#TUI flickering in multiple terminal emulators and in tmux

I've recently set up a new Linux machine with Ubuntu 24.04 with my favorite terminal setup (alacritty w/ tmux).

The TUI of dagger v0.21.6 seems to be rendered useless due to massive amounts of flickering, even with low verbosity.

I've encountered this before on an older version of which got fixed at one point - found this thread talking about this - but it seems that the issue has resurfaced.

Does anyone know what might be causing this and why?

The same issue occurs with just the default Terminal shipped along with Ubuntu.

The strange thing is, I'm running Ubuntu 24.04 on the desktop at work and I'm not having this issue with v0.21.6 🫤

Have you tried the new beta? I also had those problems, but they pretty much went away now.

Pulling @hybrid thistle here as he's the master of the TUI 🙂
If I'm right there's a flag that could be use to improve the situation with tmux.
I'd say you can try with TUIST_SYNC=0.

I don't remember if there's any tui fixes between v0.21.6 and the current v0.21.8, worth a try also.

Hey, thanks for the replies, folks.

I've not tried the new beta, yet. Our company network hasn't whitelisted dagger, so I typically need to wait for the "official" release to be made 🙂 .

Interestingly on my work desktop where the TUI works fine, TUIST_SYNC is not set.

I'll see if I can try out later today setting TUIST_SYNC=0 on the laptop.

The setup is the same, with the exact same configuration files for Alacritty and Tmux.

The version of the tools are also the same.

If you are using the same tools, I'd naively said the result should be the same, so maybe there's something different.

This is the same mindset I have. I can't figure out why the flickering would occur.

anything in your dotfiles that could be different? That's weird you have different results

I'm pretty sure that the dotfiles are the same: They've got the same values copied from a personal repo, so shouldn't be different.

I'll see if I can compare them during the day.
