I've had Icarus since November of last year. I have nearly 30hrs played on THIS pc. One day it just started crashing to desktop from the loading screen after trying to load into a mission or world. There is no crash report.

Things I have tried:

-validating files on steam

-deleting all worlds and characters and launching new ones

-uninstalling/reinstalling AND deleting any existing files while uninstalled

-updating

-following EVERY step of this tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doOhYNR--3A&t=435s

Please help

EDITED TO ADD

  • I also upgraded my RAM from 8gb to 32gb

There wasn't one. It just crashed to desktop with nothing popping up.

It could be the amount of ram that is the issue. Here are the listed system requirements for the game

#

Minimum:
Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
OS: Windows 10 (64-bit versions)
Processor: Intel i5 8400
Memory: 16 GB RAM
Graphics: Nvidia GTX 1060 6GB
DirectX: Version 11
Network: Broadband Internet connection
Storage: 70 GB available space
Recommended:
Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
OS: Windows 10 (64-bit versions)
Processor: Intel i7-9700
Memory: 32 GB RAM
Graphics: NVIDIA RTX 3060ti
DirectX: Version 11
Network: Broadband Internet connection
Storage: 70 GB available space

Maybe something has changed that is now causing the game to use more ram than before.

That's frustrating

The game requirements clearly state 16GB RAM is required.

I understand. I figured since it ran fine before, it wouldn't just become an issue

I am not a DEV only a player with loads of hours played. Maybe someone else can confirm this.

umm yeah Icarus will sit steady at 7gb of RAM used in the title screens, on top of that what other programs are running to use up some of that RAM...Chrome's a terrible hog, Discord isn't too bad at 1gb but when you add those in. Running 7gb easy before dropping down means your poor laptop was pushing itself hard

Icarus is quite memory hungry; both for RAM (system memory) and VRAM (video memory)
With 16GB RAM Icarus will indeed easily use 7GB RAM
With 32GB RAM it'll use more
With 64GB RAM it'll use even more
But, more RAM is better
More VRAM is even better still

What you could try (assuming you haven't done so yet) is running your prospect on a Dedicated Server, to take away some of the (memory) load from your PC
Or try to start a new prospect (to rule out potential issues with your current prospect)
The longer you play a prospect, the bigger the prospect file becomes
The more data in the prospect file, the more compute (CPU and memory) the game will require to run your prospect

Since you're playing on a laptop I wonder, does your laptop have dedicated VRAM or is it shared memory?
Because if it's shared, it'll use RAM to act as VRAM - this'll reduce the amount of RAM available to the system (and the game running on it)
Also, in general RAM is slower to access from the GPU than dedicated VRAM; so there's another potential bottleneck
