Far more likely to be an intercepted missile breaking up. Far too high for a typical cluster munition, and there would be no reason for the individual munitions to be glowing.
Edit: But it does appear Iran has specialized cluster warheads on ballistic missiles. Just read that they can deploy as high up as 7 km, so maybe that's enough re-entry time to start glowing.

If all of that is true, then the planes were F-15 EX Eagle IIs, which would be the first documented loss of any of those aircraft, combat or otherwise.

The E also seems an unlikely choice as an air defense fighter, seeing as it was a purposeful redesign of a superiority jet into a ground attack jet. Don’t know if we’ll be able to know more unless CENTCOM tells us more.

I would assume it is orders of magnitude easier to ship them as cargo due to their size if they are making a trip that long. Depends on what drones but many are designed to stay up there for hours and hours, not fly cross Atlantic at speed.

Insurance has to cover not only the value of the ship, but any damage it could do through a spill or crash. I believe there also has to be certain inspections and requirements for internationally accepted insurance.
Also having America responsible for the cost of any lost ships changes the value proposition for Iran to bomb those ships. And any American navy escort is similarly a prime target.

My dad's a retired nuclear physicist (DoE fundamental science research, not weapons or IAEA inspections)/Iranian-expat and did confirm through what he'd read that this was a significant issue...albeit whether it qualified as an existential threat is a much more broad question.
The short, short summary of the lead up to 2025's strikes is that Iran could "sprint" (several months) to a sufficient quantity of weapon's grade material (90+%) if they wanted to, however there was no statement as to whether they could operationalize it in terms of creating a functional warhead/loading it onto a ballistic missile they could trust to use it. Simply put, "it wasn't ready yet, but Iran was clearly doing more than enrichment for science."
From my own background (Clinical Research) I can confirm that there are no known and widely recognized legitimate clinical studies in the world that involves 60+% enriched material, even in terms of producing radionuclides for other medicines.

The org is intentionally built against direct enforcement as the [international consensus] fear was that it would act in a politically biased way otherwise, including on civilian use/access.
I can't say more on my personal understanding than that as I don't have the requisite experience there/would be speaking out of turn.

I would certainly assume that the F/A-18E/F family can with its AESA radar and modern avionics. But, the fog of war is a real issue even in 2026, especially when multiple nations and services are involved. I don't have a WSJ account so I don't know if it states under which conditions the jets were shot down. The F-15Es could have been in the middle of a UAS attack using their APKWS to shoot down the drones.

Im not an expert on missile defence, but my understanding is that losing the AN/FPS-132 is like losing a piece of the jigsaw puzzle. You'll lose some of the recognised air picture, but there could well be enough other assets in the region to fill the gap. I don't believe the 132 can actually guide missiles to a target, but can/could detect launches earlier than THAAD's TPY-2 and potentially SPY on an Arleigh Burke Destroyer can.

Yeah, as Jasmine implied, the PrSM is a missile family or series, so different range numbers have been given for different variants. The Increment 1 310 mile range was a choice governed by the INF Treaty, not any sort of technical limitation, so it'll actually be pretty interesting to how far the ones actually fired were sent. The treaty is not exactly the most intact piece of international law right now, but the U.S. hasn't used any weapon that violates that provision of the treaty AFAIK.

Update to this because apparently I was out of date on my info. The U.S. withdrew from the INF Treaty in 2019 and Russia announced it wouldn't abide by it in 2025, so it is even less intact than I realized. I still don't think the U.S. has violated that particular range restriction before, but still interesting.

Given Trump and Hegseth's chronically stated preference for reducing bureaucratic and treaty based restrictions on armed forces, I think we're close to the line of speculation on any given weapons platform being limited or used.
It's also very clear from both the 2025 strikes (use of some bunker busters that weren't previously fielded) and this war that they're not trying to limit US rivals gathering data on US tech capabilities, as past presidents were more want to do.

Saying 'Iraqi Kurds launch offensive' suggests that official armed forces of Iraq's Kurdistan Regional Goverment are the ones performing the attack, standing quite contrary to standing neutrality policy from KRG (which as more official actor act more of a diplomatic base).
On the other hand, there are groups in KRG which are made up of Kurds from Iran and may try to go back there (and which of course puts KRG in unwelcome spotlight as either facilitator or blocker of this movement). There's the distinction I wanted to point to.
Additionally, the KRG Peshmerga force may be far from ideal position to stage such an effort, owning to the fact that they are ver much in progress of long needed reforms:

As a rule of thumb, if they have "osint" in the name/handle, then it's not a good source.
There are exceptions (OSINTtechnical is who first comes to my mind) but the vast majority aren't.
Especially with a claim this big, it would be picked by far many more sources

I am not sure if this is propaganda or not, but it does line up with something someone who worked in the US army and in the region said to me yesterday.
They told me that Iran has missiles and drones hidden away all over and they can keep firing for a long while.
So I would look for people to talk to or for accounts whose owners are ex-military or ex-intelligence and who are specialised in the region. They should have more insight into the current situation, as well as Iran's capabilities.

I've seen vids of missiles being launched from hidden buried tubes in the desert. I imagine those don't show up on photos from optical spy sats in the visible spectrum, maybe ground penetrating radar is an option.

I wanted to ask. If the Kurds confirmed they will not start an offensive then where did those weapons go from yesterday? If the Iraqi Army was attacked in this process then there must be information out there about where those supplies went, otherwise, why would it be so important to engage a regional ally over?
Is there other regional militias not tied to the main Kurdish forces that could shed some light on this via their official annoucements or activities?
