would really appreciate any feedback I can get on my resume!
tagging folks for a quick glance:
@untold knoll
@grand viper
@steel cove
@pallid flint
Highkey, your bullet points don’t have a wow factor and I feel like they’re too long
Your key words might pass ATS but ince a recruiter sees this
They’re only gonna stare at your resume for 10 seconds trying to find something interesting
Honestly looked at your resume for a minute and your wall of text bullet points made it hard to look at
Short sweet and get to the point with xyz format
wassup Jayyy, i see you got no responses so i'll kill some dead time before plans :3
Skimming (HR):
- you forgot to capitalized 'certified' under your name
- I'll admit that I have zero point of reference on this thought, but I would personally omit the secondary degree unless you're applying to relevant positions that actually combine engineering and data science
- absolutely omit your GPA from your resume. including GPA is reserved for 3.9+ and anything below only serves to provide your reader with an easy opening for scrutiny.
- Your format in Education is CITY_dates but in Experience DATES_city. Change your right-side Experience to match the format of Education.
- the "Technical Skills" title has an indent that mismatches the other titles.
- no relevant courses list???? you are missing out on a LOT of potential keywords. list any courses even remotely relevant to the roles you're applying to. Computer Architecture, Machine Learning Algorithms, Computer Science, etc etc etc
Reading (Interviewer, EM):
- Health Science: nice, I love these!! No notes on wording or content. you should bold "-based" since "Python" is bolded. Bold Gitlab.
- Data Engineer: No notes, this is gorgeous. Change 'csv' to 'CSV'. Capitalize 'parquet'.
- Research: Gorgeous, no notes. Hello from San Diego!
- Baseball: I would specify that it's a classification model, specifically for analyzing the confidence that a team will win. 'baseball win prediction' could be a little more verbose. 67% accuracy is awesome! (send me this github link)
- Cook-Containers: I would unbold 'package', maybe 'Python' since you've bolded it already but I understand the line would look a little naked without it.
- Meme Generator: what a fun project! Bold Javascript. Change 'Javascript' to 'JavaScript'.
- Technical Skills: Something I see people missing a lot is that this section isn't mean to play nice visually, absolutely nobody is going to read this list. As such, it's only here to maximize AI parsing, which I think you could improve on. What you want is to repeat technologies that you've already mentioned in the rest of your resume, but in different forms. For example, you have 'RESTful API' in your resume, but you don't mention 'REST API', which an AI parser could be looking for (and wouldn't find in your resume). Include Rest API to match 'RESTful API', Amazon Web Services to match 'AWS', and expand all the other acroynms you have like SNS, MS, UAT, you get the point.
obligatory, I am just a guy!!! I encourage you to challenge this advice and change only what you think will work best for your resume
best of luck, and lmk if you have any questions!!
It took 24m to write this review! I'm happy to do so, but if you'd like, you can buy me a coffee.
@crisp saddle
I disagree with the 3.9, maybe 3.6-3.7
Not saying youre wrong though, but is there a specific reason for 3.9
The latest data I have on average undergraduate university GPA is 3.11, with a standard deviation of around 0.5. This would place 3.7 at the 88th percentile, not incredibly 'wow!' by my personal standard. Compounded by that nobody reading a resume knows the average undergraduate GPA anyway, 3.9 is universally impressive. I don't think that's true for 3.8, 3.7, or 3.6. I don't see a point in including a number nobody cares about unless it's incredibly impressive. Rojstaczer and Healy (2010)
You can’t really use average for a majors in tech/ engineering
Also its very school dependent
Like a 3.7 at Georgia Tech is not the same as one at ither schools
If I got a 3.7 at a school like UC Berkeley it would be a stupid move to not put it on
At ny university a 3.4 is our CS college’s top 25%
Putting you at the Dean’s List
totally valid! do whatever you think is best for your resume -- i'm sure at the end of the day it's a small detail that is outweighed by the contents (:
But this is just my 2 cents
I won’t lie, I read this as a passive aggressive way, like take my advice or don’t
@crisp saddle You’re gonna get a lot of conflicting answers, get input from as many people in positions you want to be in.
For sure dude! That coffee is the least I can do for you. And also let me ping you the github repo
@prisma imp that's a good point! I should be more direct for sure.
I have rewritten most of the resume in the xyz format, something that might be more sellable. Lemme push that out
@untold knoll @prisma imp really appreciate your feedbacks! I can't thank you enough for your time. And someday day I will try my best to repay the favor to the upcoming juniors
Also, think wormy is right about omitting the gpa. I got similar inputs from some other folks too. Plus j don't think gpa is gonna be a deal breaker tbh
@untold knoll is the goat
It won’t unless your school is Target
I didn’t do much dw
Id say keep it since 3.7 is top 92%
i did not mean it this way!!! i appreciate you disagreeing with with me, i meant it genuinely!
I shall have an updated resume in xyz format for you guys to review soon. Just freaking tired for the day. Honestly the job hunt is excruciating and takes a lot out of you.
It’s all good dude, I knew it wasn’t malicious
You spent that time giving a review so I knew you weren’t a dickhead
I got similar review of not having gpa from another dude at 🍎
I think I'll omit that. Also thinking of moving Education to the bottom
Id recommend against that
If there was one unanimous piece of info from all the big tech recruiters I talked to, it was having education at the top then skills
I would say to get multiple recruiters opinions by going to your schools info sessions or a conpany information session or even join an organization like codepath.org
Hmmm interesting! I have heard from a lot folks they just care about your work ex unless you went to Berkeley or something
Youll meet recruiters that will gove you advice they use to filter resumes
I mean it’s kind of a gradient
Great point! Lemme look up codepath
Its not just T5 then all th other schools don’t matter
A school like purdue might be T20
But ourdue still has a name brand
Purdue
I go to a state uni in San diego, it's not the uc
That’s fair
Honestly there’s an opposing view Ive heard of not having your goa
Someone could think, he’s a 2.9 student
3.7 shows you gave in effort
That's fair too. I think I'll keep it and omit my btech degree
Yeah that might be the best way to go
Are you applying for entry level?
Also Id want to add more in line white space im your experience so ot doesn’t look like a monolith
When a recruiter sees this they won’t want to read multiple paragraphs, which is kind of what your experience section is
Make them short as possible while including xyz format
And also have a purpose for your bullet points, like yeah you made pipelines, but why did the project need those pipelines how or what do they help others in your company with
@steel cove is this better?
I am applying to everything even contract/internships..
uhh kinda
i'm on a bigger screen now so okay ig
hm the fact that you're bolding both impacts and technologies is making this feel a little... messy... thatm ight just be me though
what does ⛽ mean lol
fuel >>> good
oh okay
your projects are weird bc you have technologies in both the header line and the project lines. it's not consistent.
pick a format and stick to it
this looks good tho i like a lot of things here
lots of impacts listed which is pog, technologies listed as well, also good
bullet points don't feel too long or too short
it's mostly visually appealing
sweet! I'll update the projects too and show some impact wherever possible.
@steel cove do you agree with the above comments above resume being too crowded or looking a huge para?
at a glance it doesn't feel too crowded to me, the data engineer experience has a lot of bullet points tho so maybe if you could cut that down...
but you don't want a giant chunk of whitespace either, so if you have nothing else to replace that with, then it's better to keep than not imo
I could put in some more projects but my work ex points should carry more weightage is what I think
that's actually two positions, should break it down into two positions
that should make things somewhat easier.
I just don't want recruiter to get repulsed by huge blocks of words
