Is this decent enough for Starboost? Only thing is this white I haven’t seen used. Normally seeing the rust oleum. The Rustoleum as spitting issues and is much more expensive and harder to find.

How’s this color spread?

Also any notable primer that should be used outside of the sandable filler primer or is this decent enough after softening and smoothing the primer.

The filler primer is a primer itself so you don’t need an extra primer. Since you’re using a 2k clear I highly suggest montana gold goldchrome if you have the money for it. It looks amazing. I’ve heard good things about 2K not giving too much dull effect on the metallic color but haven’t had a chance to try that myself. I’m making a full mk39 suit and I loved the montana on it. Only trying to figure out a way to protect it otherwise I’ll be using an airbrush. But that should be good if you want a decent looking mk39

#

This is the color I get from Montana

cobalt stirrup
#

What did you use and layer under that gold?

#

This is Krylon that Remy did

#

Can’t seem to find a seller for the gold chrome Montana

cobalt stirrup
#

Apparently Montana gold chrome isn’t available in California 😭 @bright pike

#

@onyx needle I know you advocate for them a ton. Worth spending 35$ to get a can? And if so tips on layering it?

#

Seems to be my only local way to get it.

#

Unless I go with Krylon or go with Rustoleum like frank did

Cali don’t have any for sell had to go resell 😦

#

Tried

buoyant wren
#

Dam, that sucks

#

I wouldn’t drop 35$ a can. Not with my budget. But it’s an amazing gold for sure

cobalt stirrup
#

It’s a shelf piece anyway just worried about open and close damage to the paint 😂

onyx needle
cobalt stirrup
#

Yeah I just had Apple Cash stuck in limbo and only spent 15$ out of pocket so said screw it

#

You know if this stuff will play nice with it

#

I have a can

#

Went with the semi gloss white Rustoleum, Oil Rubbed Black for hexagons Krylon, the gold Montana and this 2k

onyx needle
cobalt stirrup
#

The 2k only lasts so long I hear and I saw you recommend doing a clear over the gloss black first.

#

Think a wet sand with 800 on the gloss black before the Montana would work?

onyx needle
#

I used it on this .
Yeah the 2k you get 24 hours I think, and I have seen some great results with a clear layer on the black, but it’s not essential.
Wet sanding that high will help, you want it almost reflective.

cobalt stirrup
#

Would you say 800/1000/1200 on the black would be ideal then?

onyx needle
#

I would go with 800 and see how you go, the other grits will help but sometimes I feel it’s too much and dulls the gloss black, just wet sand and dry it off before going up a grit. 800 should be good enough to de-nib and get any dust caught in the surface off.

cobalt stirrup
#

Is 800 TOO much? Or you think that works I’m always worried to sand finishing paints lol

onyx needle
#

I think 800 will be fine, as you are t looking to take much of anything off at all just looking to smooth it out and polish it.
I am sure Vaultfox on YouTube did a tutorial on how she did a mando helmet and went through the same process, let me check

Any times I try it says not available to ship to California

#

What grit did you start at in the gloss black?

marsh jacinth
#

Did you mean for wetsanding? I started with 1000 -> 3000 -> 5000

cobalt stirrup
#

And after primer I assume you hit it with 400/800

marsh jacinth
#

Oh after filler primer? I only use up to 240 dry sanding

cobalt stirrup
#

Only wet sanded the gloss black ya?

marsh jacinth
#

yeah for the extra smooth surface because the krylon black primer goes on really well already

#

I meant the gloss black

cobalt stirrup
#

And for the rest of the helmet did you wet sand?

marsh jacinth
#

no I did a special treat for the faceplate because it's gold and I wanted it nice

#

the other I just went over with a 1k clear coat

#

I will eventually wet sand and polish it later on though

cobalt stirrup
#

For sure I plan to 2k clear the whole helmet but I’ll def gloss black and wet sand before the gold.

marsh jacinth
#

I don't think it will make that much difference because it's a bright white color

cobalt stirrup
#

Did you wet sand the gold pre clear

marsh jacinth
cobalt stirrup
#

Got it ty

marsh jacinth
#

I heard rumors that 2k doesn't clear it as bad but please do not use 1k clear on the montana because it dulls it 100%

#

looks like bronze almost

cobalt stirrup
#

Wonder if anyone has 2k the Montana

marsh jacinth
#

I've searched everywhere but there wasn't any video or picture, just reddit comments or youtube video coments

cobalt stirrup
#

Maybe I’ll spoon test just sucked the V 2k only has a short use span

#

I’ll just have a Montana gold spoon ready when I plan to clear the whole helmet

marsh jacinth
#

yeah but once you open the 2k it has a time limit for like 2 days

cobalt stirrup
#

That’s what I mean I’ll clear coat the spoon and give it half a day to cure

#

If it’s okay I’ll do whole helmet

marsh jacinth
#

hey man take the risk for the team lol

cobalt stirrup
#

I might 😭

#

Still weeding through coding issue and installing the servos

#

All paint comes in by Monday so I’ll let you know

marsh jacinth
#

heck yeah, thanks man

#

I got a kustom kanz 2k sitting right here just waiting for the right time

buoyant wren
#
#

There’s this brand also, the 2 parts mix as you spray so no shelf life. Amazon reviews are mixed though

onyx needle

Just worried about adding the 2k on Montana since no one seems to have done it

onyx needle
cobalt stirrup
#

Unfort 2k clear only last a short time so testing paint layers wouldnt be easy I think

subtle eagle
#

Best thing to do it just clear it with what you got. Even if it reacts (which I don't think it will) it's not the end of the world. Just sand it down and redo. I had to repaint my whole jaw piece.

cobalt stirrup
#

did white layer. had a single drip line I got out with 1000 grit and recoated. When handling I realized I left a finger print (which I also 1000 grit got out) next coat is currently drying.

#

BUT worrys me to tape off and do gloss black and gold. Should I give more than 24 hours for it to cure before taping over it? Its rustoleum white

buoyant wren
cobalt stirrup
#

inevitebly will need to be touched, would you say the tackyness wont matter taping over for next area?
