Try using warm and cold colours shading use pitch black for certain pieces but not every piece will look good with a dark pitch black colour and or low opacity black shading
Airbrush soft shading is alright but it looks weird I suggest trying other smooth brushes!

Sprite edit of a pokefusion. Quality is definitely a tad fried, so I hope this doesn't break the "no low quality sprite edits" Rule. I had to recover the file twice, my computer was probably hot enough to fry bacon throughout the process lol 🥲
Despite it all, this thing survived, so I might as well show it off!
Time taken was an hour and a half, most of that was spent changing the fur on the chest and adjusting a few other minor details to fit aerodactyls head shape better.
