#Ability to make custom bogeys in-game
97 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Building an entire bogey from scratch in-game seems like an extremely over-complicated way to make a train, and an even more difficult thing to code
Rule of thumb: things tend to be much harder than one would assume to code
😢
oh
yeah that's a good idea
lemme just add the ability
how did we not think of that
Truly!
Have you ever done 3D modeling and made those models move using animations?
Oh and texturing too obviously
it's not this easy
Fun fact! Coding isn't just pressing a button, but a task that takes several days to complete even for seemingly simple tasks!
Also this isn't simple, this one is just impossible for them to do.
Close enough to impossible
You'd have to make a massive amount of custom models, an automatic animation generator, hours and hours of bug testing, and it's not really worth all the effort for something only a few people would use. At least, that's how I see it.
Fun fact, coding is just pressing buttons. Lots of them. In sequence. Usually the buttons on your keyboard. Press enough of them in the right order, and you'll be coding!
I was saying that you can't just press a big red button labeled "work" and expect it to be coded, but that you have to do that for hours and hours for everything. I'm not a java programmer, but I do know at least some things like with Lua, and usually anything that may seem simple takes a long time to actually get working
Not even including bugs, optimization, making it easier to understand, and a lot of other things before it can be a usable product
"given enough time, an infinite amount of monkeys pressing random keys will eventually program something to do anything you want" - idk who.
Infinite time and monkeys shouldn't be relied upon to make code.
Yet we see it every day in the thought process of multi billion corporations: "throw money at the problem until it goes away"
“Given enough time, a monkey jumping on a typewriter will write the entire works of Shakespeare” was the quote
You see, they get more money from that code than they spend
SNR is free
There is literally 0 monetary gain for these guys, it's just something done for fun
would pay to have em do two things tho, negl
true
tbh tho i could prolly just do both myself, a lil bit of braindustry-ing for the first part (doesnt matter much since i dont think snr would have too many addons), and the second part could be a pr
Tbf Lua is hilariously limited in what it can do
Time investment for the same results isn't as bad as Lua in many other languages, though still a lot more than you'd think if you've never programmed
yeah i know
still something
i also used to know something in one of the C languages
but its been about a decade
this honestly seems better solved by having drive wheels just as a single block with size variations, you place them as desired and coupling rods connect them like how fences work
animation is just the wheel spin with a rod section with two ends, either end goes invis depending on whats next to it
maybe have a blank spacer for a wider wheelbase
and then the driven wheel is just selected by placing a cylinder block and it being the correct distance from the desired wheel
you would basically just need to animate an 0-2-0 bogie for the actual driven wheel and then reuse the same couple size variations for extra drivers which are very simply animated
this also means not needing to have a bunch of bogie variations and certain valve gears only being on certain bogies
atleast thats how i remember it
this also adds alot more freedom and possiblity not just having evenly spaced driving wheels or cylinders that are snug to the #1 drive wheel but actually have a space, such as yknow the most iconic form of a steam locomotive the "american standard 4-4-0" which i dont think it currently possible to do
3 month necro 💀
english
That is english
You revived a chat that has been dead for 3 months
ergo
A 3 month Necro
"Necropost" being the full term
alrighty and its related to it
otherwise id make a new thread but its uneeded since this already exists and resembles my idea
why is the need felt to just say something obvious like this thread hasnt been active
sorry discord doesnt automaticaly scroll down so i thought iwas the first to respond
Its Tradition
maybe actually use the forum for its purpose
Maybe learn to take a funny my guy
its just kinda annoying like i write an idea and you just are like "uhhh necro post 💀 💀 💀 "
But like
Did you not read the part where mods basically said they arent doing this?
my idea isnt really the original guys idea
its not some editor like the guys describing thats too complex
its just saying solving the issue of customization by having something like the basic create single wheel but more realistic and with a driven wheel part where you have all your valve gear types or whatever
instead of like how EB does with having it consolidated in one fixed bogie
its also kind of more minecrafty to build the wheelbase instead of it being a huge model you just place down and build off
its already been proven just with an unrealistic scotch yoke on the wheel
its inneficient to just model each individual combination like EB does but i know this isnt EB
just seems alot easier to go about it by making 1 or 2 size driven wheel blocks and then just being done for that certain valve gear variation or whatever it might be
coupled drive wheels are just placed around it
which i already explained
drew it out
gap is also meant to indicate the space to add another drive wheel or not
basically this is a simple way to feasably allow for many steam loco drive wheel setup to be customised as long as wheel size variants are made and if wanted different valve gears like EB tries to do
and basically avoiding needing to make a whole new variant to add another drive wheel or shift the cylinders foward
or have a larger wheel gap
you can see sierra #3, a very iconic loco has both an irregular wider spacing in the drive wheels (to allow for the firebox to drop down between the axles) and a 4 wheel bogie usually requiring there to be a larger gap between the cylinders and the drivers (which can be an empty space for a wheel)
there is the issue of needing the cylinders to be further foward or back so the gap isnt jarringly large or so a rear axle can be driven like on many 0-6-0s
but even making variants or something to allow for that is less taxing than making every single combination or a handful even for number of drive wheels, valve gear types, wheels driven, and all of those needing the different wheel sizes AND gauges
which is like how EB is doing
i see it as much easier to just make a standard main drive wheel and coupled drive wheel with their 2 or 3 size variations or possibly cylinder distances
and then switch out the valve gears, then down the line do that in the other two gauges
youll pretty much cover all use cases for traditional locomotives, with maybe 1 or 2 exeptions and maybe an outside frame variation
also the non main "coupled" wheels could work independantly and mate with eachother to create a chassis for british locomotives with non visible inside cylinders
so people dont need to rely on the toylike default create wheel
also when it comes to other bogies that arent steam locomotive drive wheels, customization isnt needed in this regard since there are less combinations, really only variants on the aesthetics of the frames which isnt possible for the user to just make
Charl found the post and started ranting
I think that kind of bogie is in minecraft when u install kuayue
Lmao I can't
