Black Wash Weathering

I want to do a black wash to make my Armorer chest and back plate look weathered. What type of paint should I use?

I would use acrylics mixed with water and use black and some browns as it will look more realistic dirt.
I normally clear-coat the prop before weathering as that way if I don’t like it it’s easier to wash it off and start again
