DEFFO ON THE LINEAR ALGEBRA! C++ is pretty good, and would have you prepped to learn any other tricky language, however, language wise it really depends on what you really wanna make.

But also, if you want to use game engines like unity, just work on C#, and if you wanna experiment with unreal engine, just watch video tutorials, because mainly unreal uses blueprints, which are like this:

Linear algebra is kinda... not 100% necessary tbh, but it really will make understanding a lot of things a lot easier.

As well as physics etc, and how to actually program physics. There are tons of videos on it! try find someone that explains things real simple

at the same time though, you don't really need to make a physics engine from scratch, you just need to understand how these elements work, and how you can use them in the context of a game.

Most game engines have a lot of that stuff sorted out.

Just really depends on what angle you want to approach things from.

If you aren't sure; my advice is to EXPERIMENT! watch random videos. Try godot, unity, gamemaker studio, unreal. HECK even C++ and SDL3 if you want to have things be more hands on and complex

just think of something cool thats interesting to ya and then try brute force through it; even though you don't know a thing. You wanna do xyz? google. youtube. textbooks. FIND OUT! look for examples. Try it all out.

Don't just do things because you want to learn it, do things because you have an idea, and to do that idea you're required to learn. Having something you want to do and something to work towards, like a little personal project (eg chess, or a racing game etc) will give you some sort of goal that you can actually break down into things you want to learn how to do, rather than it being a loose goal like "learn unreal/unity", cause that's easier to lose motivation for.

Think of something cool. Try everything you can to try get even one step closer to doing that cool thing

thats my biggest advice. Just run in a direction and you'll gain something, as well as satisfaction as you learn! :D

Though, it is hard knowing that early off. So experiment and learn things before you start your prep.

u need to point out what u actually need, u can do some of the same things on an ipad vs macbook with a keyboard extension but even then they are two different devices.
price and upgrade/repairability is also a big factor, i used to use a 80usd laptop a few months as my daily before upgrading the battery, screen, storage and touchpad and a new macbook air is 1000 usd, ist hard/expensive to repair and u cant upgrade it later on.
macbooks and ipads are nice machines tho with long battery lives and a really optimized OS becuase apple makes the software and hardware.
