#2x faang only 1 interview

I'd remove the course work cause you have some experience. Most people aren't going to know what it really is.
I like to move skills/what not to the bottom usually.
or at the very least shorten the coursework to only the most relevant stuff
^this is good too
I usually leave coursework when they don't have much experience. It's more of a style choice for that one
work experience should always come first b/c experience should exemplify skills
^
those r the 3 parts of my project
can you explain what the project was?
made a metrics dashboard
I'd try to quantifiy this line with numbers instead of words
skills is saying "trust me bro i know this", experience is saying "look i know this i've used it". skills is good at the bottom as a summary of the shit you know how to use imo
What aws the bug? curious more
theres not rly any numbers tho
this is just fluff
well the thing was
twitter didn't rly give me a project
so i worked as a full time employee
did u do ticket work?
ye
so get rid of the agile?
does this explain why i only got 1 interview tho
rejections everywehre else
got some non auto oas and thats it
rippling + samsara
what software did you make your resume in?
I'd consider removing one and expanding on the others
^
it's not outside the realm of possibility that its being parsed badly
projects are fine
tbh that's why I mentioned the top
I think it might not be hitting ur name
oh I was just going over everything
as well
title is for when you've had enough time in your career to distinguish yourself
u are a ugrad kid
u have a lot of good experience as well
are you looking for internship or ng?
internship
twitter freshman
zon sophomore
should i do this instead?
for the top
ngl kinda both
if i get new grad ill grad early
but heard nothing back from ng yet
but haven't applied to too many
o fr
i feel like early career positions are just not available atm
it is definitely an unfortunate market
no phone?
otherwise I will stalk you
how many have you applied to?
lots of postings out there
i applied to like
ot just collect phone numbers
ive been getting a lot of texts recently
from ranndom chinese ppl
I'm like 300 in
and I think I've heard back from
i'm 200 in
20-30%?
sheesh
Usually apply the day of
which notable ones
i apply day of
u should start
most of mine
come from talking to someone
and getting flagged
what do you think are the best ways to network
in person if you can
otherwise I do a lot of cold emailing
wait how do u do it
linkedin cold emailing
i go to a non target t15
is it a good cs program though
and I get shat on for being from canada
our cs program not very notable
what does T15 T25 mean
school rankings
top 25 school
pog
a girl I mentor's bro is there rn
and I have a few friends
great school
but look
school matters a bit
if ur cold applying
yeah i love it here. massive pain in the ass but generally enjoyable
and the opportunities you have
BUT
if u work ur ass off
and you show people you want something
they will respond
yeah my school probably makes up for me not networking as much
point being networking is really valuable
shitty cs school
u just won't get anything handed to you at all
and you need to understand that
u gotta work for it
how do u cold email
which is what I think most cs kids fail to understand
no one responded on linkedin
lemme show u
that's really it
the amount of people i know here at UIUC who are mad they're not getting internships b/c they thought they wouldnt have to work for it is hilarious
its dumb
happens at my schol
and I need to explain to people
they need to put in effort to see effort
I think I've spent hundreds of hours researching, writting emails, studying, etc.
to get a job
and they just send apps and want it
so
¯_(ツ)_/¯
Hey name, my name is ___ and I study computer science and mathematics at university. I have applied to this role. I would appreciate any insight if there's anything i can do to improve my candidacy.
or
Hi Lauren! I recently applied to an internship position at your company and was hoping if you can confirm if you've received my application. I'd love to talk to you to learn more about your company and/or the position.
how bad do u think vandy is in terms of getting flagged for jobs
but having such a hard time now
I think ur fine
do u attach ur resume?
to the message?
yes?
no
...
ive been sending emails too
EMAILS
dont matter the time
send in morning
and schedule at the write time
add ur resume
after you fix it
you have to make them think you're worth it
then u keep trying
or you can give up
it's your call
Hi Nazrin,
Hope you’re doing well!
My name is , and I’m a Computer Science student at University. I understand that there are many applicants to go through, but would it be possible to get an update on my application within the next two weeks? I’m reaching out because I am currently interviewing with Databricks and Samsara for their SWE intern positions. I don’t want to miss out on a potential opportunity with Citi, so would it be possible to begin the possible soon? May I send my resume to you? Thank you so much for your assistance!
Thanks,
name
....
I wouldn't respond to that
any recommendations on how to test this?
"my name is xyz and I'm in cs at xyz. I've worked at some great places like xyz and xyz. I've been really interested in what xyz does and am curious about it. Maybe expand on xyz a bit. If you'd like I'd love to have a call with you; otherwise I've attached my resume below just so you have it on hand. Cheers!"
I usually get more personable
with jokes and what not
like this makes me go
ok
why would htey work for me
kinda feels a bit insulting
cause if u get an offer from the other 2
no offense
you aren't taking citi
period
not sure there's a consistent way to b/c there are so many different ATS systems. when you upload your resume does it autofill pretty well? do you name technologies in your work experience?
wtf are u talking about
why did i even apply
try other ones
workday parses decently too
make the format more consistent maybe then
well just cause it works on some
doesn't mean all
resumes to me
are supposed to be
simple and readable
you want them easy enough
so someone with 0 tech background
can look at it and go
oh wow this is a great resume
not have to search for everything
cause if I need to search for something
my projects and my last work experience usually combine but idk how to fix that tbh
then you've lost me
yeah @summer summit thats a big thing that strikes me about your resume. even with tech knowledge im not totally sure what's going on.
clear to you maybe
but not to other people
ask someone who has no idea
to read it over
and to try and understand it
I'm critical of resumes
the content is good! just might need to be reframed
^
like
i feel like the bullet poitns i can't rly change too much
a bit confusing for people who might be non cs
cause i've been changing them so much
oh you can 100%
and i feel like i've refined them a lot
I have over 300 versions of my resume
for this period
38
?
like my bullet points
like when i write a line of my resume i think "did X for(or in order to) Y achieving Z as a result"
like this is one of my lines:
"Engineered a unified course search platform, consolidating the university’s course API, historic GPA data, and
RateMyProfessors.com ratings to enhance the student course search experience."
I ususally try and tell a story
• Spearheaded end-to-end SaaS tool, saving PMs 6 hours weekly by using AWS Boto3 Python CDK and AWS QuickSight
like how would u reword this?
I do
what is the project in the first and a board overview
and then I go more into details on how I did it
Think about the verb and the adjectives? Like, removing some words, you’re saying you "speerheaded a tool". that kind of wording is harder to mentally parse
you speerhead actions or initiatives
^
you spearheaded the creation of the tool
Spearheaded end-to-end SaaS project
an example of how I used it
I'd stay away from complex words
if you don't know how to use it
sometimes simple is best at the start
and then focus on improving
I mean if you work at twitter and aws
u should be fine for content
and then the auth service
you just have to make us understand
yeah im not sure i love google's format personally. it's different from how people usually talk IRL. I got groceries which made me less hungry, by going to the store. feels stilted
go eat mr. toad
its so late in the recrutiing season tho
get some mushrooms
I got an interview in 6 minutes
that's a bad thought as well
you'll just try ur best and see what happens
not really
yall doom so much on here
it's fucking funny
it's never the end for anything
thats cause im not gettin gnaything
just keep at it
companies are all in different phases with their hiring
and you'll find something
cause behaviours like that
will make companies not what to hire you
it's nice
but not the end of the world
ive heard some people say it's possible there'll be another wave of openings in january because of a new fiscal year and higher budgets
^
I think you're missing the point friend
what we are trying to say is
just focus on doing the best you can
and regardless
everything will be well at the end
you might get a fanng
you might not
it really isn't the end of the world
you have what
25 years to work most likely
maybe more
a lot can change from now to then
1 job isnt going to change you forever
also with the google format, it makes you put technologies at the end. often, the tech is the interesting part of what you did.
Ic
Its different tho
I have expectations
And standards i hold for myself since what i get isnt about me getting a nice fat cushy salary
my thought process is just focusing on being secure in myself and my experience. way less experienced people will get great internships mostly because they're delusional enough to present themselves well
the world isn't obligated to know your worth
you sound delusional
look at the market
and be realistic my dude
I know it's harsh
but having the expectation that you need to make xyz
isn't going to help you in the long run
Hopefully they open ng jobs more than intern 🤞
what's been said is be open and go with the steps and chances you have
Or at least =
I agree
Ur right
you're just going to be sad with what you don't have
if you live a life like that
im kinda just repeating what @gleaming meadow is saying. you are not owed anything. it is possible for you to have worth and simultaneously get absolutely nothing. it's important to be secure mostly because it's motivation to keep moving relentlessly to demand the world recognize your value.
and secure also doesn't mean being like I know my worth
knowing your worth means nothing unless you have an offer
because you do not define your worth in this market
the market does
^^^
and you create it from the market's demand
for you
so yes you might have had great internships before, but what about now while we are in a recession
when there's 100s of you
all stating they have the same worth now
with people above you as well
Yea ik alot student who just graduated without any intern on their resume. Still going for applying🥲. Although idk how the road will be for them ahead.
so make what you will with what we've said
if you want a rating on ur resume
it's around a C- to me
good content but it's a bit all over
and that's fine
@gleaming meadow off-topic but how do you find emails addresses to email
just focus on improving what you can
most are from recruiters I just know
I used to get a lot of reach outs
from most companies
during the hiring peak
I'm a top candiate?
and I run lots of things
and I'm well known to people
which still scares me
how do these people know me
otherwise I work with getting career fairs set up
so I have a list
Youtuber??
I do have a channel
but for something completely different
how do u become top candidate
and not associated to me at all
be nice
be willing to learn
and learn to communicate
yeah but how does that get u out there
no one cares if u can code
ur name
cause people talk about me
and recomend me to recruriters
"xyz sent me your way"
people I've worked with
people I've helped
people I've spoken to randomly
people remember who's kind
that's all my dude
but don't worry about doing that
it's a lot of work tbh
just focus on doing what you can do
to help yourself in the now
@gleaming meadow any advice you can give them 🤞
they ducked up
but focus on getting projects out
work on open source
there are some companies
that direct pipeline from opensoruce projects
I can think of 20 off the top of my head
not sharing those cause I'll get shit from people if I do
cause I don't think they were supponsed to tell me
part of it is understanding for them
they're playing on expert mode
not hard mode
focus on trying to do as much as they can
and break into the industry
don't matter how
and be willing to take anything
they can always keep looking
feel free to ask questions as well
if u want
I don't mind
part of this is a learning process for everyone
