The mud flaps in front of the tires are because dirt and mud and stuff gets thrown forward as well as backwards

"Cleaner buses for all: whether your district is ready to drive #electric, or a propane or natural gas bus better suits your needs, we are here to help. #BlueBird is the leader in low- and #zeroemission school buses with more than 20,000 #propane, natural gas, and #electric powered buses in operation today."

20k out of the 180k or so buses currently on the road. It really does show that many of companies and districts don't have the funds to buy or operate alternate fuel school buses.

Idk tho you’d have to jbeam those, which would probably be a little difficult

Some of them should be out of sync like irl, on older buses anyway

the question now is

top mount

or bottom mount

lemme make a mockup

All of the above, if you’re making all different buses

I'd go bottom mount, since most school buses tend to follow that

solar crow

Fs65 top mount, bluebirds and IC bottom mount, flat nose buses pantograph bottom mount

That pantograph wiper system might be complicated though.

Cause you’d have to do the linkages between each arm, connecting it to the blade

This is a body on frame vehicle right?

solar crow
#

All school buses are body on frame

#

Technically they’re body on truck chassis

paper hearth
#

So the body can separate from the frame in a crash then

solar crow
#

It’s supposed to be that way for safety reasons. Might not look that way but it does help lesson deaths

#

Same with the black lines, they’re called rub rails. They keep the body from collapsing

sly briar
paper hearth
sturdy pumice
# sly briar does yalls buses be using manual transmissions? american buses havent used manua...

It depends. On big cities, the rear engined City buses are mostly automatic, although the front engined ones are mostly manuals. For the Coaches, it depends from the frame manufacturer and the coach size. Scanias and Volvos are basically all Opticruise and I-Shift (automated manuals). Mercedes, on the other hand, sells some coach frames with manuals but optional Powershift transmissions (automated manual too), but their high end frames are Powershift standard. Small cities, usually have their city bus fleet made of mainly front engined buses, so mostly manual too. Although, until the 2000s basically all buses and coaches were manual, apart from some automated ones (but they were rare, since their shiflogic usually wasn't very logical, and they usually burnt more fuel)

Compartmentalization doesn’t work when the bus is sideways

#

In terms of safety, most states require lap belts on all new school buses. The tech that’s in your car is also implemented in the bus as well, but that’s at district discretion. Meaning they decide what’s on the spec sheet

jagged scroll
#

I honestly love the feeling of being in a big bus with no seat belts, even if in a crash i die, just the gforces are cool

sturdy pumice
#

But it still doesn't explain why the bodies' design is the same as in the 70's

jagged scroll
#

cost

solar crow
#

The black lines on the sides for instance, they’re also part of structural safety. Without those, the body can collapse during a collision

jagged scroll
#

it's the same for seatbelts

solar crow
sturdy pumice
solar crow
#

🤦‍♀️

jagged scroll
#

no, it's just really big, thin, and long, so it naturally creates weak points

solar crow
#

The rub rails are there for the structural integrity of the bus, just like how SUVs and minivans have lines going down the roof

sturdy pumice
#

So you are saying that to be safe, a bus need to look more like this

solar crow
#

Precisely

sturdy pumice
#

And less like this?

#

Let's pretend that the silver bus doesn't have the other two doors

solar crow
#

Take the bluebird for example, they’re pretty much framed like a house

fathom path
#

Like this

solar crow

I was trying to send just that

#

Lmao

#

School buses might look like unsafe giant rolling yellow twinkies, but I can only count a few instances where a bus crash took the lives of everyone onboard

peak sparrow
#

EU buses hold impacts well too

solar crow
#

EU has different laws than the states and Canada

peak sparrow

Watch this, it might help you understand. https://youtu.be/6pT8AL4n3Ow?si=lwsTyHfOgSQLPU7m

Thanks for watching, sorry again about the visual glitches I'm working on upgrading my computer. Real quick a couple of things I need to add:
Transit or cab-over style school buses existed and were used prior to the 80s but this decade is when they really took off in popularity, hence why I waited until that point in the video to mention them.
...

▶ Play video
sturdy pumice
solar crow
#

I’ve said this three times now, the body design hasn’t changed over the last 5 decades because it doesn’t need to

#

It’s really not that deep tbh

#

Until you actually ride or even DRIVE one, you won’t actually understand

sturdy pumice
#

I mean, Bus design in general didn't need to change, but it did, almost everywhere in the world.

peak sparrow
#

It's normal for it to change

#

Nothing can truly stay entirely the same

#

Yes you can hold some details, but never entirely

solar crow
#

EU has stricter laws when it comes to public transportation, school buses aren’t for public transportation. They’re for kids. They’re built for kids and the drivers behind them.

peak sparrow
#

We have School buses too, but in some areas they are rarer than public transport

#

In most areas*

solar crow
#

Now I agree that there is some things that need to be changed in bus manufacturing, for starters there needs to be a driver airbag in the steering wheel, to protect the driver. The driver is at a much higher risk from a fatality because of the lack of an airbag

#

I know there’s some semi trucks out in the EU with driver airbags, I think Volvo and Man do it I’m not sure

#

Or was it Scania

peak sparrow
solar crow
#

Looks like a smaller version of every city transit bus in the EU

#

It also looks extremely top heavy

peak sparrow
#

They're surprisingly stable

#

They're called Midibus

sturdy pumice
#

Like, If you paint this thing School Bus Yellow, put inside "School bus seats", and other things like the retractable stop sign, that front bumper bar and other things that can be fitted in any bus, It would be AS safe as a traditional schoolbus

peak sparrow
solar crow
#

Interesting

peak sparrow
#

A 1990s Cacciamali schoolbus built on an Iveco Daily van chassis

solar crow
#

We kinda have those as school buses, but they’re called Type B buses

sturdy pumice
# peak sparrow

I mean, almost everywhere, school buses are, well, normal buses, that carry children

peak sparrow
#

Most common schoolbuses here are these, still built on a Daily chassis
Tho they are considerably a lot taller, making their proportions look wonky

solar crow
#

And then we have the Type A, which sits on a cutaway cab van

sturdy pumice
#

In the US a School Bus, is basically built to be just that

solar crow
#

You just figured that out?

paper hearth
#

I don't think this thread is not the Photon anymore xd

sturdy pumice
#

The point is, why US School buses are dedicated buses while everywhere else they are just normal buses?

Some bus coachbuilders in the 90s liked to overdesign their buses...
Well, they looked modern for the time I'll give them that

I can understand styling on tourist buses, but school buses don't need styling

Tourist buses do somewhat need styling because i doubt a tourist company would do well with Multipla-shaped buses

do you think you’ll end up making a version with a split windshield?

And all bluebirds do as well

Thomas and IC are the only ones who don’t do split windshields on their conventional dog nose buses

sturdy pumice
solar crow
#

split windshields create a small blindspot, thats why theyre not as common anymore except for bluebird

sturdy pumice
#

At least, here in Brazil, is is kind of rare for a bus manufacturer to offer a single piece windscreen as a optional, let alone as standard. Citybuses, School buses and Coaches are all split windscreen, apart from some coaches owned by "crazy companies"
