Company: Amazon (AWS)
Title: SDE1
Location: Seattle
Base: $129k
Sign on: ($40k 1st year, $33k 2nd year)
RSU: $115k / 4 years

Company: DoorDash
Title: SDE1
Location: San Francisco
Base: $145k
Sign on: $20k
RSU: $87.5k / 4 years + refreshers

Notes:

  • Team is TBD for both - not sure if this is the case for Amazon, but I was told that I can indicate preference with DoorDash
  • SF > Seattle for me (I have family in the area)
  • Which would be better for growth/promotions?
  • How is the name/resume value for each company in the case I consider moving elsewhere in a couple of years?

I work at Amazon Kuiper, here is my 2 cents, Amazon is generally better for your career if you are starting, bigger projects, better tools (as in, literally you get an AWS account for yourself, to test, research, learn, etc... ), internal transfers are very easy, I work on embedded stuff that run on satellite payloads, but i have worked on crypto, finance, robotics, etc... you will learn a lot for sure, and no one gets in your way (mostly). In the other hand, Amazon breaks people, you could easily be in one awful team, and hate it here, do not hesitate to leave shitty managers, but as I said is easy to switch teams. If your life is in SF, I would check with the recruiter and find a team there. I can't speak of Doordash, tho. To summarize, Amazon (in the right team) has better upside, but higher risk of a toxic environment. Also we went back to the office 5 days a week. If you have specific questions you can dm me. DD could be way better, but i can't speak on that.
