#leadership like system architecture

Oh no lol. More on the lines of product management, and then managerial, vp, svp, etc. Eventually transitioning out of tech, but progressing into a technical people manager type roles?
Most big companies have a management track you can get into once you hit senior eng
Or at least talk to your manager about wanting to move into
That's the plan, but as I said.. not for a couple of years at least
I like coding and plan to become at least a senior dev if I get the chance.. and will switch then
so maybe 5 more years min?
and I mean.. my biggest flaw is that I dont like LC. Will have to just work hard on it 🙂
LOL then honestly i really wonder why youre spending time trying to grind leetcode
better to switch to sth like a business analyst role tbh because it leads into prod. mgmt
the biz analyst at my team used to do data sci stuff. now they also keep up to date w stuff like aws to have better understanding of the tech as a whole
What kind of company are you currently working at
but yeah if you really want to stick it out and get to snr level first its all really up to you!!
just that most folks i talk to who did that aim to move twd principal engr / solution arch
also theres a distinction between “not liking leetcode but able to be somewhat competent at it after some not too insane amount of effort” vs “not liking leetcode and lacking the aptitude to perform well in it unless putting in some insane level of effort”
2 types of engr:
-
- finished their allocated work quickly. uses additional time to explore the codebase, deep dive into technicalities of things like rendering behavior, comes up w poc like test frameworks or ui library or what have u not to improve team productivity
-
- only learns something new within allocated tasks. either is too slow to have more time to explore new things / complains about not having enough to do but does not have self initiative to start / learn sth on their own
This is why I ask what company they’re at because staff and beyond at big tech is a pipe dream
Your best chance of getting beyond L5 is usually to switch to management track
on this note, wld u happen to know anything about prod.mgmt route if i want to aim for big tech as an external hire?
I’ve got no clue how pm works tbh, that shit is a mystery to me
Every pm I talked to is like “ya I was a swe for a bit then I decided to go into pm” lmao
Currently working at Rockwell Automation
TBH.. I recently applied to such a role and am awaiting result of the final round XDXD
@summer wing and @hushed zealot , where do you guys work? and how long have you guys been in the field?
thats great! but tbh then trying for lateral xfer for such roles within ur org may also be “easier” in terms of snagging the role and/or better opportunities?
i am just a pleb who doesnt work in big tech
i dont even live in the US so tbh “good” software engr opportunities here are far and between. most roles even in big tech here are mostly for roles like “trust and safety” “sales”
damn im.. at 4 yoe already it seems. did a lot of internships asides actual full timr work though
but thats why i am on the camp of “no point wasting more time to grind lc” esp if ure like me who is mediocre at lc and already has a diff career endgoal compared to the typical prinicpal engr / solution architect route
also i job hopped a lot to try to compensate for bad decisions made right aft i graduated from undergrad. which sux in terms of building up career equity.
but for my current org i might stay in this place for a while.
was on contract for a front end engr and ui ux designer role, gg to move out to another role as a fte
the tldr is, im someone who cares about the product that i work on, and not just pigeon-hole myself into a role. which is the opposite of what most / all of the engrs in my team are… (wrt pigeon holing). most of em want to go to the route of S.A so they prefer to spend their time w things like making code more performant
at my current role / prev roles usually i just step ip to handle random proj mgmt tasks. like backlog management, ticket refinement, test plans etc. funnily enough all of these other “glue work” is what i excel in, compared to actual technical work :/ which eventually made me just decide to def transition out of swe aft my curr role bc otherwise i will be stuck w “code monkey” work since i am unable to compete enough in terms of technical proficiency LOL
