@hearty stone Hello there - I saw you had returned to Riot Games as an engineer - I got an offer as well and Im excited for it but also hesitant since I have another offer from Databricks -- hoping you could help answer these questions I had

  1. Do you know what the standard Riot new grad comp is? I got an offer but I'm not sure if I'm being lowballed or not. I have a Databricks offer that Im trying to use in negotiations, but if it seems like they're lowballing me compared to other new grads, I'm more incentivized to just take Databricks since they gave me a great offer
  2. How do you like Riot Games?
  3. Do you know how it's like to be on the eng team for Valorant specifically? Is it any better than League, or just different?

# fathom bone <@198280550618759168> Hello there - I saw you had returned to Riot Games as an e...
  1. it's a weird comp structure. i posted it before. it's like 180, but with some weird 3 year cliff bs, but i hear they give rsus now somehow.
  2. riot was awesome. i got to do all kinds of cool stuff because i really high ranked in val (play tested with devs and helped balance chamber, neon, skye before they came out. can't say my team was great. lots of interns returned despite having "better" offers.
  3. i ended up actually getting a return to a eng team in val. idk what you mean by "better" but overall the eng seems good.

i think you should go to databricks though. or you can do what i did, which is intern, knowing you will not return and go somewhere more traditional tech. imo i have no doubt that you will learn significantly more at db. it will 100% be harder and maybe less fun (depending on how much you like solving hard problems)

I was on an infra team (player platform). They build tools for all the games. But my return I wanted to go to Valorant, so my return is to a Valorant team

#

any clue on what working on the tft team is like?

hearty stone
#

you can't. i talked with teams, and i had a really good case for switching to valorant. i was like top 1k player, i participated in playtests in my time at riot to help with competitive integrity, etc

#

waitt lmaoo being a high rank helped get you in there?

#

how did you tell ur manager, did they take it well?

#

ive faced something similar with wanting to switch teams....

it just made a lot of sense. i was very involved in val, and was already committed to helping gameplay design. i think in general, if you're like diamond or less, you're all about the same. but if you're a really high rank in one of their games, i would argue you have slightly more to contribute, as you understand the game at a very high level. keep in mind riot tends to optimize their games for playing at the highest level (that's how they balance).

#

my manager was totally good with it. he thought it was an amazing fit and was very supportive. culture is pretty solid at riot

#

makes sense, nice! one last q, are you working on game dev portion (unreale engine?)

hearty stone
#

i did some ue4 in my internship, and they are asking me to do some of it in the new grad role for telemetry, but i told the HM if i came on, i don't want to be good at UE4 as i'm not interested in game dev
