Hello! I am currently in high school and looking at college programs. I really want to do entomology, but I’m not sure if getting an undergrad degree is for me. Is anybody here studying or has studied entomology as an undergrad major? If so, where and how is it? Or if you don’t study it but you’ve heard anything about a specific program at a college, what is it?

If you get an undergrad in entomology, it still provides you the same basic science background that you need to either go straight into a job in whatever field of science that you want to apply knowledge of insects to, such as agriculture, plant pathology, etc.

#

Or you can choose to pursue further education in the field with a master's degree, and provide a more specialized contribution to the scientific community by going into taxonomy or other in-the-field research

#

So even if you decide to do an undergrad in entomology, you are not locked into a single path to take in the future, so ultimately it is your decision what you would like to do with it. Don"t be afraid to try something out, and it is always okay to change your mind if it isn't exactly what you want

#

What grade are you going into?

I’m currently a junior— I still have some time to think about it, but I figure I might as well start now. Thank you for your advice though! It’s stumper helpful and being able to do something else if I figure out it’s not for me has been something I have been concerned about. 🙂

I got my degree in entomology. I went to UC Riverside. All of the faculty are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. I highly recommend. Also, it's a beautiful campus with a botanical garden teeming with all sorts of cool bugs (it also has a small butterfly garden).
