Enclosure:
- 10+ Gallon tank
- Ventilated lid, must be VERY ventilated, my enclosure's lid has 1/4 dedicated to open and fine mesh for even more ventilation.
- Fill 1/4 of the bottom with dry soil mixed with detritus (50/50 blend, mix in twigs not just leaves)
- Hides (things they can hide under/dig under/hide IN), as well as long/tall things they can climb. Bones work well for aesthetics and functionality
- SPRINGTAILS (or isopods)!!
Humidity:
- 5-10% Humidity, mist ONCE every 1-2 weeks
- mist one side to create a moisture gradient
- Light levels should follow a day/night cycle.
- Room temperature is fine.
Diet & Behaviour:
- Communal, but reclusive towards people.
- Eat raw (natural & spiceless ), meat & protein. Supply an amount significantly more than you think is necessary. Leave it in there until it's cleaned and eaten completely, or taken over by mold. If the later happens remove it.
- They CAN eat pre-killed insects & vegetables, but it is NOT a long-term solution to feeding and will not sufficiently feed them and their larvae.
- Will eat eggs, pork, beef, fish, squash, etc.
- If possible, cultivate blow/flesh flies, as the larvae are beneficial to their diets (Mesh lids provide ventilation and keep any flies and beetles inside)
- They will start to wander around when food is running out, this is why a larger enclosure is better.
- The detritus mixed into the soil is for burrowing ease, it makes the soil looser and optimized for them to dig in.
Molting & Breeding:
- They will breed constantly, but for them to lay eggs there needs to be a sufficient amount of food in the enclosure. Larvae need a constant food supply, and will die without it.
- Larvae will dig into the soil to molt and pupate
- Larvae pupate after 10-30 days.
- Adults will live multiple months, eggs hatch ~5 days after laying
Health Considerations:
- If you spray their enclosure too frequently they WILL die.
- A buildup of mold on old food can be detrimental to their health.
just not too much
