#Resume for interviews at Google, Meta, Bloomberg, DoorDash, Duolingo, HubSpot, and more

Want to give back to this community that helped me get here ❤️

Hopefully this helps someone. Please don't DM for resume advice, my best advice is this: copy my resume exactly, including how I write bullets.

I followed this advice myself. I didn't come up with this resume format or how to write bullets like these myself, I mimicked it from someone else's resume (who is 100x more cracked than me).

I'm using Jake's Resume: https://www.overleaf.com/latex/templates/jakes-resume/syzfjbzwjncs

Copy paste this in the font section of the LaTeX file for the font I'm using:

\usepackage{lmodern}
\renewcommand*\familydefault{\sfdefault}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}

I also played around with font size for everything to make it perfect, would be a pain to put that here, just experiment it yourself.

wary kestrel
#

this is a great resume, fits so many things in without being overbearing to read through

wary kestrel
# torpid arrow can you elaborate?

i feel like a lot of resumes here have a common issue, being that its not structured in a way that gets people interested at first glance

#

when recruiters have hundreds of resumes to go through, you gotta have a easy to parse resume

#

otherwise ur resumes gonna get trashed

terse garden
#

.

wary kestrel
#

but yeah imo literally just copy the structure of this resume

#

i can tell there was tons of work and research that went into crafting it

#

im gonna save it too lol

torpid arrow
#

I guess the bullets are the classic example of "less is more"

#

I was always too concerned about bare bones bullets but maybe its better

wary kestrel
#

this is absolutely true imo

torpid arrow
#

maybe that was my issue

valid mauve
#

i followed the level 5 strategy of making a bullet point which is

  1. what did i do
  2. how did i do it?
  3. what tools did i use?
  4. what method did i follow
  5. what was the result
torpid arrow
#

unless I’m crazy

#

then idk

valid mauve
#

he has a few level 5s one of them is this one:
Decreased search time 65% by creating an in-memory vector database in Go with quantization and HNSW.

it's just compacted compared to my two liners ig

#

so i guess instead of yapping like this (one of mine):
Implemented a CI/CD pipeline using GitHub Actions and Docker, following containerized workflows and CI/CD practices to ensure consistent, automated deployments, reducing deployment time by 80%.

i can do this:
Reduced deployment time 80% by implementing a CI/CD pipeline with GitHub Actions and Docker using containerized workflows.

torpid arrow
#

I wonder if the font also helps since it’s very clean and cut

valid mauve
#

i'm not too sure actually

torpid arrow

idk it just feels so easy to read for me lol

@thorn heath 2 quick questions

  1. Is there a rzn u didnt include any leadership positions?
  2. Did u tailor resume at all when applying?
thorn heath
thorn heath
# wary kestrel i can tell there was tons of work and research that went into crafting it

estimated ~50 hrs unironically. went through probably 30 revisions to land on this? every line is something i objecitvely feel like i cannot improve in any way. only at that point did i stop and start applying.

youre also very spot on with it being structured in an enticing way. i tell a story about my entire experience on every first line. + very nice and easy to read = recipe for success

everyone forgets that after you clear ats, a real human does look at your resume.

Do you think is it worth bolding keywords? Also, i feel like 1 liners are only enough for me to show what project I did and what tool i used and sometimes not enough for impact. But 1 liners def make it easier to read

If you already have a Jake's resume that fits, I wouldn't bother with changing the font one point. That isn't going to get you a job at Meta. I didn't have a resume like this though, so I decided to copy his format exactly like he suggested.

primal pebble
#

name company is the #1 most important thing on any resume. you can only get away with not having name companies if ur have a t20 university on ur resume

primal pebble
#

oh and i guess one thing is, if you arent applying starting june and mass applying, youre shooting yourself in the foot. i started applying in june, and applied to like 300 bigtech+ jobs between june-sep

primal pebble
#

that might be what held you back

#

most recruitment processes are completely done by december, and a lot of companies stop taking interviews after like october

primal pebble
primal pebble
# night saffron Would it be a good idea to fill the rest with projects

best advice is to make up an experience. essentially, turn a project into an experience. ie, during internship season (last year and not on my resume anymore), one of my "experiences" was a project that was just a full stack web app i made with 2 friends, and i put myself as a "Founding Software Engineer" 🤣 as the position on it, and left it off my background check. i talked in interviews ab it and made it clear it was a startup esque thing that wasnt like official or legit, so i didnt run into any problems.

#

i think a bs experience is much more valuable than a project bc you elevate it by straight up larping but its fine thats just the game

#

also join some research lab

#

free exp

tawdry vault
#

Most people in here don’t seem to regard the company too high but I’d be thrill to work there

primal pebble
#

wym

#

i mean in the senes of passing big tech screens

tawdry vault
#

I heard they were easy, I haven’t done data structures yet but I can pass most leetcode easy problem

primal pebble
#

the actual companies u work at matters a lot, like startup is fine if its like idfk ive been out of this game for too long, perplexitiy ai i guess

#

like if u put perplexitiy on resume ur gonna get past big tech screens

#

but if ur startup isnt rlly known then its not as valuable

#

thats what i mean by the fortune 50 finance company is mainly what got me past big tech screens

tawdry vault
primal pebble
#

bc its kind of a stamp of compentency if you get what i mean, like a fortune 50 finance company hiring someone means that theyre at least 10% competent and worth even interviewing

#

yeah then even if ur resume and projects are good itll be hard on an objective sense to get big tech interviews

#

thats mostly what recruiters r looking for

tawdry vault
#

Yeah if I could get c1 I think I’ve got a good chance at landing an offer post grad

primal pebble
#

oh bruh easily lol

tawdry vault
#

I’m not looking for faang I’m just looking for a chance

primal pebble
#

c1 easily opens faang door

tawdry vault
#

Yeah that’s what I’m hoping for

#

I have a few Google connects that could refer me

#

But I don’t want to waste it

boreal rapids
primal pebble
#

good luck, the interview is piss easy lol. but at least i would compare that to big tech interviews

primal pebble
tawdry vault
#

Google would be best case scenario, I just don’t want to be stuck local, would like to move to big tech areas

primal pebble
#

but if i was graduting this dec or next may i would be applying rn for sure

tawdry vault
night saffron
boreal rapids
#

I definitely applied late cuz I was fucking stupid

primal pebble
tawdry vault
# tawdry vault

@primal pebble do you have any ideas on what I could do to make this better?

primal pebble
#

intern sesaon i had like 30 interviews but they were all mid

tawdry vault
#

Are my projects lacking?

primal pebble
#

my best company interview was the fortune 50 finance

primal pebble
#

💀

night saffron
primal pebble
#

no theyre idiots

primal pebble
# tawdry vault

its not descriptive at all, the skills section is too small so ur not hitting keywords, bullets are very weak and not impactful, having 1 bullet for an exp makes it look like u did nothing, u use words like "my" and "our"

#

this is like a really bad resume

#

oh u didnt say ur resume is like mine just that u have similar proj and exp

#

uh even that i disagree

tawdry vault
#

I just don’t know how to describe it well

primal pebble
#

work on it lol

#

i put like 50 hours into mine and took like 1-2 hours + multiple revisions per single bullet point

tawdry vault
#

I have experience really deep experience with my projects just don’t know how to describe, I’m on nda for some of my exp

#

I also have some quant based projects, however I’m not targeting quant so I don’t know if I should involve them

primal pebble
#

i mean on an objective sense just compare ur resume with this

#

ignoring companies and projects just the bullets only

tawdry vault
#

So more quantified values and key words in bullets, and it should help correct

primal pebble
#

and better storytelling

#

in a way my bullets tell a story

#

of what ive done

night saffron
primal pebble
#

good work copying the concepts too

#

i think a lot of ppl miss that

#

bc job descriptions have a lot of those words in it

#

but theres no way to put it on a resume normally

#

lmao

#

all part of the game its sad asf

#

if u tell me what ur projects r ab i can help spin it into an exp @night saffron

#

linux and asm game r off the table tho

#

yea

#

yo is mmy alt

#

good luck bro

#

recruiting szn will start p soon

#

of course man i hope people benefit from it

night saffron
primal pebble
#

i agree, and smart. yeah 4 full stack apps is kind of brainrot

#

we can very easily spin #1 into an exp

night saffron
#

It was for project based course through my uni, where a prof supervised us

#

Presented it at Shopify

primal pebble
#

deadass could just larp that u had clients for this. if u had people using it then it auto becomes a "job"/exp instead of a project lmao

#

no one will check or anything

#

but its ur choice, it ofc comes w a risk and also need high tier bs skills

#

just be like students in ur school used it or sum 💀 💀

night saffron
#

Could ask some of my friends to use it, which would make that true then

primal pebble
#

for reference the proj i turned into an exp for intern resume was a web app that helped students at our college find campus organizations they would be interested in

this never actually deployed or anything or etc and in interviews i was like its a wip and will deploy at <interview date + 3months> 💀 and no one gave a fuck

#

LOl

night saffron
#

Hmm I see, do you think I should do A/B testing to see putting it as an experience will work or not

#

So like apply to some positions with it as experience and other as not

primal pebble
#

idk

#

i think hoenstly over that join some research lab if u can

#

i only did it for intern cuz i was desperate w 0 exp at all lol

#

wym

night saffron
#

Yea i tried, didn't get into any since upper years got them this summer, gonna try again

primal pebble
#

intern season i applied to ~700 internships lol

#

i feel like at least f50 finance was hopefully bound to happen

#

nah

#

the only referral ive ever got that worked was doordash this year

#

and im not even 100% sure if it was bc of referral or not

#

but ive never had any other referral work ever

#

but i also havent had tht many referrals, maybe like 20-30 over both years

#

and big tech referrals only ever was 2 places including doordash

#

maybe, never got one for finance
