Having a power issue with the tablet that is running octoprint, OTG cable connected to the TABLET will establish a connection with the printer, but will not charge it!

yeah you shouldnt charge your tablet through your printer...

#

you need a stronger power source.

clear cobalt
#

no no im not charging THROUGH the printer

clear cobalt
# cloud mural yeah you shouldnt charge your tablet through your printer...

ok so heres how the entire thing is working

Power brick > microusb cable > OTG cable ---- USB = TABLET
I--- micro usb cable to printer

WORKS. without charging

Power brick > microusb cable > OTG cable ---- USB = cable to PRINTER
I--- micro usb cable TABLET

doesnt work, establishes charge however, no connection to printer

..

cloud mural
#

sounds like maybe your otg cable doesnt have the data pins on it

cloud mural
#

no... you need to have a splitter.. split the 4 usb pins to the two power pins black and red... and the 2 data pins go to the printer white and green

clear cobalt
#

uhhh

#

i did not understand

cloud mural
#

usb cable has four wires in it... red white green and black... red and black supply power... green and white are the data

clear cobalt
#

ok

#

makes sense so far

cloud mural
#

does the tablet only have the one usb?

clear cobalt
#

tablet only has 1 microusb slot

#

no usb sadly

cloud mural
#

kk.. i would take a micro usb cable... and strip the wires... then take the printer usb and strip that... and the power usb strip that... black and red go to power.. white and green go to data

clear cobalt
#

ok so theres 4 wires from each cable (3 cables)

cloud mural
#

yup

clear cobalt
#

so i connect the tablet to the power brick

#

but in your case

#

you want me to cut the green and white cable

#

and connect that to the printer

cloud mural
#

this might be too much for you

clear cobalt
#

i understand it but i cant say it right

cloud mural
#

you are essentially making a Y cable

clear cobalt
#

yeah i get it

#

is there a safer method?

#

i am playing with electricity here

cloud mural
#

could probably buy a cable...

clear cobalt
#

so a 3 way micro usb connection?

#

would a single data and charge and a charge variant work?

clear cobalt
cloud mural
#

no cuz you dont want the power to feed from the printer to the tablet

#

itll drain the printer

clear cobalt
#

would that fit?

#

im confused

cloud mural
#

you said micro usb

#

hang on

#

yeah im not seeing what you need on amazon

clear cobalt
#

welp

#

there might be an alternative way

#

what if i could split the charging port on the tablet?

cloud mural
#

thats what i was trying to say but i dont want to be responsible for the failure

clear cobalt
#

no no i mean with an cable

cloud mural
#

i dont think so

#
#

maybe something like this

clear cobalt
#

but thats usb c oof

#

imma be honest i feel like your method is the only possible way

cloud mural
#

might be your tablet though.. shuts off data while charging

clear cobalt
#

i mean i am making a video on this

#

i dont wanna like encourage power hijacking

cloud mural
#

its not power hijacking

clear cobalt
#

and thats with the correct way of using the OTG Y splitter Cable to the tablet

#

the only way left is a 30 feet Microusb cord

#

going from my computer to the printer in the basement

#

hmm well

#

what if i used my modem/router for this fix?

#

argh well even if i did that all the money i spent on the phone holder and cables would be a waste

clear cobalt
#

Just to make sure we understand it, this is the charging configuration

#

And this is the data configuration

#

Both supply power to printer

clear cobalt
#

ok so @cloud mural turns out its just the tablet, i tried it on my moms older phone temp, it worked perfectly with data and charging!

#

possible hypothesis, larger screen = more energy, therefore energy spent =/= to energy gained

odd lily
#

I bought a cable thst said it could charge and send data like that but didn't I think it doesn't work they way it sounds like it should I ened up using the wireless charging feature on my old phone instead

frail ridge
#

I made my Octoprint from a raspberry pi

#

4

clear cobalt
#

oh wow why didnt i think of that?

#

OH wait its because a rasberry pi is 200 dollars
