ago).
I loved the magic tree house books by mary osborne, you could check them out

Anyone into detective novels, like Hercule Poirot or other Christie creations?

@knotty isle I live in Missouri but they're open. I mean they did close at first but then they reopened. Now you can either go there in person or just put holds on the books you want online and then pick them up when they're ready.
@hazy perch i never have gone to a public library in my whole life

Oh. I am from Delhi, and I used to go to the ITO library during my school days. In college, I use the college one. I mostly study physics texts these days, so the meagre number of fiction novels are enough for me .
@hazy perch meeee!!

Yee🎉
Which one is your favourite?
And I may suggest reading from e-Books as well . You will not enjoy at first but with time they do alright.
@gleaming juniper we are in india
@gleaming juniper Do you read books online?
@gleaming juniper what bout the covid cases.. Which country?
@hazy perch oh nice... u r from Delhi!
@gleaming juniper what bout the covid cases.. Which country?
@knotty isle US. They limit the number of people allowed in the libraries and people have to have the mask on all the time. Social distancing is required and people are not allowed to touch books and stuff. So librarians get books for them and give the books to them in bags so they won't accidentally touch hands and stuff.
I actually work at a library myself but I requested time off for this semester since it got really tough with classes.
@knotty isle Hehe, yea I am in final year of DU. How about you? You are into science ?
@gleaming juniper It must be so nice to work in a library lol. Do you get to read when you want or you are mostly engrossed with the duties there itself?
@gleaming juniper I have a freaking desire to love someone in library 😅😅.. I K it's weird but that's me!!!
@gleaming juniper It must be so nice to work in a library lol. Do you get to read when you want or you are mostly engrossed with the duties there itself?
@hazy perch yeah it's nice. I like working there. No, I don't get to read cuz we are supposed to be working lol. I can read during my break time though but I like to read at home so I just borrow a bunch of books. Sometimes I would have like 30 books, if not more, at home to read but I still don't read most of them lol.
@hazy perch yep I m an science student!! 11 the grade 😅
