BRO I tried out OpenTrack head tracking using my webcam, and it's pretty awesome, but when I got up to get dinner I almost fell over because I had gotten used to moving my eyes to look at my monitor while turning my head, so when I turned my head toward my door my eyes went the other way and I got hella dizzy

It's free and really easy to set up. I followed this tutorial pretty much all you gotta do is install it, change two specific settings, adjust settings to fit your specific webcam, and it works with Beam automatically

If you swap on a super loud exhaust, put it in neutral near cops or else get a noise pollution ticket. Maybe those tickets only get issued in the city

The only thing abt those wheels is that they wear pretty poorly, ive had mine (g920) for 2-3 years with relatively heavy use and I have constant centring problems and at centre the wheel feels very loose

Would just recommend going to something like a moza r3 as its at a similar price point but significantly better (in both quality and the fact its dd)

And the stock springs and setup of the included pedals are awful, I’ve changed mine recently and its made a massive difference (the pedals arent that bad considering)

The brakes pedal is just way too stiff? They made it like that so some sim players can use it for formula racing (which has very very stiff pedals) and if you feel it’s too stiff you can calibrate it so it doesn’t take that much pressure to make it fully pressed

I’ve had mine for 3 years and have not faced any issues other than the ones I have created

Sure, sometimes the wheel is slightly off center sometimes when starting it but unplugging and replugging it in fixes it so it’s not a problem at all, and if that doesn’t fix it hardware always needs to be calibrated once in a while

Its not even that, the stupid rubber gromit thing they put in the brake pedal spring makes pressing the brake feel super inaccurate and a pain especially on carpet. If they had some form of 2 spring setup where a softer spring made up most of the travel followed by a stiffer spring below that it’d be sm better

The other thing that sucks are the pedal position sensors, ive had issues especially with the throttle pedal where at foot flat it would register a lower value or flicker between something like 95% and 100%

Hall effect sensors are way better

For me its always off centre on first startup so I have to either manually calibrate the wheel by turning full lock left to right or unplug it every time

Aside from that they’re pretty solid, but the issues start to get really frustrating when you want to progress beyond casual racing games (like forza) onto more serious sims (like acc)

Simulated =/= simulated accurately. In many cases well done simplier approximation can be much more accurate with results than more complex system. Main issues of beam right now are tyre model and aerodynamics (although it can be mostly mitigated with running no drag on collision triangles and replacing them with lua based aerodynamic behaviour).

Other is chassis stiffness. Yes, you should "treat everything as a spring" when it comes to vehicle structure but beam's cars have opposite issue to most sims - they're often too soft instead of too stiff. Also maximum "stable" beam stiffness is related to weights and it's almost impossible to properly recreate modern lightweight structures, like composite suspension control arms.

As for now, vanilla and good mods for Assetto drive more realistically than cars in Beam, mostly because of tyre model - beam's tyre parameters don't allow you to get neither proper load and slip characteristics I mentioned before. And I have experience of trying to simulate same racecar (with measured IRL tyre values, chassis stiffness and aero parameters) in both games. Assetto's mod drove much closer to real car, despite obvious much bigger simplifications used for that game.

I've played assetto and it feels like a child's toy, compared to beam. I make mods for beam and have never had any issues with stiffness or anything based on weight if you make the car right, then it works.
