#Physics and math major looking to pivot into Software Engineering
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
For extra context, my only experience is at a green tech startup right out of university. I did both research with them and python development. I really hope my 2 years of experience with that job will weigh something. I am not quite ready to apply for jobs but really want to make sure my resume is competative.
@quaint osprey I saw your amazing responses on others and would love your opinion if you ever get time. ❤️
if you remember to ping me tomorrow I’ll give an in depth review
at a glance, wordy, generic Jake’s resume which I’ve been 100x over
@coral nest I'm not sure what timezone you are in but I figured I should ping still since it is tomorrow afternoon for me.
@warm bridge yeah thanks
alright let's see
i have a slight preference for spelling out urls when possible (provided it still fits on one line) bc if a resume gets printed or is loaded on a page and rendered as an image and you can't click stuff then it's not accessible
linkedin / github let you customize ur username so that's why i stick to pretty short ones
for linkedin.com/in/me etc
i'd lowkey remove or at least move it under the relevant universities
one, relevant courses, are for distinctive / upper division courses
because every cs major in the world
will take discrete
data structurea
algorithms
as in, i can infer, "if you have a computer science degree" => "i know you've taken the same 8 courses every cs major will take"
but if you took computer vision
big data
machine learning
that's pretty cool
distinctive courses
not the generic shit
this is good but
why the title
Research Assistant | Python Developer
i'd honestly just put research assistant or something
and bullet points can cover the swe aspect
this is quite nice. i read a lot of projects on resumes and this def did catch my eye the most. very cool
prob my 50th time seeing this. clement mihalescu
eh. decent
Isn’t he not a cs major
would personally remove
So it’s crucial to say this to justify that you can do cs job
discrete math
def don't need to write something like that
Yeah but I’d rather hire a non cs major who knows discreet then not
Like even if it’s basic
He has little credibility alr
I think putting cs50 is def troll tho btw
actually i would say i'm impressed by the projects
i know a lot of CS-adjacent majors that fine swe jobs just fine
Yeah?
math
etc
physics is a bit too adjacent
but math is def fine
it's TypeScript not Typescript
Yeah Software Engineering is a pivot, so I have to hard push anything software I feel
I think the project concepts are cool but the skills are surface level and description is kind of poor
this is like ok. id remove scrum agile and the testing stuff. idk. it's keyword matching but as you say you're cs-adjacent
just my personal opinion
ok lastly, a few points i should list
Like DSA. Visualization . Is just yapping
Also zero point in mentioning portfolio website as a project
Yeah I was just filling white space there
Idk to me I see it as you have nothing else better to show
-
resumes are "what i do" not "who i am" but you do a good job of stripping pronouns etc and other related shit
-
i'm not a fan of soft skills as you can't quantify / reliably say "i am good at leadership i am good at communication"
-
resumes are 50% presentation and 50% content. i think the content and presentation is decent. but this is the jake's resume
Even if it’s that the case you don’t have to reveal that
and if you scroll through this channel
like this resume channel
you will see an abundance of the jake resume lol
like it's quite boring to read cookie cutter and does not stand out v much
even a font change from serif -> sans serif would be a nice change
Yeah I have a different format resume but I was always told to use Jakes, so I made this one as well
largely this is my biggest complain
also
i try to avoid present where possible
because if you apply to work for me
i dont really know when you end / when your anticipated start date would be
Yeah that makes sense
is this an internship did you sign a contract with an agreed last day
etc.
like can you start next month can you start in 6 months etc.
try to avoid present where possible
that's all i got
gl
For the data structure and algorithm one, I am trying to make that one as unique as possible, since I didnt do a course on it and I am CS adjacent (although math kinda covers this).
Its currently like this ....https://algorithm-visualizer.org/
Not the same, but same stuff, one page as such
Also @coral nest Thankyou so much for your review
Is it worth putting it on the resume if it resembles that?
Are the others not like that?
Mine isnt deployed yet unfortunately, but I will def send you a copy when it is.
The links next do it are dummy for the moment
I see
Yeah I think it’s p cool
Maybe not unique tho
I’ve seen this project a lot
Yeah?
I have seen some that are one page search ones
but not many others
I just dont know if it is worth polishing it off if it isnt going to catch someones eye.
I could dump it and make something else, idk
@quaint osprey would still love your take, if there is something you would like to add. ❤️
hiiii ty for double ping, i've been quiet just bc i've been overwhelmed by all the requests and busy, I've received 18 resume requests in the past week
I am going to start accepting only AI/ML resumes so you are on the list :3
Thank you so much Wormy! ❤️
LOL
Bro start charging or smth
Bro wants me to take advantage of people who need resume reviews because they can't get employed 💀
(thats my roommate)
negative resume rizz
I’m gonna have to start selling myself
I'll be the first bidder
YOO
😂
I’m outa here
