Ever noticed a body ordor of a specific bug? Not talking about any defensive excretions, just their normal body smell.

I had a pair of Oryctes rhinoceros that smelled like coconut, presumably because they fed on a coconut stump before they were caught.

Eudicella morgani and Mecynorhina torquata immaculicollis have their own specific smells. In the case of WC it can be rather strong and doesn’t smell good.

#

Osmoderma sp. have a distinct, patent-leather or peach-like smell. Can be rather nice actually.
Oxythyrea funesta smell sweetish like flowers.
Apparently Cheirotonus sp. have a distinct body smell, not specifically nice though.

Thanks for creating this lars

#

Idk If the smell is defensive, but tenebs like Diaperis boleti and Bolithophagus reticulatus have a really interesting plastic? Smell

dusty vector
#

Bolitophagus have a defensive secretion

graceful marsh
#

i see

shrewd orchid
#

I only have dead bugs but some of them definitely have a distinctive smell to them

#

I've mainly noticed it with Orthoptera, it's not bad, just unique. Kinda grassy which I guess would be expected

#

No clue how it compares for living ones though

compact veldt
#

Not defensive secretions? Hmmm. I'd say Cotinis mutabilis, and they STINK! The odor is unique, like a combination of concentrated pollen and fermented fruit.

rocky wraith
#

Hell yes

#

I’ve been sniffen bees since I was a toddler they smell amazing

#

Always very warm and floraly

dusty vector
#

Yeah as I mentioned above, Oxythyrea funesta too!

#

Both wildcaught ones, which feed on flowers and their offspring from breeding

rocky wraith
#

Anybody smell fire ants?

#

Distressed ants have a very strong smell

#

And I’ve smelled one butterfly so far and she honestly doesn’t smell good

#

Anything that’s been pollinating usually smells good

#

Uhhh six spotted tiger beetles smell like acetic acid

#

Aaand giant millipedes smell BAD

Omg the groom goblets ❤️

#

Wet dead cockroach smells like a small dead animal (shocker) and just one can stink up a whole room if it has bad airflow

dusty vector
rocky wraith
#

Just let me have this. They’re groom goblets ok

dusty vector
#

Trichius smell really good too

torpid rapids
#

Oh hey, it's that discord feature that is incredibly easy to miss and nobody asked for.

Yeah, our Osmoderma probably have the strongest neutral smell, that leathery scent. As you said, not unpleasant but not the best.

#

Male D. tityus also have a pretty distinct smell, our dog does not like them, but is very interested in females. While we were out foraging in late September, we kept getting whiffs of the male smell in the woods, weirdly enough (we are out of their range).

#

Sort of a crisp decayed leaf smell, but more sharp and chemically?

rocky wraith
#

Yea I can kinda agree with that

torpid rapids
#

Real talk tho, can we all agree that pupa smell AMAZING? If we ever need to put any in artificial cells, I gotta yell at @coarse summit to stop huffing the pupa.

coarse summit
#

THEY SMELL SO GOOD

#

Like balsamic vinegar

dusty vector
dusty vector
#

Dynastes tityus

graceful marsh
#

ah, i Wonder why they do that

coarse summit
#

I suspect they produce an antibacterial/antifungal chemical

graceful marsh
#

very interesting yes

torpid rapids
#

I was thinking about this a few weeks ago, maybe it has to do with the digestive enzymes used to break down their cellular structure in holometabolism (had to look up the term) when they pupate, since they do have a faint acidic scent.

Once they're nearing eclosure, the pupa scent is nowhere near as strong as earlier on, which lends some credence to that hypothesis.

#

That would still also give the pupa antibacterial/antifungal properties like acetic acid.

#

no, there are no common species here in germany

#

its sad, i can read in older books that they where "By no means rare"

#

Calosoma sycophanta

#

now listed as "extremely rare" i believe

fresh valve
#

Also I've always noticed that wolf spiders have a distinct smell

green moss
#

anyone who has access to dynastids

#

smell them!! they smell strong.

#

cetoniids smell even stronger but in a different way

green moss
dusty vector
green moss
#

if you come across any large Megasoma species their scent has an uncanny resemblance to male body odor.

#

especially their excrement. i did not learn this by my own will, i got pissed on once

#

no, not just once actually, several times

green moss
#

like fresh out the pupa oh my god

#

what even is that chemically?? can someone make that a candle or something

#

name it something like "Summer Imago" or smth

#

oh wait wtf ofc hatchet was the one who started this discussion

#

well since the thread started on dynastids and i love keeping them i guess i can go on

#

plenty of people who go out to collect Trypoxylus dichotomus on the regular will say it has a unique smell that permeates the woods

#

like you go to the woods and you just

#

#

you know theyre there

#

its a nostalgic scent if you grew up in their native range

#

i havent seen this info written down anywhere other than in translations of animal crossing lol (iirc)

green moss
#

speaking of sniffing beetles, my most intense smell was definitely when i picked up a carabid that sprayed acid all over my hand

#

i thought to myself "omg! it did the acid thing! i have to know what its like to be deterred by a carabid!"

#

my nose stung. the scent traveled further down my nostrils than anything ive ever inhaled other than wasabi maybe

#

it smelled like an extremely concentrated version of vinegar

#

needless to say if you were a predator, you would drop the beetle. which is exactly what happened to me

#

i was pleased to experience just how powerful this insect is

green moss
# dense spindle *Periplaneta americana* reek

absolutely bone chilling stench. anyone who recognizes it will notice it every time they go to an unsanitary space. if i had to describe it, i would say it smells damp, moldy, earthy, and musky. their droppings alone carry the scent. i assume this is what attracts fellow cockroaches to a prime breeding location

#

(somewhat obvious) word of advice, dont eat anywhere that smells like this. just dont.

green moss
rocky wraith
green moss
#

all this talking got me curious and i smelled my Eudicella gralli

#

the scent is incomprehensible. idk how to describe properly

#

the females smell very different from the males

#

the female scent is extremely subtle, barely noticeable

#

not too bad actually

#

yet again, i have no words to describe it

#

however i feel very motivated to find a way to not only describe it but also document it in a consistent way

rocky wraith
#

You are real as fuck for this

#

I’m always talking about the way bugs smell and people I know just do not get it

green moss
#

smells like like if you only smelled mint in your past life

green moss
rocky wraith
#

It’s so rare because mint oil is really applicable for anything

#

I found it in a diy lip balm kit once as a kid and never again

green moss
#

whats the artifical smell listed as if youre able to remember

rocky wraith
#

No clue

#

I could describe it though as a very faint, no menthol type of plant mint smell, absolutely submerged in food coloring scent

green moss
rocky wraith
#

Ohh so like a menthol smell?

green moss
#

yes its vaguely like menthol

rocky wraith
#

I would, immediately want to know how they react to mint

#

Probably unnecessary but I bet nobody’s ever tested that before

green moss
#

the closest word i can use to describe the male smell would be. waxy? chemical-ish? for some reason it invoked some memories of apartment basements and elevators

rocky wraith
#

New car smell? Not the freshener scent

#

Elevators absolutely do have a smell

green moss
green moss
rocky wraith

green moss

#

How does that invoke elevators???

green moss
#

not bad breath necessarily

green moss
rocky wraith
#

LOL

green moss
#

i get it now!!

#

it smells like teeth

#

if you ever kept your teeth in a box after theyve fallen out, thats what the males smell like

rocky wraith
#

Are you and I on the same page on what teeth smell like?

#

Like morning breath that’s been kept in a jar to go stale?

green moss

Hey y'all, wanna smell cyanide from an insect, go ahead and smell the Pink Dragon Millipede! They secrete cyanide! Don't touch them though!

#

Aparently they smell like almonds tho

#

Also don't worry about touching it too much, they don't secrete enough to kill from skin absorption. 100% don't eat them though.

green moss
#

rainbow stag. smelly. like wine. why??

#

ive kept them before, but this scent is new to me

#

makes for a very luxurious vibe however, which is fitting considering it was one of the absolute most expensive beetles in the early days of modern east asian beetlekeeping

#

supposedly costing over 100,000 yen at the time

#

its quite interesting to see where theyve gone today, into the hands of many beginners just starting out on the hobby, and for relatively cheap at that

#

but im going offtopic why tf do they smell like wine. i think in my case its the adult urine mixing with the maple(?) wood chips (not fs)

#

people here sometimes use aromatic woodchips instead of sphagnum moss for moisture retention in enclosures

#

its also not impossible for yeast growth, as ive been to bug shops that reek of it, and the smell always comes from the deli cups the beetles are sold in

#

just took another sniff to confirm
that is LITERALLY the scent of wine

#

its not as strong as wine, but it is the wine scent

#

its also to be noted that ive never seen yeast harm the beetles, which makes sense as many beetles come in contact with yeasts in the form of yeast-infested rotting fruit in the wild

#

ugh now i want wine

torpid rapids
#

It's always wine o clock somewhere

#

phasmid frass smells good if it previously ate guava

#

it smells okay if it had mango

#

it smells unpleasant if it ate camphor

#

actually i kinda sorta really want to make tea out of the frass

#

i know its possible

#

someone was even serving it at this mini expo back in 2019 where i live

#

the tea kind of tingles in your throat. i know this isnt a smell but this thread is the closest thing

#

it should be noted that the tea was sourced from Phaenopharos khaoyaiensis fed on guava

#

idk if species really matters here lol but surely the plant does

#

the tea didnt smell like guava btw

#

well, youd maybe get a little hint of it

#

but it wasnt the dominant smell

#

honestly its hard to remember the smell

#

maybe its time to recreate the recipe.

#

you just roast the frass then make tea with it i think

green moss
#

mango frass has this neutral and distinctly not so mango smell to it

#

just like the leaves

#

the camphor stuff is just awful. the scent is strong and can spread

#

ive been meaning to collect fresh frass and make tea with it for too long now

#

the thoughts been in my mind for as long as ive kept phasmids

#

the tea smells like it contained spices if that makes sense

#

a lot like the frass itself

#

it doesnt smell herbal

#

actually im curious as to what bramble frass smells like now

#

surely it smells different

#

this is very important research i tell you

Caterpillar poop is just processed leaves, you might wanna choose a species that eats some nice pleasantly fragrant, non toxic leaves

graceful marsh
#

Prunus laurocerasus yes

rocky wraith
#

I don’t think this is very good reasoning because caterpillars use bacteria inside of them in order to digest the leaf

green moss
#

yeah

#

the poop is like roasted/pasteurized before packaging

rocky wraith
#

Yea I was going to say

#

I was hoping they would do that

green moss
#

the bacteria is also why it took a good while for the product to get approved
they had to be sure the poop was clean of all leftover germs

#

i will do the same~~, albeit extremely crudely and at the risk of my own health~~

rocky wraith
#

Thank you I was trying to find out if that was what they were doing

#

Saved me from my three tabs trying to google how caterpillar shit tea is made

#

I’ve kept a bunch of different caterpillars before and the ones I know do not have pleasant smelling poop lol

fallow garden
#

I would not make a tea out of caterpillar poop, but I can see why maybe some people would do it

Hard to describe but it's so distinct

Maybe new skin isn't the right word... old skin? Like, the smell after a cast or bandage has been on for a while.

# green moss new smell log. common swallowtail

then begs the question: does the feeder plant affect the smell?
this species can feed on mandarin, orange, and pomelo. probably more than that, even. if i ever begin keeping these, i'll most likely be feeding them on pomelo

#

we'll see if that affects the smell if i ever get there

green moss
#

smell log: ladybug

#

it smelled very mild. i apologize, for i am at a lack of words to describe the scent. i licked the defense fluid as well. it tasted bitter like nintendo switch cartridge but mild

#

there is nothing i can attribute the scent to

sorry guys

thats why i lickrd it. aa compensation :3

worry not, i'll be back with mantises when conditions are more ideal for sniffing

rocky wraith
#

Can we do one of these but for fungi? Or is that not yet widespread enough

#

I found a fungus that smelled like an old house like mothballs. It had a smooth yellow stem and gills idk anything else

dusty vector
rocky wraith
#

Why ?

#

Smelling is a huge part of identifying fungi

#

There aren’t any mushrooms that are poisonous just to smell, if that’s what you’re getting at

#

Even the existence of any that are poisonous to touch is debated and it’s like one european species

#

chat! i smelled sawfly larvae today

#

the larvae had been feeding on camphor

#

so their resulting defensive odor smelled like camphor oil

#

Mesoneura rufonota

#

picture not mine, sourced from online

#

this species is an economically significant pest of the camphor tree

#

camphors are a common ornamental and wild tree where i live, so this species is extremely common

#

however, only recently did i find out that the larvae were that of a hymenopteran, and not of a lepidopteran

#

anyway, theyre very squishy, so today i poked them for fun

#

and i suddenly remembered

#

"hey sniffy, you're on a mission to smell all the smelly bugs"

#

so i sniffed my finger that had been rubbing the small larvae

#

and it smelled exactly like camphor oil, or extract

#

concentrated camphor smell

#

its very pleasant, definitely the best smelling insect i have smelled to this date

#

maybe even the best smelling animal i have smelled so far

They only produce the odour as a defense mechanism, if they're just sitting there they probably won't smell like much. Although I've never tried to get my nose that close to them but I imagine they wouldn't like it if I did

depends
