#Applying to SWE 2024 intern positions, Please Review!

I would put skills right after Education
Don't lead skill with HTML, put Python or Java first
Reorganised it
- What is "Master of Applied Computer Science" use the proper terms. Master of Applied Sciences in Computer Science or whatever it is
Wordpress job:
- Focus less on customer satisfaction and talk more about the components that you made with CSS/JS, it's more interesting
- Optimize sprints? That doesn't mean anything... what did you do exactly?? You collanbd to optimize sprints? Sounds vague
- Reducing error rate is cool but again would be nice to know what you did TECHNICALLY... after all you are becoming a software engineer not a tech support or sales person
GSOC:
- this is not a job it's a project, and it's a really high level project. but it's not a job
- idk who ODK X is, there's no context
- be specific about the TECHNICAL challenges of adding all those calendars, could be interesting
- what the heck is "effective branch control"??? that doesn't mean anything to me, may need more context
- another mumbo jumbo "improved development speed through collaboration"... it really needs specific details about what you did and how you unblocked certain processes otherwise it sounds like fluff
Full stack:
- Could expand on what your app did specifically that alleviated "individual efforts"... need TECHNICAL details
- yeah so it's not impressive that you worked with the "head of engineering", who cares? Tell us WHAT you made and what tools/tech you used and what that achieved
Biggest issue is your skimping on TECHNICAL DETAILS
you're a software engineer, tell us what you did from a technical standpoint
You can jump to metrics to soon and it's hard to connect how what you did actually led to those numbers because there are no details at all
"Master of Applied Computer Science" is actually the program title that's why I used it there
Lemme make the requested changes and send them in a bit
Updated Wordpress one @robust lotus
Doing the other ones as well, lemme know what you think
you should say what you did with clickup, how is anyone supposed to know how you streamlined anything?
Converting Figma to CSS does not reduce errors by 24%... there's a gap in logic there and it sounds like mumbo
Yeah I'll look to change that achievement
"Collaborated with cross-functional teams, led sprint reviews for early stakeholder feedback, and utilized ClickUp for time tracking and goal setting, achieving a 17% reduction in project timelines"
Would this be better?
yeah that's better
even better would be to say what changes you made to time tracking and goal setting that led to 17%
I still don't see what difference clickup made
Kinda like project management like Trello
With reminders, dividing the tasks into smaller chunks, visualizing the chunks, etc
Will see if that can be included as well
I really do appreciate your aggressiveness in reviewing the points...working on the others as well
๐๐ผ
The GSOC one @robust lotus
nah bro idk why you're not saying what you did technically
who is keith wood bro and who cares
was there any math involved in integrating these calendars? what was the technical aspect?
or did you just integrate a 3rd party library?
tbh all of these bullet points convey very little meaning
enhanced dev speen by 17% by having convos with your mentor?
I used HTML, CSS and JavaScript to develop the calendar prompts that were then integrated with the third party library
what's a "calendar prompt"?
calendar datepicker
Like when you're filling a form, an input box comes up but this is to select a calendar
OK then just get to the point
here's how I would say
- Expanded support for 12 non-Gregorian calendars by customising and integrating datepicker components using CSS and JavaScript, extending availability to new users from over 70 countries.
something like that
Sure, will get the number of countries from the calendars I added
I'm not too sure how to frame this one
I would basically proactively ask to meet with the mentor when I had an issue understanding the existing codebase
Ur metrics sound so fake
yeah that's not something you put on a resume everyone does this
Having metrics are good but they hurt u when they are obviously fake or not possible to measure
โ 83% customer satisfactionโ how did u get this number
5/6 = 83%
You dont recommend counting it like that?
Right
So I should not include that one?
I know how itโs important to have metrics but I personally can tell some of them are just made-up
And recruiters are not dumb
They will know
This doesnโt benefit u in any way
During interviews, they will also ask u to elaborate on metrics
"Developed diverse components, including multimedia features, customized widgets and personalized UI elements, applying JavaScript and CSS to deliver 6 responsive WordPress websites"
Right, so I should just go with this like this?
That sounds better
Alright, yeah I have been concerned about the metrics part
Most are approximations like the reduction in development time based on the slotted project timeline and how long it actually took while some are exact like the "75% of SonarQube-highlighted issues" part
Also โreduce overall development cycle time by 16%โ how did u get this number. โImproved development speed by 17%โ โ28% faster delivery than individual effortโ โreducing maintenance time by 34%โ โReduced unauthorized access incidienr by โ43%โ JWT only produces this much? Way too low and itโs hard to calculate this. โAchieving a 95% satisfaction rateโ
These are few that are either very difficult to find out or sound made up
The development cycle part was based on the slotted project timeline and how long it actually took
Like it took 10 weeks but was scheduled for 12 weeks
But I get what you mean, I was concerned about the metrics
Which ones would you recommend I keep? @woven matrix
I will come back later tn to read carefully
Gotta do smth rn
Ping me if I donโt respond
Okay sure thing
In approximately how long?
Prob within 5 hrs I will respond
Sure thing
Is including documentation for the new datepicker components including screenshots for future maintenance good to add?
writing documentation is good. it will be a simple bullet points on its own, so maybe you can integrate into the existing one
Like "engineered and documented new datepicker components"
like that
don't mention screenshots it's not achievement that you took screenshots anyone can do it
Right, got it
"Engineered and documented the integration of custom datepicker components using CSS and JavaScript to support 12 non-Gregorian calendars, expanding accessibility to users in over 60 countries."
Like this?
eh just say "Created and documented custom datepicker...."
and fix the country count based on what you know
i just made up 60
Yeah you used 70, but I had to look it up
I add the Islamic calendar and about 50 countries use it...that plus the remaining ones are used by like > 1 countries
ok cool ๐๐ผ
The updated one
-
I removed most of the metrics
-
I added some more technical stuffs (hopefully they're sufficient?)
-
For "Could expand on what your app did specifically that alleviated "individual efforts"... need TECHNICAL details"
It was that we worked in teams rather than trying to solve the issues individually, since it's not quite technical I removed it and focused on the development part
- I decided to go with "Provided near-daily project updates to mentor, preventing bottlenecks and achieving a 17% early project completion
" as a response to how I was able to complete it early...basically it was expected 12 weeks but I completed it in 10 weeks
Lemme know what you think
Been quite a long day for me, guessing same for you...I do appreciate the help once again!
@robust lotus
-
first bullet point has both present and past tense, really awkward, and ending with "applying JS....." is super clunky I would start with that isntead
-
maybe you can remix the github point to some project management-y thing? cuz that's what it sounds like? it's good but coul dbe slightly better
-
remove the mentor bullet point it's meaningless and the metric sounds fake. everyone talks to their mentor it's not a bullet point.
the rest is decent ๐๐ผ
For the present and past tense part, so I used to actively be collaborating and the tasks stuff on ClickUp
But since I traveled, it's now been mostly passively updating the sites
Would you recommend they all be past tense?
you can make it past tense it may sound better tbh
Sure thing, and it can still be August 2021 to current right?
Yeah it's fine
Alright
In the last point, for the metric part, basically it the project was to take 12 weeks and I was able to finish it in 10 weeks
That's where I got the 17% from
It makes sense or I should still remove it?
@robust lotus
OK well why don't you just say that?? what's this mumbo jumbo about calling your mentor. Just get to the point and say "delivered project two weeks ahead of schedule"
Sure I can replace the part about the percentage with it
So it should just be plainly
"Delivered project two weeks ahead of schedule"
Or I should add the action I took?
ya obv say more than just that
"Achieved a two-week early delivery by milestone-setting, breaking down tasks, and establishing deadlines for deliverables"
This works?
I'm trying to make it one line
Honestly it doesn't really work as its own bullet point, maybe you can integrate into another one, but it's not worth mentioning
Hm not sure what to add again tbh
just get rid of it LOL
Yeah I mean as a third bulletin
you gotta think of what else you did in thar project LOOOOOOOL
Hm I'll have to check something
I remember I performed unit, system and user testing
That worth adding?
Yep good to talk about testing
Alright
Conducted thorough testing, covering date selection to calendar navigation, to ensure the reliability of added components
Thoughts?
Date selection - unit testing
Calendar navigation - user testing
Bad... you're not saying if it was unit or integration or end to end or UI testing, and you're not saying what language/tech you wrote the tests in
It was mostly End-to-End Testing where the user interactions with the date time picker was simulated
language/tech/framework?
The steps was basically to
- Add the prompts
- Integrate with their current environment
- Run a JS file to make the new prompts compatible with the surveys
- Build the new project in Android Studio by running "Build Project"
- Get the APK from project
- Now the survey has the prompts then simulate the user interaction with the form
I don't understand what any of this means tbh brother
can you just say in what language you wrote the test suite?
why is it so difficult
Lol these were steps to update it with the new prompts and test it
i asked what language/framework three times
can you answer?
It was more End-to-End Testing where basically I updated the survey with the changes I made and tested out scenarios
so it was MANUAL?
Yeah manual
I did mention it here, I thought you missed it
that didn't make sense
and e2e is not manual
it's automated
usually
anyway yes you can say performed manual testing on such and such scenarios
I was digging into the types of testing and saw E2E can also be manual
ChatGPT also said it can be manual
Which is weird cause I've always associated it to be automatic
But I guess I'll use something like testing entire user journey instead so there's less confusion
It can be manual yes, but most modern e2e tests are auto
so as long as you say "manual end to end testing" it's all good imo
so it doesn't create confusion
Sure thing
"Conducted manual end-to-end testing from date selection to calendar navigation, ensuring usability of new components"
This better?
that's it? you just did date selection and calendar navigation?
doesn't sound like a lot but it's OK it's just a project
take it out of work exp
Nah there's more but trying to keep it as a range so used "from X to Y"
Right
These are the bullet points now...they're now more decent right? @robust lotus
I can move the GSOC afterwards
yeah that's a good improvement ๐๐ผ
Thanks a lot bro ๐
Any time ๐๐ผ๐๐ผ๐๐ผ๐๐ผ
I didn't really look at projects
Just try to follow the same advice as above
Sure thing
๐๐ผ๐๐ผ
Pinging @woven matrix for which metrics you recommend I keep
I'm not sure which metrics you can put on since I don't know what you exactly did
but this version sounds so much better to begin with
