#Meta vs snowflake

snowflake wtf
Deadass? Most ppl seem to have voted for meta
what year r u
4th year
and are you prioritizing return offer for ng
Graduating 2026 may
by any chance
Ro yes
sorry I just dont feel good about meta in general. It just seems like a completely diff company from 3-4 years ago. Constant layoffs and one of the worse pip cultures in tech
Meta already asked for ft details including ft start dates/any ft offers/ft visa details so i was under the impression they do ro
I feel like snowflake is safer and offers similar brand prestige
Thats true layoffs seem pretty concerning
I see
wouldn't take a risk on meta or any other company with a degrading culture. Even if you do get RO you have to deal with mandated performance terminations (which arent even performance related to begin with since they have a quota they have to reach for terminations)
Mandated performance terminations? 💀i didnt even know that was a thing
like, the new policy iirc if that there is a quota for them to reach regarding terminations
like, you can be a top performer but if you're still in the bottom 20% of performers, you're gonna get terminated
thats pretty messed up
snowflake is so much aura
ah i see so im guessing its not a regular thing
ok thats a lot less intimidating
i see
also does anyone know if snowflake pushes to winter from fall?
It’s cause everyone is worried a repeat of rescinds is going to happen
Like 2021 iirc
From people I’ve spoken to
Given the currently political climate
some friends told me snow ro is very team dependant
In 2021?
Ah been some time
But that’s what I’ve been hearing
From people
Bro u can’t tell me that
That’s my news source 😭
Jk jk
But I take everything with a grain of salt now
yea thats what i was thinking, i woulda taken snow if it was san mateo/seattle
my team is in toronto so i doubt, snow offers are based on teams instead of location
thanks 🙏 in an ideal world snow pushes my offer to winter
lets see
cad getting cooked
which part is FUD and false. Meta has quota based "performance" terminations
the stat I got was from blind tho that part idk
but it is true that they're doing quota based performance terminations
is there anything we can do to get a good team in team matching?
or is it entirely rng
just did some digging to find the blind post for ur reference
was 15% , so I misspoke on the 20%, thats my bad
idk at the end of the day id just not risk joining meta and getting pipd 6 months
plus there's a clear layoff culture
I cant imagine wlb being good
i believe thats with most big tech including zon/aws as well
heard zon, X are sweatshops
tbf platforms like blind are a little biased since ppl only go there to complain
like u never see anyone compliment a company on blind
love how you disregarded the article of an engineer referencing the mandated layoff quota that managers are trying to meet and how anything short of high expectations is dangerous
just look at the reviews
on blind
of meta
everyone is complaining of pip culture on the reviews
compared to other reviews of other companies where complaints are related to pay, growth, etc etc
are you on zuckerbergs payroll? Little to no big tech companies are below a 3.5. If every poor review is citing pip culture/layoff culture, then clearly it isn't something that's exxagerated.
lmao, why would anyone believe that
makes sense, you're just a biased meta employee
start leetcoding now
What does that have to do with my claim, im bringing up those factors because those factors are the reasons for lower ratings at other companies; not a layoff/pip culture which seems to dominate the culture at meta (ie, if we look at the reviews of other companies with similar stars to meta, those stars are being attributed to things separate from layoff/pip.)
you never looked at the article tho and claimed it was a sensationalized blog without reading it
brb
are you denying that Meta managers are required to identify x % of their teams for the lowest performance ratings, regardless of actual performance, to meet company targets for non-regrettable attrition?
quota figure I said earlier I wasn't confident on. But how is that not a mandated termination system? Meta's internal guidance explicitly instructs managers to place a set percentage of employees into the bottom performance categories to meet layoff targets..... https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-job-cuts-everything-we-know-2025-2
When I'm looking this up this isn't what I get, lmao. Recent internal memos obtained by some media show that employees rated as "Met Some" or "Did Not Meet" are automatically placed on the termination list..... https://www.indiatoday.in/technology/news/story/meta-layoffs-employees-with-these-ratings-will-be-fired-internal-memo-reveals-2665125-2025-01-15](https://www.indiatoday.in/technology/news/story/meta-layoffs-employees-with-these-ratings-will-be-fired-internal-memo-reveals-2665125-2025-01-15)
And from what I understand those rated "Met Most," employability depends on whether the organization has already met its attrition targets; some "Met Most" employees are also terminated to reach a required non regrettable attrition
And from these articles, affected employees and managers are saying that some staff with previously strong performance records were abruptly downgraded and terminated, so what you're saying isn't making sense to me. It is not solely based on individual performance improvement (e.g., BE → CME), it seems to be based on meeting company-mandated quotas....
@scarlet rune considering RO is a big priority, idk if snowflake is the move, RO has been pretty low recently afaik. i'd recommend asking prev interns on the native apps team to see what RO rates were like for the team
- I already retracted the 20% citation and respectfully 2. you're delirious if you think they're not going to repeat this policy despite managers and employees coming out alike saying this seems to be a systematic policy
yea thats what i heard, talked to an intern who worked there abt 2 years ago i think, he told me the native apps team went under a lot of restructuring ever since so im not too sure how things are now
You chastised me for being too speculative about this being a systematic issue, and in the same breath your whole argument hinges on the possibility of meta keeping true to its word about this being a one off situation....which you also say you don't trust? Why don't you trust may I ask?
Could it be the case that you don't trust it because its in fact systematic and meta is lying
The policy is real, why would I trust a single engineer (you) against several engineers who are calling it out?
wdym "seriously" works
💀
are you denying those people work at meta?
so wdym by "seriously works"
im not getting my info from cscd tho..
these are business insider articles and first hand accounts from blind
ik it is
what relation does that have to what im saying. is this suppose to go to your point that all of these ppl are supposedly lying?
What? Snowflake RO is so much lower than Meta
Bro knows nothing and just yapping
what is snowflakes ro rate
did you read the entire convo? We werent even discussing RO rate, it was the implication of working at either company given pip/layoff culture
personally everything I've seen has held up, but I can understand if thats just a unique experience. Didnt mean to mislead with rhe 20% stat, thanks for calling me out on it
Yeah Meta moves fast and they want the best. Whatever non-meta people say, it’s still one of the best companies to work for.
i had the chance to work at both companies here's my two cents:
- meta was really stressful, my team (ML + ads infra) I was working from 9-9 basically (sometimes on weekends when my mentor messaged me)
- snowflake for my fall cohort had better RO rate (around 80%) but for my summer meta cohort it was 30%
- snowflake has better engineers and more focus on correcntess, meta culture of fail fast is actually insane, my mentor at midpoint was telling me to get 5 small PRs out everyday basically
- vibes were immaculate at snowflake. meta was nice for the first week, but gets old quickly since you won't have time to use most of the ammeneties anyway
i see, that makes a lot of sense, what was ur snowflake team
also does anyone know if snowflake pushes fall to winter
is it a big org? and is team matching dependant on ur resume?
team matching is the one thing i am very afraid of, because i have realized res value matters so much
and it can be so rng depending on ur team
yikes
is fall team matching different from summer? since i know theres like 1k summer interns or something
but fall is more catered for loo kids
i see
welp ig i can only pray my resume gets me a decent team
is it multiple choice
"rank ur prefs?"
ic
some of my interests + side projs are pre niche/specific but idk how far they can take me
im actually not that interested in ml/ai 😭
💀 yea id rather not be a part of that
never been a big ml guy
ro team isnt ur intern team?
ah interesting
how long before my start date to find out my intern team (starting date is august 25th 2025)
i see, for intern i wasnt even offered nyc, only options were mpk and seattle
that makes sense ig ill have to wait a bit
better teams? or ppl just prefer the city over mpk?
💀
office must be filled w interns, heard they hired like 1k interns
wtf
5k is ridiculous
i doubt they hired > 100 loo interns (for fall)
oh man...
thats pretty insane
i see
yea that makes sense
i picked mpk over seattle cause the office looked nice on the "day in the life" tiktoks 💀
you should consider
- long term growth
- job security
- team
yea these were the concerns in that order, but i didnt hear great things about snowflake ro which was concerning
oh yeah MPK was crazy. but after the first week to month you stop noticing it cuz you're so busy
fair enough
they've been ramping up on RO
do uno if they push fall -> winter?
which team were you?
native app framework
toronto
ic
i see
thats fair, also on a side note do u recommend stipend or corp housing
oh and dont get started on the public transportation...
is it bad 💀
yikes
i see
thats pretty insane
when i was at MPK, the closest shuttle was a 30 minute walk 💀
was that from corp housing?
😬
One thing to consider is that this year meta stopped team matching new grads and placed them wherever they wanted. (Unless they were return interns returning to the same team). External ng and return interns who requested new teams/location won’t know their team till their first day
You're going to learn a lot more at Snowflake, the Meta glaze here is just unreal.
But if states is a huge preference, can't go wrong w Meta
i see
even the native app framework?
its not a core team
I come back to this server and see a 1v1 for the ages
snowflake is also pretty intense with performance reviews? its ro is rng by team asw right
according to blind snow does quarterly performance reviews
idk how accurate that is but picking for wlb at either company is choosing between 2 mid options
u dont hear as much of the bad bc theres not as many devs compared to bigger companies w pip
That makes sense, i have heard of their quartlery performance reviews
LMAO same
snow RO also cooked
Meta or snowflake
55
79
1
Meta
1271662980055961660
meta
70-30 is a pretty crazy ratio
ye RO to Canada is gg
ig, idk how easy it is to switch teams in snow
afaik it's rlly hard to switch countries at most companies
Just go Meta
@scarlet rune bruh why was there ww3 here
Is RO for snow higher in US
unsure tbh
deleted messages 😮
oh i purge em every so often cause i mentioned personal details like which company / org im in
old thread but i definitely wouldnt rely on snow return offer lol
might be better this year but for my cohort (2024 fall) maybe like 20% got a return offer
yikes
also depends on the team so you could try asking the hm if they think there will be hc for your team/org
Snowflake is the clear winner
That’s bc fall is the worst for RO
