ionic cargo
# obsidian cobalt Does anyone know what the first council of nicea is?

I’m Christian. It was a council held in Nicaea that addressed one of the core doctrines of the Christian faith and dispelled the heresies that were going around at the time.

The main point was that it established that Jesus Christ was fully God and fully Man, contrary to the heresy that His divinity was two natures.

This was important because belief in the Trinity (three persons one being) is the core believe that all non-heretical denominations of Christianity hold to. Ask a Catholic, Orthodox or (Bible believing) Protestant Christian and they all will say that Jesus is fully God and fully man.

ionic cargo

# obsidian cobalt Does anyone know what the first council of nicea is?

It was against a heresy called Arianism that was spreading and which attacked the divinity of Jesus Christ and it was defended in this council.

This council was held under Emperor Constantine the Great in 325. There were 3 views in this council which was Homo-ousies, Hetero-osious and Homoi- Ousious and Homo- Ousious view eventually won out which was in alllience with the historic teaching.

Further on the final ending of this council was done in 381 in 1st council of Constantinople

# idle spruce hello guys does anyone know something about heteronomous ethics from the point o...

Hobbes was a 17th-century English philosopher known for his political and ethical theories. He believed in a moral theory called ethical egoism, which can be considered a form of heteronomous ethics. Heteronomous ethics refers to an ethical system where moral principles or laws are imposed from an external source rather than being derived from an individual's own reasoning or autonomy.

According to Hobbes, human beings are fundamentally driven by self-interest and a desire to maximize their own well-being. He argued that morality arises out of a rational calculation of self-interest and the fear of the state of nature, which he famously described as "the war of all against all." In this state, life is solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.

Hobbes proposed that individuals enter into a social contract, surrendering some of their individual freedoms and rights to a central authority (the sovereign) in exchange for protection and security. This sovereign authority is responsible for creating and enforcing laws that govern society. The moral obligations of individuals arise from their agreement to abide by these laws for the sake of self-preservation and the avoidance of conflict.

In Hobbes' view, moral rules are not inherent in nature or derived from divine command but are established by the sovereign as a means to maintain social order and prevent chaos. Individuals are obligated to follow these rules because failure to do so would lead to the breakdown of the social contract and a return to the state of nature.

Therefore, from Hobbes' perspective, ethical behavior is heteronomous in nature, as moral principles are imposed externally by the sovereign or governing authority rather than being based on individual autonomy or intrinsic moral values.

guys, has any of you ever used Zotero?
I was a Mendeley user for many years, but since Elsevier bought it, it became trash for desktop users D: Then I just created a manual system to keep track of my bibliography.
Just downloaded Zotero, but I'm skeptic about it, since I built my own manual System (using Microsoft Word) - though I don't know how much it has been working better than any management tools 😛

#

(I'm posting in this sub-chat cause I think the usage of this apps might have a difference among science fields)

#

I have a friend who reccomended Zotero. I haven't had to use it yet, but it seems like it's really good for research and keeping a ton of stuff organized. I'm sure I'll be looking into it more down the line, but I haven't done more than briefly checking it out yet

#

I think it'll be super handy for my field of study, but so far in my undergrad, I haven't really needed to organize a ton of sources

stone scarab
#

I spent my whole day yesterday learning Zotero, and it's actually preeetty great!!!!!

#

(but, for greater usage, you really need to take some time to watch some videos of people who have been actually using it for years for research. AND: learning how to use tag instead of folders.)

#

at the end of my Master's program I'll come back to give my feedback on how great it worked 😛

# velvet tapir i have been using Zotero for probably around 6 years consistently

wooow! that's some time!! @velvet tapir i've got a lot of questions now aushusahs but I'll try not to bother you with this.
If you would comment on how well Zotero has served you in these past 6 years, how would you say it? I was never really consistent with my reading/note-taking systems, so each work I do I have to figure out a way of doing it. But it sucks that every time I have to start something new, I feel like I'm beginning from scratch.

#

The thing I learned about Zotero that made the most sense to me was NOT using folders to organize texts and works, but TAGS instead. This is a huuuuge improvement for me! Cause I can have the 10 files of the came article/book in different folders in my computer with different notes. Too much work and kinda useless.
Then I'm really invested in this tag system to organize my reading and notes

#

It has already shown great value!

velvet tapir
velvet tapir
# stone scarab The thing I learned about Zotero that made the most sense to me was NOT using fo...

I've experimented with either or, mostly I have kept just folders related to either a subject or specific work and pasted everything in there. I made e.g. a folder for my thesis and split it into subfolders for source types. I can't really say what works best for me there. I use tags for grouping themes in literature but I rarely end up using it that way, I think it might be too granular for my purposes since my studies have been very broad past few years.

#

the most value I've derived from zotero is in writing notes, marking text within the zotero pdf reader, extracting those notes and developing them into ideas/concepts/arguments later in obsidian

#

which eventually end up as content for any writing I do

stone scarab
#

I cannot thank you enough for your comments, @velvet tapir ❤️ reading your inside view and learning about your own methods to use it (which I'm certain have evolved throughout the years(, that's incredible! Thank you!!!

# hybrid sparrow hey, I have a history test in a month, I have 3 years of material to study and f...

First I would organize them by subject, put some labels and post-its, anything to help visualize exactly what I have. Then, I would try to crate a chronology and visualize all subjects in a map, and try to understand ones relevance to another just from what I remember. I would use a large paper to write and draw some notes and associations down. I'm sure that would help me assure the subjects I should prioritize to study better, and really dive deep into these ones. I would use these connections to create the flow of "what's next" to study. Then, throughout the month, I would update the chart I wrote/drew with anything that helps me remember what I learned.
Being History the subject of your exam, you should remember that you won't actually learn things only memorizing them. We're not computers. You should understand the facts importance to history and always associate with other facts, as nothing in history happens by chance.

Life is a beautiful feeling where we can enjoy each and every moment. We can see the beauty of nature through our eyes and hear the sound of rain. Life is about love; we can love our family and friends. It's a connection with the soul, where music notes play beautiful songs. Life is the beautiful way in which the sun rises and sets, the moon awakens at night, and the stars shine. Life is victory only after defeat. There are a few tears and a few smiles. If there's sorrow today, there will be joy tomorrow. Life is an abode where one moment there is pain from a wound, and the next moment there is a shade of happiness. In every moment, there is a new song.

Imperialism and Fascism are distinct political ideologies and practices, though they have sometimes intersected historically. Here’s a comparison:

Imperialism:

  1. Definition: Imperialism is the policy or practice of extending a country's power and influence through colonization, use of military force, or other means. It involves the domination of one country or territory by another.

  2. Goals: The primary goals of imperialism include economic gain, access to resources, strategic advantage, and national prestige.

  3. Characteristics:

    • Establishment of colonies or protectorates.
    • Economic exploitation of the dominated territory.
    • Cultural assimilation or suppression of local cultures.
    • Military and political control over the territory.
  4. Historical Examples:

    • The British Empire’s control over India.
    • French colonization of parts of Africa and Southeast Asia.
    • The Spanish Empire’s expansion in the Americas.

Fascism:

  1. Definition: Fascism is a far-right, authoritarian ultranationalistic political ideology that promotes dictatorial power, forcible suppression of opposition, and strong regimentation of society and the economy.

  2. Goals: The primary goals of fascism include the creation of a unified national community, the revival of national strength and purity, and often the expansion of territory to include all ethnic or culturally similar groups.

  3. Characteristics:

    • Centralized autocratic government led by a dictatorial leader.
    • Strong nationalist and often racist ideology.
    • Suppression of political dissent and civil liberties.
    • Militarization of society and aggressive foreign policy.
    • Corporatism and state control of the economy.
  4. Historical Examples:

    • Benito Mussolini’s Italy.
    • Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Germany.
    • Francisco Franco’s Spain (though some debate whether it was strictly fascist).

Sure, studying research papers can be challenging but also rewarding. Here are some tips to help your friend navigate through psychology research papers:

  1. Understand the Structure:

    • Abstract: Summarizes the entire paper.
    • Introduction: Provides background information and the research question or hypothesis.
    • Methods: Describes how the study was conducted.
    • Results: Presents the findings.
    • Discussion: Interprets the findings, discusses implications, and suggests future research.
    • References: Lists all the sources cited in the paper.
  2. Read in Stages:

    • First Pass: Skim the paper to get a general idea. Read the abstract, introduction, and conclusion.
    • Second Pass: Read the entire paper more thoroughly. Pay attention to the methodology and results.
    • Third Pass: Focus on understanding the details and the nuances. Look up any terms or concepts you don’t understand.
  3. Take Notes:

    • Summarize key points in your own words.
    • Note down important terms and definitions.
    • Write questions or thoughts that come to mind.
  4. Understand the Methodology:

    • Pay attention to how the research was conducted.
    • Understand the sample size, variables, and controls used in the study.
    • Consider the strengths and limitations of the methodology.
  5. Analyze the Results:

    • Look at the data presented in tables, figures, and graphs.
    • Understand the statistical methods used.
    • Determine whether the results support the hypothesis.
  6. Evaluate the Discussion:

    • Consider the authors’ interpretation of the results.
    • Think about alternative explanations.
    • Reflect on the implications of the findings.
  7. Use Additional Resources:

    • Look for reviews or summaries of the paper online.
    • Use textbooks or other academic sources to understand complex concepts.
    • Discuss the paper with peers or mentors.
  8. Stay Organized:

    • Keep a digital folder.

Breaking into the corporate world with a humanities background is totally possible bro First focus on transferable skills like communication critical thinking and problem-solving because companies value those big time .
Next build up some business-relevant knowledge Take free or cheap courses on platforms like Coursera or LinkedIn Learning to learn basics like marketing project management or data analysis .
Networking is also key Start connecting with people on LinkedIn join groups and attend events to get your foot in the door Internships or entry-level roles in HR marketing or admin can be great starting points and once you’re in it’s easier to grow and move up.

lapis iris
# worn crystal So I’m like really thinking of like am I not studying enough

hy man law school is no joke and if the pass rate is 30% it’s not just you it’s the system being tough on purpose The key is studying smart not just studying more Here’s what might help you
First focus on past papers and case law Most law exams test how well you apply legal principles not just memorization so practice writing answers under timed conditions
Second simplify your notes Law books are heavy but you don’t need to remember everything Make case summaries mind maps and flowcharts to connect concepts faster
Third join a study group Breaking down legal arguments with others helps a lot and sometimes they’ll catch things you missed
Fourth talk to seniors or professors If the pass rate is that low find people who passed and ask how they studied The strategy matters as much as the content
Lastly take care of yourself law school is a marathon If you’re burning out no amount of study will help Stay consistent and focus on understanding over memorization

those were introduced at my university this year. i haven’t used any ai for my work but i still have to submit an ai statement for every assignment that requires it. for those that used it, they have to state they did and show proof of the prompts they used, why they used it and how the ai answers helped them in their learning

#

i think it’s good if you’re struggling because sometimes professors aren’t reachable, tutoring services can be expensive, etc. whereas ai is free and much more easily and widely accessible

#

it’s also definitely not going anywhere lol

#

better to learn how to utilise if it can benefit people’s learning

if you are willing to be an academic weapon or contribute something, I would say it'll lead nowhere but lessen the exercise for your brain, which is the major part of being better, regardless of the impact it has on society and the earth. But if you are satisfied with (and aware of) contingent results, then sure. I, personally, see it causes more harm than good since I still see the advantage of being faithful to humanity, but it could be because we are from different circles.

using ai only leads to “nowhere” and “lessens” the exercise of your brain if you don’t use it correctly and use it too frequently. if you know how to use it right and use it appropriately, as well as only during the times you truly need it, then it’s a useful learning tool if anything. like a teacher would, it can give you hints when you’re stuck and lead you to the right direction.

i’m curious what you mean by being faithful to humanity? and coming from different circles?

Long story short, my professor and adviser are all helpful, plus the professional is accessible. they all provide better advice since it's from hands-on experience thus I don't really agree when you said they could be replaceable. And if you are talking about using it as a search engine, or grammar checking, it's fine, I'm not against technology. But I'm talking about taking it as a part of your work, like summarizing, drafting, or criticizing. You may see it differently from me, but I see the major differences between AI-made/Al-used work and human-made work, which I find the latter more remarkable. There will be the sense you smell that AI couldn't reach, especially when it comes to the humanities field.

ahh i see, i understand where you’re coming from. that makes sense. i’m glad you have the right tools and support system to do well in your studies. although i believe that should be the case for everyone, it isn’t. so even if i’m in a similar situation as you, it’s just my belief that everyone should have access to these things. therefore i’m not going to discredit someone’s work or intellect if they decide to use ai as a tool, given that they used it appropriately, as i’m not aware of everyone’s circumstances. i also don’t recall saying that professors are replaceable. i believe i said professors are sometimes not reachable and ai is more accessible so it makes sense why people would resort to using ai.

but otherwise i do agree with you. i’m not advocating for allowing ai to completely do your work for you.* there’s no good in that. human-made work is also often more respectable and i do believe that especially applies in the humanities field. i just think i’d have to be more specific in the ways and circumstances that ai is used, in which i believe it’s acceptable— at least in order for us to have a mutual understanding regarding that.

Could anyone familiar with the history of russia and the soviet union explain what were the political differences between the Bolsheviks and Petrograd Soviet in 1917? From what I'm studying the petrograd soviet was mainly mensheviks and socialist revolutionary parties, which I assumed the Bolsheviks would support? But then when the bolsheviks attempted a revolution in July the petrograd state worked against it?

The bolsheviks were radical. They wanted immediate and quick transitions to communism. Which meant that they wanted to completely eradicate the provisional government that was in place, after the February resolution (which happened after the removal of the tsar). They wanted the rule of the proletariat and they wanted it fast. Complete eradication of the capitalist system and the introduction of a powerful centralised power to maintain the state was much to their liking. Its basic communism stuff.

The petrograd was more into the slow transition into socialism (not communism) and wanted to take the provisional governments help and support and wanted to be a means to convey the demands and interests of the working class. Like you said, the petrograd was more like a collective body that had various factions within it, including the bolsheviks. But eventually the bolsheviks gained a much bigger influence.

When you look at revolution and the concept of a complete change of systems in a particular society, there is always one side that is more cooperative and want a smooth transition and wish to take their time with optimising things whereas another group ends up way more radical and often turn violent and have an extremist agenda. In this case the ptetrograd soviet is the former while the bolsheviks the latter at this point in time.

Coming to the July days, it wasn't planned to be a bolshevik agitation. Yes they took leadership and supported it but it initially just started as a form of protest by the workers and soldiers and mostly without a clear leadership. The bolsheviks had definitely planned a protest but that was for July 4th which was supposed to be peaceful, while this event took place on the 3rd.

Coming to why there was a divide, I've mentioned above that the petrograd soviet wanted a smooth transition and a peaceful one, as much as possible. But seeing as how the bolsheviks took the blame or rather, responsibility for the protest, they weren't happy

#

Because it stood opposite to what they had in mind. A violent protest was under no circumstances acceptable by petrograd soviet standards at that point in time.

However as things go, the bolsheviks eventually did end up gaining major influence like I've said above and that's what led to the radicalisation of the petrograd soviet as well.

I hope that makes sense

You are an angel and a life saver thank youuu. I think I understand, so while both the Bolsheviks and members of Petrograd soivet were both left wing they were looking to achieve political and social aims in completely different ways which caused a conflict when the Bolsheviks joined the July days protest. Your paragraph before last makes so much sense, i suppose the bolshevik's attempt at a more violent overthrow of Russia seemed like a threat of a return to autocracy the Petrograd soviet....right?

Thank you again🫶🫶

bolsheviks were proper marxist leninists they led the revolution through an armed vanguard party (lenin’s idea) and their end goal was dictatorship of the working class led by the vanguard party whereas Mensheviks were reformists they also wanted a revolution but not the working class one they argued that for russia to become socialist they first needed a bourgeois revolution to make russia developed enough to transition to socialism

#

other key difference is bolsheviks wanted a small group of pro revolutionary organisation where menshevik wanted broader organisation

#

another thing to note that Mensheviks had many splits in their timeline

its kinda nuanced

Je ne sais pas si vous avez le choix, mais si vous devez choisir entre une compte rendu et une production ouverte sa veut dire Vous utilisez votre propre créativité et vos propres mots, see which one suits you the most and get to know what is the structure each one needs to have learn it well see examples if you have a teacher try to write productions and show him to correct for you, like this you'd get very good at it, and for social studies I'm sorry but I don't know what you study in it exactly nor I know how to give you any advice in it, I hope I helped in anything, good luck
