I'm a bit late to this convo but yeah you definitely can modify the JBeam in lua before the car is spawned, my Carscaler mod also works like that.
Though with the debug library being nerfed in recent updates you sometimes need to be a bit creative to get your code hooked into the right place.
But for modded vehicles its probably easier to just fix it in the JBeam file itself.
The lua way is only really useful if you want to make changes to vanilla vehicles without replacing or making copies of all the existing parts, or do something that affects all cars.

Alongside that, it seems my car's rear is somehow not symmetrical under power, one side caster is 0.1 deg lower than the other side while the body has no roll, and all nodes are perfectly symmetrical. Really weird.

Clear model and texture cache. If that doesn't work try pressing f11, go to window at the top, on the drop down menu go to material editor.

On the new window, click the eye dropper little way down next the MAP TO drop down menu, click on the car with texture errors, and a little drop menu will appear where you clicked.

Scroll down and look for anything that starts with unmapped_. Go to mod menu, look for the mods file name, click it and click UNPACK and when it is unfroze, click open in file explorer.

Next open the folder and find inside the vehicles' folder MAIN.MATERIALS.JSON

Now open that in notepad (or better notepad++) and look for the unmapped textures and double check where the textures are claimed to be are actually there. While you are at it you can double check all the texture file strings and you will eventually fix the issue by double checking every thing.

When you think you have fixed it and saved the file, hard reload the game by pressing ctrl+R and Ctrl + L just to double make sure. When you have reloaded and double checked you've fixed it go to mod menu and click where the mod zip name like before then click PACK, wait for it to load and you should be good.

What I just mentioned above....also the engine sound editor under
F11 > Windows > Audio > Engine sound debug or editor (i forget which it is called. you will know when you see it)

Fiddle fart around with that and you can modify engine sounds and then COPY and paste into the car you have spawned's vehicle dir\engine.jbeam where it says all the engine sound code.

I'll be honest I have made scratch textures including a UV remap, a full model rework, partial remodel and almost everything in between for the Civetta J58 mod I run, but I had to ask for help to get a skin to work.

In my opinion the best way of doing it is putting maps up early access paid, and releasing free. You get at least half a year of that map being up paid, plenty of customers (people don’t want to wait for a year for a map), and then releasing it for free at the end, so everyone can access it

Yes Ig it's possible but only if the wheel materials are set up with paint layers. Most vanilla wheels use static textures, so you’d have to convert them to a vehicle.paint shader and add proper color masking. So yeah, it’s doable.

oh yeah, i have a very good idea of the pain that i will need to go through. but someone needs to damn do it. I NEED BLACK CLOCKWISES. My main problem right now, is how the user will choose the rim colour. i was thinking id take up the colour3 slot, but im afraid this will create conflicts with existing mods, and also doesnt allow two-tone rim colours as colour2 is very widely used in vanilla, mainly for liveries as far as i know. my best idea so far, is adding rgb sliders in the tuning section, right with the tire pressures and rim offsets.

True don’t use colour3 that’s gonna cause conflicts and limit you. RGB sliders in tuning is the better route. You can just pass a rimColor value to the material and multiply it with the base texture, that way it’s independent from the vehicle paint system and works on everything. But also genuinely I love the idea it could give beamng more customizations without being too complicated which i hope I can help you out on

Go to any mod website, I use modsland and modshot, download a mod, don't just click everything some are paid some suck and some have viruses modsland will proably use modfire to download it just be ready to close when you click download. then once it does leave it zipped and put it in the repo folder of the game, I think theres some way to do it through steam but its eaiser for me to use local because I got beamng through family sharing of steam when my brother bought it.

usually all the materials get their colour from a singular texture (base colour). So painting different material won't change that texture, you either have to change it, or replace it with a different texture

Those white patches aren’t coming from the texture you’re painting, they’re part of the terrain layer/vertex color or a detail map. Painting over it won’t remove it, it just swaps the material. You’ll need to check the terrain layers or splatmap and remove/replace the layer causing it, or edit the control map in your terrain shader. If it’s vertex color, you’ll have to repaint it in the terrain/mesh editor instead.

CK Skybox makes the biggest difference. You can get reshade but you need to know what you’re doing, and its not really a mod
