Hundreds of people filled Wilshire Avenue on Thursday afternoon, marching through Koreatown and past MacArthur Park in observance of International Migrants Day.
The march, organized by a coalition of labor unions, faith leaders and immigrant rights groups, wound through neighborhoods organizers say have recently seen Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity before ending outside a Home Depot in Pico Union. Organizers also used the rally to call for a boycott of big-box retailers, including Home Depot and Target.
“This march is in solidarity with International Migrants Day,” said Maya Payes, a college student who joined the protest. “It’s really important right now as we defend migrants under attack.”
At the rally, speakers emphasized the role immigrants play in shaping the country's fabric. Susan Kim of the Koreatown Immigrant Workers Alliance told the crowd she attended because immigrants and migrants like herself “are the hope of America.”
“We bring love and vision. We’re innovators,” said Angelica Salas, executive director of CHIRLA.
International Migrants Day is observed each year on Dec. 18 to recognize the global impact of migration and the contributions migrants make to their communities.
