Hey, im not sure what happened but after 400 hours of finally completing all the missions on icarus my steam decided to fail to sync. i loaded the game and it askes me to make a new character! i say nope turn it off and try fix the sync... only to find its updated my cloud save with my blank new save files.... -.- i have spent many many hours editing the profile.json to unlock the missions again as im not willing to go through it all again and i need my tech for my missions with my friends.

can somebody either help me with what i need to maybe donate there profile.json to me if you have completed it or at least close. i can redo some missions i just dont want all of them again. i have all DLC. i just got my hoverbike and didnt get to use it! 😭

Okay first you do not need a donation. The game is saved on your PC and then backed up to the Steam Cloud. So you still have the copy of it on your PC unless you deleted that. Steam Cloud from what I have heard is only suppose to be updated when you shut the game down. Of course I only know what I have read in here as I have disabled Steam Cloud. Like everything else Steam related it is not reliable, my internet has gone down too many times as well then I can not play too many games because the cloud goes out of Sync.

I mean you can always start the new character and give yourself all the currency to make the missions stupid easy. Outside of that, not sure. I have done almost none of the missions so can not help you there.

i checked. there are no backups. if you start playing with cloud that is the only files on your computer and they are basically overwrite when steam sycs, i spent hours trying to get my files back. i have a damn good internet and it never drops so i always use cloud as i have 2 pcs and a laptop, its easier for me if its automatically synced between them. i have never had an issue with cloud personally i love it.

i had ALL missions done... i literally finished the final mission in the final DLC when i lost my data. and even if i cheats to the high heavens it would still take me weeks or more to do the what 200+ missions on there..... the thought of doing that actually makes me want to uninstall the game lol some of them were a real ballache

As Scooby said, the game always first saves your progress locally, and will sync to Steam if Steam cloud sync is enabled.

Now for some reason Steam decided its version on the cloud was different from the version you had locally.
So it asked you which version you wanted to keep.
You chose to keep the cloud version, so Steam did exactly what you told it to do: Overwrite your local file with the one it had in his cloud.
This action is irreversible.

Next time when Steam asks whether you want to keep the local or the cloud version, always keep the local version!
The only reason why you want to use the cloud version is when you change computers (and there is no local version) or when you've re-installed your PC (and did not back up your old files).

Personally I regularly (voluntarily!) start new characters on new Open Worlds and redo all missions on the new Open World (including the Great Hunts missions and everything).
It's not too bad.
It gives me the opportunity to try out different character builds and different base locations and styles.
But hey, that's me...

it didnt ask me on steam cloud thats the problem, it usually does i just said unable to sync. and loaded the new save, then when the cloud saves looked like they were working i loaded up and still a new save. my steam save folder had almost nothing in it, no backups or anything.

i dont mind starting the missions over, i do also do this, it was just that i spent a month blasting the missions to unlock the tech to play with my friends on open world and suddenly i lost most of the tech we needed. we wanted to try the hoverbikes and i just unlocked them for us and lost the save.

Did you by any chance start the game as Administrator?
Or if you usually start the game as Administrator, did you now start it as 'normal user'?
Because this will affect your SteamID.

Preferably Steam and Icarus should run in the same security context.
And since it's better to run Icarus under your own username (and not as Administrator), it's best to not run Steam as Administrator either - although I acknowledge there could be reasons to run Steam as Administrator.

Go to %localappdata%\Icarus\Saved\PlayerData
Check whether or not there's multiple folders there (usually with a string of numbers - this is your Steam ID)
If there are multiple folders there, check all folders for the existence of Icarus profile files (most importantly Profiles.json)

If you open the Profile.json you should easily see whether or not it's the one with your characters in.

If you do find the correct file, first of all make a copy of your current Profile.json, disable Steam Cloud sync and copy the correct file over the current file.
Start the game and see if your characters have returned.

In the future to avoid losing too much game progress, I'd suggest regularly making a copy of the PlayerData<SteamID> folder
So in case something like this happens again, you can restore the file(s) from the last copy you made.

yeah sadly i have done this, i used to make backups of my saves but i guess i got too comfortable and stopped due to a long time without issues. the files were all replaced with the blank data
