Complicated political situation in Slovakia

Since there seems to be an interest about it. Id like to share here little insight of current political situation in 🇸🇰. As it is currently very turbulent and unclear even for our citizens. Even more for foreginers.

The country currently seems to be supporting Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression. But political scene (and citizens) of the country are under heavy hybrid warfare attack. Many of us fear, the next election (which can be rather early) might bring country to pro-russian partys hands.

I will try to keep it as much facts as possible and suppress my feeling, but it might be very hard for me, since I am born and living in Slovakia. 🙃

It was during discussion about USA - SLOVAKIA defending contract.

Those two guys with 🇸🇰 flag are members of far right part LSNS (who endorse Slovak president from nazi occupation era Josef Tiso).

The two with 🇺🇦 flag are members of SaS party. At the moment of incident it was government party. Now they are in oposition as they left gov. Than started vote to put down our government (and now trying to reestablish new government without Igor Matovic, who is subject of its own thread to be made).

Even the fall of 🇸🇰 government is not related to Ukraine support.

It started after SMER lost elections in 2020 and theirs rule ended after 12 years (because of Jan and Martina murder).

Igor Matovic, highly populist and christian, owner of OLANO party (owner, because its not real party, they have no internal structure, he rules it), won elections.
He joined forces with SME RODINA party, of billionare Boris Kollar, owner of ALOT of assets in Slovakia (rumored to have deep connections to Slovak mafia).

3rd partvof new gov was SaS of Richard Sulik, who claims to be libertarian and deep economist. In fact, he is libertarian only in economics, his opinions on everything else are very controversial. He even claims it himself, saying he has no emotions or empathy, je only decides by numbers (to his defense, hes only interested in economic questions and not trying to solve problems in other fields).

4th party was ZA LUDI of former president Andrej Kiska. Who left the party shortly after elections and the party members are being slowly absorbed by other parties.

After new gov was formed, Matovic and Sulik started to fight. Which resulted in removing Igor Matovic as PM and making him Ministry of Finance, that was March 2021. He basically switched positions with Edurad Heger, who moved from Ministrybof Finances to PM. Rest of the gov stayed pretty much same.

Igor Matovic was unable to bring up national budget which would Richard Sulik consider acceptable, and that lead to SaS leaving government 31.8.2021. Which means that goverment has lost majority in pairlament.

About the budget, there was alot of dpending and it was very unclear where those money will come from. Deeply increasing dept.

After weeks of Matovics party personal attacks on Richard Sulik, SaS initiated confidence vote of the government, which did not passed. Pairlament expressed it does not trust current gov and president had to put them into resignation.

After days, SaS and Eduard Heger negotiated that Igor Matovic will end as Ministrybof Finance, while approving changes to national budget (one of the changes is spending limits).

Now both OLANO and SaS claim they dont want to end current gov (as a result of pirlament expressing untrust in it). And they even claim intention of SaS returning to gov.

The problem is, chaotic rule of OLANO and especially constant fighting of Igor Matovic and Richard Sulik, bring most of the citizens to be pretty much feed up with current gov (pool says only 18% of citizens support Igor Matovic, lowest of all relevant politicans).

And that means, the next elections can bring back to power former PM Robert Fico, who has gone hardcore pro-russian and anti-EU since his fall in 2020.

While pools seems to be winning his former puppet PM Peter Pellegrini with his HLAS party (full of former Fico's people), Fico's SMER is expected to be 2nd, with far-right "conservative" REPUBLIKA party, having coalition with them and forming next Slovak Government.

Both SMER and REPUBLICA claims to be heavily anti-system, pro-russia and anti-EU. While HLAS claims to be "neutral", going to rule with "anybody interested".

Biggest issue is that democratic forces are heavily shattered, there is 6+ parties at the edge of entering pairlament (5%), while each of them claiming they are the hero who will save 🇸🇰. Unable to consolidate and win next elections.

This is the enviroment, in which 🇸🇰 is under the danger of premature elections (as the regular ones should be in 2024).

The fact is, most of the nation is democratic, pro-EU, pro-West and support 🇺🇦 in its effort to defend itself. But there is currently no relevant political party ro satisfy them. The pools do not show increasing % of SMER, HLAS or far fight. They are only transfering theirs electorate from one party to other. Pro-democratic voters are not moving to them, but expressing they will not vote for anybody instead, as they have noone to represent theirs opinion.

There are no anti UA support demonstrations in Slovakia. The video he posted is from 2018, when Slovakia was protesting against Robert Fico's government after assasination of journalist Jan and his girlfriend Martina.

Both SaS and Eduard Heger claim this as the end of political crisis in 🇸🇰 (which officially or unoficially lasted for entire 2022).

But the truth is, that SMER and far-right REPUBLIKA enforced referendum to end current government rule prematurely.

The referendum will be in January 2023 and while most of the citizens are really annoyed with current government and want to end it. They dont want the return of SMER either.

Referendum itself is highly speculative. Many analytics say, SMER does not really want it to happen, since despite having many lawyers (while Robert Fico is not only lawyer himself, but he was also candidate for constitutional court judge too), the questions were reformulated many times because they were very vaguely formulated or in conflict with Slovak constitution.

Also even if the referendum passed, end of they current government is highly questionable, as the referendum question asks, if people want to "add possibility to end government rule prematurely into constitution", not specificaly saying that this current government should end right now.

So this referendum, while being taken very seriously by alot of politicans and citizens, can be only elections campaign of former PM Robert Fico and his SMER party.

Since I still have time until things will start happening agsin after holidays, lets look at what I mean by "pro-EU and pro-WEST voters have currently no party to pick".

This is the result of elections in 2020. I am not going to describe it much, since as it is "good habit" in Slovakia, alot of parties have shattered after elections or "died" and changed the power distribution.

Important here is, OLANO, won the elections unprepated, they are one man party and did not have enough people to fill all its spots.
PS-Spolu candidated as coalition (so they needed 7% to get in, instead of 5% for single party). They acted like they are going to win during campaign but did not get into pairlament with 6,98%.

In next post, I will show current state of power distribution and will try to cover each party little bit.

What is the general European party affiliation?

I think they are all in different parties. SMER are with "social democrats" (not sure about the name). SaS is with ECR, OLANO is European Peoples Party.

LSNS is far right as you already know and SME RODINA is quite fresh, I dont think they are in Europairlament

SME Rodina have affiliated with Identity and Democracy, hmm.

So all round a quite right-wing parliament.

But europairlament means nothing in Slovakia. People do not care about it, and most of them wouldnt be able to name one euro party.

For example SMER has long history of being in conflict with its euro party for violating theirs value setup. And they dont seem to care about it even a little.

Yes. But the party of the candidate is not significant. Its party of Vladimir Meciar ex-ministry of justice and well known conspirator Stefan Harabin. He went completely mad into conspiracy theories, far right, anti-covid, etc after his fall in justice administration. His party is at about 1% or so, completely insignificant.

However, the murder have had strong impact on 🇸🇰 society. Most politicans failed to express strong opinion against LGBTI opression. Good example is PM Eduard Heger who expressed strong pro-LGBTI statement in foreigin media (and english status on twitter), but very very vague statement in Slovak version. Where he did not even mentioned the LGBTI being motive of the murder.

His party leader Matovic even released status on Facebook: "I AM HETERO".

And they keep pushing nareative of "liberal putsch", how religious people in Slovakia are being opressed by liberals (they are not).

Seems like the issue is mainly that the country is so heavily attacked by disinformation (Kremlin likely IIRC) that so much confusion has been made that the majority, which is democratic and pro-humanity, thinks they are lost and left alone, they think they don't know what to do

They are basically trying to blind peoples eyes with this "liberals gonna steal your kids n make them gay" narrative, to hide their incompetence. As they have been elected as "anti-corruption" government, but failed to do a single systematic anti-corruption change in 2 years.

That was meant to be the current gov. But they burned most of the hopes during this electorate.

OLANO as christian/conservatives.
SaS as liberals.

Neither of them is what they claims to be.

There are new ones, but those are mostly unknown names, new faces and people dont trust them. In Slovakia there is more than 50 political parties and the pro-democratic parties keep shattering into smaller and smaller pieces. Everybody wants to be the leader who will save the nation.

I will try to cover that tomorrow with insight of current force disposition in pairlament. Its getting late here (2am).

OLANO is meant to be the conservatives. But in fact, they are party of one man (Igor Matovic), without any internal structures. He invited few christian sects into his gov. Their agenda is mostly abortions, anti-liberalism, religious freedom (immunity to catholic priests), anti imigrants, etc.

SaS is meant to be liberals (their name literally means Freedom and Solidarity), BUT their leader Richard Sulik is strongly anti-mighrants, free market, lower the gov support to ppl etc. I mean, his macro economic changes are good (tax politics, spending limits, etc). But when he starts to speak about humanity values, he drifts into racist stuff, some might event find it slightly nazi..not sure if you know what I mean.

For the context, last elections, in 2020 meant to be revolutionary. Those have been basically right after murder of journalist Jan and his girlfriend Martina.

As it was clear 12 years of Robert Fico's rule is going to end after huge protests, society not only expected but demanded change in corrupt system. So called "democratic right" not only won elections but they managed to get "constitutional majority", which means, they have had enough votes to change constitution themselves.

But soon after elections, it was clear no major changes will happen. Igor Matovic keept trying to lead the country like one of his companies, or his party. He keeps bringing up ridiculous, miraculous ideas how to solve every problem he focus on. If anybody dare to opose him, he started to publicly shame darer and yell that its all to support return of Robert Fico and his mafia.

That means constant fight between Matovic and Sulik and resulted into first fall of this government in 2021, when all happened was that Matovic and his ministry of finance switched positions. Now Heger is PM and Matovic ministry of finance. However Heger is merely a pupped of his OLANO party leader and does not dare to opose him even slightly.

Constant fighting between Matovic and Sulik continue and nation is already fed up with "democratinc right". Voters say, while Ficos rule was mafia state, it was still better than this rule of mad Matovic, many believing he is mentally ill.

Many voters dont want to risk voting for new unknown party just to find out there will be another crazy Matovic and Sulik, inclining to vote for Ficos SMER or his for puppet pellegrini and his HLAS party full of ex-SMER politicans. "They have been mafia state but at least it was not chaos and madness".

People say, if Matovic wanted the return of Fico, he would not do it differently.

Now lets look at current power transposition in 🇸🇰 pairlament and what I mean by "no alternative for democratic middle class citizens".

As picture above shows, those are currently significant parties in Slovakia.

OLANO - winner of the elections. It is party of one man, Igor Matovic, with no internal or regional structures. They are basically random "ordinary" people with no bonds between them. Matovuc claims to give a chance to enter politics to anybody who want to get into pairlament but dont want to enter "ordinary" party. From outside it seems to be full of sportsmen, celebrities and so on. However under the hood it is secret coallition of different catholic sub-churches some say sects. They claimed and acted to be anti-corruption party before 2020 elections but have heavily populistic agenda, anti-migrants, anti-LGBTI, anti-liberalist after.

SMER - party of Robert Fico. So called social democrats. They have ruled Slovakia for 12 years until 2020. They are taken responsible for high corruption and state mafia in 🇸🇰. Their agenda is leftist, focused on lowest income citizens while hiding and protecting theirs oligarchs. After murder of Jan and Martina in 2018 they have been believed politicslly dead but Robert Fico is excellent rhetor and (with huge help of current incompetent gov) managed to make comeback.

HLAS - party created by former PM Peter Pellegrini, by detaching from SMER. He has inherited agenda and most of his party members from SMER shortly after 2020 elections. Most likely because he was under impression that SMER is dead party (he was not the only one thinking that).

SME RODINA - party of millionare Boris Kollar, owner of many big assets in Slovakia, for example he owns few sky resorts, radio station, etc. His party is similar to OLANO (but its not descendant of OLANO, more like clone). Unclear or non-existent internal structure, party full of celebrities instead of politics. His agenda is highly populistic, anti-migrants, conservatives, etc. He is famous lover, openly having 12 children with 11 women and just like that he claims to be conservative fighter for "traditional family". Big forces in his party are: catholic activist Milan Krajniak (he calls himself "the last crusader") and Pcolinsky family who are rumored to be mafia family in east of Slovakia. Boris Kollar is also known for connections with mafia, famous is his photo from 90's with bosses of the mafia at that time from vacation in Florida (he claims it was coincidence he meet them there), he was also welcoming Putins Night wolves in Bratislava. Many of Boris's "business partners" were killed by mafia during wild west time period of Slovakias privatization in 90's while he is still alive and one of the richest.

LSNS - political party of long term extremist Marian Kotleba. Openly praising president of Slovak facist president Jozef Tiso. Party was forcibly disbanded in past by court, but they formed new one. Classic far-right agenda, anti-EU, anti-NATO, pro-russian. Openly attacking: gipsy community, muslims, sexual and other minorities etc..I think you know exactly what I mean. They use same double cross symbol as facist Slovak state paramilitary forces "Hlinkove gardy". Very agressive rhetorics. They even form militias to "protect majority population from gipsy minority".

SAS - so called liberals. Party of Richard Sulik, successful businessman who is interested mostly in economy questions and healthy market enviroment. However he is also notorious for connections with controversial businessman Marian Kocner currently in jail for connections with Jan and Martina murder. His humanitarian values driftvto far right, he himself stated that he has no emotions and decide only by numbers. Rest of the "liberal agenda" of the party like LGBTI rights, marihuana legalisation, etc is represented only formally, but there are no real steps made by tge party to enforce them.

PS (Progresivne Slovensko) - party founded by tech milionare Michal Truban. They have had high success in last euro-elections as a newly founded subject and many (including themselves) believed they will win elections in 2020 and form new government and new democratic coallition. However Michal Truban was not able to manage well campaign against him and the fact that they officially admitted coallition with SPOLU (which raised their treshold from 5% to 7%) put them out of pairlament. They however gained some representatives in pairlament after elections. Party is trying to have internal democratic structure and processes and not to be one man party as most of Slovak parties. However they are labelled as commies and "liberals who will steal your kids n sell them to gays" and Slovak highly conservative public does not accepts them very well. They are closest to normal party as we have in Slovakia, but they struggle in finding charismatic leader which is big disadvantage in Slovakia. Nobody reads agenda here, elections are decides by best slogan and rhetorics. Also churches push narrative that progressive means evil. Their activities in euro pairlament are mostly eco oriented, but Slovakua has more pressing troubles: low trust in gov, low trust in police and law enforcement, collapsing healthcare, collapsing education.

REPUBLIKA - another party that got into pairlament by shattering of the bigger party. Republika was founded by former LSNS vice-presidents Mazurek and Uhrik. They are believed to be smarter and more extremist than LSNS leader Marian Kotleba. After they failed to claim power in LSNS, they have formed REPUBLIKA, which has same agenda but is not so openly far-right. However they still affiliate to facist president Tiso and the name Republika is link to first CzechoSlovak republic. Uhrik is famous for his answer to question, if he believes Holocaust happened, where he said "I am not a historican, I dont know". And Mazurek is famous for attacking muslim family with infant in stroller. They are heavily pro-russian, anti-EU and anti-NATO, currently forming coallition with Ficos and his SMER.

SMER is also Kremlinphile, it's extremely fucked up that somehow the information sphere is making them the "better option"

So what we have here really is OLANO, a private company that presents itself as a party and is from extremely questionable origin and has a vague structure

And SMER, which is a Kremlinphile Oligarchs party

Yes and no. Almost noone knows what real, formal policies of theirs party is. People dont read it. They believe what leaders say in the TV discusdions their policies are (often not matching).

People voting for policies is rare overall (and I mean this worldwide, not specific to Slovakia), politics are almost (if not fully) entirely emotional, with people supporting leaders/parties like they would with a sports team

I mean, the need for anti-corruption gov is pretty clear here, but the problem is, none of the parties want to change the system. They all promise to make thing better by replacing "theirs people" with "ours people", not sure if u understand me.

Well, thats very unclear. They adorse Orban and his "conservative" politics. But at the same time sending weapons to Ukraine. Eduard Heger as PM was in Kyiiv, but Matovic during pandemics bought and defended Sputnik vaccine.

They really are not one subject. Its more of a buch of individual politics with different interests under one label. Like a patchwork

Jaroslav Nad, our ministry of defense, is sending weapons and strong pro-USA and pro-Ukraine statements, while other big names of OLANO are defending Orban

BUT, I do not think (or hope) that OLANO will be significant power after next elections.

As I said, Matovic is most unpopular politic in 🇸🇰 where more than 80% of population dislikes him

There are no real measurments to fight disinfo. In fact, many of govs use disinfo webs as theirs spreading network. OLANO, SME RODINA, SMER, HLAS, both nazi LSNS and REPUBLIKA too. They all feed on disinfo scene

Most anti-disinfo scene is either volunteers or minor activities. Police has some activiries but very minor

Same situation here in Spain, our MoD Margarita Robles has been the main push for military aid towards Ukraine, as the smaller of the two coalition members in the government (yet very vocal) is very much a group of tankies who blame NATO for the war

At least the public sentiment is very much more in favour of supporting Ukraine, although the idea of military support is something that can understandably be hard to digest for many

Another "big name" in Slovak democratic side, core member of SaS and member of euro-pairlament Lucia Duris-Nicholsonova announced yesterday that she is going to create new political party, to save 🇸🇰.

PM Eduard Heger today announced, that he will be not able to create new government, because SaS does not want to sign it.

He announced earlier (during Christmas I think) that he is trying to find 76 signatures of representatives to form new gov. However many lawyers arguend it is not possible, as his government was ended when pairlament did not support him.

Anyway, the possibility of premature elections in 🇸🇰 happening this year is getting higher. (September is being talked about).

The referendum have had literally no campaign. Only Facebook mobilization of SMER and far-right voters + few local actions in some districts. But nothing on country scale.

Still, number of votes, for "Yes" is 1 100 000.
If we project those 1 100 000 votes into average elections attendance in Slovakia, SMER and far-right would get about 40% in next elections. (OLANO won with 27% in 2020 and it was considered "very strong manadate").

Needs to be said, Kacer was Slovak ambassador in Hungary for many years. He speaks Hungarian fluently. He is almost unknown for Slovak public, he was not publicly active before he got Ministry of Foreigin affair post.

Also, Hungary and Slovakia have "strange" relationship. Its not brotherhood like with Czech.
Its not neutral like with Poland and Austria.

Since divide of CzechoSlovakia, there allways have been strong anti-Hungarian but also pro-Hungarian movements in 🇸🇰 politics.

Famous is politician Jan Slota, leader of nationalist SNS during Meciar regime and his anti-hungary attitude, who said: "we will jump into tanks and destroy Budapest".

There are also Hungary nationalists from SMK, with similar attitude but opposite direction.

Needs to be said, south parts of 🇸🇰, where Hungary minority is living, does not get that much of an investment in infrastructure as North part (mainly because all major cities are on the North route). South regions are less developed historically, but (and maybe because of that) there was strong pro-Hungarian feeling in those regions historically. Many of people living there speak Hungarian fluent but very weak Slovak (Hungarian is not official language in Slovakia).

There was a scandal few years ago, where 🇸🇰 media pointed out, about director of Slovnaft plant, mr.Villagi(Hungarian name). He was using alot of money coming from Hungary, with unclear origing, to buy real estate in south regions of 🇸🇰.

Some people even say, that 🇸🇰 south is owned by Orban. It was serious enough, that it was being resolved diplomatic way. Probably mr.Kacer was involved as he was ambassador in Budapest at that time.

The "Modra Koalicia", project of former PM Mikulas Dzurinda (the one who got 🇸🇰 into EU and NATO after Meciars dark regime). Leader of party SPOLU, which was to be core of "Modra koalicia" announced that Dzurinda is not joining them and the party will change name again. That means, this new Dzurindas project broke up before it even got together. Instead, current PM Eduard Heger and Defense ministry Jaroslav Nad with some more ex-OLANO(the "pro democratic" fraction) are joining SPOLU.

Ministry of Healthcare, Lengvarsky, resignated. I dont know the details, however president of 🇸🇰 Zuzana Caputovas reaction was, that if there will be "no improvements in healthcare resort", she will appoint administrative government.

First 4 MiG-29 left Slovak airspace today at lunch time.

UA pilots came to Slovak Air Force base Sliač with technicans. They did some modifications on site then flew those jets to Ukraine.

Rest of the MiGs are probably not able to fly and will be transported by ground in short time.

Igor Matovics proposal to pay 500€ for a vote in elections did not pass. Voting in pairlament was today.

HOWEVER, he again managed to piss whole country.

There is a law, that if new law proposal is rejected, there cant be same proposal in pairlament for at least half year.

What Igor did, he put the exactly same proposal shortly before todays vote. Which means, he could have another vote for 500€ in May. Lawyers are now discussing if he found the hole in the law or if the second proposal is to be declined.

PS: The 500€ got only 32 out of 150 votes in pairlament.

To be honest, I do not believe SMER will exit EU or NATO. Fico is after money, and Russia will not provide as much money as EU. No way at all..

But, they can very likely cooperate together to turn 🇸🇰 into something like Orbans Hungary.

Fico already announced he will hunt down many journalists that are against him. And HLAS will not stand against it.

pro-west spectrum is decimated by egos. There are 2 bigger (around 4%) and about 2 or 3 smaller parties (under 3%) that refuse to merge.
However, they ask voters to vote for them, instead of PS, "else PS will have noone to make coalition with". 🙄

Also, one funny story. Leader of KDH (Christian Democratic Party) Milan Majersky called LGBTI a "plague" in the live TV debate. When one of the viewers asked him, what is worse, if corruption or LGBTI. He said "both are plague".

Election campaign in 🇸🇰 has ended this midnight. We are officialy in moratorium. However, it means nothing on the internet.

BUT, the polls, or trends in them show PS strenghtening, growing. While SMER slowly decreasing.

SMER is however still first, but with very small margin.

However, the real question is, if either PS or SMER will have someone to make coallition with, as key partners of both of them:
Republika and SNS for SMER
SaS and Demokrati for PS

Are way lower than anybody would expect 3 months ago.

This saturday will be thrilling.

From the other "big players", there is Hlas (child of SMER) and KDH. Both of them claim to go into coallition with any party that gives them good offer. But real intentions are unclear. Both claim to not go with Fico, however kn8wing them and the leaders, its far from being 100% sure.

Lastly, winner of 2020 elections, OLANO, is in very strange position. Leader Igor Matovic exceeded expectations with hus extremly agressive campaign. But people seem to have enough of him. He is pushing hard but % is not growing. And because they decided to go to elections as coallition, they have not 5%, but 7% limitto enter pairlament. Which they are very close to.

Also because of the agressive campaing where the attacked very agressively both PS and SMER. It is hardly imagineable to see them in coallition with anybody.

And many voters are asking who is Igor Matovic really fighting against..

Often it looks like he is fighting with the demons inside of his head.

Here is their todays (T -1 day) prediction:

Interesting is, that Republika, far right party that was number 2 in poools at the beginning of the year, is under the 5% limit now.
That can be a result of their leader, Milan Uhrik extremely low performance in big TV debates. Everybody was able to factualy destroy his nazi ass in every debate, including moderators.

Basically, all of the parties except PS and SMER are dancing at the edge of pairlament.

Another interesting fact, is the math. To make coallition, 76 representants is needed (to have more than half representants).

How can one party get 91% in such big pool? I believe there are only 2 options: fraud or bribery.

Some say, Pellegrini has only bad choices.

If he goes with Fico, SMER will eat HLAS. Basically there is no need to have 2 almost identical parties and SMER is famous for canibalising its partners (/wave REPUBLIKA). But not only REPUBLIKA, in each gov, SMER destroyed its weakest coallition member, SIET, MOST-HID, etc..

If he goes with PS, many of his voters can get mad. Based on poolfrom July, 62% of HLAS voters prefer coallition with SMER.

Sooo..the game is on. First week after elections:

Gov version #1: SMER, HLAS, SNS - most likely future Slovak gov. However, rumors say that Pellegrini and Fico cant stand eachother. Fico also allegedly want to be PM, but Pellegrini said before elections that he is not going to join gov where Fico is PM. (But HLAS is not only Pellegrini, so we shall see).

Gov version #2: PS, HLAS, SAS, KDH. This is less likely. The problem here is KDH. They are strongly againat liberal agenda, especially gender stuff. The problem is also KDH leader Majesky. It seems like despite party high council strongly ordered to not join SMER, Majesky is still hoping for joining SMER gov. He was negotiating with SMER already.

So, we have basically 2 clear couples:
SMER + SNS
PS + SAS

Than there is HLAS, which is needed by both of them. And Pellegrini is not huryying it, he knows very well that they need him and most likely trying to milk it as much as possible.

There is also KDH which is in this strange state. SMER does not need it, but PS does. However while KDH high council declined joining SMER, it seems like KDH leader Majesky would rather go with SMER than libeals.

Soo. Today is the first day of Rober Fico's 4th cabinet.

His first day, he announced that Ukraine will get no more military help from Slovakia.

While media and social networks are bashing us. I would like to be a bit "real" here.

Fico is criminal, he is mafia boss, he is villain, etc.. but he is WAY SMARTER than most of peoole are able or wiling to acknowledge.

He can say that there will be no more military help to UA. Because 🇸🇰 already gave everything it could. I mean Slovak armed forces. Its empty words, we wouldnt give anything more regardless if he said it or not. So he used empty words to gather pilitical points. To gain attention. (Not mentioning 🇸🇰 was praised to heaven half year ago for giving Migs, now is being sent to hell for Ficos words).

There is another source of military help in 🇸🇰, the weapon heavy machinery manufacturers. Contracts for Zuzana 2 howitzers, new type of howitzers in cooperation with UA and other private contracts. However, Fico will very unlikely touch those. The military companies are owned by Ficos oligarchs and they are living theirs golden age right now. Those companies were slowly dying. But now, profits are skyrocketing, Fico is not stupid to destroy it.

• EU & NATO. Its nothing new for him, to say one thing at home and something totally different on EU soil. I strongly believe he gives shit about Russia. All he want is money, and he knows very well, that Russia cant give him as much money as he can steal from EU funds. What he will do is most likely to play Russian whore at home and EU citizen in Europairlament.

I have been listening to Ficos speech today. It is very "diplomatic" I say.

He said for example:
"In case of new sanctions against RU, we will not aplly any, WITHOUT study of impact on Slovak economy."

"We will send demining technolgy, medical supplies, and so on, but no weapons to Ukraine."

As I stated here after elections. Previous gov gave everything that Slovak army could. There is nothing more to give except for comercial newly built weapons.

Fico is opportunist and populist. He is not authentic pro-Russian. He will do whatever needs to be done to make his oligarchs and him to earn money and power.

The issue for Fico will be SNS and Danko, who is authentic pro-Russian and was already raising his finger when Fico voted for santions in EU pairlament. Now I expect Danko to also to be not very happy about this statement.

However, the real problem of Slovakia is not UA aid.

New ministry of police (dont know how to say it in English) since taken power, have replaced very high manager in Police, including President of Police.
The investigators who have been working on SMER and HLAS cases during previous government, were disciplined. Their wages were set to minimal ones. Evn though, they have had status of protected witnesses.

Well, yes, the reason of those protests is the prosecution reform. But I would say, alot of people did know Fico will attack lawfulness of our country and were prepared to protests. We just did not know what form his attack will have.

As for the representativeness. I mentioned earlier that protests in Slovakia are generally very rare..and to have protests in other than capial was only once. When Jan Kuciak was murdered. So based on this (protests in smallwr town already were and are planned too), I would say its no joke. People are taking it seriously.

Cant say how representative of population it is. But while Fico won elections, he did not receive alot of votes. Maybe 1 out of 5 is ok with him.

The problem is, people were not voting as 🇸🇰 has literally no pro-west right-wing party. I dont mean life far-right. I mean like oposite to socialists. So people have noone to vote for. As SMER and HLAS are socialists. Also PS while oposing Fico is also kinda leftist party.

One thing that baffles me about this is the fact that some sort of active civil society in SK has, in my eyes, failed in mobilizing people and these protests have to be organized by the opposition. The last time I saw Slovak civil society being active and successfully mobilizing people from all across the political spectrum was after Kuciak and his wife were killed in 2018.

While so called frau Simkovicova is filling all the media attention. I believe her actions are requested by Fico and his party. Because when media put attention to her, visible, but really meaningless action on grand scheme of gov. What Fico is doing ( and what is not getting attention) are changes in criminal law. Lowering not only sanctions for bribery and economical criminality, but also statute of limitations. From 20 to 10 years on case of murder. To 3 years in case of corruption, etc.

New criminal law was accepted by coalition representatives in pairlament today.

Now president will need to sign it (which will most likely not happen).

Also, oposition already stated they will make submission to the constitutional court.

So the high stakes game has started.

One (one of many) cherry of this new criminal law is, that they decreased statute of limitations of RAPE from 20 to 10 years.
They have also lowered statute of limitation and punishments for corruption and bribey, while increasing (already high) ones for drugs, like marihuana for example.

The reform plan is to rename RTVS into STaR ("Slovak Television and Radio") and to dismiss most of its top management, including the head of the channel. A new boss is to be appointed by a council, elected partially by the Ministry of Culture and partially by the parliament, where the ruling coalition has the majority.

While today was main focus on protests, there were also 2 other "interesting" things that happened.

First is alleged cyber attack. Robert Fico made strong statement on press conference whete he said that goverment owned health i surance company and other giv facilities are again under cyber attack. In the light of early January cadastre cyber attack, where ransomware made this institution out of service for more tha 2weeks and counting. It seemed very serious. However, leaked info suggesr that this time, the alleged "cyber attack" was just phishing email.

Second was during protests, where HLAS excluded 2 representatives from its political party. The i teresting about it the fact, that they were group of 4 rebels in HLAS, however, they repelled only 2 of them. Because, if they excluded all 4, coallition would lost its majority in pairlament. 🙃

There really was no reason to go to Moscow as:

1.) Putin/Russia is not the one who did not want to refresh gas transit contract, Ukraine did. So if he would want to convience someone, it would be Zelenskyii not Putin.
2.) President Zelenskyii statet several times, that Ukraine is ready to privide alternatives to Russian gas to Slovakia, they just need someone to talk to, someone who they can make deal with. But nobody from current 🇸🇰 gov showed any interest in dialogue with Ukraine.
3.) During his visit in Moscow, Fico stated it is having negotiations with Putin. BUT 🇸🇰 pairlament never aproved such travel, never asked PM to go to Moscow in the first place, so technically, he did nkt have mandate to do so. When this was spoken openly in public (after public got dissatisfied with his Mosciw visit), he changed. He said it was his "private visit", not official. + its still unclear how he went there, as official 🇸🇰 gov planes were parked in their airport during his visit of Moscow.

Also, nobody knows what they were talking about. + former ministry of foreigin affairs, Rastislav Kacer point out, that Fico talked to Putin "between 4 eyes", whichbis in his opinion wery suspicious, as usually, even if 2 leader talk "privately", there is one diplomat on each side as witnesse.

I would not call Banska Bystrica a Fico stronghold.

It was big stronghold of far-right leader Marian Kotleba (LSNS party), but since the new major of Banska Bystrica took mr. Lunter, jt went pro-democratic.

Ficos long term strongholds are Kysuce region (Cadca, Kysucke Nove Mesto) and Orava region (Namestovo, Dolny Kubin). Thats two regions in north-central Slovakia, close to Polish borders.

Than of course east rural parts like Bardejov, Svidnik, Humenne and so on..thats near the Polish and Ukraine border.

Another case has unfolded this week. Ministry of ecology under Tomas Taraba is allegedly preparing mega project of hydro pump energy storage.

However, while having price tag ove 2 000 000 000 € and trying to mark it as stratecig investition. The information about this project was tried to be hidden for public. BUT the owners of properties could not be excluded (fortunately) and now they are alarming public, since if they manage to mark it as strategic investition, their properties will be expropriated. Which they obviously are not happy about.

What they are pointing at, is that this "strategic investition" gas no real research backing it.

Weak protests today. Its fading. The government has not collapsed, but it has stabilized. Either some spark will emerge or the protests will end.

Fico's cabinet is in very funky situation currently.

To "stabilize" the situation. Andrej Danko, leader of SNS party let his ministry posts go.

The new ministry of Sport will be one of Danko's rebelling members: Rudolf Huliak.

HOWEVER, as Huliak left pairlament, Ficos thin majority in pairlament 76/150 turned into minority 75/150.

And if they want to officially appoint Huliak's replacement into pairlament and name him representative. They need 76 representatives to open the session of pairlament. 🤭

But they have only 75, as 76th, Huliak, was already named a ministry, so he lost his representative function.

The Fico's cabinet member, call on oposition that: "it would be a shame if opposition did not allow to open pairlament session" 🤣 what a fools.

Hello guys, I was not here for some time.

I felt like nothing important was happening. I mean, Slovakia is going through rough times, but there was no event that could nean important change in trajectory. We did know it will be rough once Fico went back.

However, today, I feel like I have to write something. Maybe no significant change of course of our cpuntry, but I feel, like inside of many people in Slovakia, today hapoened something.

Few weeks ago, another wave of Fico-Kamenicky cobsolidation hit 🇸🇰 public and one of the change was, that 17.November will be no bank holiday anymore.

17.November is very impoetant day for Slovakia. It is when CzechoSlovak revolution begun. It marked beginning of fall of communism in CzechoSlovakia.

However, many Slovak citizens did not give as much importance to this day, as it deservers. Honestly, it should be biggest holiday in 🇸🇰, like Independence day in US. But for us, it was "just another holiday".

But I feel like Robert Fico changed it. Unintentionally, it backfired to him hard.

Few weeks ago, aa a part of another consolidation wave of Fico's cabinet, made by Laco Kamnicky, one of the changes was, 17.November is not bank hollidaya anymore.

Slovaks did not care about this day before. But in light of yet another co solidation that hit citizens economy situation hard, but did not decrease bad gov spending situation by tiny bit. Companies slowly started to give this day a day off to all emplyees, even if its not bank holliday. Very slowly, but big part of companies participated. As many as it became standard.

Protests by opposition were planned for this day long ago, but the expectations were not very high.

However, Fico managed to boost the crowd numbers shoetly before it happened.

The Fico vs. students debate in Poprad high school was cancelled, because students did write unpleasant notes on the walkway. Oficially because he was out of schedule.

But the student writting notes on walkway was filmed and eventually taken by police to police station for interrogations. Later that day he was released with no charges, but the story went viral already and there was nothing that cpuld be done to stop it at that point.

The debate took place this friday (I think it was friday). But it did not go as Fico planned. He was verbally attacking students from the position of power. Which they did not take and stood their grounds.

Videos from the debate were published and many of the adults did not like the way, how PM is talking to the youth. To their kids!

As a result, Fico (in my opinion) managed to do, what many others before him failed. Unintentionally.

He managed to make 17.November important for big part of Slovak population, by trying to destroy it.

Todays protests were MASSIVE! There was a protest in every significant city in Slovakia.
Despite extremely bad weather: heavy rain, temperatures coming close to zero °C and strong north wind, 50 000 people in Bratisla alone went out and stood against Fico and his government!
