#New Grad/entry level no experience
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Hello @rancid citrus you might want to put the skills first and then the education last, you should also remove relevant schoolwork, also you can just put one college, the certificates should have it's own sections.
To note: Phrases like “Collaborated with” and “Developed” are monotonous, overused, and add little value to your resume. Strong action verbs, used with engaging language to outline outstanding achievements, are essential to a soundly built resume.
is skills above education good for those automated resume checkers? i just did mine based off of jakes template
but i def agree with the certificate part and the strong action verbs part
@heady cobalt thanks for the help ill update that soon
Yeah a senior dev on LinkedIn looked at mine and told me the same thing, skills should be first
oh ok, also would it be a good idea to put more things in my skills that im like somewhat comfortable with but not super confortable, like i have some experience
for example bash
@heady cobalt
or are the technical skills good enough the way they are
im not going for a FAANG company (i dont have the confidence for that) so idk if i need more
Same here, FAANG will probably be later in my career
What role are you aiming for?
python developer is my main goal, but a general SWE would be cool too
my goal eventually is to be a software test engineer but that role kinda lacks entry positions, also i dont have great testing skills yet
I keep seeing that abbreviation, what's a SWE?
software engineer
Do you mean a QA engineer?
QA tester would be cool too but theres a slight difference between the 2
You're joking right, I thought it was a women in tech stuff 😂
Do tell
nah lmao its literally just the basic title for coding
QA cares more about user satisfaction, that users will like using it
software test engineers are just about making sure functionality is perfect
Well something new to add to my LinkedIn profile
like a software test engineer could be something like what my dad did at leidos, testing failure mode on airport radar
Oh thanks for the explanation
QA testing could be like does this website run well and work and not confusing
But you want to be a software engineer, backend or frontend or just general
backend, frontend would be cool if i learned javascript
Oh makes sense
I won't advise frontend 😭
Because it's tough
is frontend harder than backend?
To get into a job right now
Frontend is what people learn to transition into tech
It's too saturated
If only I knew
yeah ill stick to backend then
yeah if only i knew SWE'ing in general would become over saturated
but then again hella good jobs are like that
And you said python developer is the main goal, have you started learning Django
population is rising as fast as the rate in which people get degrees
I know right 😢
i know flask but not django
django could be a good skill to learn when i grad (i grad in 3 days)
Very true, competition is tough is an understatement
Congratulations, and sorry
Job market is a very scary place, I hope you have referrals
the only referals i could get are from friends at FAANG companies lol
im not as good as they are at all this
Yeah it could be, so since you want to be a backend developer, I suggest catering your skills and LinkedIn profile to backend development, because if your skills are too broad, it's hard to pinpoint what you're good at
Use them and since it's FAANG, you'll have to grind Leetcode
You can also look at startups
yeah i need to build up my linkedin profile, i havent really used it at all yet
Believe me 60% of the people are those kind of jobs, it's pure luck at times so don't beat yourself up
ive done some leetcode prep, im good at some DSA subjects but bad at others
i havent actually started applying yet so i cant beat myself up over it yet lol
im just getting everything set up first
Plus you're graduating with a 3.94
Just focus on your strengths and try as much as possible to cover your bases
also my area has a ton of SWE jobs that dont get insane amounts of applicants since its not remote
thank god im not in cali
To think I was like you a year ago, I started setting it up
Praise the heavens, are you in new York then you'll need a lot of luck
nah maryland
I'll advise for now if possible try and aim for a hybrid job
Remote is too hard if you're an entry level dev
Right now
ill apply for remote hybrid and in person, but i just wanna get my foot into the door even if the job blows (unless the pay is that bad)
def applying for every nearby in person tho
The pay will be bad, it's an entry level job except you're extremely lucky
Do you have a professional headshot?
no but after i get a haircut i can just take a nice picture and use AI to make it professional
AI can to professional backgrounds now
Spice your resume, if you know you're applying for remote jobs, spice up your LinkedIn
oh ok so remote linkedin is more important than for in person?
and yeah my resume def needs work done to it
Your LinkedIn is important if it's a remote job
Because if a recruiter checks your LinkedIn and it doesn't captivate them
They just leave
what can make people get captivated by a linkedin profile
i dont really have anything interesting about me except ive been top ranked in multiple video games
which i dont think applies much to work
I mean if it comes up with the very annoying question of tell me something interesting about you or tell me about yourself
yeah apperently with that question u gotta make it tie into something thatll make u good for the job
so i can just tie it into how putting in the work makes u good at things
as for job apps tho, my plan is to just pump out like 10 apps a day
You can read this
Another issue with mass applying, I hear it's better to message recruiters directly, I've been trying that so prepare for the ghosting and a plethora of rejection letters
Though you're not an international candidate unlike me so
You said it buddy 😢
Nigeria
yeah ive seen alot of vids about how u should do message recruiters
Since you're in the united states, check out advicewitherin
And also Jeff Su
Yes, or should I say LinkedIn influencers
If you've been hunting for jobs, you should have seen them in your feed
so far ive only been casually lookin
i havent applied to a single one yet since none of my stuff is ready
i wanna get everything set up within the next couple days tho
since my github almost done, linkedin gonna take a bit, and resume gotta get fixed
yeah resume the most important part
Get 5-10 job descriptions, then paste them in a word document
Look at all the skills they're looking for
Then use that to remove or add to your skill section in your resume
is it bad to have a couple skills that arent for the specific job but show that i know alot about SWE
i assume i could get rid of matlab thats kinda useless for SWE'ing
and microsoft office everyone knows that
Yep as much as they want you to be a jack of all trades, having too many skills can give off the wrong message
I mean is it necessarily a skill, it would be scary if someone didn't know Microsoft office in this day and age
oh ok ill keep office and get rid of matlab
Remove both
oh nvm ok
education first if ur a newgrad lol
For your projects, remove the fullstack website
i kinda put that project there just to fill up space, should i try replacing it with something else
ig everyone has made a shitty website nowadays
2-3 projects is fine
No need to bloat your resume
isnt it bad to have alot of whitespace though?
mobotaku is handicapping u 💀
Remember these days you have to tailor your resume to the job description
whats ur opinion on my resume then?
How? 💀
I just remembered you're a recent grad, put your education first
idk what he said about bullet points, but i saw he said dont mass apply (wtf lol) and skills first (also weird ur a newgrad they care about college)
do skills go above projects and under education then?
or just keep that as it
is
Yes because mass applying does not really help and could discourage him at first, I was going to say he should apply 4-5 jobs per day
Good ones
they go at the bottom
oh cool @forest lava
they arent really verifiable and you should have them integrated within ur bullet points too
bottom cuz its quick reference and ur resume is only 1 page as an entry dev anyway
uhh
ive seen everywhere say that i should be doin 10 per day or more
more than 10 seems kinda hard af tho
it shouldnt be… just apply to however many u have time for tho. if you apply as they open you probably wont have that many to go through tho
It does, I've read that it's best to reach out to the recruiters or a hiring manager directly
i mean i could do alot of apps and message hiring managers
I mean it's the internet, there will always be conflicting sources of information
itll be alotta work but ig i gotta do what i gotta do
this’ll just get u ghosted most of the time, i’d only do it after applying to all new openings
No harm in doing both
is messaging hiring mangers helping for in person roles, or mainly just remote
since im cool with working in person
Yeah I know, but the mass applying also leads to ghosting and rejections, then again there's not surefire way to get a job nowadays
mass applying increases ur odds by a greater factor
Works either ways, because it worked for me for a remote one so like I said try both
yeah aint job apps just a numbers game
but like a lil extra help from good resumes n stuff
It is unfortunately
yup for entry level n internships
i heard internships are more miserable than entry lvls jobs to get rn
idk if thats true tho
they arent
On LinkedIn, you'll see a lot of sob stories
i dont read linkedin cuz i feel like all the posters have a corporate gun to their head
Quite the opposite, the only issue with internships nowadays is that most of them seem to be unpaid
Very true
oh ok
are all the people in this server sturggling to get internships just unlucky or something
From my experience, it's much harder to get a junior dev job, rather than an internship
Like you said it's a numbers game
oh ok fair enough
Some people are just luckier than others
And some could be a result of their resume
well ive had people say im lucky af so hopefully it works out well
i dont know about this, anything unpaid is more a scam than an internship
But back to the point like @forest lava said, since you're an entry level, your education should be first
But again but cater your resume to the job
most kids here get internships, they just say they struggle because they only consider faang worthwhile
yeah ill fix up my bulletpoints and skills to be more engaging and cater to the jobs im lookin for
oh that makes sense
idk whats with peoples obsession with FAANG, like google employees quit on average within 1.1 years
google sounds miserable
Wow, I'll take it from the assumption that most of them are from the states, but for international candidates it's pretty normal to see unpaid internships
I mean it's like the equivalent of winning an oscar in the dev community I guess
ig true it is a huge flex
I say this as an international candidate
You don't know how many LinkedIn accounts I see that like to put Ex-Google, Ex-Meta
i wouldnt do this for every job but im sure thats obvious. idk how much experience u have, catering resume to a job usually only means applying w one pre-written resume over another, and its only really useful if u have so much good experience it doesnt fit in 1 page . i wouldnt edit my resume every time i apply to a new role
i think everyone that has worked at a big company puts ex-that company
i have legit 0 experience lmao
Yeah especially if the company is global
no internships all i got it uni and one bootcamp
yeah i imagine plenty like to exploit international students
is*
projects count
When I say cater to the job, you know what I said about getting 5-10 job descriptions and knowing how to change your resume
You can put bootcamp as work experience I think
bootcamp is def not work experience lmao
thats like an extra class
I managed to pass mine off as work experience 😂
Then I removed it when I got my first job
maybe ill try that if im struggling
But you can put that on your LinkedIn though
but i think having my only thing in work experience being a bootcamp isnt a good look
tru
well its super late its 4:44 am i gotta go to sleep
thx for all the help
@heady cobalt @forest lava
And they always entice with the offer of retaining after the internship
You're welcome, good luck to you
thx
And congratulations again for graduating
Thanks @forest lava for correcting my mistake, hope you guys have a wonderful day

Alright no problems, celebrate hard
@forest lava seems you're quite knowledgeable could I ask you to look at mine
sure
Alright I'll DM it to you
Clash Royale project seems cool, is it on GitHub?
both are on github.com/justint301
I shall try it
for the scouting bot ull need an api token from https://developer.clashroyale.com/#/
and for the automation bot i havent gotten around to making it work for smaller monitors rn it only works on 1440p monitors itll be a quick fix ill make soon tho
Oh
I don't have a 1440p monitor 😅
i can fix it, i just gotta add a multiplier to scale the values down
Oh ok, lmk when you do
Already have that
aight nice
its easy to add new cards to the thing but with the current preset its some golem deck that u can see the cards to use in the play.py file
havent quite figured out damaging spells yet
eventually i wanna switch it to cv2 then implement ML tho
yo
sup
u still play cr?
have you been able to go through the resources
ive been lackin this season cuz finishing school and hate void but yeah
not yet, im celebrating my bday today so im not really gonna be doin much work
i stopped after a couple seasons ago when it goes so pay to win
bday and graduation in the same week, you are a lucky son of a gun aren't you
it is yeah but some guy i used to push for buys me passes sometimes so its aight
wow haha nice. u ever hit top 1k?
i got over 50 top 1k finishes lmao
my pr is #69 for ladder and #2 for GT, the #2 on a banned acc tho cuz i sold it
yeah ill add u
send link
what's "pr"
ah ok
im low af rn tho im like top 4k havent been playin in a few weeks
"low" "top 4k"
i haven't played at all this season
when im seriously pushing anything below top 200 is low for me
whats ur main deck that u run
miner lavaloon
wow so ur proper good
oh nice i dislike that deck very much
added
nah
void been pissing me off tho people keep voiding my balloons u just cant do anything to stop that
true haha
its getting nerfed next tuesday tho
also evo goblin cage is coming out and its super broken
oh nice
yeah i saw the gameplay
its crazy but just another supercell tatic to get money tbh
released op card then nerf it after everyone buys it to level it up
supercell is stupid when it comes to making money in CR
literally just make the pass have a book of books and add troop skins
yeah true
book of books does nothing for lvl 15 but people will still buy it anyways
and other games show that skins = money
true ig
counter strikes whole economy is bc of skins
well i think skins wont work as well in cr type of game but i get what ur saying
i mean it worked for brawlstars
oh did it
yeah thats why brawlstars is the most earning supercell game rn by a long shot
that CR needs to do is just add lil icons next to the lvl to let players know what card it is so the skin isnt too confusing
like a lightning bolt next to an ewiz
flame next to a wiz
true could work
CR making money off new broken cards is just making people quit
on the bright side tho game has more players than it did during the last duchess meta
true
that season was completely dead
is duchess still good? or is the princess tower back?
princess is best unless u run a deck that actually works well with cannoneer
cannoneer stats wise is best but princess is the most versatile
duchess is only good if u run a spam deck
sure
u play on pc?
i used to play on a touch screen laptop back in 2017
nah im actually rusty
with ur deck i feel like duchess aint the move
true yeah its old
gg
aight ttyl
later
An international canditate bro
best of luck
your struggle will be 10x harder then everyone elses
Yup thats exactly what ive heard
Education First they wanna know if you have a degree or not
if u dont thats immiedete rejection most likely
Yup I'm already going at the anime protagonist difficulty level
time to get carried by plot armor then
Obviously, I hope it's as crazy as Ichigo's plot armor
