i also don't really believe in "if you keep believing you will make it"
some people will not get far despite insane amount of effort
i remember you going on some rant about
kids who take precalc in college shouldnt be in CS or some shit like that
like are you going to tell them theyre going to make it if they keep believing
If they grind? Yes
Thats the only way anyone achieves anything
Just cuz ur behind doesnt mean u should quit
sure
If ur behind in college
U can go to faang still
Theres ppl who failed hella classes who end up at goog or faang or whatever
i don't believe in the idea that if you keep believing and grinding you will make it
How else will you make it then
because what does it say when someone keep putting in a lot of effort but they don't make it
they will think theyre not cut out for it
Nah they just gotta keep going
because to them the advice "if you keep believing and working towards it you will make it" clearly doesn't apply at the moment
Nah u just keep going
sure
You cant expect instant results
sure
This is a difference in opinion not fact
I think youre a little pessimistic about this
But thats ok
okay so 2 points ig. just my opinion.
- what happens when people buy into the idea that if they put in effort they will "make it" but time after time, they fail and they fail? they will start doubting themselves when efforts don't translate into results as when they buy into shit like "you can do anything you can set your mind to", they will falsely attribute the lack of results to themselves
I think people will have developed enough brains to realize the external factors if it gets that bad
Whether that be a legit intelligence gap or other real external limits
may be
I think its pretty unarguable that this advice perfectly applies to like 95% of people
Nobody really knows what happens when your application goes through. Many qualified ppl probably just get ghosted
But thats just my opinion
Luck is a big factor
Yea yknow what yall
Forget i said anything
💀
luck is mitigated by sending in hella apps
esp over several cycles
Agreed
sure maybe a select % get screwed bc they get extremely unlucky but like mip said it applies to 95% of ppl
Agreed
Just cuz u fail one cycle cuz of rng
You should just give up?
What kind of ngmi ass mindset is that
U keep pounding cycles until luck isnt as much of a factor
the point is that the idea of effort == result leads to people internalizing the lack of result as due to personal flaw
You miss 100% of the shots you dont take
Lack of effort is a flaw
People with brains will understand the external factors such as luck
And that you can mitigate it with trying again
And again
This isnt the lottery
Where the chances are so low youre stupid to keep trying
I get your point
But i heavily disagree
And im just gonna leave it at that cuz this is honestly a waste of time rn
okay
what is your solution to this
dont rely on empty platitude
realize reality is nuanced
outcome depends on many factors
a significant portion of which is effort
a significant portion of which is luck
when youre at the top of most of is just effort and skill
but when youre in the middle and bottom its more towards luck
may be im just being pessimistic and anti platitude
one app is more towards luck fs
but if you think that the overall process is more luck than skill/optimization idk what to tell u
i see bums that got into amazon
i see highly qualified hardworking people who get mid outcomes
that doesn't mean anything recruiting is a diff skill than the actual job
those "bums" might play the game better
i mean zon res screen is rng
maybe those bums applied on 10 diff accounts
for zon 10 bum applications > 1 amazing one
ofc some get lucky
but if you play the game optimally over a long period of time you will almost certainly succeed
okay if you actually applied zon 10 times then props for you actually lol
right
yea my main point is just that luck significantly influences outcome so just realize that reality is nuanced and if you put in a lot of effort and don't get much results then don't think it's because you're not cut out for it and be discouraged
i mean yeah that's true, it's just important to realize that you can almost always do more or change smth up to increase your chances and to keep going
Realizing this is true comes with grinding in the space for a long time
