Hey pretty people, I've been meaning to ask you.
I'm planning on printing an Iron Man suit and I have some 3D printing sturdiness PTSD. I'll probably use PETG, but since I want the suit to survive if I e.g. trip and hit the ground, or walk some stairs. I thought of using fiberglass to make it more sturdy. What are your experiences with that?

So far, I have thought of two ways:

  1. Casting the whole suit in resin (never worked with resin, but supposedly it is hella sturdy)

  2. As mentioned above, fiberglass the heck out of the suit

Let me know!

I would use carbon fiber but having worked with it that sounds like a horrible idea

Use Bondo fiberglass with Bondo fiberglass resin

To explain, some years ago a friend of mine printed me some swords for Geralt and an hour before the contest, as I was sheathing one of them, the crossguard snapped off.. then again, it was PLA with about 25% infill

Pls plus is better and stronger

Also what are you using to fuse parts together

You’re going to have to make sure you account for the extra bulk but if you plan on falling in it I still don’t think it’s going to hold up PeTG brakes also

But something to think about if you’re going to do it anyway is make sure you use an epoxy resin and not a polyester resin
epoxy isn’t as brittle
I carbon fiber is just as easy to work with as fiberglass but it’s not as nasty

No use soldiering it has a much stronger bond if you use pla or pla plus it shouldn’t create any harmful fumes

I figure that if it's sturdy enough, it may still pass off as battle damage

Sure would be cool with carbon fiber haha

Well it is a long term goal anyways, I can't really buy 20 rolls of filament just like that haha

#

I will look into it, but I use an Ender 3

Are you in the states?

Hmm I don’t know if any filament deals there unfortunately.
But resin is usually pretty expensive too

Yep, a long time goal going on there. But thanks for the effort

I had someone print something for me in Inland Strong PLA, I think it might be new and a step up in strength from PLA+. I liked how it felt, didn't seem brittle. I haven't personally printed anything with it though to know how hard it is to work with.

Looks sturdy enough, what exactly was that? If you have a link, that would be great

That was just Inland Pla+
If I share a link it’ll be to US Amazon or a us based store so I’m not sure it’ll help
Sunlu and esun brands have been similar though

But the part was just a piece of an iron man mk3 faceplate

Ah, thanks! As I mentioned above, I don't have good experience with anything which has "PLA" in its name, but I may have gotten a bit scammed haha
What infill and wall thickness is that?

10% infill, .4mm nozzle, 3 walls
Printed at 215/60C
