This is probably not the case for everyone, but I've seen many times in this discord that people basically

  1. get an offer for summer internship
  2. keep recruiting with another company
  3. get another offer from another company for summer internship
  4. ask either company (whichever's more likely to accept) if it is possible to do the internship in the fall instead because of "extenuating circumstances" or "personal reasons"
  5. one of the companies accepts
  6. person ends up doing two internships one in the summer another in the summer

so one person does 2 internships (another person could hve done that summer internship) but also this is bad for the comapny because even if both give full time offers one of them will not get the person
