#Awkward resume with no experience, need advice
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
The only reason my current work is on there is to show I'm employable in a "high" role. I know that it is not relevant but don't have many other big projects to flush the space out
education on the top
technical skills on the bottom
add concepts: things like DSA, web development, agile, whatever in technical skills
also in some of ur bulletpoints u have words like began and what not
just say u did it
also ud have to ask other people but idk if ur tractor supply co experience should be there, while it does show u have actually worked before, its not really revelant to the tech industry
i also have no experience so i just want hiring managers eyes to be looking at my projects
That's fair - I've thought about gearing it towards team management stuff just because I am one of the managers, but idk if it would even help.
i also switched majors and had no internships, so itll be harder for people like us
how long have u been applying for?
Two months for full time roles, have had an interview at Epic but absolutely crashed on the OA
also are u applying for remote or in area
i only recently started applying, but im focusing on in area jobs since theres less competition
Looks who's giving advice now
i think ive gotten enough advice that i can spread it around
also my dad whos a 25 YOE software test engineer said my resume is a "8 or 9 out of 10"
Don't lose hope kid but @spring kayak has said pretty much what I wanted to say, it sucks you didn't get a job even with referrals but hopefully it turns out in your favour
Paying it forward nice
yeah u just gotta keep shootin until something works out
Your dad survived 25 years in the software business that's a champ
A giga Chad right there
yeah he got laid off but hes in the interviewing process rn, during unemployment he sent like 3 applications every 2 weeks (that was the minimum req for the job help stuff he got) and is doing 2 interviews rn
hoping i can get that sorta luck
except im doing alot more applications
but also hes experienced so he got that goin for him
Pretty much both, local companies are cool and we have some good stuff out here but have been denied from them also. One of them was the referral
if u dont mind me asking where do u live
cuz apperently california is hard af to get a job rn
compared to other states
I mean he's the person with experience they're looking for, hoping he doesn't fall victim to ageism, it's kind of depressing that a father and son are both looking for jobs at the same time
Alabama, kinda in-between Huntsville and Birmingham
Have you asked for some feedback maybe there could be something wrong
oh ok, u may wanna look at in person jobs in other places that give relocation assistance
It's home to silicon Valley if I'm not mistaken so I'm not surprised
yeah it is
california, washington, new york, texas, and virginia have the most tech jobs
Yeah - one of my neighbors owns a massive recruiting company and she's review my resume and said it's practically as best as it can be without experience
You'll have to look for on site jobs and also try ycombinator.com, remove your mind from remote jobs or faang jobs at the moment
Her husband is a SWE and they've both said it's just ass right now. Outside of that I just need to practice leetcode stuff
yeah give up on remote jobs
Can't the husband get you a referral
depends if they are hiring
Sadly
^^
I've asked them but their company wasn't hiring any atm, and they don't do interns
i tried to get one of my best friends dad to give me a referral, he said the company he works for (which is very small) isnt hiring entry level
I've heard if you message a recruiter even if they're not hiring they could consider but then it's still a 1 in 1000
which is true i looked at their website
linkedin is a pain in the ass everyone has their profiles set to not be viewable or messagable
idk if its bc i only have like 3 connections or what
or people just dont want messages
Then again you're not an entry level technically, you have one year of experience
So you're a junior technically
So you could side step with that logic
alot of recruits dont consider internships to really be YOE, like it helps but theres too many times that interns dont do shit
How many connections do you have on your LinkedIn
3 lmao
i barely use it
I'm hoping that Epic decides to hit me up again because I had another one of their recruiters ask me about applying and I told them about my previous application
I swear at this point it's rare people (interns) that get jobs squander it if they fo, screw them
Epic Games?
Epic Systems in Wisconsin
nah the company epic
Oh I was excited for a minute
they spam so many job posts
Kid you might want to get back on it
Don't trust companies like that, they're normally not hiring
I see companies like Noir always hiring
every time i open linkedin i see like 3 more epic posts, its cuz they put a post for every city, then say relocate to madison wisconsin
they have posts with locations set to all the large towns near me
Either they're email harvesting or making it seem like the company is growing
Fake job posts
It sounds like an odd cult, they have meetings like 20 stores underground or something in a room built for every single employee
apperently for those who work at epic its not very enjoyable either, heard while the pay and benefits are solid, they overwork u
Truthfully I'd be OK with it, I can't express how badly I want experience - I really love coding fullstack, especially the API, but holy shit do I hate the OA stuff
well obv no job is paradise
Yeah so apart your LinkedIn so basically the job market these days, you need:
- A solid resume
- A very good LinkedIn profile
- Then luck
yeah the only thing i really need on my linkedin is connections
I mean obviously but some are better than others
yeah
I understand, but don't take nonsense because of experience, you'll find a company (they won't be saints) but they will see your value
Do you have a profile picture, a good background picture also headline and its filled out?
yeah
Alright good, so the thing for a good LinkedIn profile you need at least 500+ connections
Because then they'll assume you're human because you have up to that amount
Believe me I don't understand the logic but that's the game we have to play
For my LinkedIn, I feel you should have 20% alumni or people from your school that also studied what your course, 45% of people in your field, 25% of people should be recruiters (ironically from my experience they'll accept the connection request but not answer your dms 😂), 5% should be people know personally, then the remaining 5 can be people unrelated to your tech field
@spring kayak @hardy saffron once you get up to 500+ connections, your probability increases from 0.5 to 2% but well its the world we live in
.5 to 2% is wild
Yep this career coach made a post yesterday that getting a job while applying online nowadays is 2%
damn
