I'm currently a first-year computer science student at UC Irvine, and I'm in my second semester here. Ever since 10th and 11th grade, I've been really interested in CS, and have made comprehensive plans to learn web development or machine learning, etc. and build said cool projects with them and get internships. However, I've also had a really poor work ethic, and would procrastinate school work so much so that I barely had time for those things. I wanted to get into competitive programming or data science competitions too, and I didn't do that too. Worse yet, I would cheat my way through high school. I basically cheated my way through AP CSA, Data Structures, Discrete Math, and Calculus. I got the credits for these classes by taking exemption exams that I cheated on, and being placed in high level classes right now, but I have no idea what I'm doing. A lot of these projects seem really convoluted to me, and I cannot do something as simple as reverse a linked list or perform depth first search.

I see kids who've actually learned a lot about coding in high school, people who've done really cool side projects, and gone really far with competitive programming, etc. While I sit here not knowing basic data structures and OOP taking higher level classes than many of them, I cannot help but to be consumed in regret. I wish I had the problem solving abilities and the stuff that they've done, and I get so insecure whenever I see Githubs of my friends, and my Github is pretty much blank with maybe one or two tiny projects in the past 3 years. What sucks is that a couple years ago, I had so much ambition to learn so much about CS, and do so much, and I just killed it. I feel like a blank slate, and my sense of achievement is tied to what I've done. I've had to lie on my resume a lot to make up for the fact that I genuinely have done nothing, I don't even have the base knowledge big tech companies are expecting. I cheated on my OAs and did horribly on all but one interview, that was only because barely any technical questions were asked in that one interview.

I want to become a problem solver of their level, and have build really cool projects, stuff that's cool enough to get me into a big tech company. I want to get an internship at a faang company and excel without cheating my CS classes by the end of this year.

I know this is all my fault, and I hate myself for cheating like this and not doing the work. I get stuck in regret cycles and have struggled to take action for the past 2 years. But I just want to move on from it, relearn the fundamentals I missed, build cool projects, leetcode, and get an internship at faang or something similar by the end of this year. This is not a shipost. I just needed to get this out because I'm too ashamed to tell anyone about this. I know I'm a smart guy, and I am good at learning things or developing problem solving skills rapidly, but putting in the work has been really difficult for me.

Any advice on how to go about this?

I know it'll get me a lot of hate, and it's completely my fault, but I just want to move on from those stupid mistakes and laziness.
