Steadily making progress. Couple days of sanding and another of electronics. Ordering paint ahead of time and want to minimize cost waste. Siding the same gold and clear coat frank did. I don’t see an under coat listed by him on his links. Would this black work before the gold or is there a known one used? Appreciate the support!

Hey @hidden sphinx, thank you for contributing to this forum.

A black base makes metallics pop, so that or a dark grey will work, you can get lighter shades with white but it all depends on how many coats of gold you use as with enough coats the base doesn’t really matter.
With the black in the image above work out fine?
I’ve never used that one, but as it’s the same brand of the gold it should work, best to do a small test first just to check.
I used that black as base under my gold. Worked perfectly fine for me
I used the same paints and it came out good
this black under this gold? the 2x cover threw me off wasnt too sure
assume you also clear coated it after? Do you know if you need to wet sand the color layer pre coat or does that matter?
None of that
Just primer, gloss black, gold
Don’t clear the gold unless you’ve tested some out on spoons of failed prints because most times clearing the gold makes it turn brown
I tested dupli-color clear over that same gold and it definitely dulled a little bit. It also yellowed my white pieces.
I ended up going with a true 2-part 2k clear on the whole helmet and love the outcome. The whites didn't yellow, and the gold didn't dull.
this was what Frank used on his MK39 is why I liked it. the fractal shimmer it gives is nice
I did wet same all of my color coats before moving on to the next coat. Whether it mattered or not in the long run, IDK. I am very happy with the result, though.
His video is why I got the pearl Dupli-color. Ended up not using it for the above reasons.
oooo so probably just use over the hexagon segment then and use the 2k clear for the rest you think?
I really like the shimmer it can give
This is the clear I used. It's what I'll use going forward as well.

should play well with the gold and white im using ya?
Yep
Once you mix the two parts of this clear it has roughly a 48 hour shelf life
Correct, have to make sure you can get everything coated within a day or so. It's not something that can sit on a shelf, used for multiple projects. I cleared my whole helmet within a couple of hours.
Mix the two parts? Is it not just a single can?
It’s one can, but with two parts to it, there is an activation canister in the can and once you set that to go you have a limited time to use it.
In my understanding this isn’t a clear. This is an effect on a clear coated surface. In Frank’s video, I believe he used 1K clear coat (this will dull the shine of your gold) on his suit and then went over the hexagon parts with the clear effex. He said that it only has an effect on the darker color that’s why he didn’t tape off the white
Maybe I’ll just go with the 2k clear then
I just bought some kustom kanz 2k clear coat today, hoping it won't dull the gold much. Though, if you have access it'll be so much easier to handle gold
