Hey! I was scouring through people who got into medical healthcare companies, was wondering if you could share your experience? Currently doing an internship at large company which pays well but want to make a more meaningful impact @proven helm

I'm currently a new grad software developer working for united health group tech branch called Optum. I joined a program called technology development program which last 1 year where you start in one team for 6 months, then switch to another team for 6 months.
After the 1 year program is over, they place your permanently.
Even tho this is a "program" you have all the responsibilities of a normal developer so it's no intern conferences/activities/paid flights to HQ.
The product I work on specifically is the tail end of finance where we work on the software that sends back the our response for the request for insurance coverage.
It's alot of Java and Java frameworks for my position specifically as well as sql.
You really don't get to see the impact of your work as a software developer, even in a medical company. But I enjoy that at least I know that I'm contributing.

Oh awesome! I actually got into optum but they didn't provide relocation

#

For the internship

#

This actually sounds very similar to my position as an intern. I work a bit on the taking responses from a java framework called kafka

#

Do you mind if we do a call whenever you have time to talk about your experience more? Just want to hear your thoughts elaborated more but if not messaging would do too @proven helm

Messaging is fine, sorry I would not be comfortable with a call from a stranger I met 30 seconds ago

No worries, I was going to call on discord not through a phone or anything more personal than that

  1. How was the interview process like?
  2. Do you feel like at this large company there is a lot of room to grow and be mentored or does it move too slow?
  3. Do you feel like you're learning more about the medical field than you normally would? Or are you basically siloed into dev and not given tangential responsibilities?
  4. Do you feel like being at unitedhealth group allows you to pivot to more healthcare companies / biotech more easily?

That's all I have, thank you again for replying, this was helpful hearing about the program in general

# small cypress 1. How was the interview process like? 2. Do you feel like at this large company...
  1. Was actually not bad at all, the process was self recorded behavioral questions, some people got a OA afterwards, then a live interview with a developer of the company(I had the principal developer of 10+ years with the company)
  2. There is so much room to grow in this company but I'm not sure how much without internal team hopping using the internal application tools. They do offer raises and bonuses at the end of year
  3. I'm learning alot about how insurance on the finance side works lol
  4. I think it would actually be less, since I don't remember signing a noncompete but I wouldn't be surprised if I would have to sign one at some point to not go to direct competitors.

Damn. Point 4 is genuinely surprising lol. Well regardless, thanks again. I appreciate it. If possible it would be dope to send you my resume and you can decide whether or not I’m up to par for a referral, if not then that’s okay too and I appreciate already the information 🙏

# small cypress Damn. Point 4 is genuinely surprising lol. Well regardless, thanks again. I appr...

Feel free to drop your resume, but ngl for this company a huge part of me being able to land the job was my talking skills. Being able to clearly explain what I know, explain in detail the projects I used as well as small little things that person would only know if they did a full stack themselves, as well as named a few testing applications I used that are a must for certain developments but are not considered mainstream

#

Plus I also leveraged my leadership and volunteer experience

small cypress
#

Awesome, I've sent a friend request on discord

#

I do remember the interview process emphasizing those qualities and I honestly prefer that and think it's something I have a better skill at over memorizing leetcode questions so I'm okay with that

@proven helm hi! I know this thread is from a few months ago. I just had my second (maybe final) interview with Optum and am curious how you like working there and your thoughts on the TDP program

proven helm
#

It's great, people I have talked to have had a variety of different experiences depending on what team your working on(but you will get good and bad team mates everywhere)
But I have had a awesome time here so far.
Great support and communication from my manager once I started the job, everyone very open to helping, one month of pure onboarding and even after that your eased into things.

It's two 6 month rotations with seperate teams and then final placement afterwards.
You can choose to stay with your original team for the second rotation if you like them enough

Depending on what state your in, salary ranges from 84k to 104k base with 30k in stocks and 10k sign on, non negotiable.

Thank you so much for responding! I genuinely really want it and think I nailed my interview! I love that you feel supported that’s what I’m seeking; I applied to rotational programs, almost exclusively, for that reason! I’m in CA so hopefully that’s a high salary because it’s so expensive here 😭😭😭

#

@proven helm ^^

104k for California

cobalt wing
#

Stop. You’re kidding. That would be a dream!

proven helm
#

It was a very much a dream when I accepted it, I'm in California

cobalt wing
#

OMG thanks so much for letting me know! I can’t wait to hear back! Do you remember how long it took to get back to you?

proven helm
#

I had two interviews, first one was a self-recorded behavioral, the second one was a Microsoft teams interview with a developer. After that I think it was a week and a half before I got a phone call with an offer

cobalt wing
#

Perfect! I just had my tears interview an hour ago and she said she recommended me but of course, nothing is set in stone. I know I keep thanking you 😂 but there’s so little information about the process and rates so I’m grateful for the insight!

#

proven helm
#

It was very in the dark until I was actually started my first day

#

@cobalt wing also considering they were under headcount for last hiring season for TDP, you probably have a good chance if you actually got to the live interview

cobalt wing
#

Oh wow, I feel like a lot of people haven’t heard about it because it was new to me before I heard about it at a career fair, but that could just be me 😂

I’m crossing my fingers! I’ll let you know if I get in!

proven helm
#

Of course! I sent you a friend request so I can send you a discord I put together with interns and associates for TDP Optum

cobalt wing
#

Awesome; I just accepted your request! Thanks again! 😊
