The 1999 Bridge CreekโMoore tornado was a large, long-lived and exceptionally powerful F5 tornado in which the highest wind speed ever measured globally was recorded at 321 miles per hour (517 km/h) by a Doppler on Wheels (DOW) radar. Considered the strongest tornado ever recorded to have affected the Oklahoma City metropolitan area, the torn...

Brick v Wood to me has been something of a interesting debate. While I wont go too far in #memes I'll state this. There is no perfect building material.
Wood has many flaws but is overall cheaper and in your average natural disaster (weak tornado, severe earthquake) it's somewhat easy to survive so long as it's built up to code (which is not as common as it should be). Fire though is where wood really falls off. It also allows for the easiest modification and for fire crews, easier to break down external walls to save those that are trapped inside.
Brick in Violent tornadoes or even medium level earthquakes are death traps but in the event of a moderate flood 6.5ft (2m) can be repaired quickly and with little damage (except if soil is involved). It's also resistant to fire (but not immune as if brick has any water in it and gets too hot the bricks can explode as it happen during ww2 London blitz).
Proper made concreate has the same problem as brick when it comes to fire or earthquakes. But is practically immune to wind damage and outside of scouring or being buried flooding.
FYI. Here is a brick building vs severe tornado.
USA is like Italy if you went from south to north. Most places in the USA go from Summer 32c highs to -15c lows winters, either super dry or super wet.
