#Rn prior internships don’t even mean
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Heavily disagree. having at least 1 prior internship puts you on the map, but if it isnt faang+ or recognizable you need to compensate with great projects. I had no internships last cycle and barely got anything(and the market was way better) whereas I now have 2 mid tier internships and essentially the same resume and I’m getting a lot of procs

great input
yeah i heavily disagree
Where’s your procs at? I can’t imagine an actual tech company would care between student A(3 projects and 1 no name startup) vs student B(4 projects) the no name project would essentially be just a project
i should probably clarify i have a project with 25k users but i had it when i had no internships too
mid tier ad tech company, not f500
mid fintech
Welp we would never knowwwww it’s just all speculations
theres a lot of things to consider but you need to stand out in some way and have atleast 1 prior internship/relevant work exp (nobody wants to hire the guy with no exp)
having startup exp is literally the bare minimum now
no joke
my procs were so bad and i thought it would be better bc i had startup internship
i agree
if u dont have any prior internships and ur not at a t20ish school good fucking luck lol, best ur gonna get rn is a local internship late spring paying 15/h if ur lucky
yes but i would consider being open to anything
if ur not doing well
if ur getting processes then its just a matter of passing the interviews
gl
did u get a reputable internship
i havent met anyone thats been able to get interviews at known companies with just a unknown company internship
I'm at a t20 school and im STILL not getting procs
i am living proof
well i didnt make any assumptions about those that do have internships + good school
read what i said
ur just proving my point even more
do u have any input for what i should do at my stage; i'm working one part time internship right now and still trying to recruit for the summer but not getting any procs
i mean
i do have one and its pretty no name
so ur at 2 internships rn?
oh i read that wrong
yh mb
microsoft in december would be my 12th interview
sorry if i came off aggressive
im telling u
nah im just trying to say if u don thave a good school AND no exp ur giga cooked
its easier to focus on 1 aspect of swe, everyones wants to be a swe, but it splits into so many different roles
yes
niche maxx
well the question is how do u get some exp if u have no exp 😭
experience theyre looking for isnt just other internship experience
in what aspect do u mean, i want to focus on high performance engineering and scalable backend systems but I also feel like the majority of my experience rn is in biotech/healthcare infra (worked few unpaid positions at a research lab and one current internship rn working on old VA systems)
its just what you used at 1 internship most likely is what other companies are looking for
im kinda hpc c++ stuff
not backend work tho
for example backend interns most likely will be either java/springboot or c#/asp.net core and then you would need aws and azure services
you can get those and then apply, but most people wont have those unless u have internship experience, because companies uses those and you'd be working on that
but nothing is stopping u from learning that and making projects
most people wont do it
most people just spam the same generic resume to front end back end full stack devops embedded
yes i know spring boot rn due to my internship which uses springboot to make services and things
u think i should learn aws/azure on top of that
AND lie about my grad date
😁
when's a good time to start reapplying
january
cuz i know recruiting picks up again after like the break
when everyones reneging
theres still stuff getting posted tho
honestly idk why people grind leetcode, if u passed dsa class
its enough for interviews
not really
ive passed every single one of my interviews with just dsa class, ive done 50ish leetcode questions, i think if ur completely stuck on leetcode questions u might be cooked
i dont think you'll be able to do that if u passed a dsa class
they must be asking u easies
maybe lol i havent done enough leetcode to know whats easy or not
exactly
They'll teach u the basic data structures and how they work but won't go over any of the lc patterns you'll typically see
i just wish i could focus on building stuff that i like though
what school do yall go to
are u junior or soph
im a senior graduating in dec 2026
university of mississippi
i go to uc irvine
yea no im fucking with u i go to ucla
i dont think id be talking on here if i was at ole miss ngl
wait
does uci also have one intro dsa class and a advanced dsa one?
yea
@visual meteor i just looked at ur resume
i lowkey think its cuz of grad date
dont quote me on that tho
ask for help from ur school
not help literally
most of the people ik with procs have lied abt their grad date
yea
whats wrong with ur grad date
i meant kids in ur class
same grade level
then u can see if its grad date or something else
if its a grad date problem, youd get auto rejected
i can't tell whether i get ats rejected or recruiter rejected sometimes
if its longer than 2 weeks, ur getting ats rejected, all my interviews have been from within 2 weeks, most are 1 week of initial applications
i thought if its longer than 2 weeks its recruiter
ATS would reject u straight away
nahhh if its longer than 2 weeks, no ones looking at ur resume
^
u think theyre just leaving ur resume back into the system after they look at it LOL
how many of them do u think ats filter for specific schools
theyre rejecting u if its not a good fit
none
well idk
idk if my school is target school
then i shoudln't be getting as fucked prob
i mean ucla isnt a t5
but ive gotten a good amount of interviews and OAs(non auto)
but still t20 school
idk i think anything in T50 is good
- Are you applying with 24 hours
- You mentioned u want to do backend, whats your tech stack on ur resume for that
- Whered you intern previously
- Are your projects backend focused
thats probably like it
- yes usually
- the internship i'm currently at is java/spring boot, but i don't think i emphasize it enough in my resume because most of my projects r in typescript/next.js
- small fed contractor nothing crazy, the rest were unpaid research positions
- yea i'd say so
i think its probably the way u word it then, if u want i could take a look
i posted my resume
but idek if recruiters be looking at bullet points like that LOL
i swear its literally just
in this order
- Do i recognize school name -> if yes -> I look at grad date
- Do I recognize company name -> if yes -> I look at title -> I look at skills mentioned in bullet points
yea its ur grad date, id change it to 2027
u still got january
ur still a youngin bro dont sweat it
u got lots of time
also shit still gets posted into may i know a lot of ppl that got stuff LATE
@job any other critiques of my resume
@hybrid pecan
should i just try to laser focus on one area of backend swe
yea that would make it alot easier to get a internship
hm okay
like java/spring boot and then what else cuz im interested in systems engineering and stuff
sorry if it feels like i’m trying to be spoon fed stuff
i do have some experience with containerization and i was trying to use kafka for another project
nahhh ur good,
I would recommend this stack
Java, Springboot, Kafka, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS(EC2, EKS, RDS, S3, Lambda), Postgres
idk why people in this discord be hostile torwards questions LOL ask anything bro i gotchu
bro thanks ur the goat 🙏
yes i was working on something that would fetch data from a healthcare database that my company works with and run NLP simulations on and it would be orchestrated with kafka
well not the exact database i was using test data
if ur interested in pursuing systems engineering i would recommend u start by making an http server in a lower level language just so u understand how it works
thats a good starter project, not really resume material but
its relevant to backend
