ya i had round 1 then round 2
wdym direct to cell
i had phone
then i just had my 1 on 1 with team lead for 1.5 hours
then i think i passed and im going to go on site next
are they flying you out?
how long after interview did it take to learn? I was going to ask my recruiter today but its already friday after 5pm nobody is working
mostl likely wont know till monday
The role im interviewing for is Starlink (Direct to Cell)
I had a recruiter screen, take home coding test, then 45 min with a senior engineer and now they are flying me out for onsite
im also in starlink but im doing SRE
i talked with a guy today team lead did u also?
I had senior interview at end of day yesterday and they sent me email invite to onsite this morning
sucks for me cause i interviewed ended at 4:30 pm on friday
I dont think the engineer i interviewed w was the team lead
i cannot get a response till monday
bro this guy grilled me for 90 minutes
it wasnt typical ng interview stuff all kubernetes , kafka, a lot of questions about linux kernel, and coding
im starlink team though just sre
For the team im interviewing for there are super focused on c so he just grilled me on my c exp and then we whiteboarded some code questions
like debugging a small function he wrote, going through code and saying output of the buffer etc
ill cross my fingers you hear back monday tho
thanks in the interview the guy said my answers were good
should be chilling
ive heard they aren't shy about denying people who got flown out so they prob do a fair amount of onsites
my code was flawless but i made a minor mistake putting {} instead of () because he was rushing me at the end and it passed test case i wrote
yeah def not a big deal
wait what
arent shy about denying 💀
mf if u fly me out u better be like 75% to offer certainty before
why do they even fly u out it should just be 2 rounds then offer
well some companies dont wanna fly you out if they arent sure but thats def not the case for spacex based on what ive heard haha
💀
i gotta grind bro
they going to do hardcore stuff
ive never been in onsite before
ive had onsite panels but never this like superday type thing so def a bit nervewracking lol
same and for me its in an area im like somewhat knowledgeable on but not really an 'expert' like they seem to believe (the whole kubernetes thing)
he said they do on premisis kubernetes so they need a guy that can manage the system
but i can grind it out no biggie i think
well lmk if you hear back monday
sure
did u send a follow up email?
thanking them
idk if i should
i thanked in the interview
I didnt even have the email of the engineer i interviewed w lol I've only emailed back and forth w my recruiter
but in generally prob just depends how personal the interview was, if you really got along with them prob wouldnt hurt but imo if it was just like purely technical not a big deal to send a thank you email
ah damn mines at the sunnyvale office
its some random city near la i cant even remember
prob el segundo if its in LA?
no um let me link the role
hawthorne
i am not from cali i live in georgia
so idk the cities
besides la
i always wanted to live there though
ah nice thats right next to el segundo so i was close lol
yo
what availability did u give
is 3 days okay
How did u guys prepare for the phone interview with an engineer? The recruiter said there is no coding…
Ya because it’s a phone interview lmao
but like how did u guys prepare cuz there should be technical questions
what role
Software engineer starlink flight software
ya dif process
but generally
u are going to get grilled on low level stuff very specific to the role
try and guess what they want from you
for me it was kubernetes knowledge and linux debugging / kernel knowledge
then study that in depth
also mine had a lc med in the interview
Oh did u guess all that based on the job description?
i gave like 3/4 days per week for the next 2 weeks
yeah i would just prepare for the classic questions for a role like that, c questions, threading questions, linux questions etc
i dont wanna go tell way out im so cooked for on site i got a lot to study ðŸ˜
sucks spacex process is obsessed with being fast
they dont want to let u have time to prep
youre never gonna be able to prep for every single question or topic they might ask so part of it is just luck of the draw lol
how much do u think u can get 'wrong' and still get offer
i got lucky on my online interview
idk if i will get lucky again without a lot of prep
also do u think they will ask sys design
my guy had sys design in the codility editor but he only asked me the coding question
for my role theres been no mention of sys design thus far so im not gonna prep it
but if its been mentioned to you prob should take a look at it
mine i assume they going to drill me on linux kernel and debugging, kubernetes implementation, some coding, hmm i have techical deep dive round & programming deep dive round thats the main thing
other 2 rounds are just career deep dive, and culture fit/team match round
they wont ask me the same stuff again though right
so what else would they ask i hope they dont up the difficulty even further
also btw, did they ask u to fill out this 3 impressive things you've done in the form
i dont have anything to say 💀
yeh lol i was caught off guard by that
i lowkey just restated my resume on it lol
im a fresh grad so i have no promotions or anything to speak of lol
i was thinking of saying, fun fact i speed ran my BSc degree in CS in 2 years but idk if that is good or bad
i was going to mention i compiled my own linux distro
but i havent done that yet, im just reading it
yeah talking about any projects or internships you care about is prob best way
i worked alongside a startup founder and helped him build out projects in my intern
idk if that is something impressive
btw @zenith thicket is it important to submit my doc today or can i wait till sunday
because nobody will read it on weekend anyways
you can prob take your time since its a weekend
ah ic thank you guys!
gl to u guys! I will have my phone interview next friday and I hope i didnt bomb it
@vale sparrow
nah not yet
@icy wyvern Just got the email w date, they are sending me booking thing some point today
wtf wheres mine
what day are u going if u dont mind sharing or wanna dm
Lol i submitted friday just give em a day
imagine we go the same day
same
or well i gave it early this morning
btw dood i discovered something
Mine is friday, but im going to sunnyvale office not Hawthorne
How do you design, build and launch a rocket into space in a radically different way from past attempts? That’s the question that faced Elon Musk’s SpaceX, and he recently revealed the process he has embedded into the organisation to make it possible.
Musk’s 5 Step Design Process consists of making the requirements less dumb; delete the part o...
elon musks 5 step engineering design process might have been what they were trying to analyze from those questions
they might do a followup on site and ask u to expalin how u solved and it would be excellent to incorporate this
damn your doing it so soon
thanks, Ill def give it a read
That was the first date I gave them lol, so prob expect them to take the first thing you gave
do they tell you that your their 'leading candidate' and the team 'is really excited to meet you' idk if i should believe or its corporate speak
i gave 14,15,16
i was thinking of only giving 16 💀
I havent been hit with leading candidate but i get the excited in every email so i wouldnt give it too much thought
they called me "subject matter expert" too
im like bro i barely know what im talking about
fake it till you become it
i sure as hell shouldnt be at this stage either lol
you think their bar is low?
I wouldnt say that lol maybe just luck of the draw
it just feels like they are taking anyone who has a surface level idea of the subject and can do basic coding
i studied their whole 'sre' interview in like a few days
idk what onsite will bring though, probably more of the same they dont go into deep kubernetes problems
its always just, how would you set this up, what happens when you run this command, how do you find processor usage in terminal
like basic interview questions id call it maybe level 1 or level 2 knowledge
level 3 or 4 would be actually building out these systems at scale and talking about the challenges which they haven't seem to ask. they dont even ask system design which is unusual for these roles
gotta keep studying though and hope i can just crush this. lower the bar better for me.
yeah im interviewing for a L1 role, but i honestly have had harder interviews with way smaller companies
we'll see how the onsite is tho
for you
what do you think tc package will be?
i see some network guys with 2 yoe get 200k+
thanks, ill def keep ya posted
I honestly dont have a solid guess, but i would guess either a little below 200 or just around 200
soo good out of college
