#Apple ICT2 (New grad - Austin, TX) vs LinkedIn IC2 (1yoe - Nyc) | Currently 1yr in ng role at Amex
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Linkedin wtf
Apparently even 270k in nyc is equivalent to 180-190k in Austin when adjusted
And Apple is more secure than linkedin
Hypothetically I can accept Apple and just grind for the first 1 year to get promoted to ict3
And stay in Austin
I’m in nyc rn and bro $ goes quick af
@lime flame @dusk granite @reef flume @outer falcon
buddy
first of all linkedin tc is a lot
where is the loc for linkedin
is it bay or nyc @whole pewter
Bro Austin bro? You want to start your years there? Just save in nyc and LinkedIn benefits is fire bro… free food and shit
Nyc
At Apple?
Yea why not
🤨
yeah this is easy linkedin
I’m in nyc rn
whats ur current tc
118
ok
I’m 11months in at amex
so 250 is more than double
and u dont think u would have a comfortable life in nyc at 250k
270 in nyc is 190k in Austin
thats not the point
My priority is saving $
you're comfortable in both places
you would save the same amount of money at 167 in austin and 270 in nyc
actually u would save more in nyc ngl
u dont need a car
food would be free
apple has no free food and u would need a car to commute
💀
Go to Austin let this dude enjoy saving and the desert
If you’re questioning just go to Apple bro
Ok if they both were in nyc and pay would be the same
nvm this dude is ragebaiting us
What would u say
Apple
i dont think apple has anything on linkedin
If it’s the same thing
Bro contradicting each other
Y u say apple over linkedin and y the other guy say LinkedIn over apple
tell me exactly what u would gain from apple over linkedin
or at least what u think u would gain
Name + security
You said tc bro
the apple name is not better than the linkedin name for swe
Apple or linkedin
Nah they’re the same bro what you talking about @outer falcon
linkedin is one of the most sought after companies they barely hire and dont hire new grad
they pay way more and the benefits are insane
the promos are also way better
Dude said if tc is the same and I thought promo at Apple was higher
apple has nothing on linkedin unless u genuinely are passionate about apples mission
Free food is the only benefit ?
dude its 100k pay diff
Also Apple is more stable
Dude won’t worry about layoffs
Also heard LinkedIn culture is decking
Declining
Check blind
But back then I’ll definitely pick LinkedIn over Apple
Not so sure now
Is this an option for you or are u just interested in a hypothetical
Hypothetical I believe^
Hypothetical
Yo Austin the only problem is tc
Why are u making up hypotheticals man whats the point
Not sure why Apple offer peanuts to some people 😭
Just to see whose name is better
To see why u picking linkedin over apple
Because its the better offer
just listen to the ppl here
Are u slow
Yes I'm not going to debate a hypothetical because its an imaginary situation
Ok fairs
That doesnt reflect ur reality
Fairs
WLB will be the same at both
Like one tier above imo
aren't they the same
I dont think so
Linkedin is the same tier as DB, Snow, Airbnb
what the fuck
🤨
Dude you glazing LinkedIn hella hard
Back then I agree
Not anymore bro
Culture now is getting ass
LinkedIn is a mature company now
Apple there’s always room for improvement
Pick Apple bro it’s more stable
Watch you join LinkedIn and worry about its future or some shit
Yeah sure it might have more stability but I dont think Linkedin layoffs are super consistent
Bro think logically the product itself is mature
And Apple is probably more layoff resistant than LinkedIn for sure
And culture is getting ass
Yeah but I wouldnt worry too much about that imo
Check blind
linkedin is still fine
It depends on Austin’s goals
for wlb
If the dude wants to stay long term I’m betting Apple but if for a short while definitely LinkedIn
I’m leaning more towards Apple guys
Yea sure tc is not that good, but in 1yr I can get to ict3
Ict3 (190-210?)
Which is equivalent to the tc I’m offered for LinkedIn in nyc rn (270k)
Yeah its not 996 hellhole at all and employee benefits are top tier. Also I still the engineering bar is higher than apple as well
don't go apple
apple will pigeonhole u and tech stack is outdated
not good for making future career moves
- TC isn't great
just take a little bit of risk
Yeah apple is a retirement home
for significantly higher reward
Lowkey he’s right
Who is right
it's more reward for just a little bit more risk
sure linkedin does layoffs but it's like 200 at a time
i think that was for last layoffs
How old are you bro? You want risk or stability??
we've alrdy endured a shit economy for multiple years
at some point it will get better
Bro just look at blind and see
I should risk it
Y not
I’m alr in nyc
They just tax ts outta u
- everything mad expensive
Bro just follow ur gut
ye i personally dont think linkedin is same tier as bnb, snow, and DB
i would say apple and linkedin are similar
Why df did this dude said airbnb 😭😭
but linkedin provides better work/exp, isn't bad WLB, and is just a little bit more risk
airbnb is insane
How is it insane? Tc?
wlb + remote + engineering bar + TC
That’s similar to Pinterest and Dropbox
U guys dont think Linkedin is the same tier as Bricks or Snow or Airbnb
how would u rank the 4
Is Airbnb way higher tc?
db >= bnb >= snow >> linkedin
i disagree
airbnb has comparably high TC vs companies like Meta/Roblox
idk just look it up
linkedin hiring bar isn't high tho
Tf
isn't it just RNG + solve mediums
I mean they dont hire NG outside of internship conversion
They also barely hire SWE2 anymore as well
This is not a LinkedIn ng role,
It’s a 1yoe role
And range is 230-270 for nyc
they've been releasing 1+ exp roles
idk i don't think linkedin hiring bar is high enough to be with the other 3
Idk lots of companies dont have a high hiring bar
Like Google and Meta is less than DB and Snow
i think db snow and bnb have very high ones
Even the Roblox bar is not very high either
I might jump ship to Airbnb but my company is already comparable just lower tc
Dont think the hiring bar should be taken into account when determining prestige tbh
Regardless bro pick LinkedIn
Yeah
Ooo you should def think about hiring barb
Bar
You don’t want bots or speds ruining the company
I KNEW it lmaoooo
🤔
More like Austin
regardless bro, just perform a COL comparison using the COL index between the 2
and then think about the choices like this
linkedin is better upside with slightly more risk
apple is somewhere you're going to be staying for a long time with exp in 1 area/domain
not conducive for hopping
270 is 180-190 in Austin
He can just hop after a year or 2
Where
Your statement isn’t too valid unless he stays there more than 3-4 years
Isn’t it bad to leave another company again
Rn I’m 11 months in at amex post grad
If I joined another and left again
In 2yr
Ok
Broooo that’s hella
Yea
linkedin is 270k, so it still wins
Dude is tryna save money
^
And could leave after 2 years
I can get to ict3 in 1yr
Tbh I’ll pick apple if the team is comparable
u can get ict3 in 1 yr
Based on op’s values
but in 2 yrs, you could jump somewhere better
I mean I’m open to it
Apple is a strong name bro
and land 300 to 350
the skills you learn at apple aren't that good for hopping
What org/ team
Is&t and some cloud software engineer role
But hm said it’s everything
Except front end ofc
What about LinkedIn?
is&t is ass
I heard
Nahhhh bro pick LinkedIn
The bar for that org is sooo ass
Don’t take it
I just my mind
💀
Ngl yea they asked easy af questions
Broooo this guy 💀💀
🥸
It’s for your good
Not theirs
If you don’t give a fuck just pick apple bro
But I change my mind I’m picking LinkedIn
Damn
Your future matters more
Old tech stack, lower engineering bar, and ass wlb
It’s not worth it bro
The wlb is ass?
Your org is known for ass wlb
This dude has to be ragebaiting
Ok
And your name is Austin
did you cold apply for linkedin?
no
@whole pewter pm
I see, referral ?
rlly?
jesus
Dude are u trolling rn
Apple IS&T
Over Linkedin
????
recruiters dont ask what org u came from
i think he's talking about name prestige only
idk i think bro is just farming for attention
congrats bro u landed apple and linkedin
u made it hf
make whatever decision u wanna make
no bro
These calculations shouldn't be trusted. Look at the compensation after taxes and rent and see where to go from there
uh doesnt these take that into factor
They will often make assumptions about home ownership and mortgages versus rental
US$230k in NYC is around US$150k post-tax. US$167k in Texas is around US$125k post-tax. Make of that what you will
😂
@outer falcon what u taking for ng again? Blox right
U guys glorify nyc too much
U should save as much $ as possible
And the income/work ratio in doing that greatly improves in austin cuz of COL & taxes
And trust nyc was my dream at under grad, I’ve been here for a year now
It’s inconvenient to do most things
But Austin tx kinda a huge downgrade for a young person
I understanding settling and starting a family
But you could not be more disconnected in your tech career which needs networking and a fulfilling environment to grow
Ur just gonna get complacent and end up average at apple
here’s prolly the most accurate COL calculator ive found
Linkedin is def the move here but sounds like u wanna leave nyc
average at apple
true but the rate u save $ is exponential compared to nyc
ok linkedin looks better now bc of the calculator
idk yet
ill make a decision soon
yeah ur taking home 15k more w linkedin
that calculator also assumes ur spending 3.5k rent in nyc, u can prolly get that cost lower
Actually 4k
which company do u think has more prestige
between apple/linkedin
in swe space
prolly linkedin but its marginal
@whole pewter did you get the offer yet? They should tell you if you’re going in for sys infra or gen swe
Well based off the range wouldn’t it be system infra 230-270?
It’s a 1yoe role in NYC
No not really, it’s all about the job title at LinkedIn, i don’t believe there is an infra presence at all in nyc
It says applications
So regular backend right?
Do you have offer for LinkedIn or is this hypothetical?
Verbal yes
Dude sounds like u want Apple + Austin. Why are u asking here if ur not gonna budge at all
good boy
yalls steaks are too juicy man
Don’t make me find you.
Thanks for free dinner. you are rich now
lookie here a poll
13

this is just end of day what you value more lol. the social aspect of nyc is definitely 10x better than anywhere else. there was always shit to do in nyc every weekend. you can go to any of your friends house in a train stop away. its kinda like being in a big ass college in manhattan.
i think if ur in ur early 20s you should be in nyc living life and having fun. you can grind later like late twenties early thirties.
i think ur alr making top 99% percentile of your age bracket
live a little
😂
I chose Apple pal
Like if this was two offers straight from graduating I would pick nyc 10/10 times bc it was my dream
But I alr been here (nyc) for a year
A lil not for me
It’s cool but I’m not opposed to leaving
So i chose to leave
Apple's TC is not even close to what u get at LI tbh
if we are looking based off TC
That’s the difference tho, working for yourself or working for people’s validation.
You pick lol
Fulfillment is subjective and really in the eyes of the beholder. I think it depends on what you’re working on, for sure. Contributing to something like Azkaban as a maintainer or building storage infrastructure that supports over a billion users is super interesting. You keep running into new constraints and solving new problems at that scale. The same goes for the open source systems they created, like Kafka, Pinot, Samza which companies and people use across the industry. But if you are just doing basic API work or something similar you might not feel as fulfilled but then again it goes back to fulfillment being subjective and in the eyes of the beholder
who layed u off and y
how u get layed off so quick as a new grad tho
what company
what company
? @wispy sedge
bro does not wanna name the companby
You made the wrong decision bud
I believe this is the saying:
“You’ve made your bed, now lie in it”
so corny bro 😭
corny af
linkedin not gonna let u hit bud
I wouldnt touch IS&T with a 10 feet pole
Would you rather work optimizing things on a global scale at Linkedin infra or work on some generic internal shitty full-stack app that wouldn't have more than 1000 users at best?
This should be the question you need to ask yourself.
Also, if you reframe your goal from "saving" more $ to "making" more, you'd be better off
It should be linkedin not apple.
wait this guy went to is&t?
why it does it sound like this guy got apple and got rejected from linkedin final round and is now argueing with everyone that apple is better 😭
speaking as a former apple & linkedin eng right
Haven't worked at either but having known people working at both places
Linkedin might not be the greatest but is&t sure is the worst at Apple atleast. But if yoh have made your choice, you must have thought it through👍
do u think apple or linked has more prestige
In my experience, the bullet points showcasing your work ex matter more than just company name
🧢
@whole pewter Just converting 270k to how much it is worth in other states is actually a bad way of determining how much you could actually save.
Let me give you some comparsion which might help you.
270k in NYC vs 170k in Austin
Post taxes: 170k in NYC vs 125k in Austin
Per month: 14.2k in NYC vs 10.42k in Austin
Lets say the rent + other expenses will be 4k at NYC and 1.5k in Austin
Now you will be left with 10.2k NYC vs 9k Austin.
This will be your SAVINGS.
You see that. That is the amount of money you will actually save.
The conversion saying 270k in nyc is just 170k in Austin is deceiving. Coz you dont spend your entire salary, so you cannot just convert the entire salary. You gotta convert only the amount of money you actually spend(coz only spending in different citites is different, not saving)
