What is a dystopian novel?
not yet I just finished Dubliners, James Joyce
Ohh I see I've heard about James Joyce but haven't read anything from him how was it
The stories where good, but it was tough to get through because I could only read stories in one setting. So it wasn't something I could pick up for a quick page or two for 5 min but need to make time for it.
Interesting I see
Did u read by pdf
No I bought this one as a physical copy in the book store
ikr it has became my fav!
Can I please get this book
“Introduction to Liturgical Theology” by Alexander Schmemann
ya i really liked deep work
the first third of it is lowkey like a manifesto on the consequences of the digital era
it kind of solidified a lot of my beliefs on technology that hadn't completely formed yet and the actual self help "heres how to study" stuff is quite good as well ... the author always uses anecdotes or examples of high performing ppl so it stays engaging
That's cool to hear
I'll try reading it then
anyone have book recos similar to courage to be disliked?
Laws of the human nature by Robert Greene
Hey! Could someone recommend some books for someone a bit anti-social to be more social? About talking to people, meeting new people, creating deep relationships, how to make good first impressions etc. also this is a weird one but I would also appreciate some book about how to talk to children/how to treat them (I don't really like kids and usually I try to avoid them, but apparently when you don't like kids and don't want to interact with them people perceive you as a monster so I think it would be nice to at least be able to deal with kids when circumstances force me to, I think it's also part of social skills which is worth to have.)
that sounds like stuff you shouldn't be learning from reading books but from interacting with people in the real world
the case with every self help book
hi, does anyone have any recommendations for psychological thriller or horror books? i recently bought the silence of the lambs
Yeah, but still, there are books such as "how to win friends and influence people" and I'm looking for smth like this. There is always a theory and practice, but sometimes practice without theory doesn't work and I think this is my case. I'm 25 and I interact with people a lot actually, it's not like I isolate myself. I just have a lot of anxiety meeting new people and I thought maybe there are some techniques/tips I could learn from the books or other sources.
I must say, I used to be exactly like this and the way I got over my fears and insecurities was for real by going out and pushing myself out of the comfort zone. Most of what I had read was rather an hinderance than something helpful. Think of people as them being the same as you. Everyone will have their own thing which makes them uncomfortable, no one is perfect and having that outlook eased out things. Everyone is always struggling with something so no one is better or worse than someone else and so on. “Sociability” is like a muscle, and you can read as many books about gym going and watching videos about that, but the muscle will only grow with practice! I’m sure you can do it! You just need to give it a shot. You’ll see it gets easier with time 🙂
Even so, if you do want desperately books, I’d recommend anything not the popular books, but rather the ones by Carl jung and to look at studies and so on. It can be more helpful to look at it from an analytical perspective, because self help books are for the most part just a cash grab scam
Thank you! It's actually quite helpful 🙂
john green books are really good
my favourite is probably looking for alaska
one of his books was also turned into a feature film
the fault in our stars
I'd like to offer an additional perspective. I recommend avoiding self-help books until you’ve engaged in some form of basic psychotherapy or sought community-based support. This isn't to say that books like How to Win Friends and Influence People are inherently bad, but they might not be as helpful if you're not in the right mindset. I first read that book just before starting college, and my outlook at the time wasn't the best. When I revisited it a few months ago, I was surprised by how misleading and harmful my earlier takeaways had been. Finding the "perfect" self-help book at the wrong stage of your life can sometimes lead to unintended negative outcomes.
Over the years, I've observed that turning to self-help books often signals a deeper need for support and may indicate unresolved emotional or personal issues.
if you are a day trader or you wanna learn dm
Does anyone have beginner philosophy related books? Or self help :)
can anyone suggest any good books for self control? not really in the context of like sticking to a studying plan or whatever but in things like sports and stressful situations
Meditations
The compound effect, it's not exactly about self control but it's almost the same idea
anyone has any other recommendations in stoicism except the big 3 (meditations/seneca/discourses by epictatus, i finished them all)
or I will be starting with Nietzsche and Dostoevsky universe...
before that I need to know about the Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli....is it good enough?
Thank you!
Friction books for newbies

Thank you for your help and time 🙏, it helped me to decide (I ordered the book) .
That's great to hear! I hope it helps you elevate your life, share the insights with us after you finish the book!🤝 @winter swift
letters from a stoic I think has only 40 letters of seneca, "letters on ethics" has the full collection of 124 letters in it
I searched for “letters on ethics” in my country and I didn’t find on any website .
maybe its not available in all regions
I know of this math-tuber but istg his thumbnails are unhinged 😭
Math bezos is more inspiring than the real one
English is my second language, my vocab level is below normal, i want read a few English books : The Book of Five Rings, Can't Hurt Me and Never finished, Never Finished: Unshackle Your Mind. Which one is the easiest to read?
Most definitely not the book of five rings, the other two have a similar level of diction so read any of the two that appeals the most
Thank you!
guys should i read deep work or slow productivity first?
Deep Work is great, I cannot speak for the latter text.
ty bro
👍
wydm by slow productivity?
Cal’s new book
Ohhh, ty!!
Devotion of suspect x
400 days (Chetan Bhagat😶)
Adventures of Feluda if you're into indian-themed sherlock holmes
any page turners similar to project hail mary but dont specifically have to be sci fi?
A Very Short Introduction to Economics.
Extremely gripping.
Dark Matter by Blake Crouch
don't read self help
I'd say that people could benefit tremendously from reading one or a couple if they practice the material gleaned across texts
like there are a few by Robert Greene, Jordan Peterson, and Goggins that literally changed my life
so it varies by individual; i'd refrain from making such generalizations!
I don't count the robert Greene book as a typical self help cuz he writes a lot of stories in them
Btw I ordered Mastery 😘
oh yea its a gem
Jordan Peterson also incorporates a lot of philosophy and psychology into his texts
and a sprinkle of bullshit too ^^
I used to like to listen to him until i realized he's too political with his thoughts
what is the record that james recomends?
you can pirate audio books too . or you can buy them if you got the money . that makes it easier to read books from authors like tolstoy
there is" must Read " list i recommend to everyone:
of course there is Cant hurt me and atomic habit and deep work but i saw that they got recommended several times
i would recommend having a goodreads account. if you do , send me friend request!
That's like saying do not work out
Skull emote
I have one! I'll try to find how to send it
Awesome, if anyone also wants to add me on good reads
https://www.goodreads.com/friend/i?feature=friend-invite-url&invite_token=ODNjNzkwNjktM2I2Ni00ZmViLWEwZDMtNzhmNzIwMTUzNmI3
to be fair after a certain point its all the same shit in a different font
Agreed, only few with actually different ideas
i think the big thing is that a lot of people know what a good person is and what a good person should be
and they know how they themselves should be
self help books wont get you there, sure they can help with clarity. Heavily recommend learning/getting into stoicism
or even taoism
most things are incredibly similar though
id argue psychology books would be better for self help than actual self help books
even financial help books are basically the same
get rid of your debt targetting the highest interest rates first, start saving as much as you can by cutting expenses, try to earn more money, build an emergency fund and then invest what you can in long term investment plans like S&P500 or w/e depending on where you live
You don't see psychology and Stoic books as self help? I do, they help very much.
I agree that you do not need to read too much books like David Goggins ones or similar ones.
Read Unscripted by MJ Demarco, here he speaks about how S&P500 "will save you".
Does anyone have recommended sci fi books?
I really liked the dilogy "An Absolutely Remarkable Thing" and "A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor" by Hank Green
I loved those books so much too! 😭
would recommend project Hail Mary by Andy weir
I read “the art of clear thinking” by hasard lee. I think hes like a fighter pilot.
Its a gud book

Ty!!!💕

This might be irrelevant to ask here but, what epub reader do you guys use on Mobile? Currently I am using Lithium.
i have a hisense touch and just use the kindle app. not sure if it works the same for apple or other devices but it works perfectly for me
I use ko-reader and I'm pretty sure James uses it too but why do you ask? how's Lithium?
Lithium is very simple. It doesn't have many features
I just want to try more epub/ebook reader

Have you read the defense by him
No, did he actually try to defend it? 💀
isnt this just about a man sexualizing a little girl
wait i wouldn't entirely j shun it out tho. while yes the topic is pretty grotesque, but theres a lot to be said about the amazing writing style and the conveyance of emotion and empathy within the book
i've read marcus aurelius' meditation
i personally enjoyed it quite a bit but it has a vibe like art of war
so some information is kinda just like "be a good person" lol
No its a book lol
It's really good better than Lolita in my opinion
Yeah but I wouldn't say that's the entire point of the book
Huh wha
Lowk lost
it came out before Lolita?
wait yeah ik
and personally, i dont like the idea of refusing to consider a book just because of specific themes since i think there's always something to be learned (unless the book provides 0 literary value) 🤷♂️
A Farwell to Arms - Ernest Hemingway
And no, I don't know this book because of that one family guy clip
what is the best book to learn how to learn is it "learn how to learn" or "how we learn"

The old man and the sea by Hemingway
@buoyant lichen not completely related to learning, but now I'm reading Moonwalking with Einstein by Joshua Foer and it is been quite interesting

Someone here uses Hardcover? Would you recommend it over StoryGraph or Goodreads?
okk I hope you enjoy reading

Read The Lathe of Heaven last year and it was good https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lathe_of_Heaven
The Lathe of Heaven is a 1971 science fiction novel by American writer Ursula K. Le Guin, first serialized in the American science fiction magazine Amazing Stories. It received nominations for the 1972 Hugo and the 1971 Nebula Award, and won the Locus Award for Best Novel in 1972. Two television film adaptations were released: the PBS producti...
Ward No. 6 and Other Stories, 1892-1895 by Anton Chekhov
Rec of the week: None of this is true by Lisa Jewell
Sounds interesting
amazing book
I just know that's one of the sci-fi classics and pretty recommended
Can you talk about why one should read it and how can it be practical in life? (even in a philosophical perspective)
I feel really far from non-fiction that I need someone to convince me otherwise, I just feel like there's something I'm missing
such a good book by a very underappreciated Russian writer
Can’t get enough of lisa’s work
Reaping the benefits of books is a personal matter; what convinced me to read it and my takeaways likely won't be the same for you.
That said, the scope of the novel is huge, spanning thousands of years among multiple planets. One of the central character's jobs is 'psychohistorian': an algorithmic science that allows him to predict the future in probabilistic terms and work to shorten the galactic turmoil. Within this, themes of power, violence, purpose, technology (which Asimov seems prophetically gifted with), love and others are explored. Quite thought provoking too
God it smells like something I could really like... I like all of the themes stated and "psychohistorian" is as intriguing as it sounds. I also like tech so :). I'll add this on my to-read list then, thanks for taking the time I really appreciate it!
hey guys can u all recommend me a book that similar to 3 body problem???
or anything that's sci-fi mind bending book
are there any worth-to-read books on supply chain management guys? i was a little overwhelmed when searching for one
Can anyone recommend a philosophical poem book.
"Thus Spoke Zarathustra" by Friedrich Nietzsche, "The Myth of Sisyphus" by Albert Camus, these both have poem undertones
"The Hollow Men" by T.S. Eliot, "Les Fleurs du mal" (The Flowers of Evil) by Charles Baudelaire, and "The Book of Disquiet" by Fernando Pessoa
these are all kinda dark though so warning on that
darker the better and thankyou.
yeah of course i would highly recommend reading "The myth of Sisyphus" not really poetry but its good
oh its just 119 pages. nice
Rec of the week:
- No rules rules by Reed and Erin
- First lie wins by Ashley Elston
Can anyone suggest a good read in the self-help genre? Thinking of starting my new year with one :p
so I would say '
"Can't Hurt Me" by David Googins
"Art of Being Alone"
"Don't Believe Everything You Think"
so I currently I need to finish the last two books
I have read can’t hurt me and i’ve mixed opinions abt it 💀
will check out others, thanks for the recs 🦦
Why so?
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/34890015
Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, needs to read Factfulness at least once. It changed my whole perspective on not only my studies but daily life for the better.
do it today - darious forour
the power of subconsioous mind - joseph murphy
surrounded by psychopaths- thomas erikson
TBH, I felt the book was a bit too stretched and overly focused on physical endurance. Goggins’ constant urge to prove himself, diving into situations underprepared, and pushing to the absolute limits became repetitive. Also, it had some moments that felt kinda sexist—ykwim. I’d rate it a 3. It’s good for motivation if that’s what someone’s looking for, but I didn’t enjoy it that much. No offense.
Hey! First of all, thank you so much for your recommendations. I absolutely loved Do It Today! I think this was the book I’d been looking for all along. I’ve set some goals for this year, and this book has been incredibly helpful in building a routine around productivity and overcoming procrastination. I’ve taken notes on everything, and hopefully, I’ll be able to apply them and churn the most out of this year. Morepver, I have read the second book years ago- it was an absolute read. Will let you know about the third one which I might finish by monday (after my exam tom) hehe
has anyone read Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking?
I'm thinking about buying it, and I wanted to know if it's worth it
Yah u might be right but the reason I like it because I use it for my goals and on my current level in my life. So maybe if u can use it that way rather than David googins way then that would be great but that's just my POV
Solaris
The Republic - Plato.
haahah goo to know
“The Silent Patient”
-Alex Michaelides
Easy read, interesting plot, finished it in one night.
I opt for it every now and then after a long day of studying or an exam.
Hi has anyone read the book " how to become a straight-a student from cal newport" and how was it?
good one alongside with learning how to learn
got it ty
"The name of the wind" - Patrick Rothfuss
If anyone interested in reading good fantasy with a interesting magic system(hard magic system)
as someone who does not normally read, my cousin reccomended "Stories of Your Life and Others" by Ted Chiang, and it is probably the best book (short story collection) ive ever read. give it a shot!
guys it this Novel good? The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
I would say it is decent, many consider it a masterpiece but honestly they just say it because Fitzgerald was a revolutionary writer and this book was a big contribution to American literature.
In short—you won’t regret reading it, but it ain’t the best option out there.

recommendations for historical fiction? I really liked the iliad and all the light we cannot see, so those kinds of books
try circe? check it out
Oooh I've read the song of achilles and really enjoyed it so I'll give it a try!!
what did you like about it? I personally didn't enjoy it very much
recommend the book thief and man's search for meaning, although the latter is non-fiction.
o why's that? i found it to be a beautiful read
I found to be more like a fan fic than anything
I also think the pov of Patroclus is horrible
because of the writing or the narrative? im very confused
In the iliad, obviously the info was more accurate and a more reliable representation of the characters but I found the song of achilles so unique . Like, the descriptions of ancient greece and how the war was portrayed by the author was beautiful to me
The only thing I agree with would be that patroclus would have definitely been more masculine and like idk soliderish than he seemed in tsoa
The book thief had me tears oh my god
Ikr!! But since you’ve read that one I also recommend Pachinko by Min Jin Lee
<@&942391219206647828>
gotta tell the mods to slow down

"Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" pkd
And then there were none by Agatha Christie
<@&942391219206647828>
on some real shit would any of you recommend karl marx’s works?
Always form your own opinion after reading, read what’s wrong about communism and capitalism and why ones more popular than the other
has anyone read nexus by yuval noah harrari yet?
i heard communist manifesto is a good start since its so short, ive read excerpts of das kapital. honestly, my politcal ideolgies textbook(or any textbook on political theory/political & social philo) was also a great start.
Marxism has been around for like 200 years so its grown so much. Early interptrations went down the road or marixst-leninsim (which became stalinism, maoism, etc) but that lwky died off after the soviet unioion. most"mainstream" socialist ideolgies in western world like go back on what some marx said
TLDR: Marx spends alot of time crituquing other ideolgies, and then asserting marxism. I think its important to grasp all of poli ideolgies like @quiet kiln said. political beleifs aside, if you understand what marx said, i think taht anyone can find his analysis of captialism very impressive even if u dont beleive in it.
but yah i would start iwth a textbook then moving to individal writings
mb if thats yap
Can’t disagree and the black shirts and reds is also a good book for beginners
Diary of a wimpy kid
Idk what genre you like, Im currently reading Lonesome Dove and its great
hello, I just created a discord bot with book recommendations, how you think about it with book club?
has anyone read infinite jest? i was thinking to buy but its kinda costly
Anyone got some productivity and habits books they reccomend?
"Atomic Habits" by James Clear and "Make Time" by Jake Knapp and John Zeratsky are good for starters
"The 5 second rule" by Mel Robbins will drastically change your life
I 've read the whutering heights and I feeel that book is suck :)))) at least the characters are all terrible.
i read it last year
i really enjoyed it but it also took me months to finish (wasn't reading it exclusively)
dfw was a talented, very creative writer who was unfortunately taken hold of by this miserable idea that all of his words were worth reading. i loved it, but it's frustratingly verbose. you can cope and say that 'that's the point! it's all about entertainment and our attention spans!' but the truth is that large swaths of the book are unnecessary and obnoxious to read through. with that being said my copy is heavily annotated and there are some absolutely beautiful sentences in there, it's a great book. especially his writings on addiction and mental health. there are some fucking terrible chapters & bits in there, also, because he was obviously a closet racist/misogynist
can y'all recommend any novels with a similar emotional resonance as stoner?
The Organized Mind by Daniel J Levitin is fantastic.
can anybody recommend a small book for a beginner?
I just started reading Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer
Any book recommendation on sharpening the Mind?
what kind of book? what kind of beginner? i recommend vonnegut to everyone but idk what you like
oh i've heard good things hows that
So far pretty cool. It's pretty short too so very intimidating book all around.
Very tense
it's short so it's intimidating?
i think i remember the premise sounding interesting i've been searching the used book stores for it but no dice
right! yeah i hear that i'm so fried i have little time for dense fiction rn
Libraries are where its at
If you have the app Libby you can put as many library cards as you want on your account
also my bookshelf is most of my belongings & books heavy
yo that's crazy
can you download epubs or is it like weird proprietary reading
It depends on what format the library has it in
It'll be whatever the publisher makes it
oh interesting
i have an ereader but i haven't been working as much lately so less digital
but thats great to know
i wanted to read 52 books this year but that's kind of limiting me to shorter books
Yeah I just keep signing up for library cards when I go to new towns
I now have the mega library
yeah that's fantastic
A book a week??
That's gnarly
i read often & quickly but idk if it'll be manageable this summer
anyway there are so many books
i have to constantly reckon with how little i can ever really know
crazy
anyway always hit me w the digestible-short-but-thematically-dense book suggestions
I've been trying to get back into reading for fun
So short books that I can finish and get that satisfaction from in a shorter time are where I'm starting
I'll be reading The Stranger next
I would like any fiction
White Nights
😭 its all good bro, I also recommend the book that got me started in classical fiction
1984 George orwell
If you are into politics, social dynamics, u like conspiracy, history etc, it will be a banger
white nights isnt recommended if you havent read dostoevsky before idk why , I just read it as a 2nd dostoevsky book, I liked it a lot
So I just recommend it
Crime And Punishment is also rly cool
then theres this book where ppl are on Mars and its a similar plot w/ Animal Farm , Red Rising
great book overall, a friend of mine recommended that to me
this is my favourite novel
absolutely love that book
i hear that
vonnegut, murakami, camus, & le guin would be my recs. specifics depend on your taste but they're all pretty fantastic writers so it doesn't matter too much
Awesome! I'm excited to try it
i hope you enjoy it! let me know what you think
Thanks for your time mate 👍
I will check them out
what do y like the best about it ?
its kinda interesting to see that ppl mark that as their favourite novel
raises alot of interesting questions in a very brief package. the last 1/4th of the novel is just beautiful, i think. i don't think it's the best book ever written, (obviously very apathetic) nor the best i've ever read, just the one that, at this point in my life, i've found particularly fantastic. there's the absurd-existentialist themes, the musings on what it means to be human, on conformity and religion. it's nice because i can give it to a friend, give them an afternoon or two, and see what questions they got out of it. it's raised some cool conversations
i loved the long walk
so interesting
not a horror, but its a horror in terms of maybe nihilism and just having no purpose
white nights is interesting. i read it a while ago and forgot all about it, gotta reread it in russian ngl
yeah, interesting point of view. I'd say the absurd-existensialist themes that you are reffering to aren't too intense in comparison to the myth of sishiphus. But the story's vibe is really good, I also found many elements of comedy through out reading it and thats why I'd say it was a really nice read
combining both philosophy, a nice story, a weird mc, some comedy into all that concluded some real good reading sessions
what do you think about absurdism in general?
definitely not as intense as the myth of sisyphus, but they have different goals. the myth of sisyphus is more rigorously spelling out his philosophy while i think the stranger is more illustrating it. it's more entertaining but less descriptive. the stranger certainly lacks some substance in comparison. idk i've talked to some friends who didn't care for the protagonist at all and didn't understand him or his motivations & so found the story pretty weak. but personally i find the disassociation & aloofness relatable, which probably says more about my character looool
i'm a fan, i think it was helpful for me to read up on because as a kid i really struggled with alot of related concepts. i think since i was raised in a cult & then after, heavily atheist, so existentialism was natural to gravitate towards. helped put alot of big childhoood feelings into words, especially the idea of human rationality being incompatible with an irrational universe. but i'm kind of turned off by the very pessimistic absurdists i've talked to. absurdism isn't necessarily apathetic, but i've certainly met people who use it as an excuse for indifference. i think existentialism usually has a more optimistic outlook. i don't know, what do you think about absurdism in general?
yeah definitely, I was able to adapt new ideas thanks to that book. Letting go of worries for example has definitely become more easy after that read. This book was great overall as a starter pack to absurdism. Like it warms you up for myth of Sisyphus
wdym pessimistic absurdists? And to answer your question, I like absurdism a lot. I feel more drawn towards the personality of the conqueror that Camus presents in the myth of Sisyphus, I do like a lot the idea of the philosophical suicide. Theres a but tho. My best friend who supports Camus like crazy and embodies absurdism on a big scale, often tries to explain to me why absurdism is very practical as a way of living life but I still find some of its ideas to not fit into the practical needs of my character fe, to compete, level up in life, do stuff, without caring if its meaningless or not. I just prefer the idea of Ubermensch and in general, stoicism if you except the religion mentions that it has on it.
Like it just goes on and on about how the universe is so irrational and random and thats the only thing for sure, the only certain thing, yes I dont disagree but down to earth I can't see all that irrationality being useful in our lives. It's just too existensial
I prefer rationality, working with facts and ideas that apply to what we work with
The universe being irrational is an idea we cant work with. It's too heavy
The stranger does a better job in explaining how to apply absurdism ngl, but the mc goes too far about "well my mother died but either way its the same thing 😭 ". To real human psychology? Unrealistic. To try to explain the irrationality of the universe and to give you a taste to the absurd? Great example
And in general, many people especially philosophy majors dont really like the idea of brining philosophies together and going on and saying, you know what, I like this from absurdism, I like this from X philosophy thats completely opposed to absurdism , I take those together and still build my own ideas w/ the ideas of these people
Personally, ubersmench from Nietsche realllyyy clicks to my head and from there, I do like to take certain elements from other philosophies
what philosophies do y like best?
It's a sci-fi story about this sort of "area 51" where a group of scientists are sent in to do, something? I haven't gotten very far into it but it's super cool to read. Very trippy. Very Lovecraftian.
Best salesman or sales book
100M leads by Hormozi

<@&942391219206647828>

Guys I am in a reading slump. Any thrillers or mysteries y'all could recommend!

A Hero of Our Time by Lermontov
does anyone have recommendations for a ereader that’s not kindle? (preferably under $150 USD)
Barnes and Nobles, KOBO e-reader.
You can get it in cheap for around $60.
Hey you. Yeah, you.
The one with eyes barely worthy to witness what I’m about to unveil. Let me introduce you to the single greatest piece of fiction humanity has ever dared to create — Reverend Insanity.
This isn’t just a story. It’s a devouring. A rewriting of your soul. When you read Reverend Insanity, you don’t walk away the same. No. You walk away damaged — with a heart hollowed out, cursed with the eternal knowledge that no other story, no other universe, no other character will ever come close.
The worldbuilding? Immaculate.
The philosophy? Unapologetically raw.
And the best part? It doesn't pander. It doesn’t ask for your approval. It dares you to follow — to witness something truly, unapologetically brilliant.
And when you're done — when you’re broken, when no other story satisfies you and you’re staring at the ceiling wondering what to do with your life — know this: you’ve seen the peak. You’ve touched greatness. And it was glorious.
any book recommendations for a beginner?
(Fun to read if possible) I just want to get started
all the books I read have a mental health (usually kinda depressing) aspect to it but "Alone With You in the Ether" is pretty solid. it's a light read (i would say) with a psych+romance blend
thanks for the recommendation imma check it out later ;!)
hey people, i want to check out Sylvia Plath's writings. Saw pieces of her work over Pinterest and other places. Can anyone recommend something from her that might be a good start for me?

i think the bell jar is her only book and what she’s mostly known for. most of the pieces of work from her that you’ve read are probably from the bell jar. i haven’t read it myself but a close friend of mine loves it.
my friend did tell me it’s a bit depressing though. from what i know, sylvia plath struggled a lot with her mental health. so i would just be careful with reading the bell jar if you have a history with mental health or maybe struggling with it rn. it could possibly be triggering for you
You can try her poetry, that was what she was renowned for when she was alive, i think a collection of hers is named "Ariel"
yea i guess some of it is from the bell jar. Thanks for the suggestion and for being caring enough to inform about the mental issue thing
🫶
oh okay got it, thank you very much 🫶
i wasn't crazy about the bell jar but her poetry is astounding
need some poetry book recommendations.......
Night Sky with Exit Wounds by Ocean Vuong
do you read any oth poetry book from Ocean Vuong???
I own 'Time is a mother' but haven't read that yet. A book that I have read, which isn't a poetry book, by him that I love is "On Earth, we are Briefly Gorgeous"
interesting, i mostly read them on screen i dont have much hard copies but i started to oder some like last time i odered white night and i loved it so mucchhhhhh......
I've been wanting to read white nights for a while. You've pushed me to get it at all costs now
and yeah, the sensation of reading the physical copy of a book is completely different from reading it on your screen. Though it's more sustainable, I honestly prefer the physical version
if you didnt read it youre missing so much, trust me just go for it.....
I might just have to
Gosh I feel you. The cost of books is so high 😭

you can try sl loney too
good stuff gng
philosophical books? anyone? top 5 ig
Its not like nonfiction but it def has philosophical themes and sparks a lot of thinking, but Mark Twain's The Mysterious Stranger. It's a short story, very interesting ending.
Also Asimov's "The Last Answer"
Idk if you want metaphysical but I feel like if you squint hard enough there's definitely philosphy in a lot of Murakami's books my fav is Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki
Finally another weird maybe slightly philosophical book is Blow Up Stones by Cortazar, speciifcally the first story I think it was like axolotls or something
quantum supremacy by michio kaku maybe
thanks man, what do you think about the ancient philosophers like plato should i read them too?
Yeah I think you could like The Republic maybe
Oh yeah also my personal favorite philosopher Nietzsche’s books could be really nice, like Beyond Good and Evil and on the Genealogy of Morals
TOG, ACOTAR, GAM, GOT, HA, COTG are my fav series yet
TOG mentioned
someone should read no longer human by osamu dazai
that was my last read book. it was aight
try six of crows and priory of the orange tree if u like adventure/fantasy
i'm not into romcom or any romance, but i wanna read some young adult fiction, any rec?
recommendation to not read slight edge
I’d recommend reading Better than the movies if you’re into clean romance
Another one would be I hope this doesn’t find you. It’s enemies to lovers, she fell first he fell harder and doesn’t have any spicy scenes either
Oooo now that I think about it, Never thought I’d end up here is also good. Childhood enemies to lovers but The trope 😭🤌 the only spoiler is there is ONLY ONE BED
thank you! i’ll definitely check them out later! i just found and started reading We, The Drowned and got totally pulled into the historical fiction vibes hehe :D but i’ll keep your recs on my list! 🫡
any asian book recommendations?

ahhh yess! i actually finished the wind up bird chronicles recently and loved it! ! haven't gotten the chance to read colorless tsukuru tazuki yet, will do soon
Reverend Insanity, it got banned though so its not done...😞

does anyone have the metamorphosis book pdf?
metamorphosis is good, look for the physical book, I personally think it's better
simple reading
Look on ocean of pdf
I want to start reading philosophers books, could you recommend?
Try stoic philosophers, it’s helpful too in general so a good starting point.
Notes from underground by dostoevsky (he’s more of a novelist than like a philosopher but he explores like morality etc) and the nietzsche books I recommended earlier
Thankyou
Alright I hv read other works of Dostoevsky
- white nights
- notes from underground
- crime and punishment
Recently started exploring these and kinda enjoying it
( currently reading notes from underground)
<@&942391219206647828> kekwait 10hours with a criminal

The novels of Brandon Sanderson are peak, just started reading some according to the order, now i cant sleep without anticipating the next part. i have only read about 16 books yet. If you have some extra time, do check his books out. he covers all kind of genres (generally) in different sets. my favs are like the Mistborn series, stormlight etc.

Thanks!
Start from the greeks
I don't think promoting your server is allowed here
Mb didn’t relize
try Lovecraft, it's not really “horror” but King is inspired by him
If you're still digging for horror, there's the haunting of hill house by shirley jackson, the island of dr. Moreau by h.g. wells, world war z by max brooks and night by elie wiesel(not an actual horror but it's a holocaust memoir which, if you ask me, is pretty horrifying)
thank you!!!
can anyone know how can i access books for reading free online?
just search the book name then pdf
like atomic habits pdf
@merry bronze
Annas archive in google
@merry bronze z library
@rich harbor 👍
Libgen (use a vpn as it is banned everywhere and try a bunch of the mirrors)
I love mistborn series !
Library genesis, use brave browser
Anyone have a preferred app for eBooks that contains partly free eBooks within?
I've been trying to find more than one app to rely on and I'm not up with cash just yet to blow it all on books, although I wish.
So I'll consider and look into any app.
I sound stupid but, I love mangas but I'm somehow interested in novel, I don't know what it is though, what's a novel and can someone reccomend for starters?
A novel is really just a book with words. You could start with the Death Note light novel for starters by M.
Stranger by Albert Camus was a quite nice novel, I've recently tried to catch up on the classics and I liked it a lot. It's a really short story.
im gonna start reading this, thank you!
do you have other reccomendations?
Osamu Dazai, Yukio mishima, Kenzaburo Ōe, Jorge Luis Borges
Thank you! I might ask for more after reading all of it hehe
But remember that those authors are, well, known for writing really sad books so if your struggling with something rn then it may not be a great time for that
Besides maybe Borges, his works are great for escapism in my opinion, he had a talent for describing really interesting and profound scenarios and worlds with short stories
Nah i prefer dark ones, I really wanna explore human psyche and well I love investigating stuffs
then dazai is probably for you
If we're talking about Eastern stuff Yan Lianke is also quite nice, his books are banned in mainland china
Dream of the Ding Village would be a great piece to start with after reading previous recommendations
If you're into dark fucked up stuff
thanks so much, this community is so wholesome
np
Hello, any recommendations for dark Chinese/Japanese/Korean classics that have been translated into English?
By the way, the shorter the book the better.
@sturdy breach I ordered kafka / Dazai
The sons: Judgement, Stoker, Metamorphosis and letter to his father by franz kafka
The setting sun and No longer human by Osamu Dazai
Nice
recently went to a franz kafka museum in prague, some great stuff right there
In my country more ppl talk about The Trial by Kafka for some reason
Even though i feel like methamorphosis was just written better, it was more engaging
The Trial is also great but because it tries to cover the absurdity and abuse of the bureaucracy, giving the main character and you the feeling that you actually don't know wtf is going on through the whole book, the prose feels a bit more challenging imo
but yeah if you want to try it then that's also a great idea
@sturdy breach I FOUND IT
I was looking for a novel or book that talks about existentialism and abt meaning from around us. I somehow stumbled upon Albert Camus, imma buy the full set
have you tried reading his books?
Yeah Camus is great
I remember that we briefly covered The plague when I was still in school
I'll definitely go back to it some day and re-read it because yeah he's like one of the best authors for western europe
Him, Dostoyevsky, Kafka and a few other authors actually made me interested in reading books again
Like even though Dostoyevsky's books are maybe not that easy to read, the stories felt really interesting and original a the time
I never thought I'd like novels and stuff
I was into self help and educational books
reading tokyo ghoul influenced me to try out novels
self help is nice but often just kind of a few bulletpoint of ideas stretched into a whole ass book
yeah but it was fun like reading the history stuff like references they made
You mean the manga right?
After reading dazai's books you can also check out junji ito's manga adaptation of no longer human
I've read it and it's fucking sickkkk
yes, the anime sucks
I watched junji ito anime, I loved it
I've finished Tokyo Ghoul, I'm about to finish Tokyo Ghou: Re
Not really an anime guy but I've watched serial experiments lain and it's pretty cool
My girlfriend really tried to convince me to watch evangelion but idk it's kinda long and i feel like the internet spoiled all of it for me XD
I really hate that part HAHHAHA that's why I have no soc meds rn, only messenger and discord for communication
coz everytime I scroll I get spoiled by the anime I'm currently watching or series
Yeah like what's even the point after spoiling it, it just takes the fun away
like its funny how they put "spoilers alert" but the picture isn't blurred out
Paprika and perfect blue were also nice but that we're movies
I never watched that but by looking it up I think imma like it
Imma try the manga
Does anyone have any book recommendations to begin learning about the history of England?
Hello,
I think I'm super egocentric and feel insecure how to interact with others toward my friends and family. Especially being super pragmatic and straightforward, not taking into account / listening what my friends feel.
Is there any book recommendations / how to improve myself to be more emphatic and less egocentric ?
That's the power of any fiction buddy, you dive into characters' inner thoughts and feelings and get to see for a moment the world in their eyes.
And ig it also comes down to practice listening, letting people express themselves and not jump on everything that you see contradicting your beliefs and discuss with them a middle ground
Hmm, I see. Just to be mindful and listen
Nah I'd say take over the world, show dominance
just kidding
i would say just practice controlling your brain and thoughts. your brain is a tool to use when needed. it doesnt have to be on all the time. connect with yourself deeper and you will be able to empathize with others.
"Why do you look so sad"
"Because you speak to me with words and I look at you with feelings"
but then again I dont know anything at all
psychotherapy can help with social skills if you are in the position to afford that
Howdy. Has anyone here dove into east asian literature? Wut works in particular should I read + start from?
The Life of a Stupid Man by Ryunosuke Akutagawa. It's really sad and suicidal though so tread cautiously.
And Korean or Chinese classical literature book recs? Let me know.
Short stories preferred.
looking for slow burn romance books
American Psycho is my favorite romance book
hey guys, i just wanna ask, does anyone have an alternative book to atomic habits? ive been looking to read a self helpy kind of book but i dont want to read atomic habits and im looking for something a bit different
Hmm I dont have a specific book in mind but maybe looking through books about different communication style would help. I agree with @ornate valve in making observations whether in fiction or everyday life. From what I've experienced, people make emphatic conversations by active listening thus asking more questions about the topic.
Vinh Giang in yt also helped me navigate conversations too. I think there is one vid about listening but he also covers other things.
Do you have something in mind you wanna focus on? I think atomic habit is a great book but there are tons of productivity books that also covers different things.
mainly just how to stay dedicated
ooo if being consistent and staying dedicated that would be goal setting, purpose/vision kind of book. usually they gives you like graphs and templates to work on. I have Start Doing Something That Matters by Michael Bungay Stanier in my tbr list
The sound of waves by yukio mishima is my personal fav
where rainbows end by cecilia ahern the most slow burn ive ever read. it is in epilogue btw so almost everything is in conversation
cool will read for sure
I like that def added to my list
hope you enjoy it!
Imagine this was real but nobody believed the guy
@void cosmos you’re the only mod I remember by name
Also this guy is in some of the other chats
Does anyone have any books for self teaching more effectively and efficiently? Ie, how to schedule, how to process information more effectively, etc.
tyyy
<@&942391219206647828>
thanks
Hey there can someone recommend me a good horror book I have been wanting to read one
I haven't read any good horror books so share it we me too
notes from underground by dostoevsky
not exactly related to "self-improvement" (probably quite the opposite) but it does ig teach you in some sort of counter intuitive way to be better

Best book for understanding discrete mathematics (other then Kenneth H rosen) for beginner and I'm currently having difficulty in understanding recurrence relation if there is any resource or book that are better in theory part that I can refer to?
Excuse me, I want to ask, if anybody knows some books about electronics for beginners(not that typical ones, just something you guys read and experienced that was easy to understand). Even better if the book talked about how to start, had chronological list on what to do first, what to learn first and such.

The two books i've complete so far are midnight library and hooky vol 1, to me books are very daunting and long to get into
books on analytical thinking and decision-making ? New job requires me to look a lot on statistics and data, i guess it would be good for my career to research that rabbit hole

I’ve got a couple books for you guys:
—— Realistic Fiction ——
The Sun Also Rises [Hemmingway]
A Farewell to Arms [Hemmingway]
The Awakening
[Kate Chopin]
NOTES:
-
Hemmingway can be boring. It’s something you have to make yourself comfortable with. Very masculine in writing.
-
Kate Chopin is a high school classic, but if you haven’t read it, it’s a beautiful classic.
—— Philosophy ——
The Myth of Sisyphus
[Albert Camus]
My View of The World
[Erwin Schrödinger]
The Enchiridion
[Epictitus]
The Upanishads
[~] (Kind of hard to understand for me)
-
Albert Camus was the first Author I read for philosophy after taking an ethics class.
-
Epictitus is short in writing.
-
My view of the world is beautiful 10/10
—— Historical Fiction ——
The Historian
[Elizabeth Kostova]
Native Son
[Richard Wright]
boys both of my epub download sites went offline

The world wide web version and darknet version of the zlibnwebsite link is mentioned in the wikipedia too
new in these stuff. one recommendation that i think worth it.
Émile Zola has books that left me astonished. especially the Soviet-collection of tragedies, stories entitled "Victim of advertising". masterpiece. the only collection that made me upset(in a good way), the very first time i felt compassionate towards characters. to some of them i felt pure rage.
forget the sites and get an IRC desktop app like mIRC or textual and learn to get them through servers. there are a bunch of tuts on reddit
theme might seem absurd out of context but check essays on love by Alain de Botton please
Yes, it is absolutely worth it
this jp novel series was good. it's about
A story set between the Land of the Living and the Land of the Dead, where a cat carries the words of those who long to meet again but cannot—delivering their messages to the ones left behind.
listening to its audiobook. it's good.
the first sparkling feeling for someone isn't a true indicator of a great partner for u. it can be just because the person is generally good looking and attractive in qualities that are easy to notice.
Any good Marketing books/research papers? Practical is preferred but so are books that delve into social behavior and or phycological theorem regarding gaining favor.
Hello, anyone have any recommendations for East Asian literature. Countries like Korea, China and especially Japan is preferred. Classics are preferred as I don't really enjoy contemporary books that much. Anything depressing like Dazai and Akutagawa please.
great read for sure, looks like ain't going to die alone with the way things are going for me
enjoy
Yukio Mishima in general
Confessions of a mask (I hope Ive got the title right)
I've read Dazai first, then Mishima and he reminded me of Dazai's works
I see, will definitely try.
Guys i want to start reading any book recommendation for self improvement? Or philosophy
Letters From A Stoic : Seneca is a great start for Philosophy
for self improvement i would suggest Ikigai,
and definitely journalling, not a book recommendation, but making it a habit would help you be consistent in reading aswell
Thankyou
Is there any free pdf books to read with? I want to buy at bookstore but quite exp here
DM
self improvement : CANT HURT ME by david goggins
too cliche
bruh ik, but i like the tone
similar to THE SUBTLE ART OF NOT GIVING A F by Mark Manson
Robert Green books are better...
now, that's just overated
i mean toooooooooooooooooooooooo overated
i thats true btw
i left reading self imp books long ago. just read some overrated titles
i feel like Success is a mix of preperation and luck,
ain't reading self imp books makes us waste time, cuz success for each are different
David Goggins was succesful in getting a good body, and making money but not in political influence or academia
Success is different for everyone,
thus steps taken are different
soooo ig
just rely on yourself

apparently philosophy rejected the idea of allah or smth
not sure tho...
read about that like 2 years ago
idk maybe. yea i read a book of Ghazali. Maybe he was in the era of Avicenna
Thats misconception ig , there were islamic philosphers
burned by Almoravid rulers in spain...
Aicenna, Ghazali, al Razi and many more ig

Matthews

<@&942391219206647828>
Thanks
<@&942391219206647828>
I started it but I stopped reading it cause there were too many weird bits. You’ll know what I mean when you see them. Otherwise, I’d say it’s pretty good.
ye berserk is hardcore sometimes
but i like how guts keep strugling with it and not giving up may it be rage, but he keeps forward
I like the story of it but there’s too much rap
Thanks

Hi
Has anyone read The Cruel prince by Holy black ?
yes! i read the trilogy
I can't remember where I saw it but somewhere online either on discord, or on his old blog post, or on a yt description James mentioned like an order of reading a few books that he'd recommended (essentialism, deep work, etc). does anyone know where and what that order is?
I think it was Atomic Habits, Deep Work and Can't hurt me in that order, it was from a video of him about top 3 book suggestions or something like that
