#Underperforming Resume - Why?

I'm a senior (by credit) graduating in December 2023, and have not been able to land a single interview (except one - and that was for a contract position for a one-man project) for the past two years. I can count the number of CA's that I got on one hand, even though I applied to over 150 positions over the past two years. This has only worsened since the market fell.

People that I (unofficially) tutor get internships and full-time offers from Microsoft and Amazon, but I can't even get an interview at a company of any size. I went to my university's career center and was told that I had a strong resume and they didn't know why I'm such a failure.

Could I please get some insight?
Also, is there a channel that has a list of all of the newest job postings? There was a mention of that somewhere someplace. I'm new here.

Have you been applying to NG or internships? You're a junior, not a senior if you're graduating in December.

When did you start applying to intern positions this year?

How well does your resume parse? I’m not the biggest fan of your resume template. Use Jakes resume Latex template

#

Remove your additional experience section and replace it with a projects section

You have good experience. Go with a standard template that you know will be parsed correctly and good for the ATS

#

You already have SWE experience. Idk why you are including non relevant experience (assuming you’re applying for SWE roles)

It’s just taking up space that you could be using for interesting projects

dull quarry
#

Yeah get rid of non-relevant exps and list projects

#

I agree with jacques

I thought graphic design would be a big plus for that

I honestly lost hope. This is essentially a cry for help

If you applied to roles that asked your school grade instead of graduation date and you said “senior” then yes, it would’ve rejected you.

I know some apps do that

#

Ok then its fine

What are the chances some companies might be discriminating based on my name? I was born and raised in the US but my last name is very obviously russian

dull quarry
#

I indicated that Im a US citizen because I have a super Asian name. Not really applicable in your case

#

But yeah highly unlikely

#

If you want, you can indicate

#

Did you apply late?

versed talon
#

I don't think I will, bc apps already ask if you have work authorization and if you'll need sponsorships

Things might’ve went a little better if you applied early

My social skills are honestly lacking and I lack a fuckton of resources when it comes to finding opportunities

#

I only found out about github repos for internships like a month ago

dull quarry
#

I got capital one offer simply because I applied late July

#

This season has been ruthless for late appliers it feels like

When's the best time to apply for NG

You should be following a standard resume template. Look up Jake’s resume (in Latex). All you have to do is change the content. The formatting is done for you. Also you should add a Projects section

dull quarry
#

Yes to the projects session. It helps. Engineers like to talk about your projects outside of professional setting

versed talon
#

Would doing the same thing in Latex fuck with ATS

Interesting

Probably not worth much. It’s a low priority thing to be worrying about

versed talon
#

Thanks for the tips guys. I'll update the resume & have another round of applications sent out

Good luck man

Another thing to consider: try to standardize your job titles as much as possible (e.g. change backend sys dev to “software engineer intern”)

#

This helps for ATS

#

Good luck!

@rigid phoenix @dull quarry So I'm working on the template rn and am wondering if I really need to keep the bullet points to one line. What do you think?
