This is the second item I've seen in the last few days that incorporated a legitimate news source ID on something that wasn't intended to be news. In this case it was satire and in the other case it was a post on my local NextDoor designed to spark emotional debate about freedom of speech that started with a fake "CNN BREAKING NEWS" 'byline' regarding a joint statement by ABC, NBC, and CBS committing to uphold free speech
I love good satire that can spark real conversation, but this trend concerns me when we already have an issue with fake news coming from credible sources like the White House (acetaminophen and autism, white Afrikaner refugees, MS13/TDA 'tattoos' etc). I don't recall The Onion or the Babylon Bee (Christian satire) ever doing a satire story with a real journalism logo. It seems there needs to be some level of journalistic Integrity when it comes to satire, though I'm not sure it would have helped with the NextDoor post since it was produced by an individual. As a moderator, I had it taken down for several violations but mentioned the fake CNN byline as one of them. At least on his next post, which was also intended to be provocative, he didn't fake a news source. Is it wrong of me to think we should expect actual satire producers to have the Integrity not to include actual news IDs in their satirical posts, especially those about this Administration where it can often be hard to tell fact from fiction in the first place?
Hello! If you want to research organised disinformation campaigns, may I recommend #disinfo-and-propaganda
What I'm seeing isn't organized to disinfo or propaganda but I'll just drop the subject
Which is funny because:
#disinfo-and-propaganda message
Neither irresponsible satire nor posters looking to create clickbait that trends are by definition organized disinfo or propaganda. But this is obviously something that doesn't fit this Discord so I'm just going to let it go

Trump is now using official government sites to say this: www.hud.gov
i have no clue what the point of this address is.
He's talked about the Gulf of America, saying there's 2 "N-words" (!?!?!?!!?), talks about how "whoever writes my autobiography will get the Nobel Peace Prize but not me..."

I genuinely do not know what the point of this was, none of it is actually relevant to the audience infront of him. (This has been going on for 20 minutes he's now talking about court cases and tariffs.)
It's an authoritarian power projection. They want to look like they have absolute command of the military as a show of force
Also vanity
This is the kind of shit you say right before an empire-ending defeat because you replaced all your logistics officers with roided neckless hypertensives who jack off into their Grunt Style t-shirts fantasizing about going back in time and killing more women and children at My Lai.

Hegseth: "We unleash overwhelming and punishing violence on the enemy. We also don't fight with stupid rules of engagement. We untie the hands of our warfighters to intimidate, demoralize, hunt, and kill the enemies of our country. No more politically correct and overbearing rules of engagement."

what the actual fuck
It was a rough speech
He opened with a complaint that the upper ranks were too full of women and minorities because of woke
Called people fat beardos, insisted that everyone needed to be doing PT and good with a rifle
I would watch, bail, and try to watch it again
He literally called the DoD the "department of woke"
He signed off on modest amounts of physical, verbal and sexual harassment as a part of training
Pete's speech was an insult on top of all the insults it contained
"I told Pete [Hegseth], we should use some of these dangerous cities as training grounds for our military."

highlighting Trump’s remarks at the worldwide GOFO gathering:
Three different defense officials who spoke with The Intercept called Trump’s speech “embarrassing.” The same defense officials took Hegseth to task for gathering the military’s top commanders from around the world for a rant little different than his social media posts. One called Hegseth’s address “garbage,” using a term the war secretary used during his speech. Another said: “We are diminished as a nation by both Hegseth and Trump.”
Trump used his address to take aim at cities he claimed “are run by the radical left Democrats,” … “We’re going to straighten them out one by one. And this is going to be a major part for some of the people in this room,” he said. “That’s a war too. It’s a war from within.” He continued, “We should use some of these dangerous cities as training grounds for our military.”
“We will be a fighting and winning machine,”
…
“I think we should maybe start thinking about battleships by the way,” he said. “I don’t think it’s old technology when you look at those guns. But it’s something we’re actually considering, the concept of battleship, nice six-inch side solid steel, not aluminum.”
…
“I moved a submarine or two, I won’t say about the two, over to the coast of Russia just to be careful, because we can’t let people throw around that word.” He continued: “I call it the N-word. There are two N-words, and you can’t use either of them.”
…
“Listening to Donald Trump was deeply troubling and it is clear he is unfit for the role of commander in chief,” one of the defense officials told The Intercept, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
…
“This is truly disturbing. He is clearly unwell even for Trump,” said a second defense official, who later referenced the 25th Amendment…

highlighting Hegseth’s remarks at the worldwide GOFO gathering:
Hegseth pledged to fix “decades of decay” that had diminished what he repeatedly called the “Woke Department.”
…
Hegseth took aim at what he called “the social justice, politically correct and toxic ideological garbage,” and advanced a “broken windows theory” that he said would restore the military to greatness.
“No more dudes in dresses,” Hegseth ranted. “We are done with that shit.” The clean-shaven secretary railed against troops with beards and long hair, saying that only members of the Special Operations forces would be allowed to flout standards. “No more beardos,” he decreed, taking aim at those whom he said looked like “nordic pagans.”
…
“Secretary Hegseth’s misogynistic lethality screed was disqualifying. His continued railing against women in combat roles shows his deep personal inadequacies,” said the first defense official. “It shocks the conscience to hear the Secretary of Defense — he is no warrior — endorse bullying and hazing of service members. How dare this former National Guard major lecture our military leaders on lethality when he’s focused solely on his own cult of personality.”
…
Two of the defense officials expressed shock to The Intercept at the cost and danger, in terms of operational security, of assembling the military’s top officers to listen to a rant. “He wants to talk about ‘garbage,’” one said, referencing the secretary’s use of the term. “That’s the definition of it.”
…
During his address on Tuesday, Hegseth railed against what he called “stupid rules of engagement.” He continued, “We untie the hands of our warfighters to intimidate, demoralize, hunt and kill the enemies of our country.”
“no more dudes in dresses”, Hegseth finally speaking up about the character Klinger in MASH

"It appears that Donald Trump not only has dementia set in, but he's copying tactics of Vladimir Putin. Serious question - is there an organization that's capturing the various speeches, orders, and general ephemera of the President and adding citations to which law is being violated by his assertion? It feels like it's only a handful of common ones (Posse Comitatus, Hatch) but I'm never sure if there's something that violates, say, the Interstate Highway Act or Voting Accessibility for the Elderly and Handicapped Act.

The local part "giftgirl2025" of the account demanding swords can make it hard to take matter seriously.
Hi, can you explain what this means?
The article quotes The New York Times that the point of contact or liaison from the Department of State used an e-mail address with that name.
The request for a gift, according to the Times, came from a State Department liaison who used the email address “giftgirl2025” and initially told the museum that they were looking for “like a sword or something.”
But your comment was... just your opinion? I thought you might want to make a relevant point, but did so rather cryptically. In case it was just a random comment: please use the rest of the internet, so that we can focus on facts and research.

The Trump administration sent 300 federalized members of the California National Guard to Oregon early Sunday, after being blocked by a federal court from deploying the Oregon National Guard in that state, according to Gov. Gavin Newsom of California. Mr. Newsom denounced the move as a “breathtaking abuse of power” and said California would sue.
The move came less than a day after Judge Karin Immergut of the U.S. District Court in Oregon issued a temporary restraining order preventing Mr. Trump and the Defense Department from mobilizing 200 Oregon troops for a 60-day deployment there. Mr. Trump had said the troops were needed to respond to demonstrations at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement building in Portland, but the judge wrote that she expected a trial court to agree with the state’s contention that the president had exceeded his constitutional authority.

For Trump and his allies, recent developments, including the government shutdown, the indictment of James Comey and the assassination of Kirk, are openings to escalate the attack on institutions and programs identified with liberalism and the Democratic Party. For the MAGA right, any crisis is an opportunity. In fact, every crisis is.
The assault has become increasingly brutal as Trump and his allies intensify their demonization of all things left of center, by which they often seem to mean anything to the left of the hard right.
…
“Polarization feels almost quaint relative to the profound stress the Trump administration is imposing on our democracy,” Sean Westwood, a political scientist at Dartmouth, wrote by email.
…
Trump’s goal, in [Princeton history professor Sean] Wilentz’s view: “eliminate all political opponents, as, by definition, enemies of the state. This includes, above all, the Democratic Party, described by Miller even before Kirk’s murder as ‘a domestic extremist organization.’ ”
…
[USCD political scientist Barbara] Walter wrote that what stood out in the aftermath of the Kirk assassination “wasn’t just the speed, but the discipline. The narrative of ‘left-wing extremism’ snapped into place almost instantly, as if waiting for a trigger. This suggests that the plan was already in place, waiting for an inevitable tragedy to exploit for political gain.”

In May 2024, the group was bantering about a Trump campaign staffer who’d been hired in Georgia and was working on outreach to minority voters, when Ingrassia suggested she didn’t show enough deference to the Founding Fathers being white, according to the chat.
“Paul belongs in the Hitler Youth with Ubergruppenfuhrer Steve Bannon,” the first participant in the chat wrote, referring to the paramilitary rank in Nazi Germany and the Republican strategist.
…
“I do have a Nazi streak in me from time to time, I will admit it,” Ingrassia responded, according to the chain. One of the people in the text group said in an interview that Ingrassia’s comment was not taken as a joke, and three participants pushed back against Ingrassia during the text exchange that day.
…
Earlier this month, POLITICO reported that Ingrassia, 30, has been the subject of an internal investigation at the Department of Homeland Security, where he works as White House liaison, after a sexual harassment complaint was filed against him.

So began my two-day text correspondence with the woman President Donald Trump had installed, in no small part, to bring the very prosecution she was now discussing with me by text message.
Over the next 33 hours, Halligan texted me again.
And again.
And again.
My exchange with Halligan, however, was highly unusual in a number of respects. She initiated a conversation with me, a reporter she barely knew, to discuss an ongoing prosecution that she is personally handling. She mostly criticized my reporting—or, more precisely, my summary of someone else’s reporting. But several of her messages contained language that touch on grand jury matters, even as she insisted that she could not reveal such information, which is protected from disclosure by prosecutors under federal law.
As a legal journalist covering the Justice Department, I had never encountered anything quite like my exchange with Halligan. Neither had my editor.
…
Justice Department spokeswoman Natalie Baldassarre confirmed the authenticity of the texts at 4:34 p.m. today
…
I told the Justice Department that my deadline was 4:15 p.m.
In response, the department sent the statement quoted at the outset of this piece. In addition, just a few minutes before the deadline, my dormant Signal connection with Halligan suddenly came alive again.
At 4:10 p.m., she texted me: “By the way—everything I ever sent you is off record. You’re not a journalist so it’s weird saying that but just letting you know.”
I responded: “I’m sorry, but that’s not how this works. You don’t get to say that in retrospect.”
Halligan was unpersuaded: “Yes, I do. Off record.”
“I am really sorry. I would have been happy to speak with you on an off the record basis had you asked,” I said. “But you didn’t ask, and I still haven’t agreed to speak on that basis. Do you have any further comment for the story? ”
To my surprise, she kept going: “It’s obvious the whole convo is off record. There’s disappearing messages and it’s on signal. What is your story? You never told me about a story.”

“The ad that Mr. Trump mentioned in his post was taken out by the government of Ontario, Canada’s most populous province and a key nexus of economic cooperation with the United States.
The ad, which according to the government of Ontario cost 75 million Canadian dollars ($53.5 million), uses audio from 1987 from President Ronald Reagan denouncing tariffs as destructive for the economy. The ad was to begin airing in the United States this week on Newsmax and Bloomberg, the Ontario government said, and then on several other U.S. channels over the course of the following two weeks.
“When someone says, ‘Let’s impose tariffs on foreign imports,’ it looks like they’re doing the patriotic thing by protecting American products,” Mr. Reagan’s voice narrates over a video of generic images of economic activity. But, the audio warns, tariffs cause damage. “Markets shrink and collapse, industries shut down and millions of people lose their jobs.”
Archive: https://archive.is/z3PDX
When they say 75 million Canadian dollars I guess they mean the creation and distribution of the ad, not just its creation?
Early reporting stated that it was $75m CAD for the "ad campaign", which would include post-production market selection and placement:
https://www.fastcompany.com/91422815/ronald-reagan-narrates-anti-tariff-ad-from-canada
Later in the story you'll see how Ford conflates the price of the ad with the campaign in the quote: “I’m a big Ronald Reagan fan . . . We’re going to launch a $75 million ad, and we’re going to repeat that message to every Republican district there is, right across the entire country.”
So the issue has been muddy from the start, but early coverage (before the US retaliation) was clearer that it was the campaign and not just the ad.

I didn't post the quote here for MAGA to read (unless there are MAGA on this Discord). I posted it because I personally wanted to know for myself what was in the original speech and what was in the ad specifically from the speech. I thought there might be other curious researchers here who might be interested in what helped me. That's the reason I posted it here. As a side note, about 30 years ago I would have been MAGA. Most of my friends from that time are now. I have a background that will let me use this article and get those who are on the edges, or even more towards the center but not fully engrossed to at least listen and judge for themselves. No group is a monolith and that includes MAGA. There are people in many stages of involvement for many reasons and it's a mistake to lump them all into one giant "they won't listen".

The value I find in this Channel is not that it's a place to tell me what will or won't happen, or what I should and shouldn't be prepared for. What it is is a place where I can come and look at credible information pulled together from a wide range of sources that I don't have to worry about being AI slop or some other worthless distraction. I can then look at what's been posted here and what I see in my own community and use it as a guide for what I think I need to be prepared for or what I need to be doing now. That might look totally different for you where you are but we can both rely on solid sources of information here to help us decide. It's sort of like a verified information Library. Not all the sources will fit completely but they're all legitimate views from real humans or legitimate information on what this Administration is doing or would like to do

This was a teaching in the megachurch world back when I was involved in the 1980s, taught by Lester Sumerall among others. I didn't realize it was still around but I guess it makes sense seeing that many of those churches are now MAGA oriented, This will certainly appeal to at least a segment of Trump's Christian base.
I heard this conspiracy as late as the early 2010s from one of my mom's conspiracy theorist friends. She was quite out there (she talked about how Obama belonged to the illuminati, etc). I'm surprised it's gone mainstream, but also not in light of the incoherent Peter Thiel antichrist rants

As Trump turns his war stance to Nigeria. Here is some important context related to a coalition of religious and other leaders (heritage, etc) who sent Trump a letter last week about the issues for Christians in Nigeria. Thread in link: https://www.threads.com/@rebcam2000/post/DQh4RtCkwtt
Why has T turned his attention to Nigeria?
On October 15, 2025, a coalition of U.S. religious-freedom advocates, faith-based organizations, and academics sent an Open Letter to President Trump urging him to redesignate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) under the International Religious Freedom Act.
Trump on Nigeria : https://trumpstruth.org/statuses/33543
If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now disgraced country, “guns-a-blazing,” to completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities. I am hereby instructing our Department...
i guess, outside of the partisan actors involved, what is the situation with this? are there any grounding for these assertions?
This doesn't make sense to me on a rational level. While I'm no expert on Nigeria I do know from friends and acquaintances from there that a lot of the anti-lgbtq legislation in recent years has come from Christians in the government. If Christians have that kind of influence in the government why would the government be persecuting Christians?

Trump didn’t get a stay so they have gone to SCOTUS to try to force a stay on paying SNAP to feed hungry people. https://www.threads.com/@chrisgeidner/post/DQxj2eSlUOc
BREAKING: DOJ goes to SCOTUS trying to stop a district court order that USDA pay out full SNAP benefits this month.
The First Circuit denied an administrative stay, but has not yet ruled on the stay request. And, CNN reported that USDA is already processing payments.
DOJ went to SCOTUS anyway.
He remains focused on the most important matters.

This is being presented as a dividend while ignoring all the extra being paid by Americans as a result of the tariffs

Right? The tariffs themselves cost Americans roughly $1,300 a household

While it would be a net positive, it would also be even more like taxes with a different name. Like getting a refund(or interest free loan)
True, however based on Trump's comments regarding the stimulus checks during the pandemic, he's expecting them to be seen as free money, the government giving you extra money
Those subpoenaed were asked for any materials dated between July 1, 2016 and February 28, 2017, according to the source familiar with some of the issued subpoenas.
Those kinds of documents, the source familiar said, were so highly classified that they “would be in the possession of the government.” The intelligence and law enforcement officials now facing subpoenas were already subjects of two prior investigations led by then-special counsel John Durham and former Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz. Those investigations found no evidence to support charges against major targeted players like Brennan.
For those reasons, the source familiar with the subpoenas issued last Friday, called them “performative.”

The USDA just stated, in writing, that the federal system handling SNAP payments was reprogrammed to block full benefits.

Social Work was another big one I think excluded
List of Degrees Not Classed as 'Professional' by Trump Admin
Nursing
Physician assistants
Physical therapists
Audiologists
Architects
Accountants
Educators
Social workers
Does anyone know who made the determination to exclude these specific degrees?
I’ll try to look
Trump on Mamdani: "We had some interesting conversation and some of his ideas are really the same ideas that I have. But a big thing on cost. The new word is 'affordability.' Another word is just 'groceries.' It's sort of an old fashioned word but it's very accurate."
Q: Are you affirming that you think President Trump is a fascist?
MAMDANI: I've spoken about--
TRUMP: That's okay. You can just say yes. I don't mind.
So mostly women
It’s a curious list. Going to search now to see who decided these professions. It was noted in Project 2025 to decrease access to care: https://howardbrown.org/decoding-project-2025-a-danger-to-healthcare-access/ less people going into the profession, less affordable care. I also know there’s a push from education tech companies to replace educators and social workers with GenAI platforms. Will see if I can find a good analysis on it.
Thanks, all of this is helpful, I'm not sure exactly how but I know understanding who will help me understand why and that should be helpful
Yeah my next thought would be to look at their backgrounds/interests/influences
My initial reaction to seeing the list was that these were all professions that DJT has found problematic in one way or another either regarding his health or businesses, but I figured that was too reactive. Still, the list comes off as inconsistent at first read but there's likely logic there somewhere so who made the list, and yes their backgrounds seems to be the best question at this time
I’m trying to dig further, as I’m seeing other professions/degrees mentioned not on the Newsweek article (theology, clinical psychology), so it’s possible it’s not a full list as claimed, ha
Thanks for all the digging. I'm pretty much burn out for today but I'll work on things this weekend and see what I can find too. This is definitely one I can't use AI for because it will just make up things so what's going to have to be good old fashioned manual searching as I have the time

Presumably yes.
I was thinking specifically about the funding here because I was already planning to post this, where I wonder the same thing, despite him saying cost will be low, how does he intend to pay for it. In this case there are also issues of security risks since the location in question is inside an Air Force Base. Will people be granted access that haven't or can't pass security clearance in exchange for this project? We just don't know but I'm hoping if this gets more coverage that there are those who will ask those type of questions

Also a category that includes his mother, paternal grandparents, and two of his three wives. But of course that's different, because neither he nor de facto President Miller actually care about immigration as such. They care about racism, and it's a farce to concede the pretense it's anything else.

Trump makes the outrageous claim that “most” immigrants, which include over 25 million U.S. citizens, “are on welfare, from failed nations, or from prisons, mental institutions, gangs, or drug cartels.”As insulting as the “deplorables” comment, and on Thanksgiving day no less.

[the plan] would reduce in prominence the headquarters of U.S. Central Command, U.S. European Command and U.S. Africa Command by placing them under the control of a new organization known as U.S. International Command
…
Such moves would complement other efforts by the administration to shift resources from the Middle East and Europe and focus foremost on expanding military operations in the Western Hemisphere, [sources] said
…
The Pentagon has shared little to no details with Congress, a lack of communication that has perturbed members of the Republican-led Senate and House Armed Services committees, according to two people familiar with how the panels have prepared for the proposal. Top officers at the commands involved are awaiting more details as well, officials said.
The plan also calls for realigning U.S. Southern Command and U.S. Northern Command, which oversee military operations throughout the Western Hemisphere, under a new headquarters to be known as U.S. Americas Command, or Americom
…
the moves would reduce the number of top military headquarters — known as combatant commands — from 11 to eight while cutting the number of four-star generals and admirals who report directly to Hegseth.
…
Those familiar with the plan said it aligns with the Trump administration’s national security strategy, released this month, which declares that the “days of the United States propping up the entire world order like Atlas are over.”
…
[the proposal] grew from a request made by Hegseth in the spring to look for ways to improve how troops are commanded and controlled
…
Lawmakers have taken the extraordinary step of requiring the Pentagon to submit a detailed blueprint that describes the realignment’s potential costs and impacts

What about it
I dont understand why he is ranting about "stolen oil and land"
This section, in part:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Venezuelan_oil_industry#Nationalization
Venezuela has the world's largest proven oil reserves at an estimated 304 billion barrels (18% of global reserves) as of 2020. The country was once one of the world's largest exporters of oil. Oil production peaked in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
In 2008, crude oil production in Venezuela was the tenth-highest in the world at 2,394,020 barrel...
In the 70's Venezuela nationalized its oil sector (as PDVSA) which included assets from several American firms such as ExxonMobil, then the in the 80's internationalized as Citgo buying USA and European refineries, and at current(-ish) Chevron is the only US firm allowed to operate overseeing somewhere between 20-25% of Venezuela's oil reserves.
This should not be taken as speculativly causal, ie. "war for oil", but it is an explanation for the specific justifactory rhetoric at use here.

The change comes after the Kennedy Center board reportedly unanimously voted to rename the performing arts venue on Thursday.

Not that it really matters, but it takes quite a while to get a sign like that made, so they had it ready before they ever did the "vote" I'm sure of that. Gives the same vibes as the announcing the election result the day before the election.
I’m at the combination Pizza Hut and Kennedy Center.

I know, we're all tempted, but can we keep this kind of commentary on Twitter or Bluesky or whatever you prefer?
That way we can use this server for the things that actually done or said.
Any actual questions of what this proposed ship would even be classified if any current designation could be given from any stated details might also be better asked in #maritime , again respecting that it's not a place for open speculation or commentary.
The depiction above doesn't look like any of the professional specs I saw when I was a document coder for a US Government case involving a military vessel. Just because you can draw something artistically doesn't mean it can be built functionally. Until there are contractor documents showing actual specs it doesn't seem worthwhile to try to figure out what class of warship it is.
It seems like the size is a requirement in itself. It is nearly identical in size as the Iowa class battleship, which i dont think is a coincident. But the systems they want on it doesnt motivate the size imo.
That's why trying to speculate about it's class now seems unproductive. Once there's a contractor working on a design, something which may or may not happen, trying to figure out how it's going to be classed just uses time and energy that could be better spent elsewhere. Maybe in keeping an eye on likely military contractors or other ship building sources

There's the one Easter egg that I hoped people might see, and maybe they are starting to see a little bit, is that I had Stephen Miller sit underneath one of the oil paintings in the Roosevelt Room that is a beautiful depiction of Native Americans crossing a river on horseback to return to their teepee village home. It was one of those things that—I found it to be kind of interesting and maybe incongruous, that I thought might be picked up on. Go look, go look for it.

“We expect the first notices to be sent to approximately 1,000 defaulted borrowers the week of January 7, and the notices will increase in scale on a month-to-month basis,” the [Education] department said in a statement.
…
If the department scales up its wage garnishment efforts, millions could be affected. The department said in April that more than 5 million borrowers were in default and nearly 4 million more were delinquent, which means they hadn’t made a payment in more than 90 days.
Earlier this year, the government also resumed the Treasury Offset Program, which collects defaulted debts by garnishing federal and state payments, such as tax returns or Social Security benefits.
Critics have insisted that beginning wage garnishment will add stress to borrowers struggling with higher costs.
…
Borrowers in default can no longer receive deferment or forbearance, which allow borrowers to temporarily stop making payments on loans, according to the Department of Education’s website. They will also no longer have the ability to choose a repayment plan.

see section II, comments; in particular, how it would affect mail-in ballots
From the comments:
Other comments betray factual misapprehensions that, while not addressed in the discussion below, warrant correction. According to one comment, voters will be required to “pay extra” for expedited handling of Ballot Mail. However, this Proposed Rule does not change the handing of Ballot Mail or any other mail, but simply clarifies the meaning of the postmark. Nor is it correct that, as predicted by other comments, current postmarks will be supplanted by new (and substantially different) postmarks, replaced in some way by notices that Postal Service has possession of a mailpiece, or eliminated in their entirety

Mette Frederiksen, Prime Minister of Denmark, has issued a statement clearly in response:
https://stm.dk/presse/pressemeddelelser/2025/udtalelse-fra-statsminister-mette-frederiksen/
Here machine translated to English:
I have to say this very directly to the United States:
It makes absolutely no sense to talk about the need for the United States to take over Greenland. The United States has no right to annex any of the three countries in the Danish Realm.
The Kingdom of Denmark – and thus Greenland – is part of NATO and is therefore covered by the alliance's security guarantee. We already have a defence agreement between the Kingdom and the United States that gives the United States broad access to Greenland. And we, on the part of the Kingdom, have invested significantly in security in the Arctic.
I would therefore strongly urge the United States to stop threatening a historically close ally and another country and people who have made it very clear that they are not for sale.

One thing we have done is to supercharge the urgency of almost all smaller nations on earth to unite with one another to protect themselves against our aggression, and to seek out competing superpowers—China, most obviously—to align themselves with in order to have some protection against what just happened to Maduro. It is easy, for the sort of shallow, power-drunk, unwise people who currently control our government, to imagine that because we have the biggest military, there can be no consequences from us attacking a much smaller nation.
…
What do we call it when a stronger person decides to rob a weaker person because he can? It is just gangsterism. We are the most dangerous gangsters in the world today. Not in the sense of being charming rogues or alluring antiheroes. We are the bad guys. Americans, as a people, are extremely allergic to the belief that our nation is a malign force in the world. It goes against our national mythology, it goes against our national education, it goes against the natural human impulse to imagine ourselves as good people. Additionally, under our current regime, it goes against a deliberate program of quasi-religious nationalist propaganda now being rolled out as fast as possible through every channel of the government’s power.

The Constitution provides a specific, narrow definition of treason, not least because the capacious definition under English law had been a powerful tool of abuse and oppression. I myself spent much of Trump's first term in office saying that his involvement with Russia, for example, was not actually treason, even though it seemed to have that of betrayal about it. But despite all that, I do believe that Donald Trump committed treason – literal, formal, legal treason – five years ago today. I thought so on the day itself, and I still think so on reflection.

The second post is three paragraphs, but the meat is in the second two. In addition to the aforementioned, there is also something about demanding greater quantity of material produced to be funded by what would have been those executives' compensation rather than, namely, debt or government funding
"...From this moment forward, these Executives must build NEW and MODERN Production Plants, both for delivering and maintaining this important Equipment, and for building the latest Models of future Military Equipment. Until they do so, no Executive should be allowed to make in excess of $5 Million Dollars which, as high as it sounds, is a mere fraction of what they are making now. Additionally, the maintenance and repair of Equipment, once sold, is far too slow, and must be immediately enhanced. As President, I am demanding that maintenance be “spot on, on time.”
Therefore, I will not permit Dividends or Stock Buybacks for Defense Companies until such time as these problems are rectified — Likewise, for Salaries and Executive Compensation. MILITARY EQUIPMENT IS NOT BEING MADE FAST ENOUGH! It must be built now with the Dividends, Stock Buybacks, and Over Compensation of Executives, rather than borrowing from Financial Institutions, or getting the money from your Government. Longer term, this is good for both Executives and Shareholders, because it will be GREAT for our Country! ..."

“Either Raytheon steps up, and starts investing in more upfront Investment like Plants and Equipment, or they will no longer be doing business with Department of War,” Trump said on social media. “Also, if Raytheon wants further business with the United States Government, under no circumstances will they be allowed to do any additional Stock Buybacks, where they have spent Tens of Billions of Dollars, until they are able to get their act together.”
The threat came as the president issued an executive order calling on the Pentagon to begin a review to spot defense contractors who are underperforming on fulfilling contracts and insufficiently investing in building manufacturing but are still engaging in stock buybacks or distributing dividends to shareholders.
The order also calls for the Pentagon to take steps to ensure future contracts with any new or existing defense contractor contain a provision prohibiting stock buybacks during a period of underperformance on U.S. government contracts. The order also calls for the Pentagon to stipulate in future contracts that executive incentive compensation is not tied to short-term financial metrics.
Many of these treaties are congressional ratified like the UNFCCC. Yet another perceptible encroachment on congressional power. The move also creates a power vacuum which will allow China and Russia to step in as leading roles in the likes of the Global Counterterrorism Forum or the International Energy Forum, among others.
Does the president have the power to unilaterally withdraw from treaties that congress has ratified? (I do not hold legal expertise on this, just sounds counterintuitive to me?)
All of the "Can the President do this or not?" questions can be answered by "Only Congress can hold them accountable". if Congress isn't going to do that, then the President can do whatever. Everything else is just semantics, regardless of what the law actually says
I know the de facto situation, I am interested in the de jure situation
In which case I would recommend this as a starting point, noting it was written in 2018. But if legal questions are your specific interest, then everything in it is still valid:
https://yalelawjournal.org/essay/presidential-power-to-terminate-international-agreements

thank you!
The author is arguing a specific angle with the answer of "no, they shouldn't be able to unilaterally do this", but their arguments are pretty well put out and relevant law/cases cited properly.
However, it does seem to be a fairly common legal opinion, but it was one of the only ones I could find quickly that wasn't paywalled
There's also this piece, which has a bit more of a historical view on the matter looking at Congress' general unwillingness to interfere with Executive power, noting that that unwillingness hasn't always been a thing. But it's been long enough it may as well be considered normal now:
When does the U.S. President have the constitutional authority to withdraw from a treaty unilaterally? Where the U.S. Constitution details the making but not the exiting of treaties, the U.S. Supreme Court has largely left the issue open for the political branches to resolve. Many scholars argue that modern practice supports a conclusion that th...
Same conclusion though: "No, the President shouldn't have this power, but there's no practical constraint on stopping them."
Pretty good for the historical background on Congressional actions though

Trump on Greenland: If we do not do it the easy way, we will do it the hard way. By the way, I am a fan of Denmark. The fact they had a boat land there 500 years ago does not mean they own the land. We will be doing something with Greenland—the nice way, or the more difficult way
On the subject of Greenland (and to a lesser extent, Venezuela), it is instructive to look at the positions and actions of tech and private equity firms. Some of the businessmen close to Trump are already treating it as a fait accompli.
I believe he made his mind up about it in 2020.
For instance, the FT reported this week that "Peter Thiel, who wants to set up crypto-empowered 'network states' on undeveloped territory, has invested in Praxis, a start-up that aims to do just that and which has scouted Greenland" and notes that Trump's ambassador to Denmark, Ken Howery, co-founded Paypal with Thiel and Musk.

Another angle on this: early in the Trump administration when the DOGE fiasco was underway, there was talk about turning the US DFC into a sovereign wealth fund, which could help address US supply chain and resource issues by acquiring foreign mines and such (as China does). Treasury secretary Bessant later announced that this would be delayed to deal with debt issues.
In March 2025 Trump appointed Benjamin Black, the son of famous Wall Street investor Leon Black, to head the DFC.
Ben Black has long advocated for investing in mines and ports in Greenland, and wrote a piece calling for diverting foreign aid into "pro-market" strategic investments:
https://www.nytimes.com/2025/02/26/business/usaid-dfc-ben-black.html
The interesting detail is that Trump first proposed buying Greenland in summer of 2020. A few months later, Ben Black founded a private equity firm called Fortinbras Enterprises, a PE firm aiming to invest in strategic locations outside the US.
To get slightly imaginative, Fortinbras is the name of the minor character in Hamlet who shows up at the end and takes over Denmark without any resistance because the royal family all died.

Video of Powell statement https://www.threads.com/@aaronparnas/post/DTZBioqksLD
transcript of statement by Federal Reserve Chair Jerome H. Powell, Jan 11 2026
Good evening.
On Friday, the Department of Justice served the Federal Reserve with grand jury subpoenas threatening a criminal indictment related to my testimony before the Senate Banking Committee last June. That testimony concerned, in part, a multi-year project to renovate historic Federal Reserve office buildings.
I have deep respect for the rule of law and for accountability in our democracy. No one, certainly not the chair of the Federal Reserve is above the law. But this unprecedented action should be seen in the broader context of the administration's threats and ongoing pressure. This new threat is not about my testimony last June or about the renovation of the Federal Reserve buildings. It is not about Congress's oversight role. The Fed, through testimony and other public disclosures, made every effort to keep Congress informed about the renovation project.
Those are pretexts.
The threat of criminal charges is a consequence of the Federal Reserve setting interest rates, based on our best assessment of what will serve the public, rather than following the preferences of the President. This is about whether the Fed will be able to continue to set interest rates based on evidence and economic conditions, or whether instead, monetary policy will be directed by political pressure or intimidation.
I have served at the Federal Reserve under four administrations, Republicans and Democrats alike. In every case, I have carried out my duties without political fear or favor, focused solely on our mandate of price stability and maximum employment. Public service sometimes requires standing firm in the face of threats.
I will continue to do the job the Senate confirmed me to do with integrity and a commitment to serving the American people.
Thank you.

Three former heads of the central bank say the probe seeks to undermine the Fed's independence and "has no place" in the US.
[Tillie] Martinussen, who served in Greenland's parliament from 2018 to 2021 as the only representative of the Cooperation Party she co-founded, believes the territory's political leaders are dangerously unprepared for what is coming.
Greenlandic politicians have always been able to shout at Denmark and have always felt protected by the US, she said.
They cannot fathom that the world is changing.
The overconfidence is showing, she believes.
Greenland's Foreign Minister has floated the idea of negotiating with the US alone, bypassing Denmark, which is constitutionally responsible for the island's foreign policy, entirely.
Meanwhile, tensions between Danish and Greenlandic parliamentarians erupted this week in an angry video call, with Greenland accusing Denmark of "neo-colonial" behaviour.
"I think Greenlandic politicians tend to be a little bit naive," she said.
"I don't think that our political leaders quite understand just how big and bad the world actually is."
She believes Donald Trump is "crazy enough" to deploy special forces to the island without congressional approval, catching Greenland completely off guard.

joint statement from former fed insiders, treasure officials, and economists on the federal reserve
The Federal Reserve’s independence and the public’s perception of that independence are critical for economic performance, including achieving the goals Congress has set for the Federal Reserve of stable prices, maximum employment, and moderate long-term interest rates. The reported criminal inquiry into Federal Reserve Chair Jay Powell is an unprecedented attempt to use prosecutorial attacks to undermine that independence. This is how monetary policy is made in emerging markets with weak institutions, with highly negative consequences for inflation and the functioning of their economies more broadly. It has no place in the United States whose greatest strength is the rule of law, which is at the foundation of our economic success.

Press Release: https://fine.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=118
Is there anyone here with military/legal expertise who knows whether what Congressman Fine is endorsing, attacking a NATO Ally for territory (even on the grounds of National Security), would fall clearly in the category of illegal orders?
The proposed bill is pretty short, only 18 lines long. The relevant line is
The President is authorized to take such steps as may be necessary, including by seeking to enter into negotiations with the Kingdom of Denmark, to annex or otherwise acquire Greenland as a territory of the United States.
The authorization is pretty vague though the specific call-out to negotiations is supposed to be treated as the most extreme action authorized by the bill. But because the bill doesn't restrict the President from any actions in the "as may be necessary" means a lot of leeway.
For the question of it being an illegal order: no. If the bill passes and is signed by the President then it is a law and, by definition, the directive to acquire Greenland is legal.

Hi @shadow raven & @midnight oar , please remember this is a research server.
World central bank heads back Powell in letter.
The signatories in full are:
Andrew Bailey, governor of the Bank of England
Christine Lagarde, president of the European Central Bank
Erik Thedéen, governor of Sveriges Riksbank
Christian Kettel Thomsen, chairman of the Danmarks Nationalbank
Martin Schlegel, chairman of the Swiss National Bank
Michele Bullock, governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia
Tiff Macklem, governor of the Bank of Canada
Chang Yong Rhee, governor of the Bank of Korea
Gabriel Galípolo, governor of the Banco Central do Brasil
François Villeroy de Galhau, chair of the Bank for International Settlements
Pablo Hernández de Cos, general manager of the Bank for International Settlements
Highlighting from the story:
North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis, a Republican who is a member of the Senate Banking Committee, said he would oppose the nomination of Powell's replacement by Trump, and any other Fed Board nominee, until the matter was "fully resolved".
The committee must approve the next Fed nominee so if Tillis keeps that pledge, it could delay the nomination of any Trump pick to replace Powell.

We have subsidized Denmark, and all of the Countries of the European Union, and others, for many years by not charging them Tariffs, or any other forms of remuneration. Now, after Centuries, it is time for Denmark to give back — World Peace is at stake! China and Russia want Greenland, and there is not a thing that Denmark can do about it. They currently have two dogsleds as protection, one added recently. Only the United States of America, under PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP, can play in this game, and very successfully, at that! Nobody will touch this sacred piece of Land, especially since the National Security of the United States, and the World at large, is at stake. On top of everything else, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, The United Kingdom, The Netherlands, and Finland have journeyed to Greenland, for purposes unknown. This is a very dangerous situation for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Planet.
These Countries, who are playing this very dangerous game, have put a level of risk in play that is not tenable or sustainable. Therefore, it is imperative that, in order to protect Global Peace and Security, strong measures be taken so that this potentially perilous situation end quickly, and without question. Starting on February 1st, 2026, all of the above mentioned Countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, The United Kingdom, The Netherlands, and Finland), will be charged a 10% Tariff on any and all goods sent to the United States of America. On June 1st, 2026, the Tariff will be increased to 25%. This Tariff will be due and payable until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland. The United States has been trying to do this transaction for over 150 years. Many Presidents have tried, and for good reason, but Denmark has always refused. Now, because of The Golden Dome, and Modern Day Weapons Systems, both Offensive and Defensive, the need to ACQUIRE is especially important. Hundreds of Billions of Dollars are currently being spent on Security Programs having to do with “The Dome,” including for the possible protection of Canada, and this very brilliant, but highly complex system can only work at its maximum potential and efficiency, because of angles, metes, and bounds, if this Land is included in it. The United States of America is immediately open to negotiation with Denmark and/or any of these Countries that have put so much at risk, despite all that we have done for them, including maximum protection, over so many decades. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

verizon gets FCC unlocking waiver based on dubious, disingenuous reasoning (originally put in place as condition for approving a merger)
Verizon and FCC Chairman Brendan Carr have justified longer locking periods as a method of deterring fraud. When approving Verizon’s waiver request, the Carr FCC said the Verizon rule “required one wireless carrier to unlock their handsets well earlier than standard industry practice, thus creating an incentive for bad actors to steal those handsets for purposes of carrying out fraud and other illegal acts.”
Consumer advocacy groups disputed the argument, telling the FCC that “Verizon offers no specific evidence that a longer lock period would have prevented the fraudulent acquisition of the devices it identifies,” and that Verizon is capable of detecting and responding to fraud within 60 days of a phone’s activation. Consumers and small carriers will be hurt by the decision, the groups told the FCC, saying that automatic unlocking “facilitates the resale and reuse of mobile devices, reduces e-waste, and enables low-cost carriers and MVNOs to compete on a more level playing field.”

While this article seems to indicate Canada is definitely on board, that's not what I'm hearing from Canadian media including this CBC video where it's conditional
CBS might be considered compromised now with its reporting, I think, thanks for sharing the Canadian news.
I was thinking of possible compromise when I realized the article from CBS is updated today but I've been hearing this from PM Carney for at least a couple of days. For the last two to three years, I've spent part of my day listening to English language news podcasts from around the world, several from Canada, along with Great Britain, Australia and South Africa. Now, I'm going to be listening out for news of any other countries where participation might be conditional

First graf: President Trump said he won’t impose tariffs on several European nations after he reached the “framework of a future deal” on Greenland and the Arctic region with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.

Related: US wants basically to have exclusive investment rights in certain areas of Greenland. Like the "minerals" deal with Ukraine in some ways. I think this was going to be the eventual outcome after US Joint Chiefs of Staff ruled out military action against NATO (lol).

Greenland deal commits 🇺🇸 and 🇬🇱 + allies to:
1) no tariffs
2) renegotiation of 1951 agreement allowing stationing of US troops
3) US say on investments
4) stronger European security commitment in 🇬🇱
Sources close to talks tell me. Details still to be agreed.
We took a deep dive into Trump's tariffs, and his real approach became painfully clear.Make tariff threats, extract money from companies willing to pay, then grant exceptions to those who play the game. It's another lucrative scam for a wildly corrupt president.

The President is trying to sue to prevent all DoJs from *EVER* releasing the second volume of the Jack Smith report.
Given that Smiths testimony on volume one is public later this week, it suggests his Greenland antics could be part of his cover-up effort.
As a
Greenland certainly could be part of this but Trump has also said his negotiating tactic is to demand something really big and then get the other side flustered then ask for something less as if he's giving them something by not asking for the big thing. Greenland obviously is following in this pattern. But that doesn't mean it can't be doing two or even three things at once.

oh so this one isn't from vigorous handshaking?
his hand doesn't look so good still
https://bsky.app/profile/carlquintanilla.bsky.social/post/3mczjhkyl6k2l
That's his other hand, which I don't think we've seen with a lot of bruising like the right one.
He has shared openly that he uses more aspirin daily than his doctors want him to - which can lead to bleeding and brusing. https://www.health.harvard.edu/heart-health/aspirin-and-bruising
Taking low-dose aspirin may increase bruising and minor bleeding from small cuts. Minor bleeding does not necessarily indicate a greater likelihood of experiencing major bleeding....
I think that is very much overthinking it. It could also be that he's gotten into his head that he has to take aspirin+ and they just want him to take a responsible dose.
But most of all, this is speculation that we have no way of verifying.
- also note that he has been taking it for a long time and what may not be standard practice now, may have been more common then.
There has been recent changes to the recommended scheduling for this OTC method of cardiovascular disease prevention. From UCLA, 2022 (https://www.uclahealth.org/news/article/daily-aspirin-no-longer-recommended-to-prevent-heart-disease), but in breif; it is generally no longer recommended that seniors take low-dose aspirin daily due to an increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding/ulcers unless they are already at high risk of heart disease. Its important to remember that general medical practice for decades, at least since the 90s, was to do this even before symptoms would begin at or around age 60, so "old habits die hard" does legitimately apply; Trump easily could have been taking exceedinglyhigher doses of aspirin daily for almost 20 years at this point. That Trump is using the regular adult dose is the issue, when even low-dose is no longer recommended, though the author does not seem to be aware. Just as likely could be that Trump has been advised, in accordance with current medical recommendations, to not take any aspirin daily by his physician staff, but if the reporting can't even get the current recommendations right its hard to say how accurate their other reporting on this could be.
I wonder if his doctors have him on additional blood thinners at this point, considering theres a lot of speculation he is hiding a previous stroke event
the bruising on his hands looks like the result of repeated IV sticks + blood thinners
I imagine he is quite a hard stick further up the arm
Let's stop this speculation here, please.

For context, the full block of text around the screenshot:
Stagnation was a choice. We have weighed down our builders and innovators. The well-intentioned regulatory regime of the 1970s became an ever-tightening ratchet, first hampering America’s ability to become a net-energy exporter and then making it harder and harder to build. We seem to have lost focus and vision, to have lowered our sights and let systems and structures and bureaucracies muddle us along.
But we are capable of so much more.
Our technologies permit us to manipulate time and space. They leave distance annihilated, cause things to grow, and improve productivity.
As Vice President Vance said in a recent speech, the tradition of American innovation has been one of increasing the capacities of America’s workers, of extending human ability so that more people can do more, and, more meaningful work. But unrestricted immigration, and reliance on cheap labor both domestically and offshore, has been a substitute for improving productivity with technology.
We can build in new ways that let us do more with less, or we can borrow from the future. We have chosen to borrow from the future again and again. Our choice as a civilization is technology or debt. And we have chosen debt.
Today we choose a better way.

On Saturday, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi sent a letter indicating that the Trump Administration intended to use this voter data to advance its anti-immigrant agenda – telling Minnesota the violence in that state would end if it complied with several illegal orders, including handing over data similar to what is being sought in the lawsuit filed against Oregon. After reviewing that letter and hearing arguments from legal representation for all interested parties, U.S. District Court Judge Mustafa Kasubhai dismissed the Oregon case in full, making an earlier tentative ruling final.
